The 1899 Inn is a beautiful historic building in the heart of La Veta. It was full of charm and antique furniture to look at. The rooms were clean and well maintained. The location was perfect for walking to a restaurant or the wine bar in town. The owner made fabulous breakfasts and was up early to make sure the coffee was ready. She was delightful and sweet. She did her best to make sure we were cared for, comfortable, and well fed to begin the day. Our private bathroom had a soaking tub rather than a shower. We had to use the general bathroom if we wanted a shower. (I was ok with that.) La Veta is a very small town at the base of the Spanish Peaks in southern Colorado. The townsfolk were very friendly and welcoming to visitors. I would go back in a heartbeat. read more

This B&B created in a historic home/hospital is very charming. I especially like the sunroom which was skillfully added some years ago and now functions as the breakfast room. This place has many positive points, my favorite of which is the wonderful coffee and breakfast cooked and served by our host. I would be remiss though, if I didn't point out a couple of negatives as a "just so you know". There is NO air conditioning so on hot days, even with the windows open and fans running at night, it is warm. We didn't perish but it didn't inspire snuggling. The second issue for me was the lack of a stand-up shower. There is a nice claw foot tub with a 3' rubber thing that you plug one end into the spigot and a shower spray comes out the other end. However considering its 3' length I had to kneel in the tub to rinse my hair and do my bathing. No, I am not a bath person. For my $105 I wish they'd install a stand up shower fixture and an oblong ring at the top from which to hang a shower curtain. Our beds were very comfortable and the overall ambiance is pleasant. We enjoyed the teeny tiny town of La Veta; it is worth getting off the beaten path to visit. read more

What a pleasant surprise! We had done some research trying to find some place to stay in this small town and the choices were slim at best. We stumbled upon this lovely B&B and can't wait to have a reason to come back. The hosts, Quincy and Jay were welcoming, friendly and helpful. Everything was clean and lovely and Charming. As a chef myself, I must say breakfast was fantastic. I even asked for the recipe, which I very rarely do. I cannot wait to have a reason to come back and we will for sure tell all of our friends. read more

The 1899 Inn has been in the National Register of Historic Places for over twenty years and is one of La Veta's original quarried sandstone structures. We stay here when our cabin is rented. Very clean, yummy breakfast friendly people. We love the Apishipa room! Walking distance to everything in town. read more

We were disappointed with our stay here. We stayed here at the end of October. The innkeepers were admittedly tired at the end of a long season and it showed. In fact it was one of the first things said to us on our arrival. She mentioned that the two other parties staying this weekend had cancelled and I definitely got the feeling that she had hoped we would also cancel. The innkeepers called to ask for our anticipated arrival time several times the day before and day of our arrival. They always stated that they weren't trying to rush us but they really needed to know when we'd arrive. We planned on driving up from Santa Fe and visiting the Great Sand Dunes before arriving in La Veta and estimated our arrival after 4 pm at the earliest. When our plans changed due to rainy weather at the dunes, we called at 3:30 pm to tell them we'd arrive between ~7-8 pm. Each time we called, we had to leave a message because no one ever answered the phone. When we did arrive at 8 on the dot, no one was at the inn and the lights were off. My husband knocked, peered in the windows, knocked, waited, and finally called the innkeepers to find out what was up. One of the innkeepers finally drove up just as a cop was about to ask us what we were doing. We booked a room in the main house with a queen bed but were put in the cottage instead. When my husband first booked our room, they tried to encourage him to book the cottage because it was bigger and would have more room for our boys (twins who share a single pack'n'play travel crib). He told them that he didn't want the larger room and that we didn't need the extra space or larger bed, that we preferred the queen bed. Although the cottage was bigger and easier/faster to heat (hence why they moved us there), it didn't have the same charm of the main house rooms--one of the reasons we booked one of then. The cottage also has a "king" bed, which is two twin beds put together. I don't really consider that the same thing because the frame of the twin mattresses creates a hump in the middle of the bed. As the innkeeper was showing us around, she mentioned that she wouldn't be able to make breakfast for us because she had to take a friend to the airport. She offered us a $15 voucher to the bakery just down the street instead. Unfortunately, one of the reasons we like to stay at B&Bs is for the convenience and the general heartiness of the breakfasts. I certainly need good protein to start my day and generally can't find decently balanced (and not Denny's or McDonald's) breakfasts on the road. It also takes exponentially longer to pack up the car and get breakfast on the road (especially with two babinos) than to eat breakfast before heading out. I'm not sure where the other innkeepers were, in fact I didn't realize there were others before reading the other reviews, but it seemed to be a one-person show the night we were there. In general, I was terribly disappointed with this place based on the service we received. Our stated preference for room and bed size and our multiple messages regarding our arrival time seemed to have not been regarded and the lack of breakfast was seriously inconvenient. I don't think it was worth the detour off the main route as we really didn't get anything more than we would have gotten at a motel on the highway. read more

This is probably the third time we've stayed at the 1899 Inn in La Veta, on the way from Denver to Taos. It's one of our favorite places, very historic, very comfy. Jill is a charming hostess. She serves a terrific, home made breakfast in the Inn's dining room, surrounded by windows with ledges for potted plants. It's quiet, and you can sleep with the windows open. It's also right down the street from Alys' Restaurant, a lovely, historic restaurant with great food and interesting art. This is a destination! read more

We stayed 2 nights over the 4th of July weekend in 2 upstairs rooms. The rooms were very comfortable - nicely decorated with charming antique furniture and beautiful art. The house is in the perfect location, walkable to EVERYWHERE, quiet, and great views of the mountains. Our hosts were FANTASTIC! Breakfast both mornings was to die for! We would highly recommend staying at the Inn while visiting La Veta. A tip for future travelers: When booking, make sure you're aware which room you'll be in as not all rooms have private baths. Only one upstairs room has a private shower, the other has a private bathroom with tub. Overall a perfect, quaint B&B in a delightful old Colorado town! The B&B your grandmother would have opened. The rooms are charming, the beds soft, the furniture antique but definitely functional. Large closet, comfy chairs, the only clue that the place is modern is the wifi. We were the only people there, and Jill made us a wonderful breakfast, she asked us the night before if we wanted a sweet or savory breakfast, and the german pancake was filled with fresh fruit from the farmers market, local cantelope. It was like having a gourmet chef devoted to just the two of us. It is only open for the season, I think March-October. read more

What a find this B&B is! We extended a third night to relish the comfy beds, eclectic decor and furnishings (like in Grandmas house!) and superb breakfasts in the sunny common room addition. Barb and Jill made us feel so welcome, too. The Apishipa room was perfect for us (retired couple) with the bath just down the hall. Everything was a fun walk away, from the Ryus bakery (dont miss the croissants), the funky used book store which helps fund the deservedly outstanding town library, and the truly fascinating Francisco Fort. We will be back in La Veta for the petanque festival July 13 at the Pinon Hill Art Gallery! A tres bientot! read more

We stayed here after camping for several days in the San Juan's and it was a great stop. Cute place with good hospitality right in town. We left very early to climb the Spanish peaks and missed breakfast, but the inn keeper left some freshly baked muffins for us to take on our hike. They were delicious and quite a thoughtful touch. read more

This is simply a great place to stay. Especially if you are one to appreciate details like fresh cut flowers and gourmet (and organic) breakfasts. I've stayed at a lot of places that weren't nearly this nice but were more expensive. The women who run the Inn are friendly and helpful but not the least bit intrusive. Some rooms have their own bath; others share. Nice common areas. And La Veta itself is a page out of time I think. Very Norman Rockwall and provides a definite breathe of fresh air both literally and figuratively. Really nice. read more
