I know we just moved here, but this might be our go-to choice for Thai food in Bloomington! The restaurant is small, but still maintains a good atmosphere. The night I visited, they were very busy, with a large party in the back part; however, they didn't miss a beat, and service was as good as you would hope. I used their website to order takeout. The site tells you it takes 45-60 minutes to prepare an order. I showed up about 50 minutes after ordering and my food was hot and ready on arrival. The host who greeted me and brought out my order was very friendly. While I was waiting for him to get my food from the back, another staff member also came by to check that I was being helped. I ordered the fried eggplant stir-fry with tofu and the coconut ice cream. The stir-fry tasted good, but I selected spice level 3 "hot" (and the takeout container had a "3" written on it so I know they got it), yet there was not a hint of spice in the dish, not even a single chili flake. I don't know if they messed up and forgot to add the spice or what, but I was kind of let down. Taking the heat level out of the equation, it would rate it about average for American Thai food. I wasn't really impressed by the dish, but I enjoyed it (spicy is nice but not a must-have for me if there are other flavours). I liked the coconut ice cream dessert. The included banana spring rolls were helpfully packaged in foil separate from the ice cream, so I warmed them up in my oven a little, and they were very good warm. I'm pretty sure that what the menu calls "homemade coconut ice cream" was actually vanilla bean ice cream with shredded coconut on top. Which is still delicious but not what is written on the menu. Based on my single visit, I don't think this is close to the best Thai in Bloomington, but it's alright, and I might come here again because it's closer to home than the other places I like. I might have even given the food 4 stars if it had just been described differently on the menu, but the lack of spice in a dish that was supposed to be made hot plus the "homemade coconut ice cream" not being that left a little bit of a bad impression. read more

Nearly 10 years later and Bangkok Thai is still our favorite Thai spot in B-town. We were back in town for an alumni weekend and made sure we ate here. After a full day of tailgating and football game, there's nothing more than I wanted than some light, tasty food. The Som Tum (green papaya salad) hit the mark for me. It's served with shrimp for some protein! It was perfectly prepared - well balanced. They also asked a scale of 1-5 for heat and I picked 3 which was perfect for me. It built in spice but not spicy enough to make my nose run. The hubby ordered the Pad Kee Mao, which I found tasty and he enjoyed it as evidenced by the clean plate. It's possible I ordered wrong (a friend says their larb is pretty good), but I found the Pad Kee Mao to be very disappointing here. While the vegetables were reasonably fresh in texture, the noodles and chicken were squishy and the sauce didn't really taste like anything. Despite ordering it "hot" (3/5), it also wasn't spicy at all. They were also overwhelmed enough that service was extremely slow--my online order took over 30 minutes to be ready, including waiting at the front stand without being helped for ~5 minutes two separate times. read more

I found myself over an hour early for an appointment and thought I'd grab a quick solo lunch. Bangkok Thai isn't a place we normally go and I was craving some spice so it worked out. Lunch crowd wasn't empty but far from crowded. BT is more aesthetically pleasing than my usual place by far - and the food is good but not quite as good IMHO. I had - no surprise- the drunken man's fried rice sans tomatoes and level 4 of 5. Normally I go to the top of the scale but here a 4 is 'Thai hot' and a 5 is "lava" which scared me. The 4 was perfect but I coming back soon and I'll go for lava. If this is my last review you now know why :) Service was great, friendly and lunch came super quick - too quick for my situation but on a normal work day I would have been delighted. My go-to is usually the Pad Kee Mao (Mow), but this time, I was in the mood for curry. Unfortunately, the curry didn't quite hit the mark; it lacked flavor and just wasn't very tasty. I'm not sure if it was because I went for the spiciest spice level, which might have drowned out the other flavors. Whatever the reason, it simply wasn't up to par. I've had better Massaman Curry at My Thai, and that's saying something. Coincidentally, I visited with the same company as my last review in 2019. My bestie, who always opts for the Pad Kee Mao, let me taste hers, and I regretted my Massaman Curry choice. As for the service, it was okay. My best friend and her mom are regulars, and they had a good chat with the possible owner. However, the chatting seemed to take precedence over order writing. This led to a small hiccup where the server forgot about the appetizers they ordered. Of all the Thai places in Bloomington, this is the best Thai restaurant! The only downside, it is the most expensive. The Thai style chicken wings were delicious, crunchy, the sauce was amazing, but the meat quality was a 4/5. Now the Pad Thai was phenomenal! It had a great flavor, not too spicy, and the noodles were exquisite. In my opinion, a Thai restaurant is only as good as their Pad Thai and that's why Bangkok is the best in Bloomington! My son is headed to IU and I saw this place in both yelp and YouTube videos so we decided to try it. It's cool that there is a street with so many ethnic foods from all over the world and this is one of the spots on the street. The outdoor patio was really nice to sit in when we dined there in April. The service was friendly and prompt. The food was pretty good especially considering it's a small college town. I tried to go back again on a recent trip with my son in June but it was closed for lunch. I'll definitely go back though in the Fall. read more

Wow! Found this place by happenstance, and boy am I glad. The food is so fantastic! I ordered online for takeout and it was great! I got the appetizer combo, this was phenomenal! The crab Rangoons were the best I've had here in Bloomington! The spring rolls were very good as well. The tofu triangles were okay, a bit soggy but I expected that as it was take out. The highlight of the combo were the chicken saytan! Wow those were so flavorful, despite being thinly cut it was not chewy. The sauces are amazing! I was blown away by the cucumber sauce, it was fresh, and tasty! The other two were great as well, but nothing out of the ordinary. My second dish was the Pad See Ew, I got it in medium with tofu. It was very flavorful, the sweetness was just right and the spice was okay. (I did order light as I tend to the first time trying a new place, but there was a nice kick to it.) the tofu was nice and bouncy with a bit of a crisp, my favorite. The noodles were a bit all over the place, some crunchy, some less than, I personally enjoy that but some may not. Overall, this place was great! It is a bit pricier than other Thai place around town, but i believe it is totally worth it. The staff was very nice and cheerful. I'm hoping to dine in next time. It can be easy to miss this restaurant if you're not looking for it. It's tucked behind kroger & Before i googled the location I didn't even know it was there. Let me tell you I am so happy I found it. Not only is the food delicious, the service is fast & friendly. I believe the owner (possibly not the owner) is there every-time i order. A different Thai restaurant than most in Indiana. One of owners and head chefs used to run kitchen at a now closed thai restaurant in the city that was very good and authentic. Menu has the basics but has some deeper cuts not found on most menus in midwest such as kana moo krob (crispy pork belly with chinese broccoli stir fry), pad ka prao gai sub (traditional thai style basil stir fry with ground chicken), moo dang wonton soup (thai style bbq pork with house made chicken wonton soup), thai style tom yum noodle soup (not simply tom yum soup with noodles),etc. Place is very clean, almost fancyish, and service is stellar. Beer and wine on menu as well with solid drink specials. Prices are slightly higher than other restaurants, by a buck or two per dish, but portions are solid and taste and quality worth it. What I love about Bangkok Thai is how easy it is to order online and pick up from their restaurant. They're always accurate with their orders, have a good range in spice levels online, and the food is well packaged to be hot. This past weekend I ordered from there and, due to other circumstances, was a solid 30-40 minutes late picking it up after its completion. They were very kind and I was shocked that when I got home, my food was still hot. The pineapple fried rice was nicely balanced. We got to meet the chef who is from Thailand and worked in a 5 star hotel. We met his wife. They were all so wonderful and inviting. We really really enjoyed ourselves.
