Bravo! First time there when it was mobbed due to the nearby concerts and bike races and they handled it masterfully! This charming gem hires customer friendly staff, adorably outfitted, who know their products! Everything was delicious and well priced for the quality. Our favorite was the savory scone as a welcomed surprise but you just can't go wrong here! A few outdoor table allowed for pets outside complete with a jar of dog cookies so they too felt welcomed. I wish I lived closer, my husband and I drive 30 minutes almost every Saturday's for their amazing scones. Every week the scones menu changes. Places like this are my favorite style of bakery. Small, local feel with extraordinary flavors. I popped by to get a drip coffee and gluten free oatmeal raisin scone. I'm so used to drinking Starbucks and Dunkin that this coffee was a slap in the face, but like a good slap in the face as in "why are you drinking those coffees when you can be drinking quality coffees?". Totally different flavor- very strong and robust. I loved it! And the gf scone!!! It didn't even taste gf! I love when that happens. This place is doing something RIGHT. read more

Nice place next to commuter parking. I went there after stopping by post office on same street. I saw many people going in and out, so I decided to stop by, Its a small cozy bakery. It was nice sunny Monday afternoon. I ordered cold brew coffee, added some cream. And server recommended blue berry coffee cake, It was freshly baked and delicious cake. It came out to little over $5, price was good (reasonable). It made my day little happier :). I would definitely stop again to get coffee and deserts. As a part-time NJ resident last year due to COVID, I explored every coffee shop and bakery in the Maplewood area and always come back to the Able Baker. Their breads are delicious but it's the cookies that really shine, especially the homemade oreo-like ones. I ordered delivery from them as well, to surprise my sister, and the process was clear and easy, and they delivered on time. It can be hard for a small shop to pull off that kind of operation, but a great option to have when you want to send something sweet to a local friend! read more

Ok peeps. This is THE bakery. Vibe is village bakery. It's a perfect fit for Maplewood. I love the frames on the wall, random assortment of tables, and cafe tables outside. Always an amazing assortment of baked goods behind the glass, and pre packaged pies, cookies, etc displayed on a table. Pros: - I have yet to have a bad pastry, cupcake, scone or cookie. - Chocolate chip scones- the residents of Maplewood have seen me sprinting from my apartment to the Able Baker, trying to squeeze in a quick scone before I catch the train. It's soft but also crunchy and buttery. I think one day it had a bit of shimmery sugar on top. I think of it often. - Large selections of teas and as I call "fancy" coffees. (I'm not a coffee drinker but my coffee friends like it) Theres always some unique tea blends that I enjoy, as well as the classics Customer service is solid. They get busy so don't always expect like a glowing hug by the staff, but they're always friendly. Sometimes the tables are full, so temper your expectations. Con: - None. This is an excellent bakery with a great super friendly staff and amazing treats. The coffee is out of this world. I always walk out with at least a brownie, three cupcakes. And a slice of banana nut bread. The blueberry coffee cake is always moist and fresh. They sell Colombe coffee and tea as well as Italian coffee makers. I've ordered coffee and cake from the bakery for years and it's been good, the staff have been friendly and the coffee is fairly good. However, the few times I have requested a birthday cake, the customer service has been terrible. Recently I was treated horribly when I tried to talk about the cake I wanted, the senior baker mocked me while standing a few feet away, she was mean and nasty. Their website states to 'come in and place your order' ... which is what I did, but apparently that is not what is required. She snarked that I didn't know the flavors or dimensions. She was down-right mean, I feel sorry for the staff that work under her, as she was mean to them also. I was so irate with her immature behavior that I left the store without competing my order. This behavior is not what our town stands for and will also mean that I will find another place for all future orders. read more

Was invited to a house party and was tasked with bringing a dessert. You don't know me but I don't cook...or bake! I moved to Maplewood two weeks ago and was at a loss as to where to get the dessert. Looked on Yelp and saw the great reviews for The Able Baker. I went early in the morning as it was a Saturday and I knew it would probably get busy. They had a ton of choices as to what to bring. I went with the flourless chocolate cake and a box of their assorted cookies. Wow, what a hit at the party! Both things were amazing and a crowd pleaser for both adults and kids. I wish I could give them 4.5 stars, because 4 is definitely too low. I've been enjoying baked goods from Able Baker for a few years now, and it's easily the best bakery in the area. All of their offerings are incredibly delicious, and I would be shocked to learn if crack wasn't an active ingredient in all of their baked goods. Who needs NJ Cannabis Legalization when you have this place sitting in your backyard? Now, you're probably asking yourself, why only 4 stars? Surely the Able Baker warrants 5 stars with such outstanding food! I wish you were correct, but there are a couple of problems that prevent the Able Baker from being the 5-star juggernaut that it should be: 1) The hours!! The business hours have never been good, and now they are plain horrific! 8AM-2PM is such a small window for customers to get their fixes in, especially for those not fortunate enough to be working from home. I'm aware that there is a labor shortage and many small businesses are struggling in this regard, but I just hope Able Baker has data that justifies this move. Could profit margins be improved by keeping their doors open later? I know personally I would buy more stuff (much to the chagrin of my wife) if they were open until 8 or 9PM. 2) The way they handle lines is horribly inefficient and makes even pick-up orders a royal pain. There is usually only one employee taking people's orders, and while these workers are friendly and helpful, the whole process is way too slow. It creates a bottleneck which results in long lines. Even customers with online pick-up orders have to wait in these lines because there is no other way of flagging down a staff member to fetch it for you. This process needs to be improved upon to make for a better customer experience. Be warned that this place is a tad expensive, but I don't really have a problem with it because the quality of the food is impeccable and I have no problem supporting this small business by paying their prices, plus tip! Besides, if it was cheaper, I'd probably go bankrupt and get evicted by blowing all of my net worth here, so there is a positive side to most things! All in all, just try anything and I mean ANYTHING from Able Baker. They are the best bakery I've been to and I'm sure you'll feel the same once you try it.
