We got a turkey sandwich on rye bread with some kind of delicious red berry sauce and a dill pickle spear. What made the sandwich especially delicious was the thick slice of tomato on it. We came here during a long bike ride starting in Peterson and ending in Whalan. This is something of a family tradition as we bike to the pie shoppe and eat there! The line for the shoppe was well out the door -- but it was Labor Day weekend and very lively. I thought the wait was a bit long. We each ordered one pie each. They were all good, but I don't have pie often so I don't have an amazing frame of reference. That said, the atmosphere, location, and offerings make it totally worth it! read more

When biking the Root River trail, this is a destination not to miss. Our group stopped in just before noon. Everything is fresh so things do run out. I was twelfth in line and three choices ran out before I ordered. I didn't care. There is such a delicious variety that we still had a great pie. Decided to venture here from Lanesboro as I heard good things. They are also open seasonally. Ordered a Smoked Turkey sandwich on marble rye bread with lingonberry sauce on it. The tomato appeared fresh and it was thick. I ate half and brought the other half home. Price $9, no chips or pickle included. There was a large variety of pies. These are $6.50 each or $25 for take and bake or $30 whole pie. Not the biggest pie slice and prices seemed very high for a city with 67 population. My pie was peach blackberry. Probably one and done for me. No glasses of water offered, you need to buy a bottle of water. Seemed too alacarte for me. read more

We drive all the way from Minneapolis to camp and bike the Root River Trail. Our first stop is ALWAYS for pie and coffee, sometimes ice cream too, at Aroma Pie Shoppe. The crust is the BEST and homemade by the owner who hand rolls every crust! Many of the berries are locally sourced and each pie is created or cooked day of sale! This trip we enjoyed the sour cream raisin (YUM) and raspberry peach crumb! Some other favorites are anything with apple, crumb topping or lemon or lime cream pie! And did I mention the ice cream? A la mode is the only way to go! When you come to Lanesboro keep driving, stop in Whalen for pie then head back to Lanesboro! Definitely worth the drive or bike ride! Be sure to meet the owner too! She is one magnificent gal and knows the baking industry and is top notch when it comes to customer service! We will definitely return soon! read more

We live locally and decided to visit the Aroma Pie Shop in Whalen. We had sandwiches, soup and pie. The food was fine and the pie was delicious. The prices are tourist prices, $6.00 for a piece of pie! My piece of rhubarb pie was more like a half piece! I was disappointed with the size of my piece of pie especially for the price! The girls working in the restaurant/pie shop appeared to be high school age so maybe that had something to do with portions. I had to remind her that I also had ordered coffee. No refills on coffee! This place has AMAZING pie. We tried the cherry, caramel apple, and triple berry vanilla creme. They were all delicious. My favorite was the caramel apple. They offer a la mode, but to be honest the pie was so flavorful and moist it really doesn't need it. That being said, I will try it next time. We will definitely be going back to try some of the other varieties. The restaurant also has a great atmosphere. Clean, bright, tons of seating, and fun decor. Dining rooms (if you can call a closet and a sun porch rooms) were completely disorganized when we were there and nobody felt very welcome from the stone-faced help. This shop actually had excellent pie, but I cannot give it a better review due to its firm and ridiculous "no water" policy. This shop is located on the state bike trail. It's heavily traveled and I suspect most of the customers are bicyclists. Our family of four stopped for pie and ice cream 2/3 of the way through a 24 mile ride on a hot sunny day. We had drank all of our water. After ordering we asked for water - as we were very thirsty and the pie would make us more so. They said they would only up sell us bottled water. What the ?? First, our family tries not to use bottled water whenever possible - but also, we had our own bottles that needed refilling. From the tap. Free water. But nope. Even after eating our pie. We were directed to a nearby park and told to use the spigot at the bottom of the drinking fountain near the ground (because it impossible to fill water bottles at a drinking fountain). We were told this by an adult - presumably a manager or owner. Huge customer service fail. Water is free and good will is priceless. I recommend getting pie elsewhere - it's also avail in the other trail towns. Hopefully they will change their policy. Buy pie = Free water. read more

I am from GA and am visiting with friends in Rochester. This group has been visiting this pie shop for the past 4-5 yrs to have your wonderful Coconut Pie. I was the only one who had not visited before. In the past they have purchased an entire pie and the staff has cut the pie according to the number there given them utensils, Etc, We ordered a pie in advance to be sure we ,5 of us would have a pie to be divided. THIS WAS NOT TO BE. We did get the pie but they refused to cut the pie and refused to give us a knife to cut the pie or utensils. Of course we were told we could buy pie buy the slice at $4.50 a slice. We drove 40 Miles (from Rochester) just to visit this pie place. We were shocked at the response to our request. Buyer beware. We were disappointed but were able purchase utensils in the town heading home and enjoy the pie at a picnic table at the DQ. We shared our experience with them as we will with others . I would doubt that you have this request often so I fail to understand why you could not have complied with our request. Our plan was to order drinks and ice cream. All of this said we were disappointed and feel like you should be more customer oriented to specific situations. We are admittedly of the older generation but we do know good and poor policy and service. You do not have either. I had the blueberry custard crumble pie and my husband peanut butter pie. Each slice is $4.19. While they were good I'm not sure it was worth it. We were so fortunate that they were open on 4/27! No lunch foods--they explained that when we called ahead to see if they were open--but it was the pie we were after. And it certainly lived up to its reputation. My husband, son, and I had blueberry, key lime and banana cream, respectively, and none of us had a morsel of the (generously sized) slices left. Service was friendly and the place is darling, cute atmosphere. Oh, and there were so many hummingbirds at the feeders, it was such a fun rest stop from our bike ride. read more
