I went to the business on Alpine. I purchased a puppy. There were three young and unexperienced girls there. They were about to close and we were in a hurry when I picked out my puppy. I already had a service dog because I have been diagnosed with severe depression, PTSD and anxiety, since my son passed away. I went there, thinking it would be a good thing to give my service dog a companion. As I was signing the papers, I should've read through the fine print. But, I didn't, and I just verbally asked the girl about a refund policy if the puppy didn't get along with my service dog I already had. Megan, who is now a confirmed liar told me that I had 48 hours if things didn't work out and I would get half my money back. Well, my service dog didn't like another dog being around, and as much as I needed her (my service dog), she stopped paying attention to me. I went to take the puppy back and was told that I wouldn't get anything back for him. I was blatantly lied to and treated like I was the one that was lying!!!!! From what I saw today when I really took a look around. It's like a retail puppy mill. The dogs are put in playpens, several together. They play together, but they also defecate and urinate on each other. There was no food or water in the dog pens. Please stay away from this place and find reputable breeder. Reputable breeders do not sell to pet stores or over the internet. If you can't see the Mom dog and visit where the puppy was born, it's a puppy mill. Reputable breeders are proud of their animals and care where they go. "Wait until 8" is also a good rule of thumb. Puppies are cute when they're tiny. Just because they're done nursing, doesn't mean they're ready to go. They need to be socialized with Mom and littermates. Selling puppies too young makes them harder to housebreak. It also makes for behavior problems. Pups learn that if they bite, they get bit back by Mom or littermates. While most puppies have parasites, giardia and coccidia are horrible and really hard to beat. Finally Labradoodles. Goldendoodles, etc. are designer mutts. The AKC recognizes 197 breeds. If you want a specific breed, do your research. I've been rescuing for over 40 years. I can tell you horror stories. Not all shelter dogs are mutts. Rescues exist for every breed. Posting about my experience with buying a dog here. The pictures are of my 4,000 "purebred corgi." He's obviously not a purebred corgi (but he's sweetest and we love him regardless). We clearly got scammed, I'm not sure who's paying 4,000 for any pure bred puppy anyway... when we took him home he was so sick. We took him to the vet immediately because of the DISGUSTING conditions we just took him out of. He was covered in pee and fecal matter, I know we bought him but we still like to think we rescued him. If you have seen that place, those puppies desperately need to be rescued but I deeply regret supporting them with my money. Anyway, he clearly wasn't getting any medical care at that place. After adopting him they wouldn't let us take him home for a few day days because "vaccines" but he was so ill he clearly wasn't receiving any medical care. We were told by our own vet it was kennel cough, and giardia. This was no surprise as they were so crammed into the cages and walking around in their own excrement. His giardia was antibiotic resistant and his treatment lasted for the first 3-4 months of his life. He never grew to full size as he literally grew up on antibiotics. His medical records from BB had no indication of any treatment for either of these, or that it was even identified.This medical care alone came out to be over $10,000. He was taking three pills a day along with a probiotic with every meal, only chicken and rice... for every single meal. The vet bill was one thing but the damage to our home from the vomiting and (bloody) diarrhea was another $15,000. The medical issues we're coupled with behavioral problems, as he was constantly in small crates with other puppies never receiving basic care or training from vets or any professionals. They treat their animals like disposable waste, in the end they are a source of income they are not seen as living breathing animals worthy of love, care, and RESPECT. All of these concerns were related to BB with no concern. They claim they will reimburse for vet bills but that is absolutely not the case. In the end, we love our sweet boy but this place should absolutely be shut down. No person or animal should have to experience this HELL. read more

Not only does he have kennel cough, but he was also positive for giardia when they tested the stool sample I provided them. He is 9 weeks now and only 4.8 lbs (average weight at 2 months should be 9-12 lbs). I figured he would start to gain weight once he was adapted to being in his new home but turns out he was just sick and that's why he hasn't had much interest in his food. In the future I will be going to a reputable breeder and NOT a place like the barking boutique. For the amount we paid for him I am extremely disappointed in the way they claimed his health was great. You can see in the picture just how skinny he is. My wife and I went in on a whim after lunch. The employees were attentive to both the animals, and potential customers. I don't know anything about the overall business practices. To my surprise after 14+ months of searching, I finally found a Golden Retriever "up for adoption" in Grand Rapids. I called and asked if I could see her, they said yes I absolutely could, so I got the address and went right away. Little did I know I was driving right to a pet store....not somewhere I could *adopt* a dog. When I walked in there were at least 25-30+ puppies in tiny little clear, round enclosures. I asked directly why in the world they'd mark this Golden as "up for adoption" when she was clearly from a breeder and there to be SOLD. Not adopted. The girl told me to at least say hi to her, which I obviously could never refuse. She picked her up and the poor puppy was absolutely *filthy.* covered in urine spots and big spots on the sides of her legs with dried poop. I was told her "pen friend was a circle pooper," but you don't get that filth in a matter of a few hours. These people should be so ashamed of themselves. Those poor dogs are living in absolutely disgusting conditions, and the people who work there clearly do not give a s*it. I truly hope you get shut down. However, establishments such as this are a big part of ongoing puppy mill operations all over the US. I inquired on a puppy just to get background information more than anything on where they are sourced. I was told this puppy came from Shadow Valley Kennels in Bloomfield, IL. After researching it was noted this is one of the largest puppy mill operations in the state of Iowa that appears to be Amish owned. They outsource their puppies to pet stores etc. I was horrified to see the number of dogs on this report from this facility (#34 on the list). So incredibly sad and unfortunately this will continue to be an issue with places like The Barking Boutique funding their operation. The customer service was basic, very transactional. The well being of these animals is not taken into account. My puppy is sick from hopefully just kennel cough but to find out if she has pneumonia also was $300 more so hopefully just that. Who knows how long she has been sick since she was at their establishment for 2 months, she's only 4 months old. She has frequent cough attacks, you can hear how much her throat hurts. Dry nose, when she sneezes snot comes out, she wheezes. I knew right away I needed to take her home, get her to the hospital and put on some antibiotics. I noticed this was greatly needed after only 1 day with her and she's been with them for MONTHS. This is unacceptable, this is so unfortunate, heartbreaking, and so unfair to these puppies. What standards and policies are in place for these workers taking care of these animals?! I saw on her vaccine record they do not vaccinate for kennel cough or those kinds of illnesses as a preventative, but yet are advertising healthy puppies?! They clearly don't care if these puppies are sick they just want them adopted for the pay check so that the new owners can also foot the medical bill. It was so obvious when we got her home and paid more attention that this puppy was in desperate need of medical attention. They say on the website that the puppies are healthy but if she is this sick and was in a play pen with 4 other puppies then those ones are sick too. That is negligence at the very least. I pray to god that one day places like these are shut done for the sake of the puppy parents and their puppies taken away from them too soon to be used for profit. First impressions were good with puppies in visible open pens and attendants constantly keeping the pens clean with baby blankets. Manager was helpful and friendly with getting the puppy ready. The Aussiepoo puppy was with a couple of larger pups that were dominating the other 4 in the pen. The rough play was continued with our introduction to him. He pulled on sweaters gloves coats and pants. I believe this rough house play is a result of the too many puppies in a pen and they number of visitors each puppy receives. My concerns of this puppy adoption were unlearning his bad pulling habits. After playtime with the 'purebred' dog, the asking adoption fee was $3200. Double the price what I expected, but not disclosed until after meeting your dog. The attendant must be used to this response and moved onto another customer. Initially business idea appeared good but execution was off. Felt like a puppy mill customer after the visit. read more

The concept of offering purebred dogs from breeders where people can visit and buy them in one place sounds good. However, we found so many red flags: - puppies are cooped up in tiny pens. I think there were five employees who walked around constantly cleaning up puppy messes. Sometimes they missed and the dogs had to get baths and scrub out the entire "pen." Each pen had 2-4 dogs in it and they are tiny spaces. Really, really tiny. - we got to "meet" a few of the puppies and all except one were not socialized at all. They just hid in the corners or ran from end to end of the little meeting room but completely ignored us. - there is NO WAY many of these dogs are purebred. Just looking at them, their fur colors, ears, eyes, fur texture etc does not match a typical dog for their breed. - when we asked for the breeder info on one dog, we were shown the info briefly and told we could have it if we bought the dog. We tried to remember the name to Google it, but we could never find it online. It was from out of state though. When we looked up their breeders listed on the website, we found articles noting that many of those breeders were suspected Amish puppy mills in other states. - we were told that there was a one year guarantee for reimbursement on congenital or hereditary defects. But...if we subscribed to their dog food subscription plan, they would extend that guarantee for five years (?!) - they put "SOLD" in big letters on one of the pens for a puppy. That just rubs me the wrong way. It should be adopted. Yes you pay a fee, but it's not a sweater or a car. It just felt wrong and clearly speaks to their treatment of this as a business. - the employee told us that they advise all pet owners to take the puppy to their own vet within x number of days and then proceeded to list off a laundry list of possible ailments that were "normal" for puppies to have and can just be cause by "the stress of moving." why do they think so many of their puppies will be sick when you take them home? read more

10/7/2022 - edited to add: After commenting on all of their social media posts about their puppy mill dogs and the fact that they weren't holding up their end of their sick puppy contract, filing a claim with the BBB and consulting with an attorney for breach of contract on their end, they finally reimbursed us for the vet expenses. However, they also deleted all of my comments and took away my capability to comment on any of their posts, so I can't amend my comment that I was indeed finally reimbursed. I stand by my opinion that people need to RUN away from this place. -------------------------------------------- We got our puppy, Diggs, from Barking Boutique in July 2022. 24 hours after bringing him home, we called them because we were concerned he had diarrhea - they said it was likely just a nervous tummy from being in his new surroundings, which sounded entirely plausible. 48 hours after bringing him home, the diarrhea started having blood in it. So off to the vet we went with him. They tested him for Giardia which was positive. I remembered them talking a lot about their "two week puppy health guarantee", so I went back and looked over the paperwork. They do have a guarantee, but it's not so much of a guarantee at all. They "guarantee" their dogs will be free of any illnesses (like parvo, or giardia) for the first two weeks, but if they DO have something like that, they only pay for the meds. They will not pay for the vet visit or diagnostic testing (which, in our case, added up to $600). So.. it's a "we guarantee our dogs are healthy, but if they're not.. oh well!". To add insult to injury, we have been trying to be refunded for the two rounds of antibiotics it took to clear up his Giardia (as per their contract), and they completely stopped communicating with us. It is now the end of September, and it's been basically radio silence on their end. They also have a really effective spiel they tell people about how they ONLY use reputable breeders, all of their breeders are on their website, and they personally pick the puppies up to see what kind of living conditions they have. However, our breeder was not disclosed to us at the time of purchase (conveniently that paperwork wasn't available) and once we got it, a quick Google search of the breeder showed it's a gentleman who is in some legal trouble for running, you guessed it, A PUPPY MILL. Do not just walk away from this place.. RUN away from this place. I can't wait until they're inevitably shut down sooner than later. read more

I bought a Yorkie from the Barking Boutique in Grandville on October 19th. ..... I had no idea how horrible this place was until he started vomiting two days later and couldn't stand on his own. He needed to be hospitalized for four days after they diagnosed pneumonia. He was only 2 lbs and had to also fight an infection causing him to be anemic! The store won't cover any anything! They actually asked me to surrender the dog back to them to "get his blood sugar up and then give him back to me for his respiratory issues!" Are you kidding me? Like I'll ever give him back to them! This place is so shady and is selling sick puppies!!! Medical expenses for Boston will be around $7,000 and they won't cover anything! The general Manager Sheila is AMAZING. She went above and beyond to give me good customer service when I had an issue with a puppy I bought from them. For unknown reasons the puppy I bought refused to eat which resulted in an emergency. For two weeks Sheila went beyond her responsibilities as a manager to try to help me and the pup in any way that we could think of. She was 100% transparent with me and I have so much respect for her for it. I decided it was best to return the little guy due to his health, but the barking boutique stood behind their warranties and not only fully refunded my cost for the dog but also covered 100% of the vet bill. I was so satisfied with their customer service that I ended up buying a different puppy from them a week later and this one has been great. Our new puppy is perfectly healthy and the whole family adores her. I'm only taking off one star because the prices are seriously, ridiculously high, even for everything that is included. I understand they have to make a profit, but that high of a mark up can not be justified. read more

I didn't have any complaints about the dogs at first,mine is healthy so far. His tail was not cropped properly and it does look like they were planning on making it shorter but some how it didn't end up that way. He has an indent in the first inch of his tail but it is probably 3 inches long. I have now changed my opinion on if they are puppy mill puppies, for the main fact is that if I google the address of the breeder and the address, of my dog, nothing shows up. If I google my address my house shows up. Why wouldn't a breeder want to be found if he was a legit breeder. This alone is questionable. If you pay cash at barking boutique you won't have a problem. But they are very deceptive on their leasing practices. Was told it was one company( was told it was cordova and never did hear that name again) and there were no complaints on that one, but there was on the one that I ended up really having. If you google Monterey Financial you will see no good remarks at all. I have a college education. I thought I asked all the right questions. People can always interpret things in more than one way and they are good in making it sound like it is a good thing. IT'S NOT. You end up paying twice as much as you paid for the dog. I financed $1625 . Will end up paying $4200 in 2 years. Which you don't find out until you go on there website. I was told that if I didn't pay it off till the end of the term I would have paid $2992 for my dog, so I'd be better off paying it off as soon as I could. In 2 months after buying my dog I owed $2100 that was after I paid $600 on him already. There is no such thing as transparency at barking Boutique. Only deception. They do give you a paper that states that it is a lease with things highlighted(In Orange), But if you read it you can interpret it in more than one way. I was shown a paper when I was signing papers with a highlighted(In Blue) total of $1000 less than what was on the paper I received. I will also add, they go through the process of paperwork pretty fast. So you really only get part of the facts. I have since paid my dog off early. Four months after my purchase. I paid over $2000 in interest in that four months. That is more than I paid for my dog. Please Google Monterey Financial before leasing. I've grown up raising puppies with my neighbors and there is a rule where you have to be 18 just to hold them. I drove half an hour to not even be able to hold a puppy. While I was updating him on all the news on our forever puppy, he handed me a bag of pumpkin flavored teething rings for my puppy just to help out! I thought that was so sweet of him and he also gave my little Charlie a couple treats that looks like cookies with frosting on it!!!! BOY WAS HE SPOILED!!! I love going into the barking boutique just check out some of the new pops and check in with our beautiful Charlie that we got to see show them how BIG HE is getting! It is always spic and span there and smells like cleaning products these dogs are in a beautiful atmosphere with very caring and loving staff!!!!! Great store with highly knowledgeable and trained staff. They have transparent information on where every dog comes from and every dog sees the vet multiple times! These dogs are clearly well taken care of and loved! They won't even let you wake a sleeping puppy to make sure they are getting adequate down time.
