Talking to the artist I just ran into. Preface: I don't know jack about art. I went to my first art opening 2 years ago at DiverseWorks as apart of my job. Then someone invited me to an Art League opening. I've missed very few shows - like 2 - since then. It's a step up from your friend's friend's 'gallery' that you really don't get - but it isn't someplace you're going to go and talk art theory and your favourite artists from the 18th century. Or event 21st century. It's local. It's fun. It's free.

The instructors are very nice and helpful. You get an intro and two hours to complete & glaze your piece. They fire your pieces for you, and I've never been disappointed with the outcome. They've recently started doing handbuilding 6-week series that I wish I could be apart of, but unfortunately as of now it's on Sundays in the middle of the day, and I frequently work weekends during that time. If they offered a weekday handbuilding series, I would be all over that like white on rice.

We booked the 45 minute candle-making class not realizing there was a difference between it and the regular 2 hour long class. Trust me - there's a big difference! We realized we weren't going to figure out another time to do the longer class, so we doubled down on the 45 minutes. We really enjoyed picking out our vessels and scents for the candles. During the 45 minute class you get access to some but not all of the available scents. We enjoyed the mixing and matching and I settled on a couple floral combos for my candles. I like that they list different categories of scents that tend to go better together. Next, you measure out the scents to mix with your wax. Our chandlers did a lot of the heavy lifting (heating the wax and stirring) for us as we had our hands full. Finally, we poured out our wax and cleaned up! We were able to pick up our candles the next day and I've enjoyed the smells throughout my apartment SO much since then. I learned so much about candle care too. I even stopped by a few days later - they sell DIY kits for candles, soaps, and even bath bombs, which I got as a Christmas gift for a family member! I love that they encourage you to save your vessel to reuse at another class to make a new candle - I will certainly be doing that. They're pretty easy to access with free parking in rice village garages for 2 hours. I can't wait till next time I visit!

This was…read moremy second time visiting Black Phlox, where I learned that "phlox" is a type of flower, and I'm so glad I returned. The level of attention, detail, and guidance throughout the two-hour session is truly unmatched. My table included six women celebrating a "Spring Into Friendship" social event. Together, we were able to try 72 different scents across top, middle, and base notes to create something unique and complementary to our natural body chemistry. I loved the clear instructions, the pacing of the session, and the R&B playlist that felt like a sweet throwback to my aunt's playlist she used to blast on her living room stereo set in the '90s. One of the things I love about Black Phlox is that every visit is guaranteed to feel new. Each table is given a different curated set of scents to work from, so no two experiences are exactly alike. Dr. Rica even pulled out a few special "vault" scents during our session that included deeper, more intense fragrances that are used sparingly, but added richness and character to the final blends. The interaction with Missy, Tasha, and Dr. Rica made the experience feel intimate and fun, like I was hanging out with my cool, older cousins. Not once did I feel rushed. Even when I had a little hiccup while pouring my scent into the bottle, Tasha and Missy jumped in to help me correct it so I could leave completely satisfied with what I'd created. The pricing was more than fair. You have the option to upsize your bottle, and they even offer 50% off if you return and remake the same scent, which is something I've never seen offered in other custom scent classes. The value, the experience, and the meaningful interaction make this a go-to recommendation for me. The icing on the cake is that you get to bring your own bottle of wine and/or alcohol for just a $2 cork fee. They provide cups and ice, and the space is filled with good conversation, plenty of cackles lol, and community energy you won't find anywhere else. After our session ended, we spent at least another hour laughing, taking pictures, and finishing our prosecco. Not once did we feel hurried or unwelcome. That kind of hospitality is rare and speaks volumes. I also learned that Black Phlox offers interactive perfume and cologne-making stations for events like weddings. We had two brides-to-be in our group, and they were thoughtfully gifted in-house made candle wax melts along with their custom perfume purchases, which was a beautiful and personal touch that made the night even more special. It's a beautiful space built by even more beautiful women, and I love hearing their stories and seeing how they've turned inspiration into a thriving business. You can find almost anything in here: yarn, fabric, kids books, cookbooks, misc cards, seashells, school supplies, cds, stickers, ink pads, and a lot more. It's organized in sections but it's a lot to take in. Most things were sold by weight or number of items which was very affordable. Most expensive thing was the yarn which was $12/pound, but everything else we bought was less than $2 each. If you took the time, you could find some steals. I got a brand new jacket for my dog for $1. I'll definitely be coming back here.
