The Arboretum, a couple of miles from where we live, is one of Austin's shopping and dining destinations. When you think of the Arboretum, you likely think of businesses from Capitol of Texas Highway and Research Blvd including Great Hills Trails and Jollyville Road areas. This area has evolved over the 25+ years we have lived nearby. Some anchor stores include the Cheesecake Factory, Soma, and Chico's in one section of the Arboretum. Another Area include Target, Jason's Deli and World Market. The Arboretum also includes stores like Hallmark, La Madeline and TJ Maxx (for all the Maxinistas). The Renaissance Hotel is a notable hotel used for special events and conferences and has been around as long as I can remember. You can find just almost anything in this area of the city. We lost some key businesses like TGIF, Macaroni Grill, Pier 1 Imports and Gap. However, places like Trader Joe's and Modern furniture have been great additions. The mix of stores is nicely balanced between... local and national level businesses. The layout is especially walkable with places to sit and relax. The green space at the Arboretum is truly a highlight from picnic areas near Amy's ice cream to the Arboretum duck pond. The Arboretum offers a plethora of business to frequent. Whether you need a new sofa, fancy jewelry, an everyday bra, or toiletries, this shopping mall for suburbanites is the place to be. Restaurants, cafes, and coffee shops. Outdoor areas to relax and stroll (Arboretum Duck Pond) on walking trails and tree-lined streets. The mall opened in 1985 and manages to stay relevant in a time when online shopping is the preference over old school malls. Nice place to grab a bite or grab a new outfit. read more

Arboretum is nice little shopping center. It's an outside shopping space. Lots of parking. And a free parking garage down behind the Cheese Cake Factory. They have a Barnes & Noble, 5 guys, Love Sac, Orvis, nail salon, Sugar Boo. Con Olio's olive oil and balsamic vinegars, and there's a spice specialty store too. I believe on Sundays they have a small farmers market there. It's a really nice shopping center. They do have some benches you can sit, and in the back where Amy's ice cream is, there's a little park. Kids can play, parents can sit and watch. Years ago they used to have a live band in the summer time. Not sure if they still have that or not. read more

I love the Arboretum and the solidarity they show between businesses for community events like the Pups & pints event I went to there this weekend. There's also little musical instruments for the kiddos to play with, life sized cows for them to pose with, a giant chess set, an overlook to pose with your family in front of hill country, a pond where you can watch ducks swim happily, an ice cream shop, home goods stores, an Orvis store, a Barnes and noble, a fantastic art gallery, a Cheesecake Factory and more. All fine and worthy businesses perfectly curated in my opinion for an evening of shopping and dining with the family. I will say I wish the vendors gave more than a thimble full of Samples at the event. Last year was perfect. Maybe put a stipulation for sample sizes in keeping with the "pints" event name. :-) read more

This is a nice mall with several unique and interesting shops. I can spend a few hours here just looking around at all of them. There's also a large chess set for the kids, seating and if you walk down the path you can find large statues of cows that kids can play on and an overlook. Parking can get a bit hairy so coming early is a good idea. read more

I'm a VERY lucky girl!! The Arboretum at Great Hills is directly behind my work building..we literally share a parking garage with the Cheesecake Factory! :). So this means whenever I'm just in dire need of fresh air & needing to take a break from work I can go hang out at the super shaded, very peaceful, & beautiful hidden gem called the Arboretum or we can just walk over to the Cheesecake Factory for lunch..I know kinda dangerous! ;) Not only are you shaded from the sun with the huge trees but there are also several picnic tables to enjoy lunch or you can check out the famous granite cow statues. There are also outside charge outlets that you can charge your phone on if needed while lounging. I love the arboretum! Living in close proximity, there is a small but refined list of stores and several dining places to choose from! 1. Amy's ice cream = winning at staying open late 2. Woooow what a pretty outdoor mall! Lots of large trees give plenty of shade to the parking lot to keep your car cooler. They also have a parking garage that's free on the weekends and weekdays after 5pm. Lots of pretty decorative string lights strung between and around trees. There's a gorgeous overlook to enjoy the quiet of nature (and maybe your ice cream!), as well as an ornate fire pit. I think they have events by it on Friday nights... though we were there on Saturday. Some unique stone sculpted cows made for some fun photo ops. Good assortment of shops to peruse. We spent a lot of time browsing the Barnes & Noble/GameStop and then having dessert at the Cheesecake Factory. read more

I only visit the Arboretum when they host the "Wine down Wednesday" event. I always have a good time tasting wine and trying nearby restaurants food. The event is well organized and always runs smoothly. The vendors are nice and knowledgeable about the wine and food they serve. The Arboretum area is very nice, clean and quiet. I have browsed a couple of stores and the sale associates were always nice and ready to assist me. Plenty of parking is available. However, I have noticed several stores do not have restrooms that customers can use. read more

It's a fun and well-maintained area for humans but management is too short-staffed to care about the ducks in the back of the property. In the 2 months following September 5th, 2018, 40+ ducks have been stolen at night by two people. (The large full-grown males are the main target by thieves because they provide more meat.) Management is aware but the ducks are only a number to them. Park visitors have offered to move the ducks to a sanctuary (for free), but were declined. In the meantime, ducks continue to be stolen in multiples. Park visitors are left conducting overnight watches of the pond but one cannot be there 24/7. read more

This is a beautiful shopping center. The shops are more of higher end. Not casual. However if you know what you're going for the campus is well kept. A kinda secret park is hidden in the back towards Cheesecake Factory. It's near some dessert shops and a great place to hang out with kids. read more

I have to say that between the trees, the old granite sculpted longhorn cows, and the view, this place is amazing. This is where I would come with the kids, or even come alone with the book. It truly is part of the hill country, part of Austin. I have to say I have been visiting the Arboretum for over 20 years, and it has changed a lot since when I first visited it. But the one thing that has not changed is the continuous presence of the black and white dressed security guards. They patrol the area constantly. They don't say much much at all. read more

The Arboretum's pretty nice, kinda like a slightly upscale strip mall. There's all kinds of stores here, including a large Barnes & Noble, GameStop, Jos. A. Bank and others, plus an Amy's Ice Cream and a few other eateries in the area. There's a little walkway of sorts above all the stores that gives you a nice view of the pond area behind here. Technically that place is called the Arboretum at Great Hills, but we usually just lump the shopping center and the nature area all into the Arboretum. In general it's a nice place to hang out, and centrally located in North Austin so that people from closer to downtown or from the suburbs don't have to drive too far. read more

I love the diversity of activities which seem carefully designed and thought out. There are definitely some photo opportunities! You might have to hunt a bit though. Friday, February 1 Around 9 p.m. my family and I went to The Cheesecake Factory located in the Arboretum in celebration of my sister's birthday. I was excited not only because it was my sister's birthday (party of 16) but also it was my first time being at The Cheesecake Factory. It is a very nice place but after about 1.5 hours later we were finally seated. The food was pretty good. We left the restaurant around midnight and noticed several cop cars out front. We get to our truck only to find out we've been a victim of "ATTEMPTED AUTO THEFT." The thieves broke the lock to our truck and also jammed and damaged/broke our ignition switch. Our truck couldn't even start!! My family was stranded! I was in shock because this has never happened to us, not to mention we couldn't believe this actually happened in a "nice" part of town. So here is my question: Where was the mobile security patrol? Hmmm good question! We filed a police report and were told by officer M. Heyward that 4 trucks (in addition to ours) were also broken into ....WOW UNBELIEVABLE!! Result: So here is my little family, stranded with no option other than my husband calling a tow truck company from the town we live, which by the way is about 45 minutes away from Austin. I was in complete shock all weekend until Monday. I called Cheesecake Factory early Monday and spoke with manager Sherston to let them know what happened in their parking lot and felt someone should be liable for their customer's damaged property. Unfortunately, Sherston was quite insensitive and quickly referred me to Simon Properties. I called Simon Property early Tuesday only to be instructed to call back after 1 p.m. Conclusion: When customers visit an establishment, they should have a reasonable sense of security that their belongings will be safe. If something is damaged, there is such thing called insurance....but I find even getting to this point is almost impossible... so far. read more

I prefer North Austin to South, so naturally, I love the Arboretum. Despite the increasingly large number of homogenized companies who choose to do business here, the rolling hills and lush greenery of the park area near the shopping center make it a true Austin jewel. As a photographer, I often shoot portaits of people near the Arboretum lake. I currently live downtown, so I don't make it up North all that often anymore. Although the places within the Arboretum area are not necessarily my all-time favorites, there are so many places I like in such a close vicinity, it really makes it worth the trip for me. As for shopping, there are a lot of major players -- Saks, TJ Maxx, Pier 1, Sephora, Victoria's Secret, Express, Restoration Hardware, Banana Republic, Gap, Tomma Bahama, Sharper Image, and the list goes on. It's worth mentioning that the best Barnes & Noble in town is located here. As far as dining, you will again find mainly big chains -- TGI Friday's, Cheesecake Factory, PF Changs, Carraba's, Outback, Starbucks, etc. But there is also some good local flavor, too -- Amy's Ice Cream, Z Tejas, Eddie V's, Firebowl, and more. Whenever I'm aimlessly driving around Austin, I inevitably find myself in the Arboretum. It might not be the most unique part of Austin, but I still really love it there. read more

How many outdoor areas can boast a bunch of stone cows ( the site of many prom pictures), an outdoor pond with ducks, tables to eat Amy's ice cream, a bunch of specialty stores, and a Barnes and Noble? The Arboretum. Yeah baby! I grew up going to the Arboretum, first for movies at the Arbor Theatre (since moved and replaced by the cheesecake factory,) Later for books at Barnes and Noble. Much later this location served as the spot for several friends surprise engagements, and now I go here on dates. As the areas close to the Arboretum are getting more and more built up with tons and tons of stores and nature is becoming more and more obliterated in North Austin, this place will continue. Go there for a cup of coffee, a new shirt at the Gap, a pause to toss a coin into an enormous fountain, an expensive dessert at The Cheesecake Factory or a push-up bra at Victoria's Secret. I think the Arboretum has a bit of everything, and a lot of Austin. read more

I work here, it's a fine location. Very pleasant tree lined walking areas, decent places within walking distances to grab some lunch. I have covered parking which in Texas is a #1 work benefit. Sadly I may be moving out west to a much less lux set of working digs off Parmer. If that happens, I'll miss the arboretum. read more

Pretty place but boring on a Friday night. They need some new restaurants and things to do here to keep it alive. The ice cream place (Amy's) had people lined up out the door. Must be good. The parking lot is very tight and people race through like maniacs. Hopefully the parking garage situation is better, I have not tried it yet. read more

My hubby and I took our 15 month old out for ice cream! Going to Amy's is always a treat, but it was so nice, he decided to sit outside. Down the steps there are some outdoor picnic tables that look at some stone cows. Everything seemed so clean. The grass was neatly trimmed and the mulch was fresh, but not too fresh. We enjoyed our ice cream and took her to play on the cows. She loved climbing up on them and fast-walking from cow to cow. She wanted to sit on each one. We played on the cows for a while and wondered by Con' Olio's. Yum! What a fun place to go for an afternoon outing with the kids. (I have also taken my kiddo to the pond to feed the ducks and fish. Which is fine, but it's just really your run of the mill selection of stores (Barnes and Noble, The Gap, TGI Friday's, etc). And again fine, it's just not that exciting. I recently moved to Austin and was on my way to a temp agency when I discovered the Arboretum...I didn't even know this place existed! lol There are numerous shops and restaurants and just a beautiful place for an outdoor mall or for meeting someone for a bit to eat. the back part of the arboretum deserves 4 stars - its actually pretty with a park and lake - with scenic views of the hills around 360 and of course the stone cows which the school kids and tourists seem to love.... there's even a hotel and a few high rise office spaces here so the land is kind of mixed use without the housing element. the front part where the stores are sucks... pretty much the stores face the parking lot - reflecting allot of heat back out to the atmosphere - and getting to the stores means you'll probably risk getting run over by someone in a Suburban/Hummer or Lexus SUV with stickers of there kids names on the back. the shops are okay a mix and match of local stuff (spa, Amy's, wiki wiki, thunderclouds) and chain stores like gap/pottery barn/express/ cheesecake factory. read more

THIS is an outdoor shopping center for walking. It was built so people don't need cars to get between (high end) shops ---and the resturants which do exist. When I moved here. there was a TGIFriday's and an Asian resturant in the complex. They're now repleced with an upscale Italian grille and a bakery from,...suprise, suprise College Station. You get plenty of shade with all of the trees--which have been here since the 1980's--they are huge. I know the in thing is supposed to be Trader Joe's (where a Saks 5th Avenue previously was). But their prices are only so-so and it's jus like gas station food packaging, Skip it, okay!! The Barnes and Noble is good if you want to get an idea of what new book is 'popular' as far as selling, or if you need something 'right away. But if you want to buy something at a good price---get it used and online. After the fiasco which was Highland Mall, the City appears to be more cautious in handing 'previous developments'. They are refreshing this development so people--and companies will continue actively utilizing it. You no longer have to guess what the main tenants are. read more

I love the merchandise. It's beautiful and high quality. For my last furniture purchase I called this location to order versus ordering online. Today I drove 2 hours to make another purchase of several chairs and wall decor. My husband and I were in the store over 30 minutes checking the items out. Not a single sales person acknowledged us. They were not even assisting other customers just looking at the iPads or talking to each other. I'm going to assume they are not making commission or that they worry much about overall store sales. Terrible customer service at this location. I hope this is not par for the course for all RH locations but for now I will order online. When we left I told a sales associate that I had come to buy but would not support this store. The reply was basically a "sorry" with a snotty attitude.
