The restaurant is modest and Un appointed but where the aesthetics and design lack the food and service make up for it. The food was fast, piping hot (on a chilly, rainy day) and quite tasty! This is my second review of Thai Diner. My first review was shortly after it had first opened. While we were happy with the food, we were disappointed by the uncomfortable seating, consisting of wooden chairs without cushions. This has completely changed! Now there are cushions on all of the chairs and are very comfortable. The menu they provide in the restaurant has very small print. You might prefer to choose what to order from their online menu before you arrive. They still have a BYOB policy, that we liked a lot. We brought our own bottle of wine. They provided wine glasses with no corkage charge. We ordered many of the same things we got the first time, but this time I also got the Cashew Salmon. We were there on a Friday, and were told the salmon and the basa fish came in on Wednesday. We were surprised by the thick cut of salmon, larger than usually provided at restaurants. Also the medium spice level was a good choice. I liked the salmon, but it was not a match for the Tom Yum Soup with tofu added. It was wonderful. I can't even imagine returning to the Thai Diner without getting the Tom Yum Soup. It is a must! We liked the fact that they have brown rice as a substitute for the white rice, if you prefer. We have not yet tried their Curry Bowls, which come with jasmine rice. read more

We lived on the west coast and have tried hundreds of Thai places , thats our goto spot when traveling throughout the USA PR and Bermuda. This place has to have been the most salty we have ever had. We got the pleasure of having Maddie and Ann serving us today. Classical music played while the wonderful thai herb aromas filled the restaurant. The outside of the restaurant does not justice to the inside. Thai tea, Crab Rangoon, pad sa eww and, crab fried rice were absolutely amazing! I am hooked. We definitely will be coming back. 1st time here. Jim and I are on a road trip and went 21 miles out of way to try this place based on reviews. Worth the extra drive. We had egg rolls and dumplings for appetizers. They were both quite tasty and sauce with the dumplings...yummy! For dinner we shared the Pad Thai Gang Dang. That's a mouthful to say. When our friendly server asked how spicy she could tell I was waffling between mild and medium. I usually say medium but I've had a couple of experiences where that was too spicy. Our server suggested mild+. It was perfect amount of spicy. Meal was delicious and I wish we could have taken the leftovers, but road trip made that impossible. Stopping at Lawrence to spend the night after the game and Chris and I are both starving. Lol. He asked me where/what I want for dinner. Of course. I have to open Yelp for help! Browsing through, I found several restaurants that we haven't tried, so I asked if he was down for Thai food. So off to Thai Diner we went. The place was bright and very clean. For starter, we shared a Green Papaya Salad with Beef which was spicy but it was so good I didn't want to put my chopsticks down! For the entrée, we had Pad Thai Gang Dang which was equally delicious with huge shrimps and Tom Yum Soup which was perfect for a cold winter night! Needless to say, we shall return! read more

I really like this Thai restaurant, probably the best Thai restaurant in Lawrence area. I love the pad Thai Gang Dang. It's different from the pad Thai at other Thai restaurants. The secret ingredient is they add peanut sauce to the pad Thai which gives it a more rich and creamy taste. I never had anything like it before and for me this is something unique and special about this place. For me to write this review 10 months later and still remember what I had truly says something. Way overpriced for portions and quality. I orders the peanut chicken that's supposed to have peanut sauce all over it. It didn't seem that it did. The other dish was the fire something and it looked like a bunch of broth with veggies. Not a lot of meat and rhe to go container was 1/2 full. I had reasonably high hopes for this restaurant given all the stars it had received. Unfortunately what little I ordered; shrimp spring rolls, was disappointing. The excess of saran wrap used for the take out order suggested that the rolls had been prepped and stored long before my order was placed. My hypothesis was strengthened as I bit into heavily cilantro'd slightly turned lettuce. The flavor was not bright, fresh and healthy tasting. Rather it was bland. Our first visit we were unaware of BYOB so we were forced to enjoy the food solo and I'm so glad we did. Ordered everything off the specials board. 6 dumpling appetizer (pork, shrimp & veg). They were all so good but that night the shrimp won the comp. We shared the Peanut Sauce Pad Thai Chicken (its a must to get a feel for their spices) with the Shrimp green curry. Yum! It doesn't look like much from the outside (or the inside) but you will not go wrong with the food here! My absolute favorites are the green curry, pad see ew, and pad Thai with shrimp and chicken. Important: don't be overly ambitious when they ask you how spicy you want it -- the medium heat is SPICY. Be prepared to spend about $15-20 a person but it's totally worth it, because I can always get 2 meals out of one entree order. read more

Ridiculously overpriced and the portions are almost offensive. A $5 thai tea should not be served in the same size cup as a free water (both comparable to a mcdonalds small). The $16 chicken and broccoli (pictured) was barely enough for my toddler. The food is okay flavor-wise but its pretty much a rip-off for what you're getting. I am a bit mixed about this place. The food was good but not sure it was worth the cost. I realize all food is getting expensive today, but the food seemed a bit too expensive. The environment is very simple but was fine. The Pad Thai was great and loved it. The Red curry was also good. The egg rolls seemed very basic and not worth getting. This place is a small, but the flavor is BIG. I honestly couldn't believe my eyes when I saw BYOB on the door, walked in and asked my waitress, "is it true?" She said yes then suggested I got get a beverage, and she would reserve my table until I got back. My friend and I literally left grabbed the new pineapple flavored Redd's from Myers liquor down the street, and came back. First we ordered crab rangoons to start, and they were light, crisp, and I wish it came with the sweet & sour sauce instead of the same butter sauce that was on the table. I made a rookie mistake and ordered my noodles hot, when I should've got medium. Good thing my friend ordered the special "Gang Dang" mild so we halved each of our plates, switched and the spice was perfect. The service was kind and patient, especially for first timers. The only suggestion or con to my visit is there wasn't any air circulation. No fan, no windows to open, nothing. As small as this restaurant is it stays packed due the quality of the food, but the only downfall to visit was there wasn't any air circulation. A fan or maybe letting the breeze through the front doors would be an easy fix. read more

Walked in this evening to pick up my food. As I waited, this waitress came in and out of the kitchen a few times but I refrained from bothering her because she seemed pretty busy. She ignored me the whole time but I honestly didn't make a deal out of it. Then, this white couple walks in to pick up and she's all of a sudden very jovial to them, asking how she could help etc.. She checks their order and reassures them that it will be ready soon. And just as if I was invisible she hurries back into the kitchen, and dismisses me when I try to make eye contact to talk to her. Less than a couple of minutes later, she addresses the white couple again and tell them their food will be ready soon. I was stunned. Luckily another employee came out of the kitchen and asked for my name: my food was sitting there the whole time!!! I hate to make things about race but as an African/Black man, the situation couldn't be more obvious. Visited this place while on a business trip. It was walking distance from my hotel. I stumbled across this place while driving back from Bud Walton Arena. I first walked in and it was full. I was then instructed to find a seat in the back room. As a man of color, I couldn't believe what I had just heard! lol. But she was literally telling me there's more seating in the back room. I was then seated and given water and a menu. The menu is quite expansive with a variety of dishes. I ordered Pad See Ew. It was good, but a bit too sweet and lack of spice for my liking. I have been by this place hundreds of times. I have searched for a place with great Thai food. Finally I decided to give it a try and WOW how have I been missing out on yummy Thai food so long. This place has great food. My only caution is that the seasoning levels are definitely on the Spicy side. I usually like spicy. My sister in law and I both ordered medium spice. I would actually say this was much spicier than medium. Even the green papaya salad was "lip on fire" spicy. Next time I will request mild, but there will be a next time very soon! read more

Love this place!!! I was sad when DonDon Japanese restaurant closed in this location but the fact that Thai Place moved in immediately erased any sorrow. We're so happy to finally have a good Thai place here in Lawrence. My husband grew up in Topeka so we had been going to Tuptim for years and we were thrilled when they opened a place here. Sometimes his family comes here from Topeka to to eat here and the owners remember them, very nice folks. Some of the names of dishes are different, but as far as I can tell the food is the same. My faves are the dark soy noodle, sweet chili noodle, and soft rice wraps. They make a good pad thai, and always have interesting specials on the board. Oh and GET THE SOUP of the day, it's always so good no matter what it is, I think they might have some kind of magical powers. This place is family run and the service and food are consistently awesome across the board. read more

Heaven forbid one has to call them as they will feel stupid for ever attempting to communicate with the "main phone answerer" - after what feels like a mandatory immediate 10-20 minute hold, one will be met with a super cuntasstic attitude.
