Good good, or small-town good? I confess, that is the question that plagues me whenever I read the glowing reviews of a small-town operation like the Bench Market. And I am here to report: GOOD good. The pulled pork sandwich: a religious experience. I briefly thought about knocking my husband out so I could eat the entire thing, and not just the bite he shared with me, but then I thought, any guy who would give me even one bite of a sandwich this delicious is a pretty great guy, so I should probably hold off on the physical assault. The Thai noodle salad: very tasty, but honestly, I had major food envy over that pulled pork. The kids' yogurt and granola parfaits? Their favorite EVER, though that may be due to the fact that they were actually whipped cream and cookie crumbs and not yogurt and granola (my faulty/wishful assumption, and not deceptive labeling). I'm afraid that was the only thing I could get the kids to eat, since the kid menu skewed toward the more sophisticated side (i.e. deviated from burgers, hot dogs and pizza, which are about all the kids can be relied on to eat. More fool them.) An EXCELLENT peanut butter cookie, or so my son told me before devouring the entire thing without offering me so much as a bite. I believe him, because he ate a second one even after it fell in a river and was totally soggy and gross-looking. Delicious, not-too-sweet lemonade. It's not every day that I come across a restaurant/bistro that will make food that could change my life, but my goodness this one did! I headed out to Penticton on a business trip and had no idea where to go to grab a bite to eat. I was working on a job site with a few guys that told me I had to stop in and get a sandwich here. Not knowing where else I could go I stopped in and looked around. The atmosphere was really nice but a little crowded. Might have been nicer had the weather outside been warmer and they had their obvious patio furniture set up. The crowd of people would have been a little more spread out this way. I took a look at the menu on the chalkboard and had no idea what I wanted to order. All of the sandwiches contained ingredients that I wasn't familiar with and had no clue as to how well they would taste. On the recommendation of the clerk, I ordered the beef brisket sandwich with a coleslaw side salad. I grabbed a drink, paid for my order and sat down to wait for the delivery of my food. When it showed up I was wowed by the presentation. It's just a sandwich but it was very nicely presented on the plate and the coleslaw salad was very elegantly presented as well. Now, I've never said anything like this before (check my reviews if you don't believe me) but when my teeth sunk into this sandwich I felt like I had died and gone to sandwich heaven. This just wasn't an ordinary sandwich like you find at Subway or Fife 'n' Dekel. This was absolute heaven. This sandwich stimulated every single taste bud on my tongue. This was the first time I ever though food was better than sex. It was THAT GOOD!! Every single bite I took made the sandwich taste better and better, and after each bite I let out a delicious moan. This sandwich changed my life. Now, because of this one sandwich, I make it a point to eat here every chance I get. While I enjoyed some r and r with my wife, we dropped by this little cafe for lunch and breakfast. It's nestled on a hill in the middle of a residential area. If you don't use google maps you will not find it. This place has ample seating outdoors but it's kinda cramped inside. You have to navigate through its cluttered layout of shelves filled with organic preserves and grocery items. Once you take a look at their menu your mouth will salivate. Their array of sandwiches are well thought out and a decent size. I got the Sicilian with a side pickle. It was tasty and filling. I washed it down with this amazing organic root beer. The next day we returned for breakfast because I wanted eggs Benedict. Great stuff. Overall this place is really cool. It's a happening spot that many locals visit. The price is good for what you get. The only problem I have is the lack of space inside. Too cluttered for my taste. read more

When we drove by this cute little market I suspected that it might be the perfect place to get some cheese plate supplies. My suspicions were correct, we stopped in the next day close to closing and found everything that we needed, no, more that we expected for our dinner. I had specifically wanted black olive tapende for some reason & not only did they have it, it was a house-made version and it was perfect, lemony, and delicious. Their cheese selection was small, but we found a nice stinky rind ripened cheese & a lemon cheve, both BC made and very good. We also grabbed some roasted artichokes and lentil salad from their deli case, and a loaf of locally made rye bread that has just been delivered. The staff were very accommodating, especially since we were interrupting them from their closing tasks. The Bench Market also sells deli sandwiches, frozen handmade meals to go, various crackers, nuts and jams. I believe they also had an espresso machine (we aren't caffeine addicts). read more

The Bench is one of our local gems. As Vancouver Hill rises from Front Street, this is your last, year-round stop for fresh-brewed coffee and delcious deli-style breakfasts and lunches before the bustling burg of Naramata Village 15 minutes down the road. Great coffee, tea, chai and other hot drinks, plenty of imaginative in-house baked goods and a great selection of pannini, casseroles, salads and all things deli. While you wait for your order, browse the aisles for a jar or package of something unique like pastas, pickles, crackers, cheeses or beverages; many made locally. There's outdoor seating when the weather is fine, a place to park your bike and some great people watching. "Meet you at the Bench" is becoming a standard line for rendevous among locals and visitors. Twice in 2 days The bench club is a grilled panini without the extra layer of bread. Just the way I like it. Add a raspberry lemonade and it was the perfect hot day lunch. The next day for brunch was a latte and the best bacon & egg breakfast sandwich I have had. read more

Hard to give this place less than 5 stars because it offers tasty food, wonderful service as well as reasonable prices. Additionally, the cafe has a nice outdoor patio to have your lunch in the summer time in a very nice setting. The location is best when you are on your way to wine tasting in Naramata bench or other benches in the area since it is on Vancouver street. read more

Came here for a quick bite to eat most places were closed on Sunday. It's located next to a bunch of houses. Lots of street parking. There's seating inside and out. It's quite busy. Took about 30 minutes to order and get our food. There's a good selection of panini and wraps. We got the club panini and the chicken. The panini was hot and good size for a light lunch. The bread was perfectly toasted and cheese was all melty. The house blend coffee was good serve piping hot. read more

I'll begin by stating that I used to be a very regular customer, it was my fave lunch/coffee place! then moved. Came in today for the first time in a year, and am super disappointed at the way food quality and service have seemed to slip. Ordered Avo Toast from the 'Breakfast All Day EveryDay' menu, only to be told I couldn't have it at 3:20pm. The staff were impatient and snippy with me and each other. I then ordered a breakfast burrito substitution. The greasy, lava hot (clearly microwaved) bland mess with even blander salsa was a big disappointment. I've had that item many times, this time, the burrito was almost inedible. The salsa was nowhere near as good as it used to be. The prices are higher, staff way less friendly, and there is every chance I won't be back after this. Come on guys. You had us, maybe you're getting lazy, or cheaping out, or understaffed...in any case, I'm sad to see this. read more

Yummers! First time in Penticton and wanted something else besides Denny's or White Spot. Local hangout filled with people wanting Sunday brunch post run or with friends. Totally delivered with a piping hot big mug of Irish breakfast tea and a hot grilled panini style breakfast burrito filled with fresh ingredients and crisp spinach. Top notch and recommended. The Bench Market has a cute patio, and some indoor seating. It is quite packed with interesting and unique products to buy. If you walk to the back you can order sandwiches, baked goods, and beverages. The sandwiches are very flavorful, and have a lot packed in. I loved that they had unique soda flavours such as vanilla peach. Despite feeling somewhat claustraphobic when trying to order, the experience was good. We were hoping our Penticton streak here would continue, but this was a big overpriced disappointment. In comparison, Il Vecchio's sandwiches and Bad Tattoo's thin and potato salad left us wanting more. $10 Beach club was fresh, but the flavors combined into something completely uninspired. $6 Kids Grilled cheese was the biggest disappointment. Once a month I take my hospice volunteers for a get together and coffee and I like to pic a different cafe each month to support everyone. This is the second time I have taken them to the Bench and the experience was the same both times. I was hoping the first time was just a "one off", but it wasn't. I always get some goodies and ask to run a tab so that my group can order whatever coffee they want and I pay at the end. This was a HUGE imposition for them and even after the owner came to talk to me it was a difficulty. First they needed my credit card, in case I run off and then they didn't....hey I get that there are people out there that do that stuff but......I told them my name and organisation and 9 of us were sitting where we could be seen the whole time. (as a side my latte was cold and after I asked for it to be heated up , it reached luke warm! ) won't be going back. read more

I always look forward coming here when I'm in Penticton. I love that they have a little food market where you can buy local foods and preserves. Their sandwiches are fantastic - I always seem to find myself ordering the 'fun-guy' sandwich; so mushroomy, so delicious. They have a wide variety of baked goodies which are always super tempting (Try the granola bars, omg!), and I love their well organized coffee menu. This was the most amazing breakfast/lunch place we have EVER had. We ordered a lot of different sandwiches, gluten free for the kids....and every single one was beyond delicious. Found this place while in town for the iron-man. Saved my life. The only place where I could get a good breakfast and great espresso! Seems like everything else in town for breakfast was a greasy spoon. They're organic, make their own scones, most of the food is organic, ranged raised and local... plus many other things. Have had some good times here, have had some not so good times. Food has been inconsistent, their weekend brunch and eggs Benny's are fantastic, but regular breakfasts are expensive for what you get. The bacon is thick cut and tasty but it's 10+ for two eggs and bacon and toast, I think it's around $12 but not sure so I'll say $10. Once the chef didn't want to poach my eggs and said they would take too long...so I ordered sunnyside up, they weren't cooked ontop, partially my fault for not insisting that 'eggs anyway' was the way I actually wanted but I've never been anywhere else where I ordered poached eggs and was told not to because they would take to long. Go for the Benny's, skip the weekday breakfasts. read more

Visiting Pentiction and stopped in for Saturday breakfast (arrived around 10am) and it was comfortably busy with no wait time. The place is super cute- a little market with local and house made products on shelves surrounded by tables and seating for the counter-serviced coffee shop. The portions are small, yes, but the quality is large and I, for one, would take quality over quantity any day. The breakfast sandwich is delicious. The regular breakfast is delicious, all served with local organic products and you see it and taste it in the food. The coffee is tasty. I will be back next time around! Thanks! read more

Premier place for breakfast or brunch. Got us 2 bacon eggwiches, 2 lattes and 2 fruit (loaded) muffins for just under $25. Food was super tasty and for that price you just can't go wrong. My sister and I stopped in for lunch today. This place is just around the corner from grammas house. Sis had french onion soup, half sandwich, with a potato salad side. I had a turkey bacon club panini. All the food was really tasty. Sis had a latte and I had a brewed coffee. Both were great and today drinks were FREE. First time for me, went with my friends who have all been before and highly recommended. Wasn't disappointed, food was very good. Had their tomato soup for lunch and sat outside in the sunshine. A hip cafe shop in Penticton that serves breakfast and house made sandwiches. You go in, order and receive a little table sign, pay, pick a table, then your order is served to you. Food was yummy that I went two days in a row! I definitely suggest the Wild Fun Guy mushroom sandwich. There's also a handful of fresh side dishes you can choose from. Second day I ordered the Smoked Salmon Benny which was delicious, but I wish it came with more potatoes on the side! Minor thing, but I hoped a server would initially ask if we needed anything once the food came, or come around and check on us instead of me going back in and feeling like I'm troubling them for a few things.
