Never spent significant time at the pub, but ordered dinner for my wife and I from there on our way back from Greenwood Lake and I was incredibly pleased. My wife got the chili and I the Irish sampler. Both were healthy portions and each of the 6 or so items in my sampler were incredible. We were hoping for just a simple burger or something, but I am a sucker for a sampler and it certainly paid off. Reasonable prices and pretty friendly staff (for the 2 seconds I really interacted with anyone while picking up my order). Will certainly be making this a regular stop on trips back from the lake. I work very close to this place. I enjoy it for lunch. The place has a great bar area. The bartenders are very good and they work quick. The food is pretty good. I recommend the Thatch fries. They are like cheese fries with garlic and parmesan . But it tastes so good. The burgers are good. The place has many traditional and typical Irsh dishes. I have had the bangers and mash. It is very good. The only negative I have to say about this place is the PARKING! The spaces are so tight that whoever designed the PARKING lot must have been parking little mini coppers and not full size cars. Please somebody fix your parking spots. The food is good. I've come here a few times b/c my sister lives in the area. There are not too many bars in the area to compare it to. It really is just like an average bar. nothing crazy special, but nothing horrible. If you are in the area and want a place to go out to, come here. Its a decent sized bar. The prices are average. It's a dive bar. What do you expect. Not great, not terrible. Did not eat here though. Bartenders are nice, they have darts and decent music. I did order a dirty martini and it was disgusting. olives were sad and probably really old and it just didn't taste right, made the whole martini gross. I took 2-3 sips and I just left it on the bar. My friends back home used to make this place their "Cheers", and I can see why. I've eaten and just drank here before, and the vibe is decidedly Irish-pub. Thatcher fries are tremendous, and there's a reason this restaurant was featured in the NY Times some years back. I also had my first Cafe Patron here, so it holds sentimental value for me. The bartenders are friendly, and there's a bunch of TV's to catch the latest games. I always liked the beer keg bench they had outside. I know it's a big local hangout, and on Saturdays it must be raging. The last time I was there, I befriended some old time regulars for telling them my grandfather was a Giants fan. They were each buying beers for the other, telling the bartender "the next one's for XXX from me". Gotta love the old man aspect to it. read more

I went here with my friend for drinks and it was definitely an Irish Pub type feel. I felt like I was in Ireland. We sat at the bar and were consistently helped especially for being as crowded that they were. I had beer from the tap and my friend had wine. It looked like they made mixed drinks as well. We ordered Shepard's Pie which was delicious! There was a juke box that you could spend money to play music and they had numerous TVs around the bar area. Great local spot for Irish American entrees and bar food. Bar side is dim lit and cozy. Dining room is quaint and eclectic but i personally don't like sitting so close to strangers when i come in for dinner. Service is spotty although it seems to be more of a kitchen issue since the servers themselves are ALWAYS nice lovely people, even apologetic when appropriate. We love the thatcher fries as an appetizer or sandwich side. Cheesesteak is fantastic. Burgers are hit or miss. Reuben is always good. Great pint of guinness and good bar food, This is an Irish bar, and a cop bar, at night it's very crowded..... think Porterhouse west. There is an affiliation I believe. Great and authentic Irish Pub! I have been here for lunch a few times, and dinner a number of times. Their fish and chips are excellent for dinner, and their soups are also great. From bangers and mash to a burger, everything has been great. If you are going here, try some of the typical Irish Fare. The regular bar/restaurant type items (wings, pizza, etc) are good enough but not memorable. The service has always been top notch and friendly, and the prices are on the mark as well. Overall, this is one of the most authentic Irish restaurants I have been to for food, especially anywhere in the NNJ area. read more

Sunday fun day. That's what my friends from the area call it, and they often spend a Sunday Fun Day at this joint jus off exit 55 on 287. We decided to join them for some food and drinks on a Sunday Fun Day. Walked in and it was a warm, cozy atmosphere. Got seats at the bar and met our bartender, who our friends knew well. Ordered a few beers and some delicious sangria and everything was on point. For appetizers, we ordered the corned beef and cabbage spring rolls an some buffalo chicken fingers. The rolls were delicious, even if the weren't piping hot. Had to ask for some Russian dressing to go with it, but it worked. The buffalo chicken fingers were good as hell! Perfect sauce to breaded chicken ratio, I'd get them again for sure. I had a cheesesteak wrap, which was actually pretty damn good! Soft chewy wrap concealing a generous portion of cheese, sautéed onions, and thin scliced ribeye. Even the fries were bangin; hot, crispy, and battered. They have loaded fries that looked real good, def. gonna get them next time. Its a solid 4 out of 5 as far as pub grub goes. Only reason for the 4 is our bartender forgot about us a couple if times, and the food took a little longer that I thought it would considering the crowd, but at least they were cool. I've been to Thatcher's on numerous occasions. Since Pompton Lakes is a small town, Thatcher's is a popular happy hour/weekend destination for all ages. the inside is divided into two sections: a bar area with some booth seating, and a dining room for a more formal dinner. One of my favorite things about Thatcher's are their cold pints of Guinness. All of their beers are cold and the glassware is always clean. Every time I order a Guinness, rings are always left in the glass (sign of a clean glass). Most importantly, THEY ALWAYS USE A PINT GLASS! Not only are the drinks cold, but the food is great! One of my favorite menu items is the Rachel (pastrami Reuben). I'm not a huge fan of Russian dressing on my Reuben's (more of a mustard guy), but I enjoy their dressing. The french fries are nothing to brag about, but they're always hot and crispy. I also LOVE their buffalo chicken wrap. Overall, Thatcher's is a great Irish pub. If you're looking for a quieter dining experience, try to come during the week or early on weekends. Once Friday afternoon rolls around, people flood the pub to start their weekend! read more

I recently checked out this place at a recommendation of a friend an I really liked it! I went for lunch and tried their weisswurst sandwich and their Guinness beef stew (on the pick 2 menu, this was really nice for only $10!) and we also ordered the corned beef eggrolls. The corned beef eggrolls were fantastic. The eggroll wrapper was crispy and not greasy, and the corned beef and cabbage had a really great flavor. The extremely spicy mustard they serve with it is fantastic, too. I LOVE strong mustard, so this was exciting. The lunch combination menu is really nice with a lot of nice options. The weisswurst sandwich had a lot of sauerkraut and came with mustard and cheese sauce (I don't particularly care for cheese sauce but because it was on the side it was optional). The guinness beef stew was tasty. The flavors were all there and the potatoes on top were creamy, I just wish there was a little bit more beef chunks in it. Everything was great, the service was nice and the dining room and bar seem very clean and look nice. I definitely want to come back for brunch and drinks! read more

An all around great place! Don't let having "Pub" in the name fool you about their food, it's excellent. They have everything from traditional Irish Fare to American favorites and even a couple of Italian dishes thrown in there. The weekly specials never disappoint. Probably the closest to a real "Irish pub" I've been to in America. The Irish food selection is extensive and fairly authentic (Irish Breakfast served all day!). And they have a "snug" mimicking an Irish cottage! Beyond the Irish fare, on my last visit I had the Skirt Steak and it was fabulous. Mashed potatoes, gravy, and not over-cooked veggies. Sheppards Pie, Bangers & Mash, Irish Guinness Beef Stew, a good steak, an acceptable Fish n Chips - good burgers, tasty corned beef, and a great (albeit loud) place to have some good food with friends and family - what more could you ask for than Thatcher McGhee's! I've been here several times and I've tried just about all my celtic (pronounced 'kel-tic' not 'cel-tic', FYI) favourites. Although I was somewhat disappointed in the fish n' chips, the Guinness beef stew is to die for (and is even better as leftovers when everything is mashed together!). Although not for everyone, it seems. :) They have a fantastic assortment of fine beers (Guinness, naturally!), and a full bar for other drinks to go with whatever you are having. My last trip I had the strip steak special, and it was cooked to perfection, great flavor, and was well worth the price! Every time we've gone it has been busy, and I know why - the place is friendly, affordable, and - like my business - treats every visitor like friends/family - and that is the best thing you can ask for. Again, my only problem with the menu is the average fish n' chips - they can learn alot by visting "A Salt & Battery" in NYC for how to do it better. This was our first time dining here, and I have to say it was a delight. Elba was our server, and she was nothing short of spectacular. Refills with out having to be asked, and a warm friendly smile. The Pastrami is some of the best we have ever had. So lean and juicy. Their house mustard was also delicious. Very good Irish fare as well. At this location there is a separate dining area from the bar which is good if it's family night. Came here for dinner with a friend. My first time. Place was packed. We were seated right away. Waitress was very friendly. I ordered a chicken special with avocado, lettuce and a sauce. It was so yummy I didnt think i would eat it all, but I did. Came with these really crunchy fries and pickles. Fries were good. Also had the cauliflower soup it had bacon it in. Very yummy. And the macaroni and cheese as a side which we shared. Everything was excellent. And for dessert, the Apple Blossom. Wow, we were stuffed after dinner but you got to make room for this dessert. Seven people were given a table for four. Never got service. Smells like old beer and urinal cakes. Stay away. Stay home. You'd have a better experience playing duck duck goose blind folded on 287 during rush hour. If you are even thinking about thinking about going to this joint do yourself a favor and go to sleep instead. Then when you wake up list your house for sale and move to a new town where Thatchers isn't an option anymore. Even if you take a loss on your house you've still won. read more

I've been to Thatcher's many times and normally anyone from out of town that stops by wants to go in since it is within walking distance from me. Ok the place gets very loud, the music makes it hard to talk to anyone in the bar or in the restaurant area - once you get past that (and know what to expect) it is a great little place to frequent. There is a good beer selection. Nothing extraordinary but I usually stick to a Sams on top or their own Irish Stout. Ultimately it is a pub with food that is above what most others offer. Their thatch fries are common at a lot of other restaurants - fries with cheese, bacon, and ranch. But Thatcher McGhee's is simply superior with this appetizer. Crunchy bacon and their french fries are just out of this world. When trying to splurge (in regards to calories) this is usually what I order along with a cheeseburger. If I go anywhere else in the area it just seems to be a waste since it is never nearly as good as their burgers. Another item I normally order when I visit is the Guinness Beef Stew. It is a very good stew with plenty of beef and some delicious mashed potatoes in the center - although I will usually split it with someone since it is a pretty large plate. I haven't strayed far from these dishes since they are just too good to not order when I stop by. But I do love their chili (with cheese melting over the sides) and potato leak soup when it is on the menu. I've yet to have a bad experience at this place. The drinks are a little expensive but always good, and it can get crowded but if you're lucky to snag a table it's not a big deal. I also attended one of their New Year's Eve parties. The tickets were expensive ($100 a head) but for that money you got an open bar, two buffets, live music, party favors and champagne at midnight. I had a wonderful time. They also do trivia night on Wednesday which my friends and I had a ball with! (Not to brag but I managed to get us into third place) The food is delicious, nothing goes with drinks like a big plate of Thatch fries. My dad is crazy about their chicken pot pie and I always loved the lamb stew and corned beef sandwich. It can be a little loud in there and some nights you'll need to wait for a table, but it will be worth it. read more
