Cute little strip mall local restaurant find. Tucked away at the end of the mall, it's a quiet little spot to grab a delicious Thai meal. I had vegetarian soft spring rolls with a sweet chili sauce and Orchid tofu with extra veggies. Both were very good... definitely repeatable and recommended! When we were there it was quiet but busy. Had a really great lunch experience at Thai Orchid! We started with these Spicy Basil Wings that were awesome! Crispy, crunchy, flavorful, and really not that spicy. I had the Drunken Noodles or Pad Khee Mao, and this is not my favorite Thai dish. Flat noodles, sweet Thai basil, and I went with chicken for my protein. My wife got a fried rice dish with pork. The rice was good, but the pork looked like it was boiled. I would stick with shrimp or chicken. Very clean interior. My server forgot my soup/salad, but I don't judge an entire staff from one server. I have been a huge fan of this restaurant for the past few years, but I will admit that I have never stepped foot inside (even pre-covid)! We have either had it delivered or my wife has gone to pick up our order. Regardless of how it makes it to my mouth, they are so delicious that my mouth is watering as I type at 8:15am. They made me a believer of soup and I am NOT a soup fan, but their Tom Kha is literally my favorite! I now judge other Thai restaurants on their Tom Kha and I always come back to Thai Orchid. I have an internal battle every time I order from there too because I would like to branch out to other dishes, but my heart refuses. As for my wife, she switches between the Chicken Cashew and the Pad Pak which I will also admit are delicious. We also cannot order without adding Crab Rangoon to the list! I am a huge fan of Thai food & this place was right up my alley. New owners as of 6 months ago and they are off to a great start. First, location. Easy to find, ample parking. Secondly, there are a ton of items to choose from on the menu which is rare. I will post some picks of the wings and Pad Thai. Both were amazing!!! Thai coffee for lunch, and we were on our way. Better than regular coffee for sure. I believe they put half and half in with the iced coffee, and something that tasted a little sweet as well. Lastly, staff is beyond friendly! Do NOT recommend. We were first time customer 7/7/2023. Paid over $70.00 for order. Appetizers weren't good enough to eat. we each ate enough of our bland, mediocre meals to satisfy our hunger. the coconut cake was terrible and also not consumed. Leftovers tossed, something I never do. Fb msg sent to restaurant. Response I received in return, advised to try dine in next time. Thats it. There obviously will be no next time, d/t the lame, arrogant, and flippant response. The two meals, the appetizer and the cake were all poor food quality and before tip to driver, bill over $70.00. I ordered carry out and when I got there my coconut cake was not quite ready so I waited and watched a bunch of people come in to pick up their carry out orders as well. I got the Panaeng Curry! It was delicious, perfect mild spice but a bit watery! Portion size was good! The soft spring rolls were delicious! The coconut cake was great as well! Kansas Citians know that good eats are waiting for them past the most pedestrian strip mall exteriors. This is no secret by now and although the same could be said for Long Island and Queens (yes, it's true) and possibly dozens of other cities, I am continuously surprised by all that these places have to offer. Thai Orchid, for example, has an entire page of vegetarian entrees. But no Tao Hu Hor (bean curd skin), sadly. Almost as rare a find: vegetarian Thom Ka soup! I was ecstatic to see it there and it did not disappoint. I ordered tofu & green beans with chili sauce and they let you specify four degrees of hotness. I chose "extremely" hot (and the waiter asked to make sure, "Thai hot?" Oh yes, Thai hot times two, please!) It came out *almost* hot enough, but they have chili paste if you want it. Now the problem: there was definitely fish sauce in my dish. I ordered it in a section labeled "Vegetarian" not "Vegetables" so this is not cool. I didn't send it back because I didn't want to waste food, but I guess for next time I'm going to have to check on what I order. I don't know about Thai Orchid, but I know of Thai restaurants that pre-make their sauces so leaving it out may not be an option. Just a caveat to my fellow vegetarians. The flavor was fine, but definitely fishy. I probably wouldn't order the dish again, because I prefer more vegetables. Other than that, the service was above par, the interior was cozy and they have a full bar FYI (skip the wine, trust me). read more

This is the best Thai food around! I love it hot and the Orchid chicken is the best! Also good are Basil Rice, Chili Rice or any of the fried rices. Of course you can never go wrong with the Pad Thai. If you're looking for a good appetizer, Try the veggie spring rolls or the zucchini twister (fried zucchini served with plum sauce... I Ordered takeout tonight and specifically told her what I wanted. Order was wrong and she tried to say "Oh yea they usually do that." (Rice On the side) food all mixed together! I went in tonight(New Year's Eve) right when they opened(5pm). I put in my order, the server said it would be about a half an hour. I was cool with that, the food is made to order. I sat on the bench they have just looking at my phone. Then I looked to my left, and Holy Crap, they had, no lie, about 30 to go orders lined up! In Kansas City for a concert (and obligatory trip to IKEA) and found this DELICIOUS Thai restaurant. After reading some reviews on yelp, our group of three decided to give Thai Orchid a try. So glad we did! The restaurant was pretty busy for a Wednesday afternoon, but we were seated quickly and our server was very pleasant. Our group of three each got the lunch special -- more than enough food to fill you up. We started with a Thai Spring Rolls appetizer and ordered the Drunken Noodles (Pad Kee Mao) with moderate spice and an order of Thai Fried Rice. The dishes were flavorful and delicious! I am still thinking about the Thai Fried Rice several days latter. Would absolutely recommend and cannot wait to return on a future trip to KC. read more

Thai Orchid is a small Thai restaurant with standard vegetarian offerings, located in a strip mall near Shawnee Mission North. I was visiting Kansas City and visited Thai Orchid with a friend. I ordered a plate of vegetarian Thai spring rolls and red curry with tofu and veggies, medium. Thai Orchid had the best red curry with tofu and vegetables that I've had in Kansas City to date. The tofu was cut into these nice triangles that were crisp, but soft. The level of spice was right on the mark. They absorbed the curry's flavor very well. What's so regrettable is that I didn't take a picture - I just couldn't stop stuffing my face to record the experience for Yelp. The service was a bit confused on one thing: one server told me the Thai spring rolls had pork and shrimp in them. The other server told me they were vegetarian. I had ordered a full appetizer portion of the spring rolls on the recommendation of my close friend that I was with, who is also vegetarian. So, I cancelled the order. Finally, a third, elderly lady came out to us and said they were vegetarian. Hearing this, I reordered them. It was a messy interaction. This series of events took so long that I finished my red curry, realized that I hadn't taken a picture, and subsequently photographed the spring rolls. Crushed it. The spring rolls are fried well, filled with tasty veggies and cellophane noodles. The lunch menu is very simple. I believe they have a larger, more expansive menu for dinner. I'd definitely come back if I were in the Kansas City area, and I'll make sure to take a picture. read more

I had plenty of time at the DMV and wanted to get lunch. I love Thai food, but from the outside the place looked like a hole in the wall, but luckily a group of 3 people were leaving talking about how good it was so I decided to give them a chance. Once inside I was greeted very cheerfully and seated immediately. My favorite dish was not listed and when I asked about it I was informed that it was on the dinner menu and larger but they had no problem making it for me. The wait seemed a bit longer than expected but well worth it, the food was fantastic!! The portion sizes are very reasonable. The food here is excellent. I'm a big panaeng chicken fan, and Thai Orchid does a great job with it. The pad Thai is also really good. On the appetizer list, I love the crispy squid, and the steamed dumplings are also great. But here's the trick: avoid this place during busy hours, especially Friday nights. I'm somewhat of a picky eater (to say the least), but I'm not shy about trying new things. I had never had thai food before, but after being told that it is a cross between indian and chinese food, I knew that I would like it. So, my co-workers and I went here during our lunch break one afternoon. Thai Orchid is another restaurant where the outside makes it look worse than the inside. Inside the restaurant, the decor is simple, but classy, and seems out of place for where the restuarant is geographically. That being said, I think that Thai Orchid is doing the best they can with what they have location-wise, and their food is a gem in this suburban area. It did take a while for one of the waitstaff to acknowledge us and take our drink order, even though it wasn't that busy. However, once we got our orders taken (remember that soup or salad is extra to your meal during lunch-- they ask if you want some but don't mention it's extra) and got our food, I was glad I came. I got the chicken Pad Pra Ram, which is your choice of meat in a peanut sauce with steamed vegetables underneath. It was amazing! My dish was $7.50, which when I was ordering, I believed that that was a little pricey for the amount of food I got, but once I realized how full I was from eating just the chicken, I shut up. :) Overall, this seems to be a very authentic Thai place with good, filling food. They offer take-out and I've heard their bubble teas are amazing, but I didn't try one when I was there-- I'll have to save that for next time! read more

We were out walking and stopped in here for a lite dinner. We ordered the fresh spring rolls. Each roll was full of jelly noodles, lettuce, mint and shrimp. A large order of 5 is perfect for a meal. The peanut sauce tonight had a bit of a bite to it and was a welcome change! The service was quick and it was nice to visit with our waitress for a bit. This was a surprising find. The wife and I stumbled upon Thai Orchid one evening. We were not expecting this quality of food judging from the outside appearance. From outside it looks like a place you get some crappy take out. We were actually impressed to find a simi formal dining experience with some of the best tasting Thai curry we have ever had... And we have had our share of Currys. We only ordered a pork Curry and spring rolls but they were the perfect combination that one portion of each fed us both. I will happily be returning as I am craving this curry again already. I'm only giving 4 stars as the service needs work. The waitress seemed inpatient and rushed.
