First time trying this place and it was alright. We had the basil wings, tiger cry beef, and tamarind chicken stir fry. The basil wings and tiger cry beef were good but there's other Thai places in KC that have a better version of these dishes. The tamarind chicken was flavorful and came with a healthy serving of veggies but the chicken was quite dry. I think this dish would have been a lot better with dark meat but instead it's served with breast meat. Probably not a dish I would get again if I come here. read more

We all placed our orders - I got the pra ram chicken (mild - no extra spice added) and the sweet mango with sticky rice, just in case they ignored my explicit instructions. Sure enough, they did. I could not finish the chicken entrée as it was exceedingly spicy. Fortunately I had the mango with sticky rice to fall back on, which was decent. This time I decided to try Panang beef curry with medium spicy level, which claimed to be most popular curry, my son ordered Gapow. I think my choice was correct, the curry was creamy with delicious coconut milk and peanut panang sauce, it's perfect companion for the rice. My husband and I ate here as he's been to Thailand and wanted me to experience Thai food. For our appetizer, we ordered the steamed dumplings, which were very delicious. For our entrees, I ordered the chicken fried rice and he ordered the seafood pad Thai. When ordering dishes like these here, you have to select the level of spice you want: mild, medium, or hot. I chose mild for mine and he chose medium for his. Unfortunately, I think they got our spice choices mixed up because my entree was so spicy, I could only eat a bite so he gave me his entree, which was barely spicy, in exchange for mine. I really enjoyed my basil fried rice! This dish really shines at this place. I tried my friend's pad thai, and I didn't like it as much. The fried rice was definitely better. The tofu on both of ours was a really good texture and flavor, it's hard to get it just right, and they totally did! The dishes that we got as mild were still very spicy. I would almost just get it with no spice next time. I would not order pad thai from here, but I think any of their fried rices would be good to try again! I met a friend here for lunch today and we were both disappointed. I tried to order a glass of wine and even though they had wine there, they said they were waiting on a license. Salads came with our lunch orders, but we both thought the dressing was too sweet. We shared a Thom Yum soup and that was pretty good. My friend had the spicy ginger chicken and it lacked any flavor. I ordered red curry and the curry was delicious. The other things in it (chicken and vegetables) weren't that great. I asked for soy sauce for my rice and they brought out the packets that have no taste. It seemed like the same boiled chicken was used in every dish we tried. My husband and I came at 8pm on a Tuesday. The restaurant doesn't have a great overall feel. However, the food is excellent. We were greeted promptly upon arriving. However, they seemed to be confused where to seat us despite being mostly empty. The flooring was pretty sparse, which is normally fine but looked very uneven and I saw spots that looked suspiciously like mold (I didn't want to get close enough to confirm). I got the Siam Chicken and he got the Gapow. Both were very, very good. The Siam Chicken is basically chicken breast with sautéed shiitake mushrooms in a ginger and garlic sauce. The ginger was so good: it wasn't just shaved ginger. It was 2" long strings of fresh ginger that were soft and delicious. You don't get a ton of food for the money. COVID-19 Pandemic Review Update: Hot Basil has enhanced their take out experience during the pandemic, to be sure. The website has been further equipped with an ordering menu that is average with regard to ease of navigation and ordering; my only critique being that it still allows you to move through the ordering even at times when the restaurant is closed, thus being frustrating to have spent 10 minutes ordering, only to find out you can't execute it. They have curbside service and in-store pickup available. Parking availability for said pickup suffers, as it always does with this location. They've met or beat their ETAs each time we've ordered in terms of when the order would be ready. Thai food seems to be quite conducive to keeping warm and fresh en-route to home, if not quite as perfectly luscious as taking receipt of the food and consuming it on-premise. One of my favorite Thai places, whenever I come home to Overland Park, I always request it. It's always super freshly made and very flavorful. Haven't found anything comparable in Baltimore. My brother always orders a whole order of crab rangoons for himself--that's how delicious they are. We get another order for the rest of our family. We also always order the Thai fried rice and spicy basil chicken stir fry, and I am never disappointed. Their "medium" spice has a nice kick (and we are brown, so think carefully). Their tom yum soup will drain your sinuses IMMEDIATELY. (In sickness and in health, it'll be there for you.) Very flavorful. My dad likes their curries as well. Definitely come support this business! We ordered takeout to support local business and many of my friends have enjoyed their experiences and food here. My friends have said it is "hit or miss" occasionally. Unfortunately, I must have come on an off day. We ordered the appetizer trio, panang curry, and tom yum soup. When we ordered, we were told to leave and come back rather than wait in the store (I assume due to covid19). We came home and started off with the appetizer. It was great to try a sample of what they offer. Everything in the appetizer came out tasty, fresh, and warm. However, I am not too sure about their peanut sauce in the sense that it did not taste what I have had in the past at other restaurants. The panang curry was good, however, it definitely contained too much sugar. There was also very little meat present in the food. When I tried the tom yum soup, there was a large piece of ginger that overpowered the soup. Overall, it was fine, but I wish they paid more attention to the quality of their food and portioning of ingredients. I will try it again, but was slightly discouraged by the experience. read more

Their Tom Kha soup is the best I have ever had and their cashew chicken is very good and the sauce is more brothy than the sticky, syrupy kind most places serve. Me and my husband's favorite place for pad thai after trying 4-5 places nearby in the Overland Park area. The pad thai is not too saucy or sweet. Has great wok hei flavor and is a good portion for lunch. We always go here if when we are in the mood for pad thai. A great close runner up is the basil noodles (drunken noodles) it has the sweetness of pad see ew but the herby basil flavor mixed in and they don't skimp on the veggies or the basil. I wanted all to know that I did go to a local Doctor while I was in Kansas City; the doctor told me there was no doubt I had food poisoning. I was in KC on business and had only eaten one other meal that day with a colleague (who was also at the dinner at Hot Basil). We both had the same salad at Olive Garden for lunch out of the same bowl, and he did not get sick; therefore, there is no doubt where I got this from. I am posting this update because I want everyone to think twice before they eat here. What I went through was horrific. Two days later, I am still not feeling 100%. I also called the restaurant, and although they were closed, I did leave a message that I had gotten sick at their establishment. To date, no one called me back. They should be ashamed. Food poisoning is very serious, especially for people with health issues, and I am a diabetic; I intend to report this to the health department in Kansas City. I cannot understand why anyone would serve unsafe food to the public. read more

Delicious! Been here three times now and really enjoyed the food. My husband really likes the pad thai. It is on the drier side but the sauce is perfectly sweet with a savory umami flavor and hints of wok hei. When you go for a lunch special it comes with a simple side salad of iceberg and tomato with a creamy house dressing or a cup of hot and sour soup. The crab Rangoon are tasty but the wrappers are made with the thin ones crispy instead of the thicker ones you find at Chinese restaurants. We've also had their pad kee mow (drunken noodles) and it had a perfect amount of basil. Sometimes other places are skimpy on the basil in this dish but not here. It is super tasty and a nice alternative if you generally like the pad see ew. It's the same sweet soy flavor but more herby because of the basil. Come and try this place out.
