What a fun night out! A girl friend and I decided to check this place out when in town for a girls night out. We were surprised to find something like this in Omaha after having been to comedy clubs in Chicago/ NYC/etc. The building itself is a bit of a dive, but that's almost perfect for dirty comedy. It was cold in there as the heat didn't seem to be on in the front gathering space while waiting for the show and it would have been nice to have a hot drink during the show but apparently they only served cold alcohol. We attended the 8pm "new material" show. For just $7 we were surprised to have a lineup of about 7 comedies entertaining us for about 90 minutes. We will totally plan to come back, and I will be sure to recommend this to friends in Omaha looking for a fun night out. read more

The Backline is a fantastic place to dive into all-tings improv comedy. Not only do they offer five levels of improv classes (i.e. beginner to expert), they also host several shows a week, most of which are either free or just $5 to attend. I'm happy to see that Backline's move to downtown from their DIY space in Dundee has been successful so far. The new theater space is small and intimate -- basically a few dozen chairs surrounding a little black stage and backdrop. No, there aren't many bells and whistles, rather it's a place to showcase the hilarious on-the-spot creativity of a talented group of Omahans. But that's not to say everyone who performs here is local -- nay there are many notable improvisers and improv groups who continuously pass through here for workshops and shows, the most notable of which is the Omaha Improv Festival, an annual event set May 28-June 1 2014. And don't worry. They also sell beer. read more

This was fun. Not the usual date night destination. We went to see The Sitcom & The Arena. I was amazed at these guys ability to come up with stuff on the fly, but they also make it funny and truly entertaining. Makes me wonder how I would perform if called upon to do so. The Backline is where I spend most weekends. Not only is it a venue for great improv, stand-up, and sketch comedy, but I can honestly say I've made some of my best friends in the past year and a half taking classes there. It's a great community of people. People talk about how if you want to do comedy, you have to go to NY, LA, or Chicago, but Omaha has the talent. The Backline was a lot of fun. I was particularly impressed with the quality of the comedians considering they are learning their craft. That being said, night we went the feature comedian was the least funny of the four brave souls that got up on stage. The crowd was small. More people should consider going for an inexpensive and fun night out just to give these people experience. It was enjoyable! This is a fun theater to see improv. The new place is much better for seeing a performance than the old place which was in a basement and pretty claustrophobic. Groups vary in size, approach, and ability so you get a typical improv experience but as time goes on they have developed some strong world class performers. Their annual improv festival is a great piece of work. Talent from all over and the best instructors come in and you can see some amazing stuff. Try to look at the schedule ahead as some talented veterans are at eh sattelite sites while green locals are at the main theater that you could see whenever. Not bad, not great. Went to this place on a Saturday night a few weeks ago. Only one or two of the acts were really laugh-out-loud funny. Most of the others were "ok," got some chuckles but nothing spectacular. One of the acts was pretty bad. And the last guy basically had a professional meltdown on stage, which was something to watch indeed. Also, other than me and my date there were probably no more than six to eight paying customers in attendance. Almost half of the crowd consisted of the acts waiting to go up. Ultimately it was a memorable, but highly uneven experience. Keep in mind that this is basically a school for comedians, and that really comes out when the act is constantly referring to his notes during the sketch. read more

The Backline is a hidden gem for comedy in Omaha. There are usually shows every Thursday, Friday and Saturday for free or about $5. Yes, F-R-E-E. Every show is packed with Omaha talent, and sometimes guests from LA, NY, KC or Denver pop by. There's cheap beer, lots of friendly people and no two shows are the same. I highly recommend their classes in improvising and sketch writing. Classes usually include everyone from serious improvisers to those who just wanted to try something new. Not sure if the other reviews about this place are canned or what, but my experience there was terrible. It was the absolute worst comedy I have ever been to. It was as if they picked up random people off the street and put them on the stage. The "comedians" couldn't wait to get off the stage and kept asking "how much time do I have left." The few laughs they got out of the 9 people in the audience were basically sympathy laughs, nothing more. The only good thing was a decent beer selection. read more

What a great night! Caught the 10pm Sat show and was in stiches the whole time. We've frequented another comedy club in town for years and lately have been disappointed. We wanted to try something different...am I glad we did! The Backline delivered. Not sure what David M. was referring to...the act we caught was a group of pro's who really killed it. My wife and I have seen Second City from Chicago live many times and this held a candle for sure. I feel grateful to have this club in Omaha and will be keeping a close eye, telling friends and coming out when we can. read more
