A nice little restaurant/pub for some good eatin' and just getting out of the house for a nice meal that doesn't leave a pile of dishes waiting for you at the end of it. There are enough options on the menu for a fair minded person to find something to enjoy. It is kid friendly and they've got a little menu for the little ones that covers the basics for any picky (predictable) eaters. The "parking lot" can get a little messy and difficult to navigate depending upon the crowd and their considerations for other people's cars/needs, but I usually find my way to the fringes and avoid getting parked in by the less considerate among the customers. read more

8 of us came in and everyone was happy with their dinner. I had the trout almandine. The fish was perfectly tender but flavor was just a little bland. It needed a little something something. Not sure what but something to bring the almond flavor out. For desert I had the brownie sunday. It is by far the best brownie sunday I ever had!!!!!!!! (and i eat a lot of brownie sundays). This is the worst (or no service) I have gotten in a very long time. I made a reservation and arrived on time. When I got there another group just got there so there were only 2 tables on the deck (including me) and one in the main part of the inside. While the table behind me got drink orders and food orders I sat there for almost 20 minutes with no one acknowledging me. Finally the waitress came up and I told her after waiting for over 15 minutes I did not want anything. She said she was busy getting drink orders which I replied. Yes I heard the table behind me got a drink order, received their drinks more people can they also got their drinks and had a good order before I was even acknowledged. Even with all the places I have been with COVID I have not been this disappointed!! read more

We stayed near Jay VT the end of September. We stopped at The Belfry the night before my husband's birthday. We enjoyed it so much that he asked to just go back to The Belfry the next evening to celebrate his birthday. Our meals were fantastic, the desserts were fantastic. We were visiting from out of town and this was the only restaurant open, but were happy we went here! Nice outdoor eating area. We had skins and they were great. Beer was cheap. The burger was very garlic-y but we like garlic so it was fine. Fries and onions rings were good also. Definite pub food, but would return again for sure. read more

Hey out-of-towners, watch out, not all customers are created equal here. People are treated differently and unfairly. We were waiting for a table, another family who came after us cut the line (even after I told them we were waiting), and the waitress sat them first. The line cutter lied saying he had a reservation (restaurant doesn't take them). I told the Maitre d' about this, but she said she didn't like my energy, lectured me and sided with the line cutter & cheater, and asked me to leave. This is a hidden gem in Northern Vermont. We eat here often. The atmosphere is friendly and everyone knows your name. We often sit in a booth. The food is cooked with care and is consistently good. We love hanging out there, taking our time talking and enjoying the meal. Their house salad is wonderful. Very fresh and crisp. The steaks, seafood and pasta are top notch. It's obvious the owners of the Belfry care about their community and the perception of their business. They're doing an outstanding job. read more

We had better than expected meals. Steaks were very good, the sauces right, the pasta was properly prepared and we had a very good peanut butter pie dessert. Thank goodness we split it three ways because it was a huge portion. It was also nice not to be scalped for a glass of wine. The garlic spinach vigorously lived up to its name so you'll have to really like garlic to enjoy it. Overall, it's a good, relaxing choice for dinner. read more

Very disappointed with this place. Our waitress 'greeted us' by telling us to take a picture of the specials board if we wanted to know them. Before ordering, we asked her nicely if we could have split checks (a party of 6 split 3 ways) she then told us she couldn't. We informed her that the menu said 'please no split check of parties of more than 6.' And she got snarky and said 'fine'. THEN when she was in the middle of taking orders she said, 'I'm adding 18% gratuity just so you know' in a very rude tone. It was clear that she was annoyed by our request for split checks. She was very short and unfriendly the rest of the night. Our food FINALLY arrived... almost an hour later... I got a the jay burger... VERY garlicky. Also, my bun was too hot to touch-clear it had been sitting under a heater for a while. Dinner last week on a Thursday was delicious! We have eaten here over the years and twice this summer. The menu is pretty versatile, I had a baked haddock and my husband had a baked haddock with baby shrimp and scallops in a sauce on top. They were both great. Wait-staff is friendly , but need to slow down just alittle at each table to give the person a chance to ask for something if needed. They just buzz by so quickly that you spend most of the time you should be eating waiting to get their attention. Also, the bartender was quite voicestrous, her conversation at the bar with patrons echoed through out the whole place and made it quite difficult to talk across the booth to other people. But all in all the food was great, timely and friendly place. We will return. read more

Visited with my family last night. Fun atmosphere, decent service, good value for what you get. We ordered salad, cheese nachos and mussels for apps ... all were fairly good. For mains we ordered the scallops specials which came with twice baked potato and a generous portion of steamed veggies. All was good except that the baked scallops were not noted that they were very breaded. I'm not sure there were many heathy options on the menu but pub and seafood options were abundant. Decided to go here while on vacation and we all regret it. My daughter's meal was completely burned and my steak was basically raw. The place has barely any tables so we waited an hour for a table and about two hours for our food. The service is completely disorganized, multiple waiters would come up and ask if someone had taken our orders yet, and one of the waiters didn't get our drinks until after the food had come. Stayed at Jay Peak for the weekend, and we have stayed in a enough resorts that we are definitely not huge fans or resort "restaurants", even if they are on the higher end, such as Alice's Table at Jay. So it was definitely tricky with there being pretty much no other options around close by. That was when I did some research online. I saw a few mentions of The Belfry, all were positive, so we went, having really no idea what to expect. It was perfect. Atmosphere is pub-like, definitely not a five star have to dress up kind of place, but we actually prefer it that way. We did find out after that they had an outdoor section as well. The Belfry is the definition of a hole in the wall treasure. It's in the middle of nowhere! For the menu....they have the basics you would expect in pastas and such, but it's really all about the specials. The Specials board is their menu, and every single item on it sounded delicious. We ended up with Smoked Trout Bruscetta, blackened chicken linguine, and gorgonzola and roasted garlic stuffed NY Strip. It was all AMAZING!! If it didn't take me so long to get there from our house, we would be there constantly. And can't forget about the Maple Bread Pudding......it was to die for! Price points were great, I think my steak was the most expensive at $21, but it is more than worth it. Again, I'm not new to "luxury" restaurants, and this definitely tops the list. The only reason I give this restaurant a 2 star is because the food is not that bad. The service is absolutely horrible though so it's not worth it. Because there are not many choices in Montgomery, we went on a sat night and then on a Tuesday night (thinking maybe they were just busy on a Saturday night.) Both nights were just as bad. They clearly don't hire enough staff and not the best staff. Expect 1-1.5 hours to get your food after you've ordered, expect your drinks to run dry and, and your water to run dry.....for a long time. They didn't even give us an itemized bill for a family of 5 but we just wanted to get out of there because we had been there for so long so we just paid it. read more

We heard good things from the locals and decided to give the Belfry a try, and it was a great choice. We were seated at a booth near the bar and it was a bit noisy. If you have hearing issues, you may want to ask for a table in the back side of the restaurant. It was Monday, which is apparently sushi night this summer. My boyfriend is not a sushi fan, so we stuck to the pub menu on the blackboard. However, I must say some of the sushi I saw going to other tables had me incredibly jealous and impressed. I grew up eating sushi at authentic Japanese restaurants in California back in the 80s, and explored some very fine sushi restaurants while I lived in NYC, but this place looked like it could hold up a candle to the best of what I have had before - that is, if it tasted as good as it looked. We had some mozzarella sticks as an appetizer and it was okay. Nothing amazing, but they did appear to be homemade and not from frozen. My boyfriend chose the chicken souvlaki (a smaller plate) while I had the shrimp scampi on pasta. He said his souvlaki was good but left him wanting more. My dish was a bit light on the shrimp, but they were perfectly cooked and the pasta was al dente and evenly coated in the butter and garlic sauce. It was very satisfying, though i figured I could make the same dish at home for about 1/5th the menu price. The service was extremely friendly and the hostess was very gracious. We felt like we were treated as regulars even though this was our first visit. Our one regret - we had already had ice cream that day and so we chose to forego the desserts. But, oh boy, they were enticing. Save room! read more

Typical small town vermont pub. The food was excellent. We started with the maple wings and they were very good, not too sweet with syrup. The side salads were fresh and just the right size. They also brought us s bread basket with plenty of bread for the four of us. I had the smothered steak ( brown gravy with mushrooms & onions). The steak was cooked perfectly, and very tender, no fat to cut away. My dinner companions ate the fisherman's platter and they loved it. We shared the Maple Cream pie and it was mixed reviews. I loved it but 2 of the other diners thought it was too sweet. The service could have been a little more attentive but no major complaints there. I would eat here again. read more

I honestly don't understand the reviews - I am local and been here 5 or 6 times. Love the atmosphere and the bar area - the service is great but the food? I have yet to have anything that doesn't taste like it came straight from the freezer to a buffet catering to aging taste buds. The specials board never changes so how about just putting it on the menu? Its kind of annoying to do the whole "take a picture, try to zoom thing" when the board NEVER CHANGES... Most of the seafood dishes some covered in ritz crackers - a lot of ritz crackers. This time I ordered the scallops without the breading and there were 5 small scallops in my dish swimming in an orange greasy puddle - not the big scallops - the small ones ($20) - and they were so overcooked they tasted like canned tuna. I've had the Gorgonzola stuffed steak, the pork chop, the balsamic chicken/spinach pasta dish, the steak that isn't stuffed....all seriously lacking any kind of flavor - and I'm pretty easy to please! I keep trying - we ski at Jay a lot - In my opinion, you come for the atmosphere, order a beer, just get a burger or a Caesar salad and a dessert - then all will be good just don't expect much from anything else on the menu. Better options: Big Jay Tavern, the Inn in Montgomery and the Black Lantern - no contest. read more
