I have lived in Burke for about 25 years and this place has been here all along. It may have changed hands over the years but it is still as wonderful as it was way back when. This store is a bird lover's paradise! They carry bird food for just about any bird you would find in this area. They have custom blends for specific types of birds. Beyond feed, this shop has an amazing selection of bird feeders and baths. Just about anything you can think of they have! And if they don't have it I bet they would order it for you. Years ago I was sold a squirrel proof bird feeder because I told them about how the squirrels would chew up my feeders and empty them out. That feeder was the best feeder ever!!! Over 20 years owning it and it still tosses the squirrels off! I do have to tell you about a super hilarious gadget they sell: the squirrel bungee. There is a long bungee that you hang about 8 feet up. On the end is a long screw so you can twist in a dried ear of corn. Then all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the show. Squirrels see the corn dangling and actually think they can get it... oh those stupid humans! They jump for it and wheeee off they go! They want that corn so desperately that they try it over and over! My favorite thing in the store is Gaby the crow. When my kids were little they loved coming to see her. Full disclosure: they are both around 20 and they still enjoy popping in. It is such a rare thing for our kids to see up close, but not close enough for either the kid or the bird to get hurt. Gaby can get super stressed out sometimes so just use your parent's intuition and keep the kids far back. Kids find it fascinating how she eats and uses her talons. They also like the way she shows off her feathers. Most of all kids like the loud crowing! I can't say enough good things about WBC. The new owners have made a massive improvement in the store -- including a much greater selection of all things birding and extremely helpful staff. What luck to have it near my office so I can get my refills on seed, suet etc. and answers to the 'what is' questions. They'll even carry those big old bags of seed to your car for you! Several years ago I bought a feeder from the shop, I think it is called the Squirrel Buster. I've had many "squirrel proof" feeders in my day and this one works. The squirrels will molest it but after a while they give up. Anyway, the feeder finally, I thought, was beyond repair and I came in to buy a new one. The charming woman behind the counter told me that the feeder came with a life time warranty and rather than buy a new one the shop would repair it for free. They basically totally rebuilt it - I now have a brand new feeder at no charge! Try getting that from Walmart! I love this store. They have a great selection of feed and feeders, and you get 10% back on your purchases. Don't try to feed Gabby, however, without supervision haha! read more

I have read some of the reviews referring to the owner, i have been in the store several times where children were in there, and did not witness any rude behavior from the owner, nor other employees. The crow is skittish, and sometimes certain things get it upset. There have been some times where neighborhood kids have gone in and purposely teased the bird. Anyhow, I have been satisfied with the store, and I give it my business on a weekly basis and i have children-and when they have been in the store, no one has ever been rude to them. read more

The owner had an opportunity to educate our children about the rescue crow that makes his home in the store. The crow, Gabby, was putting on a show with quirky behaviors, sounds and gestures. Our children were being very respectful and watching in awe at this magnificent bird. The owner instead of engaging us with positive dialog, he chose to reprimand and speak to us condescendingly and our children when we were clearly there to learn. The owner had his back to us the entire time and made us feel unwelcome. As bird watchers and outdoor enthusiasts/educators, my wife and I were so disappointed at this negative experience. Birders beware and take your business elsewhere. If Craig Betts were still the owner, he would be mortified. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. I will not be back to this store because of my experience. I had purchased wind chimes for my mom for Christmas so I decided to stop in to look for Valentine gifts for my mom and MIL. I had my kids (ages 6 and 9) with me and we went to look at the crow they have in the store. We were very quiet and still, but the proprietor still felt the need to tell us in a rude voice "Gabby has had a bad day so she doesn't need any more excitement." So we walked to another part of the store to shop. The crow started cawing and the proprietor yelled at us: "His coat is bothering her!" referring to my son's coat that he had taken off and was carrying. He was not doing anything to bother the crow, he had his coat in his arms. I then decided that if we were disturbing the damn bird that much, we should probably leave immediately and not spend our money there. I like supporting local businesses but not when I don't feel welcome in the store! We will not be back. read more

I love this store. I get high quality bird seed and mixes, unlike what you can buy at Walmart. Years ago I assisted on a bird seed study with Dr. Geis. Birds like certain types of seed and quality does matter. Also, my customer experience is very different here from what I can get at Walmart. I was unable to leave my dying Mother and she loved watching the birds at the feeders outside my home. I was able to call Steve and place an order over the phone, pay for it and have it ready for pick up by a friend. You can't get that type of service at most places. read more

I had a similar encounter as most of you as it pertains to the "owner" being rude and making comments about my children. Never saw a business owner so anti-children. This was several years ago too, but I was looking for a squirrel guard and I thought I might give his store another shot. After reading the recent reviews, I will not return, because I see he has not changed. I will make a trip, out of my way, to Woodbridge, where they are kind to those with kids. The other day I took my girls to see Abby and I thought I would buy some bird seed. I started looking at the bird feeders. Immediately, I was yelled at by a gentlemen (older, short hair, grayish, thin) about touching one of the bird feeders that spins to ward off squirels. I was a bit shocked and speachless, I quitely turned and asked my two young girls to leave. As they asked why we would not get any bird feed, I just said quitely that I don't feel like spending our money with someone who is rude. If the bird feeder is causing that much anguish then take out the batteries if other customers have touched it and caused you concern. Or better yet, put a sign on it to warn others not to touch. There are better ways of speaking to your customers. As I told my two little girls, I will choose not to spend my money...I have a better interaction with amazon or ebay. read more

Besides selling "everything bird," from books to high quality seed to gift items for even the non-birder, Steve, the owner, is a walking encyclopedia of bird knowledge. Even though we don't visit his store that often, having found a much closer supplier, he still has provided advice and creative solutions by phone. And if he doesn't know the answer off the top of his head, he'll look it up. I just bought pair of binoculars from him plus a terrific book I hadn't seen elsewhere. They also have a nice discount program: spend some bucks and get some bird bucks back to spend at the store. The rest of the staff is as friendly as Steve. read more

Such a disappointing experience. I went there today with my 2-year-old daughter who was very excited to see Gabby again. We were there for about 3-4 minutes, quietly watching Gabby play in her cage. I was holding my daughter approximately 4ft from the cage. She was not yelling, touching the cage or doing anything that would upset the bird, but the gentleman behind the counter (older, gray hair) abruptly said we had to leave. I didn't understand why and didn't ask any questions since I was with my little one and didn't want her to get sad that we were leaving so quickly. So very disappointing. He may know a lot about birds, but his people skills are below zero. I will be spending my money elsewhere, going forward. read more
