Visiting from Southern California , wanted to see if BBQ was any good down here and was left disappointed . Customer service was good no problem there , food was terrible . Like I never throw food away and I threw most of it out. Maybe the food in California has more salt or seasoning or whatever but this was so bland. Catfish was ok at best. Country fries bland as heck. Mac and cheese was watery and tasted weird. Fudge pie seemed store bought or something . My husband & I went on a Friday night around 6:30 it was extremely busy and had to wait probably 20 to 30 minutes for a table. This was our first visit. This place is a true delight. So much charm and character! Bring your cash as they don't take credit cards! And snag a seat to enjoy kind service and quality food. Nestled adjacent to the city's historic African American neighborhood, Top Hog can be difficult to find for those unaccustomed to Gallatin but it is worth the effort. The pork sandwich is big, juicy, full of flavor, amazing. But this place also has one of the best catfish sandwiches around. If you are hungry, get both! Prices are very reasonable and service is friendly. Take out is available, which is what we used yesterday. Some limited outside seating. The business is cash only, has always been that way. We invented ATMs so places like Top Hog can stay traditional. Plenty of parking but at lunch it can be busy. read more

Ribs made fresh, place was constantly abuzz. We arrived after lunch rush around 1:30 and initially were told they were out of ribs and wouldn't have anymore until 4pm. They had some afterall and they were excellent. Meat fell right off the bone. I enjoyed the mac n cheese, though it was simple and didn't taste quite as homemade as the rest of the meal...Kraft was that you? BBQ sauce was vinegar based, so just be aware if that's not your style. It did upset my stomach later in the day. Could've also been from chugging the quart of water they serve you in mason jars. All in all, lunch was reasonably priced and good. Would be willing to go back and just get the BBQ BUT my absolute favorite part of lunch was the cherry cobbler dessert of the day. Hands done it was the best part of the meal and so stinkin good. Warm, fresh, with a scoop of real vanilla ice cream on the side, and a small scoop, so it didn't drown the cobbler. There was macaroni, but not really any cheese other than whatever cheese water was at the bottom of the cup. I could fill a shot glass with it. Baked beans were overwhelming with onions, the first bite was more reminiscent of cucumber salad something else that tastes like raw onion. It is located in a rough looking area but don't let that stop you. No alcohol is served which is fine with me. The fruit tea is perfect! I had cornbread cakes which were delicious with Cole slaw, white beans (with cut up onions) and fried catfish. My wife had BBQ with turnip greens and country fries. By far the best old country cooking you're gonna get on this side of town. I recommend the baked beans, never had anything like them. They do take cash only so get your checkbook out but they're so sweet and so nice. It's always packed to the nine but they do to go orders so that's my preferred way. The owner is amazing. She's so lovely and works there every single day so she deserves your hard earned dollars. The ambience is like going back to my granny's house.
