So the forecast for my vacation to NYC was 76 and partly cloudy with a chance of rain. Cool. I'm cool with that. I live in the desert. So a relief in temps would be awesome on my vacation. Well. As an original Midwesterner, I forget how 76 and humid equals...ICK! So, for the first few days of my vacation I was adjusting to the "this humidity does a big ole don't do my do!...(as in DO...like hair do!). So I caught a ferry (later, I caught a real fairy, but that's a different story), to lower Manhattan. UGH!!! It veered north, to 42nd Street...Not a prob...I'm on vaca and will take this as a positive detour. And I did. I caught the 1 line and eventually subwayed my ass to Battery Park. Once I trounced my way through the Wall Street traffic, the thousands of tourists paying tribute at Ground Zero and the strange albino midget march, I made my way to the southern end of Manhattan. Breazy. Easy. Cool...perfect winds cooling off my otherwise muggy ass self. The tributes. The people. The feeling... mostly the feeling at Battery Park are still thick. The sadness of 9/11 still permeates the air. The views of our Lady Liberty are amazing. And my visit to Trintiy Chuch really moved this non religious person. No batteries needed at Battery Park. Thought I did have to tussle a bit at the local Starbucks to charge my iphone! But, hey, it's New York. So I cursed at an old lady hogging a plug in. At least I didn't swear at her. Oh. I am so fortunate to have grown up in this beautiful neighborhood, and now I live here as an adult. 10 years ago, taxicabs barely knew how to get here, and 5 years ago the average New Yorker only had a vague sense of where Battery Park City was ("It's near the World Trade Center"). Obviously, the neighborhood suffered a major trauma and setback with the falling of the Towers, but it has bounced back vigorously. I was in college when 9/11 happened and my mom was luckily out of town too, so we came out of it physically unscathed (emotional scars are another matter). But when I asked her if she'd consider leaving BPC because of 9/11, she answered adamantly, "No, of course not. This is our home." So yes, BPC is my home. My city within New York City. True, it doesn't have all the cool ethnic flavorings of older, more established neighborhoods, and everything pretty much shuts down by 11, but it's a great place to come home to after a long day. It's quiet at night, the streets are lined with trees, there are several parks and playgrounds throughout, and you get a perfect view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Come summer time, you can't beat taking a stroll or bike ride along the Esplanade, having a picnic on a grassy knoll or enjoying a free concert sponsored by the River to River Festival. It's like a little escape from the regular hustle & bustle of the city. These days, the Esplanade is packed with tourists, especially during the summer. Mostly runover from those checking out the former WTC site. Who would have thought that a neighborhood so beautiful could only be blocks away from a tragedy so ugly. read more

A few hours on a Friday I allocate to myself.....doing what I feel like doing....at the moment...no plans...everything on a WHIM.....I go where my mind and thoughts take me....mostly WALKING...love to walk.... I left the house pretty early...and had to pass by my Mom and dropped off some yarn to keep her mind busy ...chrocheting...Its the one thing she loves to do other than watching TV at her ripe age of 87. I hugged her and left....for the subway.... I ended up in Battery Park.....25 acres of public park located at the southern tip of Manhattan facing the New York Harbor. Nostalgia fills the air....I walked through the park.... my old neighborhood ...Great views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Exquisite Building Architecture....Staten Island Ferry...Shrine of Saint Ann Seton.....years ago ..1980 to 1991 to be exact I use to work in the Financial District.... Wall Street Area......90 Broad St....was the address of the buiilding. Spend a lot of hours just watching joggers...tourist...people walking their dogs... playing music...lovers kissing...watched the ships passing by...family picnics.....kids playing...picture taking... vendors everywhere... The Sphere...which was a large metal sculpture by a German sculptor name Franz Koenig was recovered from the rubble of the twin towers after the 9/11 attacks and is now rededicated with an eternal flame as a memorial to the victims of 9/11. It has become a tourist attraction. After walking along the promenade I stopped...sat on a bench and gazed up... There's a Void ... Where... The Twin Towers use to be... Sadness overcomes me... Once again..... Can't help the tears... And the Pain... Ma'am are you okay? A young gentleman came over me... I'll tell you a little secret about Battery Park in a bit. But first, I have to say that I truly love coming to Battery Park. For me, it's the easiest park in NYC to get to from Jersey and that's a big plus. And it's not as heavily frequented by tourists, which is the major plus for me. I have also gone to a few concerts here, like a July 4th gig with Billy Bragg and Shawn Colvin. And I also saw Ani DiFranco play here, in a big rainstorm. And recently, I saw St. Vincent play at Clinton Castle. You've got great views of the Statue of Liberty, Governors Island, and even Brooklyn, if that's your cup of tea. Okay, the little secret involving me and Battery Park: I've loved coming here since I was a kid. It's going to sound a little silly - actually a lot silly - but the reason I used to love coming here when I was a kid was because I was obsessed with "Desperately Seeking Susan". And Battery Park was where Rosanna Arquette followed Madonna to, and where she bumped her head and thought she was Susan. Now if only I could find that pyramid jacket somewhere... read more

The Battery - Parks Near Me - New York, New York

This place is neat because there is a lot of historical significance that can be found here. Just look at all the statues as you walk amongst the trees. Not too big in terms of having a picnic or anything especially when at 10am hits around and a bunch of people just congregate here wanting to go see the Statue of Liberty or just walking through for the morning lunch hour. It's good for runners too, although you just have to run through it and nothing more. Lots of photo opportunities can be found here at Battery Park. read more

One of my favorite areas in the city. I love the views of the Statue of Liberty, the boats and ships passing by and the movie theater in the area is always empty. Check out the Irish Hunger Memorial too...pretty cool spot in Battery Park City. Love this park. So convenient since I live across the street. For non-New Yorkers, BP is easily accessible from the 1,4,5, and R train. Need some workout motivation? Go to Battery Park! Battery Park is one of the oldest parks in NYC. Sitting at the tip of Manhattan Island, it has spectacular views of where the Hudson meets the East River. If you want to see a REAL waterfront view, you haven't seen one unless you've been to Battery Park City. It is definitely one of the hidden treasures of NYC (not really sure how "hidden" it is, but definitely worth taking your friends from out of town to check it out). There's a number of restaurants along this park where the World Financial Center is, but I have no idea how expensive they are...I'm sure they cost a pretty penny... While also walking along the waterfront, you'll eventually hit a United Artists theater around N.End Ave & Vesey St. I came here to see the Orphan and while killing time before the movie, we enjoyed the waterfront view :) read more

Battery Park is a neighborhood in the city, and there is a park named Battery Park in the Battery Park neighborhood. I used to live in Battery Park a block away from the park and I miss it. Whenever I would go into other parts of the city is when I would think to myself that I needed to move away from the city sooner rather than later. I'm not a big fan of the hustle and bustle of the city, but Battery Park was always more relaxed and peaceful to me, even if there were always thousands of tourists roaming around. It's just different in so many ways from the rest of the city. Visiting Battery Park you will see A TON of history there. Monuments, statues, historic sites like Clinton Castle and the last pier on the lower west side "Pier A", and it's right next to Wall Street and the WTC site. If you want a great knockoff Rolex or purse or handbag you should pass through Battery Park and make sure you don't show more than 20 bucks. They'll try to get you to buy something for much more than they are willing to take. I bought a few things while living there and never spent more than 20 bucks. The guys carrying briefcases are carrying the watches, and the guys pushing or pulling large carts have the handbags. Food around that area is terrible. The better places to eat are usually open during the weekdays when the financial district employees are around but a lot of them close pretty early. There are better food options further uptown or you can catch the PATH train or ferry over to Hoboken where they have some great pizza places there. If you're looking for good pizza in lower Manhattan don't even try, it doesn't exist. The best option in my opinion is a little bit of a walk, but it is the Whole Foods in Tribeca, and it's off the West Side Highway just a block or so north of the WTC site. Make sure you walk along the Hudson while you're there too. That is what I miss the most. The park along the river is so nice. NYC really takes great care of all their parks, especially when you compare them to other cities like D.C. and Philly. Best time to go is in the Spring or Summer. Battery Park can get cold and windy. Whatever park you stroll to in NYC you will encounter glorious views of rivers or the skyline above all the massive skyscrapers. Battery Park is just one of those parks that always helps complete a visit to NYC (especially by a first-time traveler that may not have all the time in the world to hit every site to see). You can catch a glimpse of Lady Liberty here and even catch the ferry that takes you right to the statue. It's also walking distance to the Staten Island Ferry building, where you can hitch a free ride that passes right by the Statue. It was beautiful during our last visit to Battery Park. I remember coming here with a couple of friends after a long day of sight seeing. We were sweaty, hungry, and exhausted. The last ferry had already taken off to Liberty Island, and we could see her waving in the distance like a partygoer at a rock concert holding her lighter in the air. We sat on a bench. Got kinda grossed out at the number of beetles crawling on the benches. As the sun set, we saw a few zipping green lights in the grass, first a blip, then more, until a lazer light show of lightning bugs rose up out of the lawn. Guess they weren't beetles after all. Battery Park is one of those must-go places for sightseers. You get a nice view of downtown and the Statue of Liberty. The World Trade Center and the bronze bull are just around the corner. And if you're there at the right time of year, you might even catch the light show. read more

I love going for a walk in Battery Park every night with my husband. Being from California I miss the open outdoor area and the greenery. Battery Park is a beautiful, clean park right by the water. It's a great place to just sit, relax and look out over the water. There are tons of people always jogging, biking, walking their dogs or picnicking......but it still never feels that crowded. It's always a welcome relief from the hustle bustle of NYC. Make sure to check out the events that they have, especially during the summer. My favorite is the summer concert series, which is completely free! Try the restaurants along the way such as PJ Clarkes or Shake Shack (which is just off the park). You can also visit the Irish Hunger Memorial and see the Statue of Liberty along the way. A must visit for those looking for a place to just relax and unwind! read more

I've been going here frequently this past Winter and it's actually a nice park to visit. Beside the bitter coldness you have to endure during the Winter season since its right next to the water, its a nice park to just relax. There are a few places to try out and eat at. Can't wait to spring and summer to really enjoy this place! Btw...be warned...there are a lot of rodents around in the park. One night me and my friend was just relaxing in the park and all of sudden we see like three rodents 50 feet away from us next to another bench. Then another one appeared, then another and then another, and one more appeared. They were popping out of somewhere like rabbits. A total of about 8 or 9 were there and in my head I'm thinking either they're trying to ambush when we leave the park or they think we got food. Thankfully, we didn't see them after that. read more

This is how you cross "see the Statue of Liberty" off your bucket list in a fraction of the time! I wanted to go to Ellis Island and Liberty Island on my recent trip to NYC, but we just didn't have time. It was nice, though, to go to Battery Park and see Lady Liberty and Ellis Island from a distance. We still got some distant but decent photos of those locations. Sometimes I like to walk the park after work because it helps me to clear my head and think about the highlights of my day. Spring time is the best time to be outside as the daylight is long and the sun would be still up when we get off. Summer time is great nonetheless as the lawn is in full bloom with soft green grass. There are things to see and do, and yes there is construction going on, so the park may become even more awesome than it is today. Its just so......clean and tucked away; the combination of tall, modern buildings and clusters of "everything you need": grocery store dry cleaners newstand random deli or something. Its just so different than other areas, both during the day, and during the night I really enjoy the quiet and walking around an area by myself. Of note: for smaller filmmakers out there, Battery Park City has its own authority when it comes to filming, so be sure to get permission specifically from them before hand, not from the mayor's office in midtown. read more

"About Living In Battery Park City" As I write this, I've resided in BPC for the last three years. I'm moving back to the Village in August. I've had enough of the BPC life, for this lifetime. In general, BPC is a truly world-class neighborhood. BPC can be an absolutely fabulous place to live, perhaps even permanently, for some people. And, it can be a pretty damn nice place to live, for a little while, for a few of us. (Apparently I fall into the "few of us" category). More importantly, however, If you ever do live in BPC, you need to be aware of BPC's social environment. In fact, you need to do more than simply be aware of it. Beware of it. But, the 'beware' thing relates to only part of my BPC experience. Before addressing that point, let's broaden the canvas a bit... When I first relocated to NYC (about five years ago) I needed to be near my Dad, who lived in Queens... so I lived in Queens, for about a year. And I averaged roughly one and a half round-trips to the city during that year, because I loved being in the city. I'd get questions about my frequent trips, along the lines of: "Isn't that really inconvenient for you?" And I'd answer that it was a lot less inconvenient that flying in from Austin (where I lived until moving here). Then I sublet a cool little four-floor walk-up on Third Street (near Sullivan). Just one step outside my building put me right in the middle of an abundant supply of real NYC. Fond memories of Sunday early-morning coffee retrieval excursions, with heavily littered, soured beer smelling streets giving me their familiar greeting... as I took care not to land my foot in the occasional urine stream, emanating from the occasional passed-out street person. Pure poetry. I moved to a forty-third floor luxury apartment with a panoramic water view in a luxury building in BPC, after the sublet. Huge apartment. Full kitchen. Two and a half baths. Separate shower and tub in each full bath. Uniformed doormen and concierges at the front and rear doors. Maintenance staff on duty early 'til late. Gym. Pool. Valet service. Parking garage (also valet). Building intercom system. Washers and dryers on every floor. Garbage chutes. Recycling program. Multiple, daily FedEx pick-ups at the front desk. Etcetera. At first I was in major culture shock. And it lasted a while. I moved there for two primary reasons: 1.) I got a sweet deal involving a roommate, who already had an extended lease at a good rate; and 2.) I fell in love with the view immediately. And I still love the view. Every day I want to see it, practically up in the clouds as I watch, I can see sun set behind the river. I've never taken that for granted, and that's what I'll miss far more than anything else about BPC. You know, it's funny, because people still ask me why I live in a place so remote from the real Manhattan. "Yeah but you have to catch a train or a cab to go anywhere" they'll say, and then ask, "Isn't that inconvenient?" And I reply, "Not as inconvenient as taking the train in from Queens every day." One of the first things my BPC roommate told me was to be careful in my interactions with BPC residents. She said it's like a small town, people gossip, they're judgmental, it's not uncommon for them to band together and ostracize someone... and stuff like that. She made the very salient point that, regardless of my opinion toward any of it, being critically observed and ultimately evaluated by the neighborhood was inevitable... and an unfavorable assessment would add certain and consistent unpleasantness to my BPC existence. I passed-off her advice as probably just being a 'girl thing.' I figured she must have gotten mixed-up in a neighborhood game of gossip and side-choosing, and came out on the bad end of it. And, of course, it turns-out that she knew what she was talking about. BPC is not like "Manhattan." It's more like Mayberry. But, like I said, that's just part of the equation. And, overall, there are a lot of cool and interesting people in Mayberry. Just remember that's where you are, if you get involved in the local scene. One last thing I'd like to mention is the downtown express buses. They're the smaller (more comfortable), airport shuttle types of buses. They run regularly, all around Lower Manhattan. You can catch one at South End and Rector Place, and be at the Seaport in 5 minutes. PS: My rating for BPC (as a place to live) is actually 3.5 stars. What a great place to re-charge, Battery Park City! We stumbled upon this park on our way to the Shake Shack. I love that the food trucks come around here, and wished that I could stay in NYC long enough to try some of those out. I am impressed by all the benches that you can sit on and the nice pathway for bikers and joggers to use. It was neat to see people out there enjoying the beautiful day and soaking in the warm sunshine. I like all the little architectural and artistic touches along the riverwalk. How nice it must be for those working in the financial district to come and enjoy the outdoors in such tranquility. read more

Don't like sandy beaches? Well, get your tan here at Battery Park City. There is much to offer at Battery Park City, especially the summer. Take a good thick blanket/waterproof blanket for a day tanning event at Battery park City. Be free to remove the strings of your bikini to avoid stringy tan marks along your back (nudity is not advised since children are a big part of the parks). Listen to your mp3 player or read a book while you tan and enjoy the serenity of the park. You can rollerblade and take a jog around the park. A huge park with a great view of the water in southern Manhattan. It's very nice & right near the Bowling Green subway station along with quite a few ferries. The only downsides are overpriced food & people who stop in the middle of the sidewalk. There's also more shady spots here than in some places near the water. Extremely picturesque; one of those must see destinations if you're visiting NYC. read more

This is a great view of new jersey, especially at night. There is a playground for the kids and awesome walk along the waters. It is also less crowded and cleaner than many other parks! I love biking here at night and just enjoying the view! read more
