The combination of the historic charm and the snowy landscape made it even more special. Our stay included a continental breakfast, but don't let that description fool you -- this was anything but ordinary. They offered made-to-order omelettes, eggs cooked any style you like, crispy bacon, home fries... it was a full, hot, delicious breakfast and such a treat! The birthday party was held in another building on the property called The Dairy, and it is absolutely beautiful. The Dairy can accommodate up to six guest rooms and features a large living area, a spacious dining area, and a fully equipped kitchen, along with an outdoor deck. It's perfect for gatherings and special celebrations -- private, cozy, and thoughtfully designed. With all the snow, my car just wasn't cooperating. Although the grounds were well plowed, I couldn't make it up the hill. Once again, the staff went above and beyond -- they graciously drove us up to The Dairy so we wouldn't miss a thing. That level of service really stood out. Unfortunately, for a special anniversary stay separate from any party, it was not the relaxing getaway we had hoped to have. The property is indeed beautiful. We walked around a bit hoping to enjoy the "trails" on their property map, but they weren't well marked. When we thought we were on a trail, it would abruptly end in lawn. The staff is friendly, but seemed a little disorganized. We called to confirm our reservation earlier that day and they couldn't find it, so we made another one for a more expensive room since our original choice wasn't available. But when we checked in they gave us our original, smaller room under a reservation that was still there. To their credit, they did fix it so we were not charged for two reservations, and we chose the larger room after all. Our room was in the Pack House. It was airy with a high ceiling and comfortable bed, a mini fridge, and a balcony shared with the room next door. The DirectTV and A/C wall unit were a little clunky to operate, but workable. The main issue for us was the noise because there was a party room downstairs. There are quiet hours posted from 11 pm to 7 am - and not long after 7 am (on a Saturday morning!) there was loud music that ruined our morning. My guess is it was early morning wedding prep, and it was technically not breaking quiet hours, but unwelcome for us "outsiders" nonetheless. On the brighter side, breakfast was included in our rate and was very good. In addition to light fare of pastries, fruit, and yogurt in a small buffet, we got to pick an entree from a large menu of options. Our entrees were simple, but good. Check out was easy and I was asked if I wanted a printout or email. I requested email, and over 24 hours later I still haven't received it. This is a pretty good reflection of our experience: promises that were not quite delivered, leaving us mostly disappointed, especially for the cost. If you are not part of a wedding or event, I would not stay here unless you are okay with disruptions.

It would be too lengthy to try to describe each dish but all but one ( the Larchmont Farm Nectarine) was extraordinary. There is a very small cocktail/wine list now. The most expensive wine being around $50 or so. If you BYO, there is a $25 corkage fee. All the staff were very friendly and informed and described each dish as it was presented. Most of the tables were full the entire night. Not an inexpensive meal but we will return and most likely just order from the regular menu.

The wines were perfectly paired and we really enjoyed them all. The Nizzi Barbera was notable. Service was great and Gail was excellent providing history and explanations of all the wines. Here, you'll find the lobby. Three staff were behind computers checking in guests. Only waiting two minutes, I was up and within minutes, I was in my room. The staff member helping me was delightful and speedy. 2) Rooms: My room on the fifth floor came with a kid bed. It was comfortable, and they left four pillows on it. The room came with a desk, a couch with a table, a TV, ample closet space, and a restroom with the shower separate from the toilet. They provide water bottles in the room. There's a fridge to cool them in. If you're like me, it may be hard to find the ironing board. Push open the mirror door by the closet. 3) Space: The hotel is modern, art-forward, and comes with a bar/restaurant, a little food market, an ATM, and 24/7 fitness center on the third floor. 4) Location: It's centrally located with many restaurants, shops, and bars nearby. Many of the tourist spots are close. If the weather is nice, walk a few blocks to Rittenhouse Square Park for live music and more.

The front desk offered little assistance and essentially told us there was nothing they could do. Strangely, just minutes later they were suddenly able to find us a room and offered a suite upgrade, although that room was not yet available. Around 3:30 PM we were finally given access to a room, only to discover that it smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. The couch was pulled out into a bed, drawers were left open, and the room looked as though a previous guest was still occupying it or housekeeping had not finished preparing it. The one bright spot in our experience was a very kind and attentive bellman. He immediately recognized our frustration, contacted the front desk on our behalf, and within minutes our suite upgrade was ready. What had previously seemed impossible was suddenly resolved in less than ten minutes. He was by far the most helpful member of the staff we encountered during our stay. While the suite was certainly nicer, the hotel itself feels dated. The age of the property is evident throughout the rooms, and in our opinion, it does not live up to its reputation as a five-star luxury hotel. We would rate it closer to a four-star property, perhaps even a 3.5-star experience based on the service, room quality, and overall operation. Adding to our disappointment, we dined at Lacroix and found the food to be well below what we would expect from a hotel of this caliber and price point. The delays and room issues created unnecessary stress, especially since we had dinner reservations at 4:30 PM and were already pressed for time. For the rates charged by The Rittenhouse, we expected a seamless luxury experience and received anything but. Overall, we were disappointed with both the service and the quality of the property. We will not be returning and would choose the Four Seasons for future visits to Philadelphia. At this price point, there are simply better options available.

Throughout the weekend, there was a lack of professionalism, communication, and urgency in addressing problems. The guest accommodations had no hot water, plumbing issues, and a toilet that would not flush. When concerns were brought to Trisha's attention, we were met with comments like, "Ugh, this is my life," rather than solutions. The bridal suite was equally disappointing. The water smelled strongly of sulfur, making the tub unusable for the bride and groom on their wedding night. The air conditioning was not working, and although Trisha was informed the night before, it was still not fixed the next morning. At 7:00 a.m. on the wedding day, I texted her to let her know it still wasn't working and received no response. This was a 90+ degree June day, and fifteen women were trying to get ready in the bridal suite without air conditioning. On the morning of her wedding, my daughter was told that dogs were not allowed in the bridal suite, despite us being told during our initial tour that dogs were welcome. After the ceremony, Trisha told the bride and groom that the groomsmen's belongings had been locked away and needed to be collected, pulling them away from their guests. She also told them it was "the worst wedding she had ever hosted," which is something no couple should ever hear on their wedding day. There was also an incident in which Trisha physically grabbed our wedding coordinator's arm, dug her nails into her, and pulled her toward the parking lot. To make matters worse, I discovered an unauthorized $264.84 room charge on my credit card. Most disappointing of all was the complete lack of accountability afterward. We spoke directly with one of the owners during the wedding weekend and were promised a follow-up call the next day. Despite multiple calls and messages from both my husband and me, we never received a response. My family has been in the hospitality industry for many years. We understand that problems can happen. What matters is how they are handled. Unfortunately, based on our experience, we cannot recommend this venue.

The carpet was dingy and it definitely needs a refresh (ask for slippers). Room service came in a bag instead of on a tray, which made eating for two a little awkward. We had our two small dogs with us, and while the hotel itself is very dog-friendly (which we appreciate -- it's why we usually choose Kimptons), the immediate area really isn't. It's busy, loud, and there's no grass nearby. Rittenhouse Square is a short walk away, but when it's 12° outside, that's not exactly a practical solution. Food was average, the postcard station is super cute, and overall it feels like a solid 3-star hotel where you're paying for the location and the staff more than the room itself.
