    Chicken sandwich

A friend invited us to lunch at the Athenaeum. This is a members only venue. [[HIGHLIGHT]]From the architecture to the food, everything was excellent.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My chicken sandwich was so crispy and flavorful! For lunch, it came with a soup and I tried the cream of asparagus. It was very creamy, and I actually couldn't quite tell it was asparagus. It was very similar to broccoli cheddar. Service was friendly and food came promptly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Being on the Caltech campus, it had a very scholarly feel to it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I can only imagine how perfect this place would be for a wedding or event.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It was such a treat to dine here!

You need to have a membership to dine here. I'm unsure of how one can become a member, but I'd love to be one! My team had a staff retreat at Caltech and our connection made a reservation for us to dine here for lunch. Parking lot is for members only. We had parking passes so we were able to park there with no issue. You can find a street parking, but it might be difficult and you'll need to walk over. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I absolutely love the aesthetic of this place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Staffs are friendly and service was excellent! I noticed there is a buffet but as a group we decided to order from the menu instead. I ordered Grilled Hanger Steak which came with chipotle lime marinade, garlic yucca fries and roasted corn salsa. I was blown away by how delicious it was! I did not expect that at all. I seriously would like to come back!

Was here for a company event and the food was good but not great per se. Service was good but slow (albeit we had a large group). [[HIGHLIGHT]]Beautiful venue.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] You can only come here if you are a member of the club/school.

Recently I had wonderful experience to attend a luncheon at the Athenaeum. The Athenaeum is a private membership club on the campus of Caltech that started in 1930. This private club features guest rooms and areas to have meetings or parties. When you step into this club you are immediately feel like you are stepping back in time. The club has nicely retained its ambiance from the past. The rooms are appointed very nicely. The room that I had my luncheon in was adorned with wood paneling and a fireplace lite for our event. The food was very nice, although quite traditional. And the service was excellent for our luncheon. The waiters knew the proper side to take dishes away and place dishes on the table. I appreciate this great service.

We had our staff retreat at Caltech and had a wonderful experience dining at The Athenaeum. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is a beautiful place and I loved the decors.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] For lunch, they have a buffet option but we opted out of it. Everyone loved their meals. For me specifically I had the steak medium well. The steak was cooked perfectly, so tender and delicious. The potatoes were crunchy! The sauce was tangy but paired very well with the corn and overall dish. I would love to come back here. The service was excellent.

Came here for an exclusive dinner with my husband and his work associates, one of who is a member. Cocktails were superb (get the sangria!) and food and service were excellent. We dined on multiple appetizers...the plantains, shoshito peppers and grilled artichoke were all winners. I had the red snapper and hubby had the korean short ribs. Both were amazing and the presentation was top notch. We shared a few desserts, but the stand-out was the strawberry matcha cake. Would not hesitate to return to try more cocktails and the rest of the menu!

This was my 4th or 5th visit to The Athenaeum. I never thought to write a review before, since it requires you to be a member, or be invited by one. But when I saw there were other reviews, I thought I should add my own experiences. They have a dress code which they're pretty strict on, when dining in the main dining room. It's relaxed for outdoor dining (but still has some restrictions, such as no shorts). Parking in the adjacent lot is marked as "for members only", which always made me wonder if I could park there. Turns out that, yes, when invited as a guest, you can park there. I stayed overnight in a guestroom once. It was "cozy" (small!), but very nicely furnished, clean, quiet, and comfortable. I had breakfast that morning, which wasn't particularly memorable (except I remember loving the coffee). I had the buffet dinner couple times, which was very good. If I were to be invited, I'd definitely have that again. My most recent experience was with a private event. It was outdoors, but the space was tented, so it almost seemed as if it was indoors. The Athenaeum provided the space, and also the wait staff, bar, and food (buffet style). Just as with every meal I've had at The Athenaeum, the food was quite good. But this one was the only less-than-great experience I had. The wait staff I encountered were not especially friendly (rather abrupt, IMO). The buffet food was in short supply, so they actively discouraged people from getting seconds. My husband hadn't filled up his plate entirely the first time, expecting to go back and try more. They took his knife and fork, even though he asked to hold on to it. Probably a good thing for his waistline that they did. Bottom line, if you are ever invited to dine or stay at The Athenaeum, definitely do! (I haven't mentioned pricing, because as a guest, I have no idea how expensive things are.)

Purchasing the membership to the Athenaeum was my first ever experience with exclusive clubs similar to this, and my experience at the Ath was pleasantly surprising. The value of the membership is really worth it (with great value prices on gourmet food, access to events, and reciprocal benefits at clubs such as the Harvard Club in Boston), and the food at the Athenaeum is absolutely excellent. My favorite perks would have to be the monthly events they hold, such as the Father's Day Event and the AYCE Prime Rib Buffets. They have a wide variety of food at buffets and all of it is incredibly fresh, well-prepared, and thoughtful. They have something for everyone and it is perfect for large parties or for meet-ups with friends and family. The service is top notch and it is an incredible experience all-around! The first event we attended was the Father's Day Event, which had varieties of steak, corn on the cob, dessert, popcorn and more. The environment is perfect for treating your friends, co-workers, or family to a nice meal. Each event has different varieties of food, and we even got to sample things like crab legs, sushi, ube ice cream and more.

It's a private club. We came the prime rib dinner. Dinner is only for members and their guests but the management kindly sponsored us as we used to be members and had our wedding here. The prime rib was great with horseradish, au jus, and Yorkshire pudding. There was a mash potatoes bar, sushi station, selection of salads, seafood with snow crab legs and cocktail shrimp, and a whole dessert table with macarons, bread pudding, and pastries.

It was a wonderful experience to dine at the most prestigious and memorable place. It was one of the loveliest spots in Pasadena. The building is very nice. It's a private social club, member with the guests only. You can't get in without a host who is a member. If you really want you can buy a membership (see their website for details). It was a Prime Rib Buffet Wednesday dinner. There are many staffs and they were VERY attentive (will kept come over to ask if you finished your plate and offered to take it away for you) and the way their customer service were in a splendid way. The meals were deliciously great. I love and would go for second and third plates were the mashed potatoes, green beans, and Roast Prime Rib Au Jus (yummmm). The only thing I regret was I didn't get to tried all their desserts before they were out and it was around 8pm and they didn't have anymore Berry Crème Brûlées. Overall, it is a very elegant and extravagant place. Reservations can be made on-line also; walk-ins cannot be accommodated. There are parkings on the street with 2 hours limit or the parking lot on property. Semi-formal for dress code. MUST be fully vaccinated and show proof of vaccination (they do check before seating you). It was a remarkable experience to dine here. Great food and service!

This an outstanding hotel. The service was excellent, and if the people working were always pleasant and helpful. The location is on the CalTech campus. The hotel also has much interesting history. It is convenient to stores as well. The rooms are small, but very comfortable. The restaurant is excellent. While our group's meals were prearranged, there was good variety in the food and it always well prepared.

I've come to the Ath for many Caltech-related occasions. Donor events, alumni events, mentoring dinners... I can say that the food can vary tremendously from day to day. Some days the food is salted to a point where it is inedible, some days I'd want to get seconds for all the dishes. In general, I found the lunch menu underwhelming, while the dinner menus generally tend to be good. Their course menus have always been very good too. The burger is a safe choice for any occasion, but more adventerous menu items can be hit or miss. Their menu changes quite frequently, which I appreciate. Their dessert is always on point! The berries-athenaeum is a fan favorite, and the matcha panna cotta is my personal favorite. Note that the Athenaeum is only available for members and their guests!

How much does it cost for wedding ceremony and capacity?

    I've heard it's a $32,000 minimum spend and 150 guests maximum at $57,000.

Is there any one can invite me to go for dinner buffet ? Thanks

You do need to be a member; that's typically limited to Caltech faculty and staff, and affiliate members (Huntington Library and JPL staff). They put on a lovely Mother's Day brunch, Easter brunches, etc. It is possible to join as a community member… Read more

We let them know that they were undercooked. The chokes were gone for a while and when they came back they were slightly better so we just made due and realized that they just weren't very good artichokes. Also, though the heart was good, the flavor of the leaves was not great and the dipping sauce was nothing special. They were covered with diced onions for some reason. At the door, it said to seat ourselves & I immediately shot to the patio. The set up: once seated, the server comes with menus, you order & it's a sit down meal. Giselle was our friendly & attentive server, young & attentive. Hubby ordered the breakfast burrito ($11.50) & I opted for build your own omelette $11.50 for a 3 egg omelette & choice of two items- mushroom and bell peppers accompanied with breakfast potatoes, and chilaquiles ($13.99) to share. The patio seating is fresh, airy, there are tables, outdoor furnitures (sofas) and bright orange umbrellas for shade. My photos captured these elements. The food arrived shortly, although not all at once. I didn't mind it all because the ambiance was so soothing with the sound of birds chirping away and the background of other patrons talking. The only complaint from Hubby was too many pototo chunks in his burrito. My omelette was hot, fresh ingredients, delectable & the potatoes were mixed with 3 colors of bellpeppers. Oh and the chilaquiles? Pretty darn good! The tortilla chips were crispy, perfect amount of green salsa, freshly diced onions & a sprinkling of cotija cheese. Was I famished or was it that good that I devoured everything? What's left was Hubby's potato chunk discards. Giselle returned a few times to ensure our experience is to our satisfaction & another staff also stopped by to check on us. Such a perfect meal & day-- I'm so happy with this visit. Had a dinner reservation with some girlfriends celebrating two of their birthdays. The restaurant itself isn't too big but it does a pack a nice punch. Cute patio out front that takes some of the sidewalks and streets. Plenty of heat lamps which helped with the chilly nights. We got seated at one of the tables on the patios which was nice. Didn't really utilize inside area except for the restroom which it's quite cute in there. The rooms were pretty well decorated and executed. Nice bar area too. Like mentioned, we got seated on the patio and the heat lamps were great. Down to the menus, it's quite limited on dishes. Seemed like there were more shared plates versus the entrees. Drinks, it was fairly decent with their cocktails and wine. Service at the beginning was great. The staff were amazing and very friendly. We didn't order right away as we were still waiting for the last one to show. But did start off with some drinks. It didn't take that long for the first round which was nice. Food wise, the shared plate was a mixture of everything. Some of the olives, which is exactly what it is. The Belgian fries, nice thick cut fries with shredded pecorino cheese and a nice aioli sauce. We ended up getting a second order of it. The albacore tuna crudo was a hit which was really tasty. Chili ginger relish, mint and shallot, can't go wrong with that. Lastly the meatballs, tasty and very great for sharing. Entrees, the pan seared sea bass which I loved. Portion is pretty tiny which also seemed like they were a shared plate. Almost tapas styled. Nice chimichurri sauce and a side salad. The chicken Milanese also with a side salad of arugula. Simple dish but quite tasty. One of the salads that was somewhat hyped up by the waitress but it was just a salad. Decent but nothing major to rave about...lol... also the confit oyster mushrooms was major hit. Something that simple but quite tasty. And lastly the pan con tomate, rustic sourdough with tomatoes and burrata. Tasty as well. Overall the meal was good. From there, the second round of drinks did take a long time to arrive and with then plates that we shared, trying to get someone to clear the plates was another thing. Took a long for someone to clear the table before more items came. Even when the entrees came, all the empty starter plates were still there. And if someone did clear the plates, some was still left on the table. Finishing off the night, we did have the dessert which we tried all three. As it was two of our girlfriends birthday, they brought out a little bubbly for us to celebrate with the dessert. That was quite sweet and nice. Honestly opinion with the dessert, they were just ok. Nothing major to rave about. We tried all three on the menu and they were just ok. Overall, the food was great. Service was nice and the staffs were all very friendly. It did take a while for plates to get cleared from the table and second round did take a while, but it was manageable. It was a sweet gesture with the bubbly with the dessert which was greatly appreciated. The place is nice and great for catching up. Menu is limited and portions are quite small. You would have to get a good amount for sharing. Entrees, depending on what you order is small as well. But we enjoyed ourself.

Because the wait time was too long for that, we decided to try The Dive Oyster Bar -- and man are we sure glad we did. We got a total of five items: a bowl of clam chowder, the soft shell crab appetizer, the roasta, the traditional pan roast with the house speciality protein (with the crab on the side because of my dad's crab allergy), and the jambalaya, which for the last three we ate with medium heat. We shared everything (except for the crab appetizer because, again, crab allergy for dad) and found the food to be delicious, with each entree coming out tasting better than the last. Personally, the roasta was my favorite with the pan roast as a close second. Very flavorful dishes with medium heat being a good level for us (wasn't spicy for our Korean palates). Service was great, our server (unfortunately forgot his name) was attentive and quick with our requests, and although he forgot a side of rice, it was for the best as the food had settled in our stomachs by then and we were content with what we ordered. The restaurant itself is well maintained with ample table space and appropriate lighting, though the music from the evening DJ was a tad bit too loud to hear from across the table. Not a big mood killer for us, though mostly because the good was that good. We're not from this area, so the odds of coming here again are relatively slim -- but should the opportunity present itself, it'll be more than fate this time to take us through these doors once again.

It was sort of the only options they really had left. My wife and I originally decided to come by to try the hama hama but they were completely sold out which was disappointing but I don't blame them for it. Food and service here is always appreciated. Music pretty repetitive though but overall pleasant experience.

Delightfully understated atmosphere with unique tiles throughout the decor, and we loved that we could hear each other talk and enjoy each other's company. Our server was amazing, she was so knowledgeable while being personable and extremely funny. I assume she's the cook's wife based on the other reviews - I arrived a little after my aunts, so I didn't get a full introduction since they had already secured a table and had ordered some drinks while looking over the menu. I had my eye on 3 different meat dishes - the Roasted Duck Breast, the New Zealand Lamb, and the Angus Beef Ribeye Steak - and my aunts also had each picked 1 of those, so we went family style, and it did not disappoint!! The chef knows how to cook each type of meat to perfection, and the searing pans are doing exactly what they need to be doing! The Roast Duck Breast was AMAZING as cooked to the recommended medium, with delicious crispy skin. The Angus Beef Ribeye Steak at medium rare was as tasty as it was gorgeous! And the New Zealand Lamb was PERFECTION, down to the bone. We also got the gourmet macaroni and cheese as an add-on side, since all the meals come with mashed potatoes and various veggies, and I was in heaven! As someone who used to work at the Disney Parks and frequented the steakhouses and other fine dining both here and in Orlando, Sage Bistro is giving Disney a run for its money when it comes to high-quality meat dishes! The prices reflect both the cut of the meats and the skill of preparation, with it averaging to about $50 each across the 3 of us, which is pretty reasonable for top-tier quality! The only thing I had to be careful about was that many of the dishes have mushrooms, and my throat gets itchy if I eat most mushrooms, so I had to avoid those dishes. During our meal, when I mentioned it to our server for future visits, she was great at noting which dishes could completely be modified to have no mushrooms while also being realistic about acknowledging the dishes that cannot be, which sadly includes the Braised Short Rib that sounds out of this world. But I can have the Beef Rib Soup, so I definitely want to try that next because I WILL BE BACK!!! They also offer takeaway, and were very generous in giving us each a coupon card to use for ordering through their website.

Seeing the server and an Asian staff coming out from kitchen confirmed that the cooking wasn't fully American taste bud. But that is the reason why it hit me very well. Honestly, whether you have American or fusion or Asian taste bud, the taste quality is better than some average American restaurants. I tried the butter squash soup, lamp chop, and bow tie pasta with chicken. I was enjoying my soup and lamp chop a lot. The pasta was pleasant to me, but it wasn't exceptionally great compared to the lamp chop. My fiancé loved the pasta though, saying that the sauce wasn't overwhelming. It is not a cheap place to come for, but it is because the food and drinks (good white wine) have quality. The wait for the entrees was a little long, even though it wasn't that busy. I believe it was the chef spending time to make sure each dish was done well, unlike the busy restaurant where chefs only follow the restaurant's recipes to make it quick and easy. Lastly, the ambience was okay, but it was more an older fine dining/family owned style. It had some nostalgic vibe if you'd take it that way. Keep it up. I really hope it will be there forever long.
