I was searching for a while for a jeweler that can do repairs and alterations on site and found this place on my way to the hotel across the street. I didn't have time to stop by that day and thought I'd like to get some feedback from previous customers first before calling and so I yelped it. I know it's usually the other way around. :) Pleased with the Yelp reviews, I called and agreed to come and bring my rings. Jaime (the jeweler and owner) was busy with a bunch of repair/alteration orders so my rings took a few days to get resized but it was well worth the wait! They came out perfect! The new size was comfortable and much needed, the rings were sparkly clean and looked like new! The Bench Jewelry also has beautiful items for sale. The owner, Jaime is very personable and knowledgeable. I have returned twice now and he has diagnosed and fixed 3 watches for me. Reasonable prices, and he is patient to explain what is going on mechanically with your watch. Jaime has saved me hundreds of dollars thus far. For example I purchased a watch on line from Ashford and when it arrived the second hand sweep did not work although other parts of it did. Perplexing, and so I contacted Ashford for a replacement and told it was not available. Decided to check and see if the watch could be fixed and I found The Bench Jeweler on YELP. I had received this the chain accidentally broke I told him if he could fix it he would charge me $20 when I brought it in he said it's an old chain I said no it's a brand new chain 18 inch, he told me to come back the next day and he would have it fixed by 12 PM so I did,I paid him the $20 and I left but when I was leaving I noticed a chain looked a little discolored and a little older for some reason but I had been too him before so I trusted him so I didn't think much about it so then when I got home I put the chain on and noticed that this was a 21 inch chain and I noticed that it was a very old chain and it was not my original new chain I was very upset. I called him and I told him what happened and he said there's no way he would replace that chain I just told him that I wanted my chain back it was a sentimental value and I even had the receipt of when I bought this chain. I had received this as a gift from my fiancé for Valentine's Day,A jeweler is not gonna admit his mistakes,he swapped out my chain for an older chain and when I brought it back he tried to give me a new chain but it wasn't mine I wanted my new chain that I had just got a week ago. Ugh! Be very careful here. My wife and I have had two bad experiences! In my wife's case, he dissolved an enamel heart off of a vintage charm while cleaning it. In my case, he scratched both sides of a brand new (vintage) watch when replacing the battery, and then put the back on crooked! My wife warned me...! Arrgh!!!! He's cheap. But you definitely get what you pay for. In all fairness, he's OK with simple technical things like adding a charm to a bracelet - but after he scratched my watch - I'll never go back again. read more

I first called in to see if they could fix my ceramic watch I banged against a hard surface. Terrible, I know. He (I wish I got his name, I'm assuming he's the owner) said bring it by and he'd take a gander at it. Ten minutes later, he greets me with a warm welcome and asked I'd I had called. Great memory! The shop is exquisite, clean and professional to say the least with lots of beautiful pieces. I gave him some extra parts...and I asked if it could be done by the time I got off work. Being that it's been a busy week here in Monterey, with the US Open and the 4th of July... I kept my chubby little fingers crossed... Gave me the slip and I carried on with my day. Someone called me from the watch store and said my watch was ready to go! When I got there, he gave me some suggestions in regards to another everyday watch. I had a great experience! I had an engagement ring repaired and resized and two wedding bands cleaned and polished. I also had a watch battery replaced. Everything was ready promptly the following day and looked great! I appreciated being able to talk directly to the owner, who is very detail oriented, rather than a retail employee collecting jewelry to be sent out. This made the ring sizing turn out spot on. (I recently had a ring sized at Macy's. It took more than two weeks, and the fit was less precise.) Our twenty four-year-old rings were worn, dingy, and scratched when I dropped them off. I needed a new battery for my Swiss watch. The owner was very helpful over the phone about how he handles the care of the watch. While in the store you can see he is a professional watch and jewelry expert. He has the workshop and he is not someone who does this as a quick sideline for extra money.
