    Drunken Fried Rice

Has to be the best Thai I've had in Bloomington, maybe even better than Indy! They also give HIGE portions so it's a great value!

So glad this Bloomington staple is back! Fresh Thai dishes PLUS the best Pho in town. We've loved all the handmade appetizers, the curry, pad see ew, etc. Our favorites though are the Tom Kha soup and the pineapple fried rice. SOOO flavorful and yummy. And do NOT skip dessert - they are all homemade and so unique - the thai cream cake was amazing as was the taro cheesecake. I can't wait to try the cream puffs but they keep selling out! They have tasty boba drinks and smoothies too. Their new location is cute with an outdoor patio. Service is always personable, friendly, and efficient. One of our regular go-tos again!

I finally made it to Blooming Thai after yet another friend told me I absolutely needed to get there. Now I'm kicking myself for not going sooner! What a fantastic experience! The location is downtown, right in the square. Cute place, not big by any means but didn't have to wait for a table at 7:30pm. Crowded but no line. Server was great and even remembered my wife from when he worked at a different Thai place in town. Hmmmm. Maybe remembering her instead of me is something I should think about :). Really couldn't decide between two dishes so ordered one as an appetizer: the Spicy Catfish. Thank goodness my wife wouldn't let me order 'hot' and negotiated medium because it was spicy enough at that level. And amazing. It came with rice and was just the perfect mix of flavors. Too big for an appetizer but I'm known for ordering separate entrees when I can't decide so don't judge. I'm glad I did! For main course, I had the rotisserie chicken fried rice - hot - and it was very good. You could tell the chicken wasn't the normal chicken flavor, the rotisserie added to the dish. To be fair, the spicy catfish heat probably muted the flavor of my main since my taste buds were altered from the appetizer so I'm looking forward to this dish a second time without the mix. Wife had crab fried rice (mild) and liked it as well. Portions were very large for all so for those judging my three entree meal, know we didn't finish everything! I'm not into the Thai iced teas but they had a huge selection and we noticed several people coming in just for those as to-go orders so they must be good. Maybe next time as the banana flavor milktea looked interesting to me. All in all I'll be back - a great experience and a new addition to my 'go to list' in Bloomington!

I was interested in coming here for a while because the exterior of the restaurant is so cute and I see it whenever I'm walking around downtown. The inside is equally as cute and has a very cozy atmosphere. My friends and I all got the 5 dollar cocktails, which were good. We also ordered some summer rolls and pot stickers for appetizers. The pot stickers were well seasoned and the texture was really great as well. The summer rolls were also really good and refreshing and the sauces that came with them were good as well. I ordered the yen ta fo noodle soup and it was great. There were nice big chunks of tripe which absorbed so much of the flavor. The octopus, shrimps, and tofu also had great texture and flavor. The broth was spicy, umami, and salty. The portion size was also really big and I was 100 percent full after eating. The staff was also really nice as well and gave good service. Definitely would come here again.

After the COVID-caused death of Darn Good Soup, I was hesitant to venture into its replacement. It took me more than a year to walk through the doors but I did and was surprised that it was good, perhaps not "Darn Good" as a replacement but definitely good in its own right. Blooming Thai has many more different options than the standard Thai restaurant. I had the pattaya pineapple rice with tofu which was delicious and something I had never tried before. The presentation was impressive and flavors, good. Their spiciness levels are more on the sensitive scale. I got medium spicy but it seemed more mild. If you want spicy, then I recommend Happy Thai (which is also a great Thai restaurant- my favorite in town). The service was also kind and the place was cute. I'd be happy to try Blooming Thai again for another unique dish.

This place has the cutest decor I really enjoyed the red curry and the taro smoothie! I will definitely come back to eat here :) Also, the staff was so kind!

I've had Thai from every place in town, and they're all good but each has their own special staple item that's better than the others - Blooming Thai I actually found two! Their spicy catfish was AMAZING, truly delicious with great heat but also really amazing flavor, and by far the absolute BEST crab Rangoon I've ever had in my life. I will make a special stop here anytime I was Rangoon, it ruined all others for me, so delicious I can't even tell you! Their massaman curry was great, I want to try the egg pad Thai next time, but man do yourself a favor and get that Rangoon!

Had the spring rolls and egg pad Thai. Awesomeness!!!! Everything tasted great authentic and right amount of spice to sweetness ratio.

This place is completely fantastic! We started off with enough food to last for days (it really did!) and are excited to work our way through the menu. My husband had a chicken and pineapple dish served in half a pineapple (see below). We shared what I think was a special called Drunken Fried Rice--as our server explained, this is MUCH spicier than most fried rice on purpose, to help people with hangovers. Although we weren't hung over, we enjoyed it very much. I ate most of it since I'm more into spiciness. I also had Pad Thai with Egg (Pad Thai wrapped in an egg). That might not be the exact name, but that's what you'll see on the menu. It was delicious! The best Pad Thai I've ever had. The décor and vibe put us in a good mood right away. Our server was very attentive and answered our questions nicely--he made us laugh. It's wonderful to have a new favorite place!

We stopped in for a quick snack. The hot and sour soup was amazing. Some of the best I've ever had. And a huge portion for the price!

There's a lot of choices on the menu and many entrees are customizable with your choice of protein and/or sauce. The place is very vegan/vegetarian-friendly; they have a handful of vegan protein options and most sauces are vegan, if you do try to order a non-vegan sauce with a vegan protein, they'll check to make sure that's okay, vegannaise is available for banh mi, and they will also remove the egg from the entrees containing egg AND take off the price of the egg. Their food may not be totally traditional but I really enjoy it. The level of "authenticity" will vary depending on what you order and which sauces you get in the customizable entrees. Their banh mi bread is different from the banh mi bread I'm used to but I actually like it a lot more. It's crustier and more tender than the usual banh mi bread, closer to a French-style baguette. They stack on lots of fresh veggies. The tofu is thinly-sliced and fried for tenderness that gives it a somewhat similar texture to deli meat. You can also get any banh mi combo as a wrap with the same ingredients, and while the wrap is good for a change of pace, I have to say I prefer the banh mi because the bread is so good. Their other entrees are also delicious and come in hefty portions. Their mapo tofu is the best vegetarian mapo tofu I've ever had. I usually get a Thai iced tea when I come here. It's strong and just the right amount of sweet. I appreciate the oat milk option! I recently tried the Thai iced coffee and that was also really good. Lastly, the staff who work here are very friendly! It seems like a small operation but they work efficiently so I've never had to wait too long for my order! The only thing that's left to be desired here is that everything is served in takeaway containers and they only have plastic cutlery (except spoons for some reason), but I don't know what they're dealing with in terms of capacity to use actual dining ware, so I am not letting that affect my rating.

RHS bills itself as 'Vietnamese Fusion' and I have no idea what that might mean, but it was good. Very good. We went on a cold day, so eating on the outside deck wasn't an option. The interior is a basic strip mall location with a decent number of tables and plenty of seating, albeit a bit cramped. It's counter service, so it pays to take a look at the menu in advance and know what you want before you arrive. Paid at the counter, and they came to our table with the food very quickly. I had the 'Be Kind to Each Other' Chicken Pho which came with the usual sides of sprouts, basil, lime and noodles. You could upgrade your noodles if you wanted. I also added an order of cajun fries, which doesn't really seem like a 'Vietnamese Fusion' choice, but I love cajun fries so who was I to question them? The Pho was terrific. Loved it. The fries were very very good, though maybe a bit generous on the cajun. Still very good, and I definitely will return for this meal again. Friend ordered the Spam Banh Mi. Seriously???? Well, he did. And he said it was very good. You actually pay $0.50 extra for spam. Again, not sure what world you pay extra for the Spam but he did it. He selected the Fire Engine Tim sauce, which was to be spicy. When I pressed him for more details on the quality he said it could be spicier even with that sauce, but otherwise it was very good. He said to point out on Yelp that "That Diet Coke was clutch" - he may have been making fun of my questioning :) All in all a very good experience and I'll definitely return. I don't find much good pho in Bloomington, so it's nice to have a place for that. I won't be eating Spam anytime soon. I'm giving 4 stars only because the seating was a bit cramped and it was busy inside. I would go 4.5 if it weren't in a strip mall and pretty 'basic' ambiance. And that canned Diet Coke is clutch!

I showed up about 50 minutes after ordering and my food was hot and ready on arrival. The host who greeted me and brought out my order was very friendly. While I was waiting for him to get my food from the back, another staff member also came by to check that I was being helped. I ordered the fried eggplant stir-fry with tofu and the coconut ice cream. The stir-fry tasted good, but I selected spice level 3 "hot" (and the takeout container had a "3" written on it so I know they got it), yet there was not a hint of spice in the dish, not even a single chili flake. I don't know if they messed up and forgot to add the spice or what, but I was kind of let down. Taking the heat level out of the equation, it would rate it about average for American Thai food. I wasn't really impressed by the dish, but I enjoyed it (spicy is nice but not a must-have for me if there are other flavours). I liked the coconut ice cream dessert. The included banana spring rolls were helpfully packaged in foil separate from the ice cream, so I warmed them up in my oven a little, and they were very good warm. I'm pretty sure that what the menu calls "homemade coconut ice cream" was actually vanilla bean ice cream with shredded coconut on top. Which is still delicious but not what is written on the menu. Based on my single visit, I don't think this is close to the best Thai in Bloomington, but it's alright, and I might come here again because it's closer to home than the other places I like. I might have even given the food 4 stars if it had just been described differently on the menu, but the lack of spice in a dish that was supposed to be made hot plus the "homemade coconut ice cream" not being that left a little bit of a bad impression.

I can't remember her name but she was so detailed in her descriptions, thoughtful with her suggestions, and had the perfect amount of attentiveness. Now on to the fun parts.... Drinks were a hit! We told our server what we like and they recommended a couple options. I again can't remember the exact name of the drink but mine was a gin cocktail. I'll attach some photos for you. As for the food, every bite I took was delicious. Our table shared the fried brussel sprouts and the ginger miso salad. A very lovely way to ease into our meal on a lighter note. They split up the salad onto two plates for us, which was sweet of them. The portion was pretty good for a $12 salad. Very refreshing. Brussel sprouts were absolutely fire. Get them! Along with that, I also ordered the tempura shrimp maki roll. Inside the roll was cucumber and avocado with giant tempura shrimp right on top, drizzled in spicy mayo. The presentation was cool, a slightly deconstructed version of what I would get somewhere else. There wasn't a single bite left on the plate. I would order all three of these dishes again in a heartbeat. Perfect for a date night or special occasion, but also works for just grabbing a bite with friends. We had a reservation at 6:45, and were sat shortly after that time. The place was busy for a Friday night, and was somewhat loud. Our waitress greeted us quickly, and was on top of things throughout the night. I started off with a ginger miso salad, based on recommendations on this page. Personally, I could have went without the $12 salad. I would have paid more like $6 for the amount of actual salad I got. The dressing was good, but nothing extraordinary. I did ask for no cucumbers- I could taste a faint taste of cucumbers on the salad, so think they just took them off after they were already placed. We split some Bao Buns. These were the highlight of the show. The pork on them was thick, the slaw was fresh, and the bao bun itself was fluffy. We split two dishes for dinner- the short rib and the chicken udon noodles. The chicken udon noodles were fantastic- packed full of flavor and tons of toppings in it. The short rib fell a little short of my expectations, but I had high expectations to begin with. We have had the short rib multiple times in the past- and normally it is a hunk of meat, similar to a roast. Now, it is strips of tiny pieces of meat with a bone attached to it. If the owner/general manager is reading this- GO BACK TO THE ROAST STYLE- the strips of meat was too much work to eat. Still packed full of great flavor though. I had the bridge to Anshun for my drink. I had never had Baiju before, but glad I tried it. It was a tangy drink that was also sweet- would say it's a must try. Overall, some changes since our last visit that weren't expected, but overall had a great evening here. Can't wait to return.

The crispiest most flavorful tofu outside and nice and soft inside. Couldn't tell it wasn't chicken! We also had oysters. For dinner I had the Katsu Curry and it was on point! And the leftovers were just as delicious. My sister had the Tantanmen and it was sooo good!! I could drink that broth. They do give you options for rice instead of noodles and broth if you like options. We also shared the Glazed tofu and yall it will change your LIFE!!! Cute monkeys hanging out everywhere with beautiful string lights and a classy understated tiki vibe. Please go here if you haven't yet. You'll thank me later

Strangebird is one of my family's favorite places in Indy. We have special occasions there, go to…read morecelebrate little moments, and go on a bad day when we just need a big bowl of comfort food. The drinks, the ramen, the dessert...we love it all, and we love spending our money at a local business. For years now, the kitchen has substituted rice for ramen for me because I have gluten intolerance. I have always asked respectfully, explained why, and said thank you, every single time. Tonight my husband and I walked down to Strangebird for dinner, ordered drinks and dinner, and I had *just* said to my husband that Strangebird has come to feel like a second home. Then the server came out and told us that the chef has decided they will no longer permit any modifications, including those that meet dietary needs. We were out on the quiet patio surrounded by other customers, so on top of being totally blindsided, it was actually pretty embarrassing, too. Folks, let me tell you how much I wish I could just eat the ramen noodles like everybody else. So much food that I love (and in some cases spent years learning to make myself) went out the window forever when my body stopped being able to handle wheat. But at Strangebird, I could still go in and enjoy the depth of flavor in every other component of a bowl of ramen. And that meant the absolute world to me. I'm heartbroken.
