The Answer is a great casual brewery with Asian fusion bar food. I like bringing groups here because there's something for everyone. They have plenty of seating inside and on the patio. You can easily walk in or make a reservation in advance. If you're dining at a table, it's full service though you aren't rushed. They have a huge menu of craft beers and a flight option to try multiple. You can also grab some of their canned beers to go. There's a wide variety of food on the menu as well. If you're with others, I'd recommend splitting a bunch of their starters.
Amazing beer selection, average food. Tried to order pad Thai but they were out of noodles. Settled for the bacon fried rice. Rice came out really hot which was good, but was way too salty and the egg was overcooked. Ran through a few great beers though, everything from a couple of IPAs, to some sours and finished with an amazing Blanton's barrel aged stout. I'd give this place a 5 for beers and a 3 for the food. Solid 4 overall.
Excellent food, friendly staff, chill vibes! They also have a nice, large outside seating area which is a huge plus. The couches are very comfortable! I wished it wasn't as buggy. Even after using the bug spray provided outside, I was getting attacked so we went back inside. H enjoyed the brown ale and I enjoyed sampling a few beers in a flight. I really liked the bock, the Stooby watermelon, and the blueberry mango fruit beer. The beertenders are friendly and helpful. We ordered food here which was fantastic!! Their prices are so reasonable for such good food, I almost couldn't believe it. I got the Bánh mì chicken sandwich and H got the drunken noodles with chicken. Both were excellent and great size portions. I liked the arcade games and played Ms. Pac Man. Overall, this is a great place we would return to!

As for food, I've tried almost everything at this point and everything is amazing. I love that they make home made bread for their banh mi and home made ranch. My only complaint is that the pickles in bahn mi could be more picked and they could add more to the sandwich
This brewery was recommended to me specifically by a friend, so I wanted to check it out while I was visiting Richmond recently. The venue is very cool, and the staff is super friendly. I went with the flight option as I wanted to try a variety of beers and they were all new to me. I liked their themed flight pamphlets, where I wrote my selections down. When the beers were brought out, the pamphlet had been flattened, and the beers occupied the other 2/3rds of the paper...I'm not describing it well, but it was cool, lol! Unfortunately, I didn't choose the best beers and I tried chugging one of them which was an epically bad idea. It turned my stomach and I wasn't able to finish my entire flight. Otherwise, I liked The Answer a lot. Perhaps I would try samples of beer before ordering a flight...though that defeats the purpose.
TL;DR: Go for the drinks, not the food or service. I wouldn't return due to the staff's lack of accountability for the service issues. Service (1/5): We were seated against the wall with our party of seven and told there was no table service and we had to order at the bar. When you order food, you're given a small table number, and the food is brought out to you. However, the table number remains on the table, which caused confusion. Eventually, five of us received our food, but one order was incorrect. Our friend had ordered a pork belly dish, but although one bartender said they were out of pork belly, the bartender who took the order still rang it up as available. He received a pork dish, but it was not pork belly. After 1.5 hours, two people at our table still hadn't received their meals. When they went to ask what was going on, it turned out the bartender had entered the wrong table number and didn't bother to come over to clarify or fix the issue. The kitchen had to rush the two meals, which came out scalding hot. When we asked the person who brought the food what had happened, they simply said, "I just bring food." Food (1/5): The Grilled Chicken Bánh Mì ($12) was dry and oddly tasted like dog breath. The only decent parts were the carrot slices and the fries. Overall, food temperatures were inconsistent. Some dishes came out cold, others were too hot to eat. Drinks (5/5): They have an impressive selection of sours and beers. We got a flight of four 5oz sours for $14 and each one was fantastic. The Beescake mead was especially good ($5 for a 5oz pour / $10 for 10oz). The beer service was the only part that worked well... probably because they pour it right in front of you instead of forgetting to bring it altogether. Ambiance (2/5): The place feels like an old Mexican restaurant converted into a brewery. There's a sad pay-to-play arcade in the back, and the acoustics are rough... sound carries, so expect to yell across the table. On the plus side, there's plenty of parking behind the building.
If you're looking for an amazing beer selection the answer is the place to go! There are so many unique beers here there's bound to be one you love. If you can't make up your mind then a flight is the way to go, with generous pours of 4 beers. There is ample indoor and outdoor seating. The food however isn't the best in my opinion. It's good but not the reason for coming to the answer. They do have a large menu with a lot of different options. I ordered the drunken noodles with tofu and the tofu was inedible unfortunately. The noodles did have a good flavor but was just missing something. The crispy spring rolls were great would definitely recommend them! There is plenty of parking and this is a great place for groups! Definitely check the answer out if you or someone you know is a beer lover!
The Answer is my absolute favorite brewery I have ever been to. Their beers are incredible. Whatever they do, they do extraordinarily well. Get the $15 flight and try a few different. They are best known for their Joose beer (fruited sours, many are almost like fruit smoothies), but I'm a stout drinker and I love them there. I generally go with one of their IPAs, 2 sours and a stout for my flight. They also have insane guest taps. Beers you will not find anywhere else around here. If you are a beer nerd, this is your spot. Also all their food is solid. I LOVE their lamb curry bowl. I live about an hour away, but anytime I am driving anywhere near The Answer and I can possible stop I do.
I've been so excited to write this review ever since taking my first sip of beer. What a find - seriously, such a unique venue that somehow pulls off being an Asian-food restaurant, clean + modern yet still divey-like bar, event space, etc. They are the gold standard for sours and stouts in-town, at least from my experiences thus far. Their drink menu is so incredibly vast and chock-full of some really unique flavors - which made even choosing four beers nearly impossible because I wanted to try them all. Ultimately went with the Sydney's Latte Stout (apparently named after our wonderful server), Incognito Bowser Stout, Rum Lychee Painkiller Sour (an instant favorite), and Passionfruit Lemonade Mango Sour - all of which were AMAZING. If only money wasn't an obstacle, I would have brought all of them home in growlers afterwards. I've written this much and haven't even gotten to the food - ever had pretzel bites and banh mi in the same meal? Sounds strange - because it was - but in the best of ways. I can't say enough about the quality of everything we ate here - the pretzel bites, aside from being a generous sharable portion, had the heartiest side of dipping cheese that I literally took a spoon to after the pretzels were gone. The pork belly Banh Mi was also a total surprise - bread was just the right amount of fluff, pork just the right amount of crisp, and of course the side of fries was just the right amount of crunch. Easy parking in the back too. My cousin is a beer savant - and despite living in Ohio, almost 7+ hours away, he told me to check this place out because even he had heard of its lore. Believe me when I say - it's officially my favorite spot in Richmond and I am not just saying that to hyperbolize. It's true and you NEED to try it immediately!
I have been waiting to come here for quite some time and the food and beer did not disappoint! Portions were incredibly large and the flight was a great value. We had to sit outside since we had our dogs, but enjoyed the quick patio service and advice from the waitress. Plenty of seating, and indoor area looked spacious and friendly. Would come back for sure!
The answer gives the vibes of a chill bar. The beer list is probably the longest I've seen in Richmond - or anywhere. They have everything from IPAs, lagers, stouts, sours, and smoothie beers. I personally love the sweeter options. The food has recently changed and gotten so much better. On our last visit we had the chicken appetizer and wow!!! I also love the Greeknamese sandwiches - which are bahn mi toppings on a gyro wrap. Definitely worth a try & follow up visits.

Been to the Answer Brewpub multiple times now and damn, they are just so good. Solid food, actually killer food more like from the very place that decided to start this adventure, Mekong. The Drunken Noodles are to die for along with a very unique take on fried calamari. And the beer, eesh so solid, I don't think you can't find a beer you like here. Truly the Answer is the answer. Just get there and try some of everything. read more

This is the local pub you want to visit. From the small town feel, large draft selection, and phenomenally cooked meals, you can't go wrong with this place. And, it has a "mug club," that gets you a personalized beer mug, and early access to any new drafts. It's a win/win! read more

The Answer Brew is always fun for a beer and quick meal. We have not been in ages, still great! Wednesday they have $5 Wake N Bacon!!!!!! Lots of tables and bar seating, 2 different outdoor seating areas They have a room of games too! Rice and noodle dishes, Banh Mi, smash burgers and an assortment of apps. BiG beer menu too! Always great service, fresh food, fun atmksphere though it is pretty loud! I went to this place for a Christmas wreath making event. This is a nice little brewery type restaurant place that doubles as a place that does little side events. I had a blast and made. super cute wreath too. My daughter ordered some wings and said they were really delicious. It took everything out of me to not sneak one. I absolutely will come back to experience the brewery and sample something off the menu. read more

This is such a lovely lunch spot, I stopped in for lunch and to try some of their Joose which I heard a lot about on Yelp. I ate alone which can be awkward at some places but my server was really kind and walked me through the menu. The food was phenomenal, I had the brisket bahn mi and I am still dreaming about it. It had the perfect amount of spice and was so filling. It came with a side of Pho for dipping instead of the usual French fries side which was fun. The Pho had bean sprouts in it which added a delightful crunch. The drinks were really good I had the banana colada swirlsicle joose and the gold plated spoon. The banana one was my favorite as I found the gold plated to be more sour. Overall, I would reccomend this place for a hang out with friends or even a date as they had arcade games that would be fun to play while trying their offerings. read more

We were here for the first Asian Festival in Richmond but with it being overcrowded and long lines outside we decided to try out the restaurant inside! 2 in our party did beer flights- ease of ordering and variety of beers too notch and took back to our tables so we could order food. Most options on the menu included beer or pork and I'm a chicken and fish kind of girl so I did have limited options and went for the Mekong Rocket shrimp as I famished! So the rest of my party received their food and mine finally came out after they had already started eating. I take a bite and it's extremely chewy and I wasn't sure why then I pulled the breading off and my shrimp was undercooked.. I opened about her and damn if that one was completely undercooked. I immediately sent dish back to kitchen and they did offer to cook again but I couldn't eat a thing after that.. really disappointed but was looking forward to the shrimp. So I can only vouch for the beer! Sorry guys! Cheers! read more

The service is the only thing you don't expect much from here. The food and the drinks are always outstanding. It was a bit chaotic today with a retro video game swap going on but it was manageable. Extensive beer, cider and mead options with a Vietnamese fusion menu create a unique experience in the Staples Mill area of Richmond. read more

Sometimes I really wish Yelp allowed for half stars. The fact that there are fantastic beers here is what will push me to give it 4 stars though. We love breweries and The Answer is definitely one that is known to be a destination brewery. We came into town on a Monday and arrived not realizing it was trivia night so the place was packed. They said we could order at the bar though and grab a seat outside. Just standing in line at the bar there were two young children under foot and one who even made their way behind the bar as the "responsible" adult was too busy going through the beer menu. Unfortunately these kids continued to run around unchecked while we tried to relax with our drinks. I realize this is a hard position for the brewery and I don't fault them. I will say the menu is extensive and it's probably a good idea to look online and get an idea what you would like. We knew what we wanted right away as far as food, which was the tofu Banh mi. Unfortunately, they were out of it. The bartender suggested the wake 'n tofu (fried rice) and we ordered that and a side of dumplings. The dumplings had too much dough with not enough filling and were bland. The rice was very bland, even when adding the leftover dipping sauce to it. We ate, as we were hungry but it was disappointing. They offer flights and just give you a sheet of paper and a pencil and you can fill it out yourself. We sat outside where it was quieter to figure out what we wanted and chose a flight of sours. They are known for heavily fruited sours and they did not disappoint. They had a very wide variety with some unique fruit combinations. After we each picked out a stout (though one we wanted had kicked) and the stouts were thick and flavorful. When leaving we grabbed one of their adult capri suns, which is a pouch with mead that comes frozen. I picked the PB&J Cheesecake flavor and it was the perfect treat. You could always find something here on the menu to please your taste buds. We made a return visit as they had a few new stouts on draft and we were hoping the get the Banh mi this time. It comes with fries and we added a side of beer cheese. The fries were hot and crispy and the beer cheese was good. The Banh mi was flavorful and packed to the brim. Next time ordering it there was way less in the sandwich and it came with fewer fries. That kind of inconsistency should not happen in a restaurant and I still don't know which way it should actually come. The service overall was pretty good, especially since they were busy. However, I do think they needed some better communication and organization. The one visit had a sign that said 1 1/2 hour wait but we were told we could order and sit outside. The next had the same sign but she said we could only order beer as no food orders would be accepted. However, seats opened up at the bar and the bartender said it was no problem to sit down and order food. Also the to go cooler is not self serve and the employees must get it for you. The one downside is not being able to look at dates. You should drink crowlers relatively fresh and we were unaware we were buying a crowler which was already a few weeks old at that point. Overall, I would definitely return. If nothing else all the beers we had were really good and some were outstanding. I would definitely check the website for events going on and try to hit at not peak hours. They do update the online draft list frequently which makes it easy to see what is available and have an idea what to order. read more
I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times where a well-reviewed restaurant on Yelp has turned out to be a bust. Sadly, this was one of those times. I came here with two friends from out of town recently to give it a shot. One of my friends is Vietnamese and the other loves burgers, so I felt this would be a slam dunk choice. The lackluster service when we arrived (and throughout) was my first clue that this was not the "match made in heaven" I was hoping for. Our server was absent most of the time and clearly disinterested when present, did not ask if we wanted more to drink, did not check in with how the food was, or make any other appearances. I've been treated better at fast food spots, to be honest. To an extent, it was probably a good thing that the server didn't make any inquiries about how things were going, because we would not have had much positive to report: the sandwiches and fries were largely flavorless (despite my "An"imal Burger being covered in sauce, it was just a heap of nothingness), the ambience was non-existent (I felt like I was a package at an Amazon sorting center with the way the dining area was designed), and this was all despite the prices being relatively high. Usually in life, you want fast, good, and affordable, and you have to pick your top two. Here we got none. I reserve one star reviews for places with no redeeming qualities, and The Answer does have two great qualities to save it from that fate: 1) the beer menu is fantastic, and I am now a convert to Jackie O's Dark Apparition, which is probably one of the top three stouts I have ever had. I do not want to come back here but if someone wanted me to take them to a bar with a good stout, I might make an exception just for this beer, 2) They have a ton of parking in the back of the store, which is a welcome change of pace for Richmond where parking spots are becoming increasingly rare and expensive. If you're looking for an elegant selection of craft beers and don't care about ambience, you could give this place a shot. If you're looking for food, fun, or fantastic service, keep on looking. Overall: 2.0 stars ---- Pros: - Outstanding beer menu, and I highly recommend Jackie O's Dark Apparition stout. - Plenty of parking in the back of the store makes this an easy visit. Cons: - Some of the worst service I have received in years, which is impressive considering how low the bar has fallen in the restaurant industry since turnover skyrocketed. - The food is bland and flavorless and I apologize to my tastebuds for even deigning to finish it. - Prices are high, despite the low value provided. - No ambience to speak of. We sat at a table instead of the bar, so maybe the bar is nicer, though I would never consider bringing a date here regardless. read more
The Answer Brewpub is an outstanding space with delicious beer and cider choices and fantastic food! They have fantastic appetizers, I got edamame's and some friends got egg rolls and shrimp chips which are to die for!! I had gotten a cider called A Little Iniquity and it was from NH! They also have fantastic Beyond burgers that even come with Vegan Cheese! I can't have dairy so it was exciting that they had that as an option! They have fantastic hours! read more

My favorite brewery in RVA! I've been coming here for years, and it never disappoints. The beer is top-notch, and they have some of the most interesting flavors/combinations the market. I'm a huge fan of fruited and sour beers and they have a great selection to choose from! They also recently updated their food menu. The owners are the same as Mekong, so you KNOW the food is amazing. Their food has always been fantastic, but they recently added a few additions, such as the fried shishito peppers. SO good!! Service is always great and the atmosphere is very family friendly as well. Would highly recommend!! read more

Best place to get beer I've ever been to. Amazing sours and IPAs, with so many to choose from, you could never try them all. Inside has plenty of seating and has pinball machines and other arcade games. The service was great, always came back to check on us. The Pork Belly Bahn Mi sandwich was good. read more

Don't let the good reviews fool you, I went here with my family and we all hated it. I got dumplings and they were soggy. The presentation was horrible, they were just thrown on a baking sheet. Took forever to get our food. read more
