Went to Thai Smile 2 a month ago with a friend. The service and food were nothing short of excellent. We ordered the bento box lunch - choice of two entrees, rice, roll, soup and fried wonton. It left us wanting more. So for my friend's birthday we drove back. Probably the worst service I have experienced. Again, we ordered the bento and was informed that the pineapple fried rice was not available for the bento. Showing disappointment I told her we had it before. " No, no...it comes with rice. The cooks in the back will not understand what you are ordering and it will not come out right." The cooks apparently only comprehend pineapple fried rice on plate. ?? We went with pad thai and cashew chicken. She brought the soup and it was excellent. Then we got our entrée. The pad thai was okay. Our server failed to ask us what 'heat' level we wanted and it was bland. The cashew chicken was in a watery red sauce with peppers and onions. There were two cashews. No appetizer was served. When I politely voiced that this lunch in quality and service differed greatly from our other experienced the server just goes "okay." She did not offer to bring the rest of the order nor did she make any attempt to replace the unsatisfactory order. She did not come back to our table. We also noticed the manager made a point of speaking to each customer at their table. Somehow he missed ours. When I paid the bill I asked to speak to the manager. He was politely informed that it was not a good dining experience and part of the lunch was never served. He said , "Okay." I have mixed emotions on this place. While I hesitate to condemn the restaurant based on one bad experience there was no effort or concern on the manager's (owner?) part to satisfy his customers. Why would I want to return? read more

Best Thai place in Muncie! Okay it may be the only Thai place in Muncie, but it sure is good. The lettuce wraps are my favorite! My boyfriend and I live close and walk over when we're too lazy too cook. The food gets to us fast when we order it to go. We always enjoy eating Thai Smile. We usually have a good experience however I bought my daughter a gift card for there for Christmas last year. She went to use it tonight and they refused it and said they don't take that kind of gift card anymore. That's money wasted. They should accept it regardless of if they use that one or not. I totally agree with Jennifer. I am not in the position to judge the authenticity of this Thai restaurant - I just know what tastes good. And Thai Smile outshines any other Thai place I've been, authentic or otherwise. The service is always fast, the portions are huge and the prices are good. My recommendations: -Tom Yum Goong soup: This is a light broth soup with so many flavors, I don't know where to begin. It's spicy and lemongrass-y and tomato-y and mushroom-y and ... oh, it's so good. I want some RIGHT NOW. I always get mine with the shrimp, but you could get it with no meat at all and it would still be delicious. I like to spoon some over the white rice they serve with the entrees. -Won Ton Soup: The won ton itself is peppery pork-filled goodness, and the broth itself has a slight sweetness to it. I think this might be an acquired taste, especially if you're used to typical bland won ton soup. -Pineapple Fried Rice: Saffron rice with a hint of cinnamon and tons of vegetables and pineapple? Incredible. -Pad Thai: No nonsense - just noodles, peanuts and tasty, spicy sauce. I always get mine with a spice level of 3 (you can order from 0 to 5) and it's just enough to have a "twang" but not enough to make you sweat. As I mentioned, the portions are gigantic, so splitting them might be your best option unless you're really hungry or need leftovers. My only gripes with this place have nothing to do with the service or the food, but that the parking lot is really weird in relation to the entrance of the restaurant. Oh, and there is absolutely no place to stand while you're waiting for a table (but, thankfully, you usually don't have to wait long). I've loved this place before there was a yelp. Now they are twice the size of the old restaurant. The food is still fantastic, (is it possible for it to of gotten better? Ordered crab Rangoon, pineapple fried rice, and 3 flavored chicken. Crab Rangoon: the smallest I've ever had at an Asian restaurant... Nevertheless, probably among the best I've had. Not overly cream cheesy. Pineapple fried rice: kind of bland at first (due to the overly salty chicken...) its not bad, I like the curry flavor in it. Every place does it differently, it's not my favorite.. It is at least decent. 3 flavored chicken: ugh... Ordered it cuz the menu says its the most popular dish. I can't tell the 3 flavors, all I taste was sodium. Chicken had way too much breading and was soggy from that sodium sauce. We had to throw it away, which breaks my heart. Overall, it's alright. The pad Thai is pretty ok, but it's weird to have it served with white rice. Carb overload! I don't feel it's as great as how everyone else make it out to be. read more

I'm confused by all the great reviews for this restaurant. Either people don't know what good food tastes like or we were very unlucky and got food that does not represent what people usually get when they eat here. I love Thai food and was wanting to find a good place in the Anderson / Muncie area. After reading the reviews we thought we'd try Thai Smile 2. The restaurant appeared to be clean and the wait staff was friendly, but the food was awful. I was looking forward to having some hot, spicy Thai food, but other than noodle dishes and curries (which I was not in the mood for) I didn't see or recognize any of the Thai favorites that I am familiar with. My wife ordered the sesame chicken and I settled for the Mongolian BBQ. The only flavor that we got with the sauces that drenched our dishes was sweet. Sickening, syrupy sugar sweet. I asked for a heat level of 3, but there was no heat, no spiciness, just sugar. No flavor but sweet. We ate less than half our food and declined take home boxes. We don't go out often and I am sorry we wasted an infrequent dining experience at Thai Smile 2. read more

This is one of those good 3-star reviews--like, it's A-OK, and that's great and dandy and I would totally come back. It's really like a 3++++ but I can't quite bring myself to a 4. Thai Smile (2) has a nice, clean interior. We went in to order take out and had excellent, quick service. When we were having trouble deciding on spiciness, the cashier offered to just throw in a spice tray so that we could doctor things up on our own (good customer service!). Our food took about 10 minutes to be prepared. The food was yummy and A-OK. I tried the cashew dish with chicken, and I was pleased to see that it was meat and veggies in a thin broth-y sauce, not the gross corn starchy kind. I immediately commented on how bright, beautiful, and fresh the veggies (carrots, peppers, onions, mushrooms) were. The cashews were plentiful, always a plus for me. The chicken was OK. I did a little scoping to make sure there weren't any gross pieces and turned up with a few. I also tried the veggie fried rice, which was tasty and clearly had some authenticity to it. Interestingly, it didn't taste like any other Thai rice/kao pad that I've had, but despite it being different, I still managed to clean my plate. The peas and carrots looked suspiciously once frozen--why couldn't they be fresh like the cashew dish? We landed on spice level 2 (choosing from 1-5), which was good. I could've gone a little hotter--next time! Each of these dishes was $9.50, which I initially thought was a little steep until I saw the portions. Each dish provided three separate meals (yes, that's 6 total meals), so the value was great. The food reheated pretty well. I was a little put off that the restaurant had no website. How could I find the menu to order take out or know what the lunch specials might be? Ultimately, I probably wouldn't drive super out of my way to get to Thai Smile (2), but if I were a BSU student or lived in the area, I imagine this would be a regular for me. read more

Thai Smile is a gem of Thai food located in the sleepy college town of Muncie, IN. The restaurant keeps limited hours and is usually filled with college students (both working and eating). I have been to other Thai places, but this is my home place. I judge all others against this. Not perfect, but very good. The people here treat you right and the owner is generally there and speaking to guests. He is very welcoming and helpful. This is a restaurant, not just a take out place. You are seated and given proper attention. This night we had Kao Soy (Yellow curry) and Three Flavored Chicken. The curry was a suggestion from the waitress and was very good. The Three Flavor Chicken is my wife's old favorite. All of it was very good tonight and done just right. The appetizers were crab Rangoon and no one makes a crab Rangoon that compares to this (to my knowledge). They are Great! They have take out and it is well done. The only issue they have is that on crowded nights the front area gets jammed, but I am sure they are glad to be full. read more

The crab rangoo was okay - small but tasty. I had the ginger lunch entree. The lunch price was moderate. The dinner price will be a little more over priced. Wow, so nice to find a good Thai restaurant in Muncie! The Panang Curry is excellent as is the Basil Fish and the Spicy Green Beans. Service is always speedy and friendly; we've become regulars here in the few months we've been in Muncie on business. I'm adding on to this review to say that I've now had the vegetable stir fry with chicken as well and it's fantastic. The server recommended it to me as something new and yummy! Lots of napa, snow peas, crisp carrots and a light flavorful sauce. I tell them to leave out the baby corn, those things are freakish. read more

My wife and I spent 30 minutes debating whether we should come to Thai Smile 2 or Tuppee Tong Thai Restaurant. We landed on Thai Smile 2 because it was closer. I didn't have super high expectations for my Thai since I'm in Muncie, but we figured we'd give it a shot. We got to the restaurant to place our order for take out there (literally a 2 minute drive and calling wouldn't have made much of a difference). We ordered Fried Rice, Sesame Chicken and Cashew Nuts (Onions, Mushroom, Chicken, Peppers, Cashews). The food was ready and in our hands within 8 minutes of ordering. Note that there were people sitting at a table waiting to order and no one visited them the entire time we were in the restaurant (we placed our order, paid, and received our food, before they were helped, take out may be the best option here). We ordered all of our food with a spiciness level of 2 on a scale from 1-5. I'm pretty sensitive to heat, but this two is definitely most places three. They'll offer you seasonings to make it spicier if you ask so it might be a good idea to ask for less and add more yourself if you're coming here for the first time. Verdict on the food: it was alright. The Fried Rice wasn't up to par with what I'd get at the better Thai restaurants I've been too, but it also wasn't as bland as some of the worst places I've been. I would not order the Sesame Chicken again (which I think is an Americanized Chinese dish anyway so I probably shouldn't have ordered it at a Thai restaurant in the first place) and most of that ended up in the trash. The Cashew Nut was alright. It was really spicy, and didn't do a whole lot for me. All of the vegetables were crisp as opposed to soggy which was a plus. My wife ended up hanging on to the Fried Rice and Cashew Nut leftovers for a second and third meal (there was a lot of food). Overall, I wouldn't come back here as an out-of-towner if I came back to visit. If I was a local I might return. I can't imagine Muncie has a lot to offer in the culinary department. read more

It's been a while since I was last here but I still remember it as the best restaurant in Muncie, where fast food is prevalent. This place introduced me to "Kao soy" (also spelled numerous other ways) and I've been searching for that same dish at every Thai restaurant since, but everywhere else pales in comparison. It used to only be a special that they had sometimes, but now it looks like it has found it's way onto the menu so that would be my recommendation. Not having been to Thailand, I can't speak to authenticity but everyone was able to find something they enjoyed there, with basil chicken and pineapple chicken being some other popular favorites. The staff would come around with fresh rice to each table and it was just an overall lovely experience. If there is one reason I'd ever go back to Muncie, it'd be for this place. I ordered the Mongolian BBQ (minus the meat, add tofu)...o my gosh...the bbq sauce was divine; pineapples, broccoli, peppers...all juicy and smothered in that sauce made a girl loosen her pants and keep on chowing down!! Thai Smile 2 is great. I'm in town for 3 nights and I've already eaten dinner here twice. Staff is very friendly. Panang curry is very good but not spicy; I had to add a lot of chili paste. Green curry is excellent and doesn't need any extra spice. Really good flavor. Rice was the perfect sticky consistency for chopsticks. First time visit but have wanted to come here for years. It was wonderful!!! Started with Crab Rangoon which was made with real crab and had a wonderful sweetness to it. Then on to Three Flavored Chicken with broccoli, pineapple and snow peas and Pad Kee-Mao which was wonderful and not too spicy. Topping it off with a friend banana dessert that comes with whipped cream and a sweet sauce (which I would assume was a coconut milk based sauce) it was good very light dessert but may not fix your sweet tooth if you are looking for that. I came here after a recommendation. I'm from out of town (California specifically). I ordered pad thai with chicken for take out and a side of peanut sauce, which came with a free side of rice. I found the pad thai to be very bland in every flavor except sweet. It was overly sweet and so was the peanut sauce. In my experience, most pad thai comes with tofu in addition to the chosen meat but that was not my experience here. It was simply noodles, bean sprouts, egg, and chicken. There is a variety of wonderful dishes to choose from that's what makes coming and picking something out very hard to do , because everything on the menu I have tried so far has been exceptional! Dishes range from Sweet to Spicy with flavors that are out of this world ! The food is cooked with passion you can taste !!! Some of my favorites : Fish Garlic ( fresh grouper on a bed a cabbage and carrots with a wonderful burst of Garlic to top it off ) writing this has me craving this dish right now :) Duck Basil ( Duck that is cooked to perfection so tender and full of flavor from the basil , onion and red and green bell peppers ). Mongolian BBQ ( this is my sweet tooth dish ;) it reminds me a a sweet and sour but yet has every choice of protein with a variety of veggies and pineapple that when all comes together is just Delicious ). I really like the pad thai, which can easily be made into 2 meals because its so big. I've tasted a few other things that were delicious, such as the coconut soup, spring rolls, and a custard dessert type thing. Everytime I have dined in, the service has been quick and friendly, and the prices are pretty decent. One time, my boyfriend found a fly or gnat or something in his soup, so that was pretty gross. But stuff like that can't be helped sometimes in restaurants, so I'll give them a break. But other than that, its good food! read more

This is the best Thai food I ever had, but I will note that I haven't had many different places. The food quality was great and the flavors were perfect. Along the same lines as another review, I felt this food was way to sweet. I had the chicken and rice soup, which I couldn't finish because it was WAY too sweet and garlicy. The roasted garlic was too potent. I ordered the lunch special with pad Thai and pad siew, but wasn't asked for spice level, so remember to say something if you don't get asked. Both noodle dishes were too sweet, probably compounded by the fact that it didn't have any spice whatsoever. I typically enjoy a medium (3 out of 5 or 6 on a spicy scale, excluding 'authentic Spicy'). I did ask for a spice tray, but it still didn't help me eat the rest of the meal. read more
