21/100 I didn't know…read morewhat to expect when walking into the Animation Academy, but after a half hour lesson in how to draw a Disney character, I walked out with a pretty good rendition of Tigger drawn by my own, two little hands. I'm not an artist, but the instructor made drawing so easy that anyone can do it. They take you through step by step, using basic shapes and strokes like triangles and circles, and make it all so easy. I can't wait to go back again to see who I get to draw next.

I wish I knew about the Animation Academy earlier! It is literally a hidden gem for all the…read morewannabe artists out there like me. I came across this place on my most recent visit to Disneyland/California Adventure over Thanksgiving break. Since the lines for all the rides were horrendous, my boyfriend and I tried some new things in the parks that were not rides. The Animation Academy was the highlight of the trip. There are "shows" every half hour where you sit inside a mini lecture hall and learn to draw Disney characters. There is a Disney animator who walks you through each step so that you come out with a picture that actually looks pretty good! Things move pretty fast so make sure you keep up with the animator and pay attention. Things can go from simple circles to eyelashes really quickly so here are a few things to keep in mind so that you don't seem so flustered during your first visit to the Academy. 1. Get there at least 10 minutes early so that you are guaranteed a seat. People start to line up. 2. When you choose your row, move down all the way to the end of the row and don't leave spaces between you and the next party. They don't have cooties. But most of all, don't be annoying and stop in the middle so that people have to climb over you. You can see everything from the right or left sides, trust me. 3. Follow along with the animator and don't freak if you make a mistake. Erasers are not allowed. If you come to the Animation Academy and follow along, you will honestly surprise yourself with what you can create! We went three times and drew Tigger, Mickey, and Dale. You can ask the guy at the front to see which characters are coming up so that you can plan your visits around their lesson plans! It is basically a free drawing lesson that can be just as fun for adults as it is for the kids. Actually maybe even more fun for adults.

But if this company is still running their business, it's definitely a place you do not want to step in. I wish I could give this place 0 stars. The management of this business seriously deserves 0 stars instead of 1 star because they are clearly completely money hungry, despicable, unprofessional, and completely dishonest. I also have to agree with all the negative reviews written about them too. One time as we walked in back in the late spring of 2009, we were told that there was supposed to be an appointment but we explained that we were visiting from out of town and so the owner and president, Angie Kim, came out and we talked with her with another guy. I looked into their school to see if they offer guidance and classes to make a portfolio for graduate schools since their ads mentioned about graduate art school acceptances. It turned out that everything was false. They didn't specialize in graduate school admissions, only undergraduate admissions. Angie and another guy who was VP at the time informed me and my mother that we would need to pay a certain $300.00 or $500.00 fee (I can't exactly remember) for them to find an instructor that specializes in graphic design. Also, they informed us that we would need to schedule a meeting with them to discuss how much these specific private sessions would be for me to make a portfolio for graduate art schools. Does that make any sense? Pay a certain fee to find a teacher and a fee for the private sessions to make a portfolio? We thought it was absolutely inane of them to charge for something like that and then something else. I later learned the guy who was VP is actually Angie's son, Daniel Cho. Even though Daniel doesn't work for Vision 21 Art & Design anymore as of now, he was very unprofessional, condescending, and a real arrogant know-it-all. He even compared me next to his sister of how she did a undergrad thesis and I didn't do one during undergrad. How is that very relevant? I wish I had told him that just because she did a thesis and I didn't do one during undergrad doesn't mean that she is god's gift to the planet and far more superior than me and anyone else. There was no doubt that this was his way of trying to discourage me to go to graduate schools. Guess what? Daniel didn't even go to any art schools and he didn't even major in art and design. So how would Daniel know everything about art and design? I got the impression from them that they saw me as someone who is not grad school material, but they want the money from me to be in their program. Does that make any sense? Was it worth to join their program? Definitely not! It just shows that they are way more interested in getting money. After we left, we thought about it and decided it wasn't worth it. So, we decided to call them and cancel the meeting that was scheduled for the next day and not go forward with them. There was no doubt in our minds that the fee for the private sessions would be extremely expensive. We're guessing it would be at least over $10,000.00 because other previous reviews report that the classes are over $18,000.00- 20,000.00 and that classes were often cancelled and had no make ups for it. I suspect that a private session for me could happen like that too. About a few weeks later after we cancelled the meeting in 2009, Angie called twice to ask if I was interested in doing the private program with them and my mother said no. I actually ended up getting into graduate school without the help of Vision 21 Art & Design since I made my portfolio all on my own and getting some guidance with my former professors. Also, I discovered later and recently online that there have been all sorts of lawsuits filed against Vision 21 Art & Design for breach of contracts, wrongful terminations, fraud, etc. What does that tell you about Vision 21 Art & Design? It just shows that it's a company with a bad reputation. Regardless of whether that business is still running or not, bad karma has to come, especially to Angie and Daniel. Why? Both of them deserve bad karma because of their manipulation, unprofessionalism, arrogance, and the atrocious ways they handle business in a very selfish and dishonest way.

He can be difficult and temperamental but she's been incredibly kind and patient with him. He loves her and her class and the fact that he keeps going back every Saturday for an 1.5 hrs away from his video games is testament to this place. Everyone I've spoken to there has been super nice and helpful, even if we'd had to reschedule a class at the last minute. I must note that my son did not love his first teacher and class, like I said, he can be difficult, but the director was incredibly patient and considerate and after listening to our feedback, switched him to a different class and teacher, which was much better suited for him and he's been loving it ever since. This is just to say, even if the first class doesn't work, you might give it another chance and try a different one. Highly recommend this place!

She really looked up to her instructor/mentors and enjoyed seeing them work on their own projects. We would have loved to continue but unfortunately we had to move out of South Bay. We know they have a second studio in Santa Monica so we hope to join that one once we can move back to our home in West LA. The tuition prices were a great deal for what we gained from the classes. Thank you for the inspiration and a great program for my budding artist!

We found that Summer Studios was in the area and had different class options. We went in to check it out and get more details. David was very friendly and helped answer our questions. A date night class sounded like the best way to try it out at a reasonable price to see if we enjoyed it before signing up for a full class. On the night, we got there and the dog Sokkit was there to welcome us in. David talked us through the process and then he demonstrated the process for us, including explaining the "why" behind the steps. With that sorted, we got to get our hands muddy (covered in slippery wet clay) to throw a pot. David was watching over us and helped us with the steps as we had first-timer issues and questions. The setting was a nice way to try out pottery, and is a fun activity on a date night. We had the chance to make 3 different pots each, and they were each quite different but not too bad for a first time. David told us that for these classes, he does the work to finish off the pots (drying, trimming, firing, and glazing) and then we can come back to pick up the finished pieces. I'm quite curious how they will look when finished. Overall, very enjoyable and fun. We're probably signing up for one of the 4 or 6 week classes soon.
