The Alpine is a lively bar located in Toronto's Junction area, offering a cozy and rustic ambiance paired with an energetic vibe. My companion and I visited on a late Saturday evening and were seated right away. We tried the Steak Sandwich ($26), Honey Garlic Wings, and Tuna Ceviche ($16). While the steak sandwich was acceptable, the tuna ceviche felt a bit too watery, and the crostini was a little too hard for my preferences. The honey garlic wings, though decent, had a very mild honey garlic taste. Our server was friendly, and efficient. She checked in on us just the right number of times, making the service feel attentive but not overbearing. The Alpine isn't wheelchair accessible. The main entrance is narrow, and there are a few steps to go up before reaching the seating area. A fun note is that they offer karaoke every Friday night from 9 PM to 2 am. Overall, The Alpine offers a great atmosphere for a casual night out, but some of the dishes could use a little refinement. read more

Neither intimate bar nor proper restaurant an identity is still in the works hopefully, or more likely never to appear. Having visited 3 times I have the sense they are trying to be more downtown and culturally inclusive than the bleached Hipster poser haunts of this hood. Not sure it will ever fly. The food is whatever, service too chummy, drinks neither unique or of good value. Owners have spent a lot to update it from its divey Celts previous incarnation. And the basement music venue is not promoted nearly enough, nice room... Will not return, too many options nearby. Ciao. read more

I've been coming here for the past 4 years , ever since it first opened. The first month was a honeymoon: the food was incredible and the staff was eager to please. For a year after that and during Covid, it was the dark ages as the food fell off a cliff and the prices stayed high. But for the past year it has hit a nice, high plateau of consistency. Wiener Schnitzel, coleslaw, pretzels & cheese sauce, rib sandwich, gravy and fried chicken are some of the tasty staples of this solid kitchen. The decor is tasteful, if a little sports-bar (LOTS of screens), but I bring my family every few months and always leave happy. read more

The Alpine is one of the newer indie pubs on the Junction strip. A distant sister to Mugshots over on Bloor, Alpine has a comparatively decent amount of space, trading Mugshot's outdoor patio for an extra seating area downstairs. Again, compared to Mugshots, the Alpine has a bit of a brighter, more sparsely Nordic ambiance. This less pub-y vibe is reflected in the menu as well, where you'll see Calamari and Schnitzel instead of Mac 'n Cheese and 7 different burger varieties. We were there for brunch and had the Croque Madame and a Salmon Eggs Benny.  The C.M. sported the thickest bread I've ever seen on a breakfast dish, and was delicious.  The Hollandaise on the Benny was quite runny, but this didn't affect the excellent taste whatsoever. Best of all, it came with two Rostis (a sort of Swiss hashbrown) that I couldn't get enough of. It was nice to enjoy somewhere new in the Junction that wasn't just a little hole-in-the-wall. I was so looking forward to my grilled chicken beet salad. It was blah. The chicken was dry and had no flavour. The beets were over- cooked and tasteless. The dressing was not tasty enough. The staff was friendly enough and the food was ok, however the speed at which they took our plates away would have you thinking there was a lineup of people waiting for our table (there wasn't, it was a fairly quiet evening). Not exaggerating when I say I had the fork in my mouth when my plate was cleared away (with a few bites still left) - I could not object with a mouthful of food. 2 seconds after I swallowed that bite they came back for my fork. Great place to grab a couple beers and a bite or two. The mussels are a good size for their buck a shuck oyster special on Wednesdays. Was surprised to stop by at 8pm recently and to hear they were sold out. How does that happen so early? Really enjoy their pretzel with cheddar dip is real good, but definitely expect to get your hands wet picking up those slippery suckers! Their fish and chips are also worth an order. read more

As soon as we stepped inside, I was so impressed by the new renovations and decor at The Alpine. Although I never set foot inside when the location was Celts, I can only imagine the amount of work it took to overhaul this restaurant! We came in around 9:30pm on a Friday night. It happened to also be the night of a Leafs game, right before St. Paddy's day so the place was packed and four large screen TVs above the bar were blaring the game. We waited a few minutes for a table and as soon as we sat down, the game ended and was replaced by equally loud, conversation inhibiting music. We ordered the grilled calamari ($13) and the buffalo fried chicken sandwich ($16) to share, as well as a few pints of local beer (8.50). Food came relatively quickly - the chicken in the sandwich was perfectly battered, while the fries could have been left in the fryer a few minutes longer. Calamari was tasty but a small portion. Service was decent despite it being so busy so I was thankful for that. The Alpine is the perfect place to bro out over some comfort food, beer and televised sports. If I was planning a bachelor party today, I'd insist on starting here. read more

Once, for a truly amazing beermaster dinner with a custom menu featuring a Berkshire pig. Once, for live music and drinks. And once more for a birthday dinner with 10 friends. Lightning does strike twice... It's always a treat to stumble into a pleasurable new dining venue. It's even better when you return for a second visit to find the experience retains -- and even improves on its initial charms. For us, there are three must-have components to such an experience: great food, great drink, and great service. The Alpine surpasses on all three. On our first visit, my wife and I both had the Steak Frites which was no small matter: AAA 10oz. striploin, frites, peppercorn gravy and a beefsteak onion ring. A kitchen can sink or swim on the cook quality of a steak; it may seem simple but it's not. The chef hit it the bullseye, a perfect medium rare (towards the rare side, just as we asked). The portions were grand and the seasonings were spot on. The 'frites', which in some restaurants are a mere afterthought, were fresh cut and flavourful. For our second visit, my wife had The Alps Burger with smoked bacon, Raclette cheese, pickled zucchini, aioli, on a brioche bun, while I had the Buffalo Fried Chicken Sandwich with bacon, Cajun pickles, tarragon aioli, cheddar, iceberg lettuce, also served on a brioche bun. (It's worth noting that they use the much tastier chicken thigh rather than the more bland chicken breast.) Once again, the ingredients were fresh and well-seasoned and cooked with care and attention. The Alpine has a great selection of beer on tap and the friendly staff were happy to offer samples. Both times, I settled on the Clifford Brewing Porter which did not disappoint. There is even a menu of higher end beers which may require a special occasion to justify the price but they do sound intriguing. My only quibble might be the name, itself, as "The Alpine" really doesn't give a hint of the treasures within. But I get that there's history to the establishment and that lends the place just a little bit more character. As I mentioned before, great food and great drink is nothing without great service. Staff are genuinely friendly in an approachable, unpretentious way. Even the owner, Jeff, was nice enough to take the time to chat with us about the history and future of the restaurant, his outlook and objectives. His passion for good service and love of the industry is palpable and that translates into the excellent experience had by the patrons. We wish him and his whole team continued success as we will most certainly return for another strike of lightning. read more

A friend of mine posted that a new spot opened up in the neighbourhood called The Alpine, and of course - I was intrigued. Replacing what once was a sketchy bar, this gastropub is styled to mimic a cabin in the woods, with lots of private booths and hardwood. My partner and I decided to visit on a Saturday evening, and the restaurant was packed. A good sign for a brand new place. One thing we noticed as we immediately were seated was a closeness of each of the tables to one another. The beer was pretty decent, with lots of good local beers on tap including People's Pint and Little Beasts. I found the wine list a bit lacking, with lots being sold as bottles and not 5 or 6 oz pours. The menu is divided up into apps, sandwiches, and mains. For this visit, my partner decided to get their veggie burger ($16, falafel patty, pickled zucchini and onion with dill tahini sauce) and I went for the regular burger ($18, house-made burger, smoked bacon, Raclette cheese, pickled zucchini). Each came served with a side of fries, served with ketchup, oddly enough - not their garlic aioli which is advertised in the appetizers section. My partner was super underwhelmed with his vegetarian burger comparing it to a Yves burger he could make at home. Something about the consistency of the patty didn't hold up for him, but perhaps it was an off night. Meanwhile, my burger was out of this world: thick, juicy and cooked to perfection. Likely one of the better burgers I have had in a while. Because we decided to visit on a Saturday evening, the Toronto Maple Leafs game was playing and the volume was so incredibly loud. The volume on the television sets essentially caused people to scream at one another in order to communicate, which really put off my partner and I. By the end of our meal, we were both were ready to go. The service staff were super great, helpful and attentive. While we didn't love our visit this time around, we realize that the gastropub has been opened for less than a month. Still lots of things to work out. I really enjoyed my food and the menu shows a lot of promise for people with all types of dietary restrictions. We think we might come back for brunch to see what that is all about. read more

Unexpectedly delightful! We had a 6pm commitment in the area and stopped in for an early dinner. We had never been here, and were trying it on the recommendation of a friend (who doesn't always get these restaurant recommendations right - so we were not incredibly hopeful.) We arrived at 5pm on a Saturday night and found the place quite busy. The atmosphere is clean and bright. There were only three big tv screens, each one running a different sports event, but not positioned so as to dominate completely. The music is 1960's retro. They have a variety of seating types. A few booths, some high tables and chairs, some regular tables and chairs and a well stocked bar. Seeing how busy it was, even as early as we were, I think we might make a reservation next time The menu, though not incredibly big, has plenty of choice with all the basics, is kid friendly and includes a few surprises. Daily soup, Burgers including a veggie burger, Welch Rarebit, Steak, chicken, Pasta, Sandwiches, Salads and here I have to stop. I chose the Buckwheat and Black Rice salad. This delightful dish included the grains as mentioned, chopped apple, beet, sweet potato, baby kale, chopped walnuts and the most amazing dressing. The portion was more than generous and I got to take half home for the next day. WOW! Best tasting salad I have ever had anywhere. My partner chose the Alpine Burger and was very happy with it. He wanted to try the Frites but with waistline in mind, opted for the side salad instead. The service was polite and attentive. We will definitely return there, and next time, maybe we can try their weekend brunch menu. read more

Just went in for brunch and had a good time! The service was a little disorganized but overall a positive experience. As a vegetarian I was excited to see both veggie bacon and tofu scramble on the menu. I ordered the classic breakfast with veggie bacon and we had pancakes for the table. I was really disappointed and kind of confused about the veggie bacon because it's clearly made in-house but there was zero flavour or colour to it. With so many great pre-packaged options available this seems like a huge miss and an easy fix. The potatoes are served hash brown-style in small patties which is awesome but unfortunately ours tasted like they had been sitting under a lamp for a little too long. Pancakes were some of the best (if not the best) I've ever had though - whoo boy. Still thinking about them! I think this place has a ton of potential, just needs a little tightening up on the execution. Will definitely come back for a second visit. read more

A great new addition to the neighborhood. Alpine has a concise menu, which is really nice to see since I'm sure that means everything is made to a high standard. I had the pork schnitzel and it was very good. The prices seem to vary between 16-25 for dinner entrees. They have an extensive beer list and a nicely stocked bar. It was OK. I maybe should have checked reviews online before ordering because the meal I got was very, very disappointing. If I knew more about the menu and checked what other people had liked it would have been better. As it stands, I got the salad and it was the only time I EVER sent a salad back. It tasted like something I would throw together to bring to work in a hurry -- a bunch of greens, HUGE hastily chopped beets, and under-cooked rice. Completely flavorless. Partway through I felt like I was just force-feeding myself so I set it aside. My friend and I also got pretzels, which were also just OK. It was SUPER painful to pay such a huge bill for mediocre and downright flavourless food. The beer is good of course, but Indie Ale House is right next door and has a much better menu. My friends and I had high hopes for this restaurant. Unfortunately the best part of it ended up being the decor. We had a group of 5 so we made called ahead and made a reservation. When we got there we were seated pretty quickly and give menus and cutlery. The place was consistently packed and had a line up at the door the whole time, most likely because they too had heard the hype. Our waitress was clearly overwhelmed and wasn't used to dealing with that many people. She started off by telling us all the stuff they are out of, including the one drink i wanted, the cider. My boyfriend asked what kind of cocktails they had and she said just the ones on the list. I stated i didn't like any of those and she just stared and blinked at me. My boyfriend suggested they make something simple like vodka with pineapple juice. She said she didn't know what kind of juice they had but she will check. She took everyone's food and drink orders and returned some time later with the drinks. Everyone else enjoyed their beers, i took a small sip of the drink and immediately pushed it away. I don't know what it was but it didn't remotely taste like vodka or pineapple juice. My boyfriend also tried it and agreed it didn't taste right. We let the waitress know the drink tasted odd when she brought our food. When she came to the table she never asked how our drinks were, but my boyfriend let her know i didn't like my drink. She just blinked at us and was quiet. My boyfriend had to ask if there was something she could add to fix it, more juice for example. She said ya we can try that and got my drink from the table. Why it was up to my boyfriend to ask and suggest those things is beyond me. If your a waitress you would think you would check if your customers are enjoying themselves no? I ordered the fish and chips and was severely disappointed. It was a good size and you get a lot of fries which made it worth the price point if only they cooked the fish. It was fried but undercooked inside, probably due to its size. It was dry and completely lacked flavour. I ended up asking for mayo which of course they didn't have. She did bring a extremely garlicky aioli but even that didn't help the fish. The consistency of the fish tastes like dry glue in your mouth, absolutely disgusting. When the waitress finally came back with my drink it was fixed to the point of being drinkable but the meal was pretty much done at that point. The guy that comes and clears the table eventually cleared out plates but never asked how the food was, he didn't question why my plate was still full. We had a hell of a time trying to flag down our waitress to get our bills. She never asked us how the meals were, apologized for the delays due to them being busy or even say thank you. 2/5 of the people in our party were disappointed with the food, all of us agreed that for that price point we expected better service. I ended up getting severe stomach pains and not feeling well after dinner most likely due to the under cooked fish. Not sure which was worse the food or the crappy service. read more

Decided to come here after wanting to try a new pub in the area rather than the same ones all the time. The atmosphere is really nice and there's a relaxed sort of feel, not as loud as regular pubs. We ordered drinks, and the waiter offered samplers which was nice, before actually ordering the beer. We tried 2 types of beer, both of which were good. We also order apps, frites, grilled calamari and pretzel. These were plenty enough for sharing and a good size. They also have a downstairs with a pool table, which is nice. The staff were friendly, the beer selection was great, the fried chicken was moist, and the TVs were blastin'! They have two floors so even more space than it appears, and their menu is filled with both conventional pub fare and some more unusual but still comfort food-y sounding choices. I was not familiar with The Alpine and ordered because I was looking for something other than the usual pizza, pastas etc. Firstly, the food was delicious; the pork schnitzel was fresh and crispy, as were the alpine frites. The portions of both were VERY generous. The chicken sandwich also fantastic and I'd definitely order it again. Also picked up the soft pretzels and they were perfect with beer (and Prosecco!) When I couldn't find another reservation in the Junction, I called The Alpine and was able to secure a reservation for 4. The person I spoke to was very accommodating and helpful. My friends and I arrived on time and were greeted by our very friendly and engaging server, the awesome Freddie. After starting with drinks, we ordered the food and it was so delicious. I had the brisket sandwich with a green salad - it was fresh and hearty and I took my time finishing it because it was so good! My friends had the fried chicken and pirogies and they were definitely happy with their orders. It was my friend's birthday and she ordered a second drink in lieu of a dessert, and our server even comped her with a 9oz glass although she ordered a 6 oz. After we left, Freddie even ran down the street to return a bandana left by my other friend! Overall, the food, drinks and service are the best I have experienced in the Junction.
