I lived in this hotel for 4 months, beginning just after 9/11. I enjoyed my time there and the staff, especially the lady manager and Oscar, were friendly and helpful to someone living and working far from home and family. Back then, the small rooms were done out in European "pension" style, and were cosy and comfy. Since the refurbishment, the rooms are just like any other modern hotel and are adequate, but no longer have that cosy, comfy feel. Nice lobby, decent (Italian) restaurant on-site (room service available) and handy for Union Square if you turn left on exiting. Valet parking only. Be careful if you turn right on exiting, because a block or two over, labeled "lower knob hill" on the map, is the tenderloin, a dangerous, drug-fueled area. All in all, a nice little hotel with a lot of history (some of it unsavory), but the rooms are not nearly as nice as they used to be. read more

We had a pleasant experience at this hotel. We stayed on night a few days before Christmas. The hotel was clean and fresh, and seemed like it had recently been redone. The paint on the outside of the hotel compared to the buildings next to it definitely seemed newer. The rooms were clean, but small and a bit dated. Our room had no windows facing the outside, but I realized that the bathroom mirror was actually a window and when I opened it, it opened to a dirty part of the roof with no screen, which was odd. You can tell this hotel used to be something else and was converted into hotel, it definitely has European vibes. The room wasn't large, but we were only staying one night and it was clean and appropriate for what we needed it for, especially for the price we paid. One thing to note is that there wasn't a switch to control the ceiling fan, but the ceilings were sort of high, so to access the ceiling fan, they had just a super long ceiling fan cord, which meant that I bumped my head into the ceiling fan cord multiple times. The hotel does offer valet parking for $58 per night, but there are not in and out privileges, and you cannot access your car at all once they have taken it until you are actually leaving. I honestly have no idea where they took my car while I was there, but it was returned safely. This hotel is also right on a busy street in San Francisco, and so there wasn't a very good place to put our car while we were waiting for the valet, so our car was parked in a red zone with the hazards on for what seemed like at least 20 minutes until the valet actually moved it to wherever they took it. The lobby had coffee, tea and water available at all times. We didn't get to try the breakfast, but they do have a complementary breakfast. The only hot water for the tea comes from the coffee machine though, so it tasted like coffee grounds. The people at the front desk were nice enough, but not particularly friendly or helpful. They did however let us store our bags after checkout and we were able to leave our car with the valet a little bit past checkout as well. Also, they don't have a bathroom in the lobby. When I asked to use the restroom after we had checked out, they said I could go to the hotel next-door. I was able to use the bathroom in that hotel, but the hotel next-door is very rundown and the bathroom was not very clean , so it was a bummer to have to use that one. I contacted Scabies from the carpet in my room!!!! This is a cool old hotel in downtown San Francisco. The key word here is is old. The bed is old. The carpet is old. The shower is old. The ceiling fan is old. It is ALL old. With that there comes other issues. The carpet does not get cleaned frequently enough as is apparent when you walk into the room. The dirty carpet caused me to contract scabies which is a body lice that burrows into your skin from room 407. You can tell that it's from the dirty carpet based on where it's at on my legs. I sleep like a flamingo with on leg tucked up to this portion of my thigh which is the obvious point of contact. I have tried to contact the hotel to no answer Or reply. I am leaving this review as a warning to other possible tenants that there is a risk. I stayed here for a work trip and at this point would have rather missed the income and stayed home. Aside from the awesome new friends in my skin (sarcasm) the room has no a/c which is fine but the ceiling fan also squeaks so you can't sleep when it's on. The only option is to open the window which just allows the city noises in which makes sleep difficult as well. I don't advise this place simply because it's not clean. Bringing scabies home to my family definitely sucks. read more

It started off shady. the front desk person upgraded our room only after we gave him $25 CASH. The bathroom/shower was terribly small. I am 6'1 240lbs and my girlfriend is 5'7 200lbs we struggled to take a shower in the barely 30-inch square shower with the loose shower head. The pedestal sink with no vanity was terribly close to the toilet. We had to sit sideways while on the toilet. Apparently, the windows are original to the building. There were very drafty, and wind was coming thru the windows at night. I was there in the winter but if you visit in the summer be careful. There is no AC unit in the room. There was no way to control the environment. There was one steam radiator that we couldn't control. We had to open the window to cool off the room. There was no dresser for the room, we stored our clothes on the two chairs or hung them in the closet area. I notice other people writing reviews from the same time period was quoted a lot cheaper parking rate than me. The parking is valet and not in and out. The garage opens at 8 am, I forgot the closing time. Overall comfortable other than the bathroom, the bed was nice the lighting was nice. There was a safe and refrigerator. The unhoused people were noisy but that comes with the territory. The continental breakfast was average. read more

The Andrew Hotel is located in their own classic San Francisco building. Their elegant ambience is clean and well cared for. Their excellent Italian ristorante and bar, Fino, located adjacent to the lobby, serves truly scrumptious dishes. The hotel's staff and manager were exceedingly helpful and professional. Andrew's Hotel is very old-fashioned, clean, and quite small. I enjoyed the morning options like coffee, tea, cucumber water, bagels, yogurt, and donuts. The staff was friendly and helpful. The main downside is the lack of privacy -- there's no curtain for the bathroom window, so anyone outside can see your silhouette with the light on. You will also hear your neighbors through very thin walls. I wouldn't stay here again since there are better options in San Francisco. For your own sake, look for a different place. My room was number 608. The heat did not work the entire weekend. I'm not sure what happened, but it was not a part of the intervals. I did survive with a light cold but all in all the Hotel is as described. Please lower your American standards when visiting because they Explain very thoroughly in detail your expectations upon being there. So with the hotels expectation set in mind I had a wonderful time and a great day and I would stay again. They did leave a very nice binder on the desk with a lot of useful information in terms of how the heat works, central locations two things, how the channels work I found that binders to be very useful and I am very appreciative of it. read more

The bathroom was unusually tiny; I could not sit straight on the toilet without putting my legs in the bathtub. Walls are very thin felt like I had roommates. I could hear people in the other rooms at 2 am. Priceline said there was an airport shuttle to The Andrews Hotel but no it was not the case at all. I spent $60 round trip on two airport trips but the hotel only cost $100.00. There is no A/C and the elevator is very unique - older than the soldiers from the Civil War. I have to say that my stay at The Andrews Hotel made my return to San Francisco after 9 years soo enjoyable! The location is perfect'! Easy walk down to Union Square and Market Street. The area is safe and clean. Amin, the hotel manager is fantastic and very resourceful. He was able to get us out of an unexpected hotel booking bind and accommodated us. My husband, our three sons and I enjoyed the warm welcome we received by the hotel staff every evening after long days out on the town. The hotel rooms are small but cozy and very charming! My husband gave me the choice to stay at a modern hotel or a Victorian establishment such as The Andrews Hotel. We parked down the street in a parking structure (across from Tiffany & Co) I'm glad I chose The Andrews Hotel. I found it's old charms romantic. Be careful on the staircase. It's really easy to miscalculate your step. Our room felt like a small inner city apartment. It was quaint but lovely. Our room had enough amenities: Two closets, one walk-in Bathroom and a bonus vanity area with a sink in our bedroom Mini fridge with waters and sodas EO body care products (One of my fave brands) Continental breakfast delivered to each floor. If you want to eat dinner there's a restaurant on the premises called Fino. The food smells amazing and people from all over flock to the Hotel just to have a meal at Fino. Fino also hosts happy hour with complimentary wine for hotel guests. Friendly staff. I plan to make The Andrews Hotel my go-to lodging whenever I'm in San Francisco. read more

I arrived outrageously late because of travel delays. This can be inconvenient to a small hotel but a man was there to check me in some time after two o'clock in the morning. He told me everything I needed to know about the place. This hotel is not a convention destination; a plus in its favor from my POV. My room was pleasantly furnished and comfortable; it was of a size that might be called cozy. I found it completely satisfactory. Everything worked and everything was scrupulously clean. There are only a few rooms on each floor and my floor (I think it was 6th) was very quiet. One think I dislike about more modern hotels is the hermetically sealed environment, i.e. windows that are not "operational". I was pleased to be able to open my window a bit. The place looks like it has been maintained throughout its existence and not rescued from decay. Everthing is good, whether new or old. The company would put me up at the Saint Francis, also very fine; but now that I'm travelling at my personal expense, this is my new favorite. read more

The bathrooms were tiny, but the room was okay. If you do stay here, just stay in the room. If you decide to venture out, exit the building, don't turn right or left. Just walk straight into your Uber and get the fuck out of the area. This part of the town is rough. Three stars for the chapstick and wrapper I found in my room in plain sight that I spotted the second I stepped into our room. This city sucks. My spouse and I came to SF for an event and to sight see a bit. The staff at the andrews hotel were great, very friendly and easy going. The location is extremely close to the Union Square and multiple parking garages. Only downside would be the noises coming from tenderloin a few blocks down. However, the building locks on itself after a certain time and can only be unlocked with your room key so that prevents anybody coming into the lobby and making a disturbance. I think three stars is being a bit generous. It's really a shame because SF seems like a dump these days, and that's coming from someone who lives in another struggling city at the moment (NYC). I know that's not the hotel's fault, so let me start with the positives: Our room was clean and pretty cool. I like the boutique feel and it was a unique experience. The bathroom was tiny but the room was a pretty good size and the bed was comfortable and the room had plenty of light. I dig the old school elevator too. Negatives: Strictly with the hotel itself, the lack of AC means you have to open the windows. Being a resident of Manhattan, I'm used to noise and don't leave home without white noise machines, but I can see how this is a major issue for people because of the constant ambulances going by. I assume they're taking ODs to the hospital from Tenderloin at all hours of the day. In fact, I watched multiple people over a 48 hour period injecting and smoking god knows what, including a guy in the alleyway heating up a spoon. SF as a whole is just so depressing and this hotel is way too close to the bad part of town. I have never witnessed so much neglected mental illness walking around at all hours of the day, as well as very aggressive homeless people, again, coming from someone who lives in Manhattan, NYC feels like freaking Heaven. Decades of failed government policies can't fix this city. read more

My in-laws, fiancé and I spent one night at The Andrews while visiting San Francisco. We booked online using Hotels.com and reserved two king corner/end rooms. When we arrived, we decided to go with valet parking, which offered unlimited in and out privileges. We arrived a few hours before check-in, but were able to get into our rooms early. We requested a roll-away bed for one of the rooms, but were told neither room could accommodate a cot; the only way to fit a cot in a room would be to upgrade to a suite. Thankfully, we were upgraded at no cost to a suite (for one room) and they brought a cot up right away. My fiancé and I stayed in a corner/end King room on the 6th floor. The room was very small, but had everything we needed to stay overnight. The bed was very comfortable except for the odd plastic tags stuck to the inside of every pillow (like the security tags they put on clothing in a store). There was a complimentary continental breakfast in the hallway on our floor as well. The only real issue is the size of the bathrooms- there is barely room for one person to stand comfortably because it has no depth, and taking a shower was close to impossible. I am rather petite and short and even I couldn't move in the shower. The closet in the room was arguably bigger than the bathroom. Besides the bathroom, I really enjoyed my stay. The hotel is older, quaint and small, but had a lot of character. The restaurant connected to the hotel( Fino) looked incredible as well. Lastly, we were given a complimentary glass of wine at the restaurant's bar between 5-6pm - and they gave it to us even though we got back a bit after 6pm. Three stars is a little generous for what was a completely overpriced hotel we stayed only due to a booking mix-up for Mom's conference in late September. For starters, THERE IS NO AIR CONDITIONING. Let me say that again, for those disinclined to believe that a hotel that cost $287 a night could be like a g****** sauna. Now the desk people said, "It's never this hot." Yes--except for when it is. And lest you buy that nonsense line San Franciscans (and Santa Barbarans) try to feed you: San Francisco is NOT dry heat. No, it's not NOLA or Houston or DC. But it is in no sense dry. Dry heat is Scottsdale or Palm Springs. The desk woman told me, "It's only the last five years San Francisco has had days this hot." So which is it? It's "never" this hot in San Francisco, or it didn't use to be this hot before that Chinese hoax called "global warming" and sometimes this hot? To my mind, five years is ample time to get to Home Depot or Loews and pick up floor fans that actually cool the room. And there is no Home Depot in SF proper. Manhattan has two: Flatiron and Midtown East. The ceiling fan in the bedroom is sort of okay as long as you leave the windows wide open. The problem with that: you get to listen to deranged and or drunk homeless people screaming obscenities in the middle of the night. The ceiling fan in the living room utterly useless. And five or six blocks is like five miles in San Francisco. The block the Andrews is located is not so far from the Westin St. Francis but the homeless are far more concentrated by the Andrews. And these are aggressive homeless people (one put a fist in my face, and the faces of all others on the Walgreens corner a couple blocks away). Now, assuming the weather is decent, the hotel is still only okay. It's one of the oldest hotels in SF and if you want to go with pre-SF earthquake charm, then you should go to Sutter and Gough to the Hotel Majestic. My ex and I stayed there twice on the recommendation of a right wing Death Row dentist at San Quentin I used to know and I will absolutely try to stay there again my next trip to SF. We got a suite once and it was just magical. The pro's of the Andrews: it's convenient to Union Square; the ceilings are very high; the bathrooms are renovated; the bed is very comfortable (other than the air temperature). I will of course never stay here again. It was only due to Mom's error in booking that we ended up here on a crowded week everything else was booked. Friends in SF tell me that Sept and Oct is "high season" for conferences, which is why everything was double to triple the price of July. The Hotel Intercontinental (Howard Street, by Moscone) is my favorite place to stay because of the hotel gym and glorious pool. Were I still an Equinox member, the gym and pool wouldn't be an issue. I practically wept upon learning that the NAFUSA conference rate was only 325 dollars. OMG, we paid 287 for the Andrews nightmare when we could have been comfortable and cool at the St Francis. read more

Nice mid-range hotel; seems a bit like something out of a 1930s movie. It has that 1930s elevator and room size. The place is clean, nothing fancy. Rooms are a little smaller than at a "name brand" hotel - yet big enough. The staff was pleasant and helpful for the area. Location is good (although you don't want to travel too far west of here) - easily accessible to many attractions. One gets 2 perks: - If you get there before 6:00, you get a free glass of wine downstairs - You get a light continental breakfast of bananas, muffins, pastries, orange juice, and tea My recommendation; try and get a room higher up or not facing the street. I was on the 2nd floor facing the street - and at 5 AM the trucks started rolling through and woke me up (I did fall back asleep). read more

OK, so I made a mistake. I tried to go all "hipster" and stay at an AirBNB....usually not too bad, but I found the one butthead in the city and got burned. So on our last night, we said sayonara to the lame room and hit up hotelstonight.com to find something last minute. That can often be risky with boutique hotels, but it couldn't get much worse, so I rolled the dice. When we arrived, it was after 7pm, so we missed the free glass of wine, and the nice gentleman at the front desk shared our disappointment but made up for it in friendliness. We were quickly checked in and oriented and even escorted in the vintage elevator to our 4th floor room. The space had an eclectic charm-from the quaint bed and nightstands to the educational posters on the walls that taught us all about California wildflowers. The shower was nice-good water pressure, and the soap was theft-worthy. Ahem. We were serenaded by a domestic tirade in the middle of the night on the street-but that's a risk you take staying where we were. But I did not feel unsafe or overly uncomfortable. After a few minutes, I think the guy tired of his rampage and moved on. Breakfast was conveniently located right outside our bedroom door. No shoes even required. In the morning, the front desk staff were happy to hold our bags while we touristed. We were oh-so-grateful, as were they when we handed over a crisp Hamilton (don't be a jerk-always tip). We may not have intended to end up here, but we are glad we did. Can't wait to return! read more

I enjoyed my stay here very much. I am in a lower tiered hotel in SF about 3 times a year and I would stay here every time now that I have found it, if I can get the same deal I got this time (from Hotels.com). I booked about a month in advance and got such a good rate that I booked a suite (knowing how small SF rooms can be - it was a steal). When I arrived - a few minutes after 6pm - I was told that the complimentary wine had finished at 6pm, but the lovely barmaid in the restaurant gave me a glass anyway that I could take up to my room. She must have seen on my face the kind of day I'd had! The lady who checked me in was lovely and I was on my way up to the 7th floor in no time. I was pleasantly surprised that the suite was actually 2 rooms (I couldn't really tell from the pics). There is a TV in each room and a mini fridge in the living room along with a work desk and 2 leatherette tub chairs (no sofa). The bathroom is off the living room and there is also a washbasin in the bedroom. There was a large closet in both rooms also. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and I slept like a rock! There is no coffee maker in the room which is typical in these small hotels, but still something I miss. The breakfast appeared silently in the corridor at 7am (I had been up for ages and was actually listening for it). I had read in the information that if they are not full they only do breakfast on alternate floors and I was ready to hike down to the 6th floor, but there it was! It was simple but lovely coffee and enough food to keep you going. The restaurant downstairs is fabulous. Business traveler tip: sit at the bar. All the biz travelers on their own were at the bar and we all had a great conversation. read more

We haven't had the pleasure of staying at the Andrews Hotel but stayed at the next door Fitzgerald Hotel on our recent stay. However, when we did stay in San Francisco, our car was broken into and things were taken from the car. This situation was upsetting when we got to the Fitzgerald and wanted to see what we were missing. David, staff at the Andrews, saw us in the parking area out front and came to speak with us. After explaining the situation, he was very understanding with parking there. He went above and beyond and found us a mini shop vac to help get the glass out of the car and even helped us remove the glass from the mats into a trash can. When we went to Fino the next night, he checked in on us and wanted to make sure our stay was improving. David is an excellent staff member at the Andrews and really made sure that we felt welcome, and we weren't even guests there. read more

This place is small and quaint. Exactly what I was aiming for! They have an awesome historic elevator! The staff is very nice and informative. We had SO many questions about the public transport and how to get to all the tourist places. They dealt with our questions efficiently and didn't get annoyed (I would have gotten annoyed if the roles were reversed) We felt safe as well! The rooms are small, but who goes to SF to stay in the room? You go out and explore. You simply need a place to lay your head. That's my thinking on the matter. You get complimentary wine every evening in the bar downstairs. The place downstairs, I think El Vino, or Fino (not exactly sure) is small and intimate. The bartenders are nice and friendly. Hell, we ate appetizers with our free glass of wine every night we were there. The pastries in the hall with orange juice is a nice touch when you don't feel like trekking through the rain to grab something small in the morning. We went during Thanksgiving and the staff that worked that day we so nice. It was almost like a family gathering itself. Working together to find a Thanksgiving meal to go! :) The only thing that bugs me about this place: The pillows are literally wrapped in plastic or rubber. And you can't really sleep like that. You will sweat and your head will stick to the pillow. And the walls are pretty thin. We could hear the guys football game blasting from across the hall (But there isn't anything they can do about it; the walls) We would def. come back here again. Believe it or not, it is difficult to find something under $300 that does not have bedbugs! I paid $254 with tax for a Saturday night in peak season. Upon arrival, the hotel charges your card an extra $100. You will be refunded when you depart. The Andrews Hotel is located in a convenient location-right in Union Square. We parked in the Union Square Garage-$36/a night and a five minute walk away from the hotel. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the slowest hotel concierge I have ever experienced. It took him about 20 minutes to run my credit card and give us keys. During this time, a homeless, man stumbled into the hotel and sheepishly made himself a cup of coffee before politely exiting. The elevator is a relic. There is only one, and you will walk faster. But, the place has character! Room was small but quaint. Bed was advertised as queen, but I suspect a "full" might have been a more accurate description. Nonetheless, I slept 8.5 hours-so I am not complaining! The television was smaller than most laptops-but, hey they had a tv and it worked! Bathroom was adorable-out of a dollhouse. Miniscule shower and toilet with sink outside. I would advise bringing flipflops...the floor seemed a little precarious. It was a small room for two people, but suitable for one night. You better bet we took advantage of happy hour. You are entitled to a glass of (good!) wine at Fino's...but you have to drink it in your room or lobby. No problem, it is a nice restaurant and they probably don't want us hotel weirdos ruining the vibe! The Housekeepers graciously set up a breakfast table on every floor. So, at 9:15am, I snuck out in my pajamas to prepare a plate of breakfast pastries, fruit, juice, and coffee. Perfect simple meal to start the day. This is not a bells and whistles hotel. But, it's hard to afford bed bug-free let alone 4 stars in San Francisco. We had a good time staying here. read more

This hotel was a terrific surprise and offer great value - very clean, nicely appointed rooms very close to Union Sq. and at the lowest price anyone could find. The staff at the front desk was very helpful and friendly. There are some down sides - it's a bit noisy some nights, and in the early morning, and the carpeting badly needs an upgrade. In one room, it was quite stained so it made the room look dirty. But everything else was spotless, and many good hotels with carpeting have this problem. Affordable (for SF) & nice location. I would recommend for anyone making a short trip to downtown SF. It is an easy and well populated walk to Union Square shopping & restaurants. The location was safe for solo female traveller, but I wouldn't feel walk around too much at night. Perks: Coffee/pastries/fruit every morning just outside of room Free glass of wine in the evening Wifi was a little slow, but it worked & was free Cons: The bed was uncomfortable & it was a little bit loud *****They charge $100 a night for a deposit, which is paid back at the end of the stay. Definitely want to put the room on a credit card. This fee is higher than some of the other downtown hotels. read more

Rude customer service. No ac rooms are grimy and not clean. The carpet was disgusting. And I never got my security deposit sent back to me.

I'm on a coronavirus-review-writing kick. Stayed here once in January and was very pleased. Right downtown-ish near where I used to live and my friends all still are. Room was small as was the bathroom (even more so) but it was perfect for just me for one night. Room was clean and quiet and way comfortable. Would stay again and recommend!! read more
