A great space layout-wise, but I thought the staff way underreacted to the old man fight that went on for a good 3-4 mintues and way overreacted to the guy who puffed a doobie behind me and got not just asked to knock it off but quite promptly ejected. Cute little place to hang out and have a beer at. A bit sparse on the seating for such a large front bar area, but a chill vibe nonetheless.

So you're all like "Where the fuck is Gowanus? How far will I have to walk?," but you want to see a band/go to a tasting event/whatever else they have going on there, so you start walking. You'll see all of the graffiti along the way saying "Kook wants your soul," and you may get a little spooked, but let me say that the Bell House is worth it. They always have the coolest events going on, they serve reasonably priced drinks, and they have a great atmosphere. Top notch. read more

I came out the Bell House a few years back in July of 2011 for a psychobilly festival (Psychobilly Luau) my husband's band Klingonz were headlining. Coming in from the JFK, my flight was late, so there I was going straight to the venue with suitcase in arm. Lucky for me, the girl at the door was kind enough to hold my luggage and take it backstage for me. My initial first thought was, wow this place is fucking rad! I loved the whole venue ambiance and the backstage area was pretty awesome and comfy. The Bell House really knows how to treat their guests backstage. During my husband's set, I decided to walk over to the bar area and get a beer. Ok, so the bar is pretty long, and it's pretty dark inside. With that being said, I can see how the bartenders wouldn't first notice someone dressed in all black at the end of the bar. However, my problem is that upon ordering my first beer, the bartender had a "get lost" attitude towards me. Yet still, there I go again for another beer. Second time took waaaaaaay much longer to get me a beer, and finally when the two bartenders felt generous enough to help me, I notice one look over at me and giggle with a bitchy look on her face. I overhear one say "oh careful with that one, she doesn't even tip good!" The other said, "then why bother?!" First off, I'm ordering a fucking Pabst tall can, your tip isn't going to go further than $2/3. Secondly, maybe just MAYBE the second time around they would've gotten another tip out of me had I not heard them! I could've easily went backstage and drank for free. Hell no, I never tipped either of them my on my second beer. Hell yes, I went backstage and drank there instead! I would definitely come back again if I ever found myself somewhere in Brooklyn again for a gig. Maybe this time the bartenders won't be so shitty and rude. Customer service is key, keep that in mind :) I really loved the venue and the door girl gets 5 stars for being so awesome and taking care of my luggage. However, the bartenders need an attitude adjustment! read more

The Bell House is a spacious and friendly bar with a really cool vibe. The bartenders are fast and make strooong drinks. I went there on 90s night & felt as if I was back at my high school prom. I couldn't take the Top 40 90s music for too long, but I did like the space & loved the strong drinks. read more

What a gorgeous venue for a show! I saw Rhett Miller here last weekend and it was amazing. The stage / concert area is really intimate feeling, and there are gorgeous chandeliers etc. that set a great vibe. It felt more like a theater than a concert venue, and it was clear that the hall was designed beyond simply a desire to be functional. The bar is well stocked with a great array of beers, lots of local stuff (not stuck with Bud or Bud lite in an aluminum bottle) and the adjoining bar is great (and wasn't too packed for a Saturday night). How often do you stick around a concert a few hours after its over to hang out at the venue, not very, but at Bell House you can spend a happy evening, and not spend too much! read more

I love the Bell House -- the atmosphere is low-key but it's still a classy joint, with tons of artisanal beer and DUB pies. There are comfortable couches in the front room, and the low, warm lighting is amazing. The venue in the back is small but has great acoustics. I love it. read more

Went to the Bell House to see Sloan in early December. Parking wasn't hell, and the place was easy to find. The venue itself was small and I actually got to sit at a table by the bar to watch the band! They had some great beers on tap as well as in bottles and cans, so there was no shortage of fantastic beer. The bartender was hot, the beers were cold, and the sound was pretty good. The wood beams in the ceiling with the chandeliers on the ceiling were amazing to look at. All this for a $20 cover? Can't complain! read more

Love this place... Whether it's a comedy show, concert or an indie-rock/electro dance party. What a wonderful space!

Bell House is a great venue for events or just a nice bar without an event. The first room has the main bar (most beers on tap are $6 micro brews), lots of places to sit including a few couches, and a pinball machine. It's a large carvenous space and is a good cross between a dive and a lounge. The second area is the event space which also has a bar in it. It's the perfect size for an intimate event without it being too small or cramped. I went to see a live WTF podcast with Marc Maron. I'm not sure who controlled the price of the event but at $12 it was a great value. The Bell House might not be in the best of areas but it's a short walk from a couple subway stations and it's really worth going to, especially for any sort of event. read more

This is one of my favorite places for shows. The stage is small, and although the place isn't huge, it's big for local psychobilly and rockabilly events. Anywhere you stand you'll get a good view of the stage. I like that the bar is up a couple if stairs and behind railing because when the dancing starts, you can drink in peace. read more

Been here to see Louis CK and for an NPR taping; both times had a good vibe and were a great time all around. Acceptable prices on drinks, but the main reason I like this place is that it is such a great venue for 'off the beaten path' happenings. Their schedule always has creative stuff going on, and it's great that the events range from comedy to music to cool lectures. Even better, ticket prices are fair, so I'll definitely go again! read more

A good live music venue in Brooklyn.

I came here to see an 80s cover band named The Engagements. I could not believe how great the space was!There You walk in the front door to a small area with a bar. Keep going and turn the corner, you then enter a large room with a stage and a big bar in the back and another sizable bar on the side. The ceiling is high with cross hatched wood beams. From the ceiling hang gorgeous chandeliers. The space can hold lots of people and can keep up with their drinking needs. The bathrooms are also acceptable! always a good thing! This place has the ability to host more large name bands. The only issue is that its a small walk from the R train and a long walk from the F train. read more

I have been highly anticipating going to "The Rub" event for some time now, and finally was able to make the last Saturday of the month. The venue is awesome. The Bell House has lots of space, kind of like a fancy barn look with a classy yet rustic feel if that makes any sense...It has two bars with actually reasonably priced drinks. The music for the The Rub event was totally my style. Old school hip hop and R&B with splashes of newer songs. It was a diverse, chill crowd. While the main stage was blasting the tunes and dancing, the other room was playing live reggae. I am so happy this is so close by and fulfilled my expectations...I can't wait to go back! Just what I wanted, a place for some good old-fashioned dancing near Park Slope with only a $10 cover :) read more

This is a big venue, comparable to Union Hall or a Southpaw. Lots of great events here. I've been to Science Club (astrophysicist Jenna Levin presented the "sound of Black Holes"), and the Brooklyn Meatup (singles event for Valentine's day). Both were fun, quirky, and crowded. read more

Solidly in the top tier of NYC venues. The sight lines are great no matter where you stand, it's easy to get up front without being packed like sardines, and the beers on tap / cocktails on the menu are excellent. I've seen mainly rock shows here, and while the sound is typically great (e.g. Walkmen show, Mountain Goats show), it can sometimes be...not so great (e.g. feedback overpowering Ira Kaplan's voice at last night's Yo La Tengo show, although he maybe / probably intended for that to happen). read more

Decided to make the journey out to the Bell House for their State Fair: Colorado Event... while it's quite a jaunt unless you are a Gowanus resident, the venue is very unique and hip - their amazing chandeliers, plaid wearing frequenters, and comfy sofas say it all. I think their state fair series is a great way to expose themselves to new potential clients (such as a former Colorado-an like myself), I was lucky enough to score tickets to their "Grunge Prom" event, and unless there is another catastrophic NYC blizzard - I see no reason not to be there or be square! read more

Was here for a private event. Pretty large space with two separate rooms (each with its own bar and bathrooms). Lots of beer choices, at reasonable prices. I hear that they have cool concerts, movies and trivia nights too. Very Brooklyn, but not in a bad way. read more

Bonus star for the DUB pies. Nice, nice touch. The bourgeoisification of the Gowanus is well engaged with this joint. Rather nice space.

Besides the epic journey to reach this place, I dig it. Spacious, laid-back. Clever specialty cocktails.

come on, guys. don't be so scared of Gowanus. other than the threat of falling in the water and sprouting a second head or something, it's really not a bad place. and the bell house is great. the performance area is intimate and cute in a pretend rustic kind of a way, and the shows are great. there are lots of different beers to try--they'll run you about $8, which is normal. Nice intimate venue. Really easy to get to the bar (which unlike many venues) actually has some interesting drinks. I would definitely like to see more here, my only complaint is that they made us go into a line to get checked in and then another line while we waited outside before we could get in, and it was freezing. read more

i've been here a couple times now and absolutely love it. the performance space is one of the most unique i've been to in nyc, with its sister venue union hall being on that list as well. somewhat surprisingly for its size, they're able to pull some upper-echelon indie bands (nada surf, camera obscura recently), as well as host some pretty cool and unique events (ping-pong championships and kentucky derby party upcoming). the acoustics are also quite favorable for the types of bands they usually host. the bar in the performance space has a nice can selection at pretty fair prices, and i like that they stray from the norm by having genny cream ale as the obligatory "crappy" beer as opposed to pbr. the bartenders are also super friendly. the space up front is definitely much more low-key, but also great in its own right. while i can't remember exactly what was on tap the times i've visited, i remember being a little disappointed by the beer selection up front, as i'm more a fan of stouts than ipa's and belgian-inspired beers, but i guess i'm in the minority. never tried the pies or beer cheeses either, but i'm sure they're at least decent, because really, how badly can one mess up cheese? all in all, this remains one of my favorite venues in nyc for its off-the-beaten-path charm, non-pretentious crowd, unique space and overall good times. oh, and immaculate bathrooms! read more

Went to the bell house for a special concert. I dug the multiple rooms and multiple stage action. It was a perfect venue to have an intimate view of musical talent that may be up and coming, or continuing to burn the flame of passion for the art. The bathrooms were decent enough not to warrant a thankful prayer for all my military shots! The bar staff was friendly and quick. Always good to have a decent import like guineas to amp up an evening. Seated in Brooklyn, easy to get a cab if you over do. An awesome food truck outside capped it off with a veggie dog with arugula. This was a rockin fun time! read more

I went on a Friday around 11pm and the place was packed. I was recommended the spot by my Roomie (a guy) and I have to say it was a rowdy-fun time. Not too many guys. A great ratio where as a girl you could drink and dance and not be bothered much. There was one guy smoking who asked if he could touch my hair- but other than that it was a hilarious and fun time jamming to 90's music. read more

This was our first, and last trip, to the bell house. We bought 2 tickets for $ 200 for Norah Jones on Wed March 22. On the web it says seating for 350 people. After a 2 houdvride ghrough terrible NYC traffic from NJ, We entered and there were no seats! I asked and they oversold 500 tickets and took all the seats away. We are older and cannot stand for a 2 hour concert. I am very disappointed and feel that I have been swindled. I have not been to a concert in 30 years and was so looking forward to this. I will never come back. There are people my age sitting outside with me. They can't stand for 2 hours either. If you cannot stand for an entire concert, this is not the venue for you. read more
