Was there last Sunday. Was always happy with Thatcher's but went a few months ago and the post-pandemic menu was anemic at best with almost all the Irish fare gone. Well its almost 100% back. My favorite, the Irish Breakfast is back and was delicious but could do with fresh made hash browns instead of fries like they used to have. Wait staff attentive and friendly, prices reasonable. Some of the new drinks looked really interesting but I couldn't partake because I gave up alcohol for lent! Wife had a blood orange cosmo that was new on the drink list, she was very happy with it. She was very happy with her pear and goat cheese salad as well. Would definitely return again, this time much sooner. read more

This is a nice local Irish Pub that draws business from all across northern NJ. The bar area is spacious and can become very loud when the bar is full. The bartenders are great, very friendly, and they do their best to take care of you if spending quality time and money there. Food menu is decent, with both Irish and regular pub offerings that you'd expect to see. They also do brunch on both Saturday and Sunday which has been excellent each time I have gone. If you're coming here for the nightlife make sure you've got proper ID or you'll be turned away before you get in. read more

We have been going to Thatcher McGhee's about once every other month, and more frequently during the Pandemic when they only had outdoor seating, as it's conveniently located, the food has always been good and the service better than average. However, last night we went about 5:30. The restaurant was not full, and we were shown a table tucked in a corner that was "tiny" to say the least with chairs on only 2 sides because of the corner. I objected and we were shown another table in another corner of the room, almost identical to the first one. I said it would not do and asked for a larger table, and could see a number available. The Host said that's all he had, meaning he would not use a table for 4 to seat 2 people, even though there were tables for 4 already seating 2 people. So we left. I dn't know if I would ever go back to Thatcher's after this experience. Whether this is a new policy there or the 2 Hosts were just acting on their own, I don't know, but it's just not worth it. read more

Paying homage to this place and can't wait for them to open back up again. Everyone that works there is always super chill and accommodating. Me and my brother come eat here every so often and order the thin crust pizza and a bottle of wine. Always a good idea to just order the bottle, prices are reasonable and never too crazy in there. I went last night for the first time and OMG SO GOOD. I had the fish and chips. So crispy and flavorful. The service was great too! Our server was very attentive. Will definitely return. Three of us went to Thatcher's and each ordered a chicken pot pie for dinner. All three of us were shocked when the pot pies arrived. There was virtually no chicken in any of the pies. We thought we were being punked. These meals were completely unacceptable. I order chicken pot pies at various places about once a month because I like them. Never have I been served a pie with such an absurd amount of chicken. The server told me that she hears this complaint all the time which makes me wonder how Thatchers can continue to serve such an inferior product. If they cut the price in half, it would still be an absurd product. Thatcher McGees is terrible. read more

Whomever they have doing the kitchen now is terrible. The fact that a few members of the wait staff use a language barrier as an excuse for super slow (sometimes an hour+ even on dead evenings) and lukewarm food is quite tacky. Speaking of the wait staff, things have really gone downhill over the recent years. To top that whole mess up, you guys fired one of the only good waiters. (Irish gentleman) Bar staff have gotten better, but as someone who maInly goes to the restaurant half this isn't a big factor for me. read more

Super solid. Great place to grab a drink with friends and they have a lot of awesome food options. They do a lot of specials with food and drinks so the menu never gets stale. I ordered via caviar door dash. I was missing a baked potatoe which was my dinner. I called and they apologized that they were supposed to taken kff the website. The owner went out of his way and went to a store and made me the potato and delivered. I have been there a few times and the food is excellent. Customer service above and beyond. Great beer, Good food love the Atmosphere of a bar with a nice restaurant area too. The areas are separated with enough space that the bar noice does not carry into the restaurant. Just okay... I was disappointed since I thought we'd be indulging in awesome Irish fare. Excellent service, comfy atmosphere. The dining area was much quieter than the bar, thank goodness. We had: Corned beef and cabbage egg rolls (bland, more egg roll than filling) Fish and chips (good but also bland - needed seasoning in the breading. They give you like 2 whole fish with decent fries and a couple onion rings, which was a nice touch) Taste of Ireland (my favs were the Shepherd's Pie and lamb stew, the others were really bland, and the chicken in the pot pie was quite dry) I get that Irish food runs to the bland in general, but they could really beef up the seasonings. I'd go back for a nice casual meal, but wouldn't go out of my way to do so. read more

As a guy who has Thatchers tattoo I never wrote a review as I know it will come off as super bias. However I had to take a moment to write one today not about the bar nut the staff. We all know the bar tenders and managers are nice friendly people but often over looked is the wait service. Last night me and my friend came back into NJ for the night which means one thing. ..a lot of people at Thatchers. Our server for the evening was Connor (hope I'm spelling it right) and he was nothing short of fantastic. We bring a lively group that has a lot of special orders and people coming and going from our table all night. Connor was there to help us with everything we needed and had a quick solution to any small problems that did arise. More so than any of this though I'm writing this review because of his attitude. He was friendly and kind and even took a little ribbing from time to time with a smile. I work in the industry and have seen many waiters and waitresses get overwhelmed in these situation and their attitude reflects it. We always male sure to write reviews about people and places we don't like so I wanted to make sure that I took the time to recognize Connor and say thank you for helping us make our memories. read more

Thatchers now gets one start from me. Just went here last night for dinner and drinks with a friend of mine. I ordered my Amstel Light....they took our ID's to scan them....fine. They come back and tell me my license is expired and they cannot serve me (I'm almost 27....come on). The expiration date on my license is 2012 so I'm a little confused/annoyed. I start thinking maybe motor vehicle made a mistake when issuing my license a few years ago (not likely, but you never know!). So I call motor vehicle just now and give them my license number and ask them to check. My license is good until 2012...just like it says. Thanks Thatchers....better get a new license scanner because yours obviously is not working. Not that this is a huge deal...I couldn't get a beer...so what. But they came to my table....in the dining room...and scanned my license twice in front of me and the entire dining room. Its a little embarrassing because now it looks like I'm walking around with a fake ID or something. When the whole time it was their scanner that was not working. I highly doubt I'll be back here any time soon just for this reason. read more

NOW THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL AUTHENTIC! I've been here a dozen times and I can honestly say it is always good: Here's the breakdown: Food: 5 Stars. Appetizers The appetizers are unique and quite good. The corned beef and cabbage rolls are a personal favorite and are a cross between kreplach and an egg roll. Ridiculously good! The French Onion soup is also tasty and prepared correctly. I recommend getting the scones to accompany the meal. They taste as good as some that I remember from my childhood (Made by a friend of my mother) Entrees! You need to try the Irish Sampler otherwise know as the taste of Ireland: It's a medium sized portion of Irish Bangers, Guinness Beef Stew, Chicken Pot Pie, Irish Lamb Stew and Shepherd's Pie all on top of a bed of Mashed Potatoes for under $15 bucks. You get a ridiculous portion of everything and it's all good. I especially like the Chicken Pot Pie! It's extremely rich and creamy. Awesome! The Corned Beef and Cabbage is the best I've ever had. It's overflowing on the plate and cooked perfectly. Perfect ratio of corned beef to cabbage. You'll laugh but they also make a real good Penne with Vodka. My sister had it the last time I went and said it was one of the best. (My sister is an authority on all Italian food) Similarly, they make a good cheese steak Service: 5 Stars: Service has always been top-notch. Servers are pleasant and efficient. No Complaints! Atmosphere: This place is as authentic as you can get, right down to the thatch roof rooms that you can sit in which look like a little hut. It's a wonderful place to have a meal especially with a family or large groups. The night we went, my father ran into someone he used to work with. His daughter and friends happened to be singing Irish Folk Music as entertainment. Verdict: This is the place to go for real-deal Irish cuisine. They also have a bar that serves good beers on tap. The hostess who seats you by the dining area is rude as hell. I approached her to ask for a table and she blatantly ignored me while she chatted with a staff member. When I finally interrupted them to ask for a table she told me that I couldn't be seated until my friend arrived and that that was the reason why she didn't greet me. Again, rude as hell. With that said, our actual waiter was very nice. On to the food - I ordered the corned beef and cabbage. It looked like it was cooked to perfection but for some reason they use some sort of spice like allspice or nutmeg and it really killed the whole dish. I ordered a turkey club instead, which was very good. (They took the meal off of the bill). The fries are the thick coated super fried crispy kind and they were delicious. I've only been here for lunch. Never for happy hour or a meal in the evening. Let me just start off by saying the food is pretty darn good. And when I have tough days at work, I'll have a pint of Guinness with my lunch. The bartenders always pour Guinness correctly. So for food and drinks, I'll be happy to give a 5 star rating. The only issue I have with this location is the hostess. An older lady (in her 50s or 60s) who doesn't seem like she enjoys her position at the establishment. I usually go alone or with a coworker for lunch. When we have a lot of time to eat, we would like to be comfortable and ask for a table so we can lean onto a chair and rest our backs. For some reason, she always suggest we sit at the bar. As a paying customer, I believe I have the right to request to be seated where I feel most comfortable. There are days where I just want to slump back and relax while I eat. While other days, I want to be done eating in 15 minutes, so I grab a seat at the bar. Is that accommodation too much to ask for? It's one thing if the restaurant was extremely busy and real estate is hard to come by. But for the most part, when I take my lunch at 2pm, the restaurant is at 20% capacity on a good day. Aside from the older hostess, everyone is a pleasure to work with. The waitstaff is very nice and friendly. Overall, I would say 3.5 stars. If I were treated differently at the door, I would say this is a solid 4.5 star establishment. read more

I love this place! Being of Irish decent, it's hard to find local places that have dishes that do justice to Irish food. Their Guinness Beef Stew, and the Shepherd's Pie are my favorites. Both are full of tender, flavorful beef, and the mashed potatoes on top are melt in your mouth delicious! I wish my Irish grandmother was still alive so I could bring her here, she'd get a real kick out of the kitschy Irish decor. I love that you can get a nice size glass of house wine for $5, and the wine is good! Their homemade soups are always yummy, and the nachos, and the fish bites appetizers are both fantastic and great size for sharing with a group. I've always experienced good service in the dining room (I've never eaten in the bar). This is one of my favorite places to go, and I hope it will continue to be! read more

Big place, large bar area, lots of tables in the restaurant section, plus a private room of sorts - "the snuggery". Maybe a dozen beers on tap - nothing all that special - I went with a Yuengling. Stopped by for lunch with a friend from work. Our server was friendly and efficient. Food came out fast. I went with a Thatcher BLT which came with a second meat (either chicken, turkey, or roast beef) - I had chicken - the sandwich was more than I could eat and nice enough. My friend wanted a combination of corned beef and pastrami - not on the menu - but our server was happy to oblige - apparently a lot of people ask for it. Decent sweet potato fries. Very nice warm German potato salad. Nice place, worth a try. I want to go back for more of the menu. read more

Thatcher's is the kind of place you go to when you just want a nice wholesome meal, a good pint of beer, and a fun yet relaxed environment. I've eaten there many times and have never been disappointed. Their sliders are just perfect. The chicken curry is great. Their salads are amazing -- especially the one with the fried goat cheese. The atmosphere is so cozy with the fireplace and that little room in the back where you can escape with a few friends. And I love how the space is split into the dining area and bar area. Many taps, but little to offer as far as craft beers go. The beer selection was a huge disappointment. The Bangers and Mash were actually pretty good. The wings on the other hand were a huge disappointment, overcooked with a sauce that was no better than supermarket wing sauce. I was especially disappointed by the buffalo chicken wrap. I've had some very good ones in other pubs, but here it was limp chicken served with a scant wing sauce. The best buffalo wraps have crispy, tender chicken and a generous helping of blue cheese and, but the latter is either not a part of the buffalo wrap here, or the cook forgot it. We were seated at the bar, where you'd think service might be a bit quicker, but it was a long time between visits from the bartender. He seemed more interested in chatting with some attractive women at the other end of the bar than serving anyone else. We sat there close to 10 minutes before his first visit to take our drink order. He gave us a menu, but it was another 10 minutes before he came by to take our order Our glasses sat empty for way too long and when it was time to check out I had to walk to the other side of the bar to get his attention. read more

A group of us came here on a Friday night with intentions of sitting in the bar area to have a drink and get some appetizers. Since there were 7 of us we realized we would be more comfortable in the dining area- no biggie (or so you would think). When I went to the hostess stand to seat us, she was so adamant that our entire party had to be there before she could seat any of us and those are the "very strict rules her boss has her follow". I felt like I was being reprimanded. It would be one thing if the place was packed but the dining room was completely empty! One of our friends wasn't going to be there for another 15 minutes or so and she said she couldn't promise there would be room for her when she got there and that we would have to give up our extra chair- so bizarre. We probably would have taken our business elsewhere because of this but we had somewhere to be so we decided to stay. Our server was very nice and the food was good so our experience did get better once we were seated but I can see them losing business from their strict seating rules. Being somewhat pressed for time, they had not yet secured a place to live and spent one month residing with the young woman's parents in an active older adult community in Wanaque, NJ. Although playing Mahjong at the clubhouse was exhilirating, Irma and Myrna were getting a little too competitive for my taste, and Esther was hiding tiles up her blouse. In other words, we were pressed for entertainment and at each other's throats. Enter Thatcher McGhee's. I think the bf and I went there at least twice a week during our tenure in Wanaque. They have a nice selection of beers on tap, yummy bar food, extremely friendly and efficient servers, what more does an Irish Pub need? Oh and we were once lucky enough to get seated in the cottage, which literally felt like I was having dinner in someone's Irish Grannie's house. Average pub with decent prices on drinks. It's usually very busy with the 25-35 age group especially on Thursday night onward into Saturday. I think it being very close to a gym has something to do with it. The food here is decent but nothing to write home about. Generally everything has a lot of grease... so I wouldn't eat too much of it. Live bands/singers come here every now and then which makes for a more pleasant experience. Realistically this place is 3.5/5. Without music this place is a 3, and with I guess you could bump it up to a 4, depending on whom is playing for the night. I wouldn't say no if someone offered to buy me a drink here. read more

Sometimes you like a place because the drinks are great and the food is good and sometimes you only like a place because every time you show up your friends are there or a band you know is playing (shout-out to The Coffin Ships!). Thatcher McGhees was fabulous! Their food was simply amazing. I'm a regular here and I swear, the food gets better each time! You need to try the fries there! Talk about mouthwatering! One thing I really want to talk about was this bartender whose name was Christine. She was EXCEPTIONAL!!!! She was on point with everything and wasted no time. She knew all the regulars and the first time we went there, learned our names too! Wow, what a professional! There is no doubt in my mind that she was one of the best bartenders I've ever met. I stopped here for lunch with my husband while passing through on a trip. We were seated right away in the dining room. It was lunch time, but the dining room only had two other tables occupied. Our waitress seemed annoyed that my husband wanted to think about his beer choice. She didn't come back for a few minutes and we hadn't even placed drink orders yet. I ordered the fish and chips platter, which was very good. The tartar sauce was delicious and the fish was fresh and juicy. My husband got the grilled chicken sandwich, which he enjoyed a lot as well. The main reason for the lack of stars was the waitress. She never came back to ask if we needed anything. When it was time to get the check, it took her so long to bring it that we asked the busboy. We had wanted to try different beers, but we were never asked (even with our glasses empty). read more

This place has some fantastic irish fare given it's title. We were pleasantly surprised on our first trip and eagerly returned for a second. The sign in the front is true though, come early or late before 6 or after 8 to avoid the wait. We waited over an hour on our second trip. For me, it was worth the wait enjoying a few pints in the bar. We recommend the shepherd's pie and the chicken pot pie. read more

To be honest, my friends and I come here more for the bar than the food. The pub food is ok, not great. Stick with the wings (the best of the bunch) or a burger or caesar salad. I have heard that the dinner menu (especially the irish inspired meals) are quite good. I would love it if they added some healthier options to the app menu. The quality of some of the ingredients could use a little improvement as well. Start using fresh food - we'll pass on the canned jalapenos, pears, and mushrooms. I will say that I am a little disappointed that they got rid of Harp on tap. How can an irish pub not serve Harp??? (And no thanks, I don't want a Guiness instead.) Also, be warned that it gets crazy crowded after ten, and it will get super loud. So if you are looking to converse with friends, you may want to opt out. Thatchers is a good local place for both food and late-night drinks. Their appetizers are always great and my favorite is their Rachel sandwich (a Reuben with pastrami). Famous for their Thatch fries covered in cheese, bacon and ranch dressing--not for the faint of heart. It can get quite loud inside and despite the NJ transit bus stop right outside the outdoor seating, we like to sit out there on nice nights. Weekend nights can get really crowded and LOUD in the bar area, but the bartenders are always fantastic, they work hard to take care of you. Thatcher's is a great staple for anyone living in the Pompton Lakes area. I give Thatcher's four stars because I can be sure that I will get a good meal without a long wait. I've certainly had better Irish/American fare than at Thatcher's.
