I must admit that I am not a beer connoisseur, but more of a beer apprentice. So unfortunately, I cannot fake knowing what I am talking about when it comes to beer and the selection available at this location. I will say that I did a selection and price comparison to another growler store a couple of miles away, and The Beer Growler was not only cheaper, but it offered significantly more options. The store itself is a delightful hodgepodge of eclectic interior design - owls, interesting artwork, clearly labeled tap selection on a giant blackboard. But I must say the selling point of this particular location would have to be the service. It was serviced by an all-woman staff, and as a woman, this was a very attractive quality. These girls know about beer, and it was so refreshing to see women run the place because every other growler shop I have been to have been all-male staff. One thing I am not a huge fan of is the fact that we had to pay for samples. I haven't had to do that at other growler type shops. We ended up getting the Wild Heaven, which provided a lot for the money. One of my favorite beer is the KT Bourbon - excellent, rich, and so much substance to it. This week was our first, but certainly not the last, visit to a cool beer joint with a nice selection of growler-friendly drafts and crafts. Lots of locals popping in to get their growlers filled with their favorite brews. The beer tender was very knowledgeable and super friendly. There weren't a lot of folks hanging out on a Thursday evening, mostly folks coming to fill growlers and some who grabbed a pint while waiting for the growler to be filled. It was a little warm inside the story - an outside seating area would've easily bumped this to 5 stars. In addition to the great brew offerings there's lots of beer accessories like a neoprene Groozie to keep you growler cool until you get it home, some Beer Growler apparel, and lots of beer glasses and growlers available for purchase. Our beer tender was terrific, easy to talk to, attentive, and showed commendable trade craft with her knowledge of the offerings, solid service skills, as well as the care with which she prepared and filled the customer's growlers. The Beer Growler is my go-to spot for growler refills. They have a great selection and their stuff is SO helpful and knowledgeable. I love that they have an online menu see you can check out your options before you go, but if you don't do that you can always sample a couple to see what you like. Super convenient to stop by on the way home from Your Dekalb Farmers Market. For the non beer drinkers, they also have kamboucha and usually a root beer or cream soda on tap. Having been to a bunch of growler spots in Atlanta, this one is by far the best in terms of service and selection. Tapping and changing out kegs daily, offering variety, and a magnitude of carrying apparatuses. That's about all I need. Recently picked up a growler of Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Sumpin' and loved every bit. After coming from NC, it's nice to have more simplified growlers laws readily available. Great idea for a business!! Man I wish I had came up with this idea...stupid slow brain! Imagine taking just the tap-wall area off a Tacomac and creating a place that allows you to bring in jugs to take fresh draft beer home...brilliant! I feel like a bootlegger every time I walk to my car. Wonderful beer selection with a real focus on the local brews! Something new all the time and they rotate beers often. This place is great! Great gem to have nearby. Stores like this continue to add to the resume of the Decatur area (it's actually in next door Avondale Estates) as being the hottest area for beer in the state. If you don't know how a "growler" shop works, it's pretty easy. You buy a reusable growler for $3.99, choose a draft beer, pay for it, then go home with your favorite beer on draft. They have two sizes, 32oz or 64oz, and the prices for beer range depending on how rare a particular beer might be. They also carry Abita root beer on draft. There are glasses and t-shirts for sale as well. Neat idea and a welcome addition to the area. Staff is very pleasant and helpful. Only downside, word is out and it can get busy sometimes, but worth the wait. I've become so addicted to this place, that I keep and empty growler in the car so I don't have to worry about remembering to bring one from the house. I may be developing a problem.... Combine this with a trip to the Pine Street Market next door, and you've got yourself on manly weekend lined up. read more

I'm so glad that someone found the loophole in Georgia liquor laws that allow growlers of beer to be sold. Growing up in Indiana (which oddly enough has rather restrictive liquor laws too), I could easily pick up a growler of beer from most local breweries. It usually made for a fun night of sipping on craft beers with good friends. What I like best is that you can easily switch between a 32 or 64 oz container, once you've paid the initial $3.99 deposit for the growler. If you'll just be sampling a beer yourself, I suggest go with the smaller 32 oz. growler. But if you plan on having a party or sharing your craft brew, go with the larger growler. It's definitely been a great way to try out new beers. I just only wish I could get a small sample of the beer before I select one, but I'm guessing that Georgia liquor laws would forbid this. My previous growler store closed, so I was looking for a location that (1) was convenient (2) had a great selection and (3) would fill the growlers I already had. This shop was amazing on all three counts! I was immediately impressed by their display board - they had a selection of about 40 beers. The beers were sorted by style, so it was easy to quickly see they had 3 sours to choose from (I chose all 3). For each beer they listed the ABV and prices. The staff were very friendly and simultaneously dealt with customers asking questions, requesting samples, and handing over growlers. They worked quickly and checked in with everyone for us to know if we were next up (etc). I particularly like the cute tags they affix to the growlers! The checkout process was very fast. They seem to have a policy that if the keg "kicks" before your growler is full, they will give you what beer you got for free. While it is sad to have your heart on something and not get (all of) it, it is nice to get some free beer! I swing by the area frequently to pick up comics, so I expect that I will keep using this shop. They had a nice selection of growler bottles, so if mine break (or I want a different size), I will be happy to pick up some glass here as well. read more

Saw a sign for this while driving down N Avondale Rd. Was very interested by it had to look it up to see what it was about went back later that day. You purchase your "Growler" for $3.99 and they fill it with the draft craft beer of your choice to bring home and enjoy. Love the concept. They have 2 sizes and you bring the growler back they sterilize it and fill it again with your choice of beer. We tried the Lost Abbey and the Ludwig both excellent. We also got some Abita root beer to bring home as a special treat for the kids. Will return I am giving it 4 star because feel they lacked the customer service with a concept that is new like this to Atlanta feel they should guide you through the process of how it works I had to ask a lot of questions. I was familiar with most of the 40 + beers on tap and like to seek out new beers & like to know the descriptions and origins the guy finally gave me a list of there beers and there characteristics after I asked if they had such a thing. read more

What an awesome growler shop. Avondale Estates is a little out of the way but it's right around the corner from Decatur, which is a town that truly loves it's beer. It makes sense. The selection here is great. They rotate 40 taps as of 10/2012 and do a great job of carrying a variety of styles. My personal favorite style (sour ale/flemish sour) is vastly underrepresented in most stores, but I was told they always have at least one on tap here. There were 4 this week (!) and hopefully that trend will continue. I had a chance to spend a little time talking to the owner last time I was here and you can tell that he is very passionate about what he's doing. The store itself is very straightforward. They don't stock a lot of merchandise and accessories like other stores. You can buy glasses, growlers and beer. End of story. The pricing seems very competitive. It's cheaper than some growler stores around town, but I would be hard pressed to call it the cheapest. All in all, for the rarity of some beers and the sheer variety I feel like they are dollars well spent, and will certainly keep driving my happy ass out to Avondale Estates until they open shop closer to me. read more

The Beer Growler just opened in Avondale Estates...been driving by and saw the sign for a while. They were literally still setting up things today when i walked in. They have a nice selection of beer and ciders, more than enough for a lightweight like me and enough local and import that i can get a different one each time for while. You pay about $4 for the jug, once, then you bring it back and they give you a sterilized one each time and fill it with your choice of beer on tap. Pretty awesome, very friendly and helpful owners... I'm giving it 5 stars now based on the customer service, location, store appearance and choice of beers according to my tastes (lightweight). The Beer Growler is a place I will drive out of my way to visit. I haven't quite figured out if it's the cheapest way to buy beer (I don't think the math works out that way), but I have figured out that it might be the best way to buy beer. I prefer darker shouts with a lot of flavors but not a lot of bitterness. I tried the Duck Rabbit Milk Stout for the holidays and thought it might be the best beer I've ever had. Perhaps having the boutique beers on tap improves them even more..... The $3.99 growler is built to last and keeps your beer safe for long transport. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and attractive and you can get in and out in a hurry if you know what you want. There are plenty of selections and they update them on the website frequently so you don't get there after previewing and it not be available. Heavy gravity beers seem to be their specialty and these are premium beers, so be prepared to pay for the quality you are receiving. Yes! Yes! I don't know why it took me so long to get to this place, but I love it. You walk in and you're slammed (not literally of course) with a huge blackboard of all the sodas, ciders, and beers they have on tap. Tastings are offered and you can try beers from all over! From Green Flash Brewing to Six Point Brewing, they have plenty of choices. The rest of the store is filled with growlers and glasses for your drinking fancy. I think what makes this place amazing is the service. I was incredibly indecisive and they were never pushy and willing to chat about beers and breweries. Three people were working that day and all 3 were incredibly friendly. They somehow make you feel good about filling a growler with beer. I can get behind that. read more

Being from out of the area, I followed the advice of a friend to check out Sweetwater Brewing. Unbeknownst to me, you can't buy or taste beer there (outside of the regulated times), so I was on the search for a good taste of some local beer. Found the beer growler on yelp, and was on my way. The girl working the counter was knowledgeable, and helped me to find Wild Heaven's Ode to Mercy brown ale, which was delicious. I was to happy to have a full growler, but sad that I couldn't enjoy a pint in the store/bar. That's the only reason for the 4-star, and not 5. I absolutely plan on returning! read more

Fantastic. My girlfriend saw this place the other day and, being fans of Da Beer, we decided to go check it out. The guys working there proved to be very knowledgeable about their product, and pretty friendly as well. The deal works like this: You pay $3.99 for a bottle (or "growler"), which can be either 32- or 64-oz., whichever you want. You then pay to fill that bottle with your choice from among probably 50 beers or more. When you come back with the empty, you just trade in your growler for a new one, at no cost (and you can switch from 32- to 64-oz. jugs freely each time - it makes no difference to them), and then order your next beer choice. Not sure whether this is a fad that will last or if it's going to be short-lived, but it's fantastic to have the opportunity to get large bottles of beers you might not have tried before without having to go to a specialty beer bar or ordering a case online or something (only to find out, maybe, that you might not like the beer you just ordered). This is such a great place, great concept, and thank goodness the old blue laws in Georgia are finally changing! I recently finished with some interior painting and felt bushed, so I figured it was time to get some beer and appreciate my handiwork. Their website showed the beers they had that Sunday, and that they were open till 6 (I called to make sure), and wow! I took both of our growlers over, using the 32 oz. for some delicious Irish Cider (I think the name is Magner's?) for myself, and a slightly deeper stout for hubby. Imagine my surprise when I was able to sample both! I guess this is a new feature and I don't mind shelling out $1 per taste. Better that than getting home and realizing you don't like the beer. And for customer service, I was in more recently and didn't really know what I wanted. I asked for a couple of pours, and as the counter was pretty busy I took my samples and sampled them by walking around the store admiring the decor. The woman working at the counter actually complemented me in front of the other customers and her co-workers by saying "She knows how to sample beer. She's taking her time to taste it and find out if she likes it." Here I thought I was just staying out of her way so that she could wait on customers who knew what they wanted! It looks like this business has been open for almost 3 years. May it be open many, many more years to come! read more

Last weekend my oldest daughter got married at a venue close by in Avondale. I had purchased two Newcastle Brown kegs from a distributor who assured me the tap was an American "D" style tap. Two hours before the event we try to tap the first keg and no beer! I live 30 miles East of Atlanta so I lookup "home brewing supplies near me" and find this place. In a panic I call them and explain the situation. I am advised that the manufacturer is Heineken and the keg has an "S" type tap. I rush up to buy a tap and since I only need one for a day or two they loan it to me! The knowledgeable staff here really saved my bacon! Although I usually buy only kegs now, my mother-in-law lives in Avondale and I will definitely be stopping in every time I am in the area! I wish I could give you 10 stars!!! read more

Wow Huge selection of beers on tap, all for your growler filling pleasure. Usually pretty quick in and out. They have a pretty good system working, which is great because unplanned growler lines can be pretty annoying. But they got it right. also it is pretty cool that you feel like you are saddling up to a bar when you grab your to-go. The only downside is they don't have bottled beverages to grab. I only mention that because when I am out w/o my growler, I can't just swing by for a 6-pack and take advantage of their great selection. read more

By far the best (and consistent) customer service around. They have an excellent beer selection, and they are really cool to their customers. One time, we forgot our grower, and they loaned us one at no charge. Also, during the "snowpocalypse" 2013' they were the only place in Avondale who gladly stayed open. Love this place and their terrific staff. Great selection of microbrews (though by law you can't taste it in the store). The selections change so it never gets stale and a nice surprise is the root beer!
