The truly unfortunate part? We were entertained right up until the musician stopped singing and started communicating. Apparently, the microphone was doing a lot of heavy lifting for his personality. Great voice. Terrible decision to introduce us to the man attached to it. While taking a break from performing, he came onto the deck where I was sitting with my friend and decided that publicly talking down to and humiliating a woman was how he wanted to spend his intermission. The interaction was misogynistic, demeaning, disrespectful, unnecessarily cruel, and an absolutely bizarre amount of hostility to direct toward a woman he doesn't even know. Here is the thing about rape culture: it does not exist only in the most extreme acts. It is also sustained by the everyday normalization of misogyny, humiliation, hostility toward women, and the expectation that women should quietly tolerate degrading behavior and call it a joke. When a grown man feels comfortable publicly belittling a woman and everyone around him is expected to dismiss it as harmless banter, that behavior contributes to the same culture that teaches men their hostility toward women is acceptable and teaches women to simply endure it. Imagine being hired to entertain customers, successfully entertaining them, and then using your break to personally ensure they never come back. That is a level of customer service I almost have to respect for its efficiency. What bothers me almost as much as his behavior is knowing this is someone the establishment chose to hire as entertainment. I came for drinks and live music. I did not realize the entertainment package included a talented singer followed by complimentary misogyny on the patio. Women should be able to sit outside with their friends, have a drink, laugh, and exist in public without a grown man deciding their evening needs an unsolicited serving of humiliation simply because he feels entitled to deliver one. There are plenty of establishments in St. Charles where women can spend their money without being treated like shit by the hired entertainment, so I will happily spend mine somewhere else. And to the musician responsible: great addition to rape culture. Whatever war you are fighting with women, or yourself, I sincerely hope you figure it out someday. But if the only way you can feel tall is by trying to make a woman feel small in front of her friends, you were never standing very high to begin with. Maybe stick to singing. You were considerably more likable when none of us knew your personality. "Do not see Kevin Babb"
