I'm not sure if all Fridays are like this, but service was some of the worst I've experienced in the entire KC area. We walked in and were seated. It took almost 30 min to get waters and one hour and 15 min to get our apps of calamari and shrimp rolls. Calamari was mostly breading. We ordered a noodle soup, which was forgotten. I would like to get the real experience of dining in, but for now, here's my takeaways: -Good quality Thai food -Round up on the spice level. I went medium to gauge it, and it was not spicy at all. I -Overall, it was a bit average, but rounding up a bit since I only tried one thing and can't paint a full picture With the cold snap, a warm and spicy curry sounded best. With no advance warning, they graciously accommodated all of us, even moving tables so most of the group could sit together. Sister restaurant to Baramee Thai in Crossroads, Phikul Thai is a delicious Thai restaurant in the perfect location to fuel you on a weekend adventure in City Market. The restaurant isn't huge but it can get bustling on the weekends. A little dark and romantic inside. The service is awesome -- the employees are so kind and helpful. They do great take out. I recently visited Phikul Thai Bistro on a Saturday around lunch time. With the buzzing river market, I was surprised by its quiet, calm interior. I was quickly greeted and sat at a comfortable booth table, and given ice water. The woman taking my order was so sweet and made polite conversation with when checking on me throughout my meal and when i went up to the counter to pay. A menu was provided and I was given ample time to browse it and choose my meal. I went with the red curry, medium spice. It had a wonderful kick to it. I was really happy with the portion and fresh white rice on the side. The curry had so much chicken and a great balance of veggies too. This was the worst Thai place of Kansas City. Will seat you and take your order then after a half hour say that they forgot to put in the order and that they are so busy it'll be another hour to get it. Waited over 30 minutes for a margarita that still never got delivered to the table. They don't have enough employees for their traffic and lane the customers for it. My husband had a 6 month deployment to Thailand when he was active duty Marine. All his favorite foods and sauces from his time there he found at this restaurant, authentic, reasonably priced, friendly attentive staff- and me? Thai fried fish & veg with Sam rod sauce. My always dream Thai meal. I can get it here with catfish which is very delicious. I prefer Chilean sea bass for this dish but it can be pricey for customers so I'm sure is hard to carry. Sister restaurant Bamboo Pennys used to allow a Sam rod sauce for their Chilean sea bass but last time we were in, no one knew what I was talking about regarding Sam rod sauce. Crab rangoons! I'm a fiend for them and absolutely had to try the ones at Phikul Thai Bistro. The pieces were smaller than the average crab rangoon, but they packed a punch of crispy and creamy goodness. The sauce accompanying it had a less viscous texture than what I'm used to, and accidental dripping was unfortunately common. Honeydew boba! I didn't expect it to come out in a semi-fancy glass, rather than the typical plastic to-go cup. The initial sip through the straw delivered a quite warm tea, possibly from the freshly cooked boba? The rest of it was cold. I couldn't really tell there was boba from looking at it, and I would guess maybe only 8-10 boba balls were in there. While I liked the glass detail, there was another detail that raised an eyebrow from me. It wasn't going to slice any arteries, but the rim was chipped. Though, with boba I drink with the straw anyway. It's still important to be mindful of potentially harmful glass. Yellow Curry Fried Rice! With a choice of shrimp for my protein, this was quite yummy. I went with a medium spicy level, and the medium delivered. Very accurate. The portion size was quite large, and I took some home with me. The vegetables felt more like decoration, and I do wish there was more of the dish dedicated to them. Sweet Sticky Mango Rice! This dessert is quickly rising among my favorites, and even though the previous orders left me quite stuffed...second stomach for dessert! The ratio of mango to rice was 1:1, and the coconut cream had the perfect level of sweetness. I'd go to any Thai place for this dessert alone! TL;DR: If you're a local, there's cheaper Thai food south with comparable or better quality, and you can dodge KCMO's tourism tax. If you're an out-of-towner, you can get Thai food that's a little more special at Waldo Thai or you could go to one of the many spectacular, non-Thai restaurants in downtown KC. Phikul Thai and Baramee Thai (another popular Thai restaurant in Crossroads) are owned and operated by the same chef, and the food is virtually identical. Both will fulfill your craving for Thai food--it's hot, it's tasty, and the right flavors are there--but there isn't quite the finesse that brings Thai food from good to great. The noodles in the chicken pad se ew lacked any kind of smokiness (comes from cooking noodles in smoking oil on a hot wok) or chew. The pad ka prao tasted more like sausage(?) than anything else. All things considered, if I lived in KCMO, I could see myself ordering from Phikul on a lazy weekday night. I'd still like to try their tom yum and pad thai, both of which have received good reviews from others. Tips: Takeout: Phikul is likely to be a better experience for takeout. The staff is not very attentive, the space is large but rarely occupied by more than a few people, and the AC is a bit too strong.
