This place is small-town America with pride, charm, friendly, and helpful. Great food, huge portions. Yesterday, we had the Philly Brisket. It was delicious. Last night, we had pizza. Very good. This morning, we got a sausage egg and cheese sandwich, western omelet, hashbrowns, and toast. Amazing service, great prices, awesome food! River Dock 11' draft with overnight stays. The owner drove his truck and purchased fuel for our boat using his cans. We were still 20+ miles from a fuel point, and we were out. He saved us! Thank you.

We drive about an hour and 25 minutes from St. Louis, MO which generally includes a ferry ride to or from or both! Mel's Riverdock is worth the drive! Breakfast is only served until 11am so we have to leave early to make it in time! Their American fries are so yummy on The Ramp Special for breakfast with scrambled eggs and bacon with rye toast! Yum!! Then we share two pancakes because they are huge! Top those pancakes with blueberry compote & whipped cream!! Ask for hot sauce if you need an extra kick! Wash it all down with good coffee!! The service is great too!! Ask for Jeane! Oh did you save room for pie? Unfortunately we never do but you should see these choices! Maybe we should take some to go!?!

"Forgottonia" is an old name for western Illinois (you can google that), and Hardin is near the southern edge of it. After nearly seventeen years in Illinois, I made my first trip there this past Sunday. From Hardin, Jerseyville is the "big town" to the east, the approach from which involves a drawbridge over the Illinois River. If you're familiar with Pere Marquette State Park, from there to Hardin you go about 20 miles north and a little west. After time in Hardin for an anniversary celebration, we traveled a few blocks to Mel's, which has the reputation as the best restaurant in town. By the time we arrived at the dock, AT&T Wireless was in the "no service" mode. But, amazingly, there was free "Riverdock" wireless. After we seated ourselves at a table in the 3/4-filled front room, it took a waitress a few minutes to notice us, but when she did, it was like we were old friends. We'd been told the smoked chicken was very good, so that's what Therese H. ordered as her "Sunday Special" (meat with three sides). I ordered the grilled walleye. Despite the standard gluten-free speech to the server, both entrees came out on a slice of white bread (the only mistake, but potentially a serious one). My walleye also rested on a large slice of lightly grilled onion, and came with a tossed salad, cucumber salad, and baked potato as my sides. The Gluten-Free One had tossed salad (no croutons!) beet salad, and corn. A glass of chardonnay for her, and a bottle of Bud Light for me (small glass) completed our table. Everything was very good! Mel's is one of those completely unpretentious places where you can mingle with people you're not going to see in most urban areas. Right next to us was a table of eight hunters in full gear, returning from a weekend in the great outdoors and regaling one another (and us) with tales of their adventure. Even one of the waitresses was wearing an item of camo clothing, and there were lots of ball caps on heads all around. I was wearing a sportcoat, but no one seemed to mind. Afterwards, we spent a few minutes out back watching the moon rise over the Illinois River. Lovely journey for a sunlight-over-snowy-river-bluffs winter afternoon and moonlit evening. Even Onyx the Dog seemed to be in a mellow mood from her perch in the backseat of the SUV. In an urban context, I'd give Mel's a solid three stars. Given the challenge of its rather isolated location and limited exposure, I'll bump it up to four.

It's a neat-looking place--nicely decorated, inviting, and full of that good smoky aroma that hits you as soon as you step inside. We were welcomed immediately, told to sit wherever we liked, and our waitress followed us over to take our drink orders right away. My wife ordered the meatloaf special, and while I teased her for choosing meatloaf at a BBQ joint, I ended up going with the Smoked Reuben. They brought her an entire meatloaf, along with green beans and mashed potatoes. I'm not exaggerating--this loaf easily could have fed three people. It was so good she nearly hurt herself trying to finish it. She almost made it through all the green beans, too, but I managed to snag the last one--and it was delicious. Then came my Reuben: a massive, five-layer monstrosity. I actually asked the waitress whether they made it that way just to impress me (since I had announced upfront that I'm a bit of a Reuben snob, lol) or if all their Reubens are like this. She swore they're all made exactly the same. You've got to see the photo. The marbled rye was sturdy and didn't collapse under the weight of two layers of thinly sliced smoked beef and a thick layer of juicy, tangy sauerkraut. I'm a kraut lover, so I really appreciated how generous they were. The house-made Thousand Island-style sauce tied everything together perfectly. In the nearly 17 years I've been posting on Urbanspoon, Zomato, and now Yelp, this Reuben easily sits in my top three--maybe even my #1. The smoky flavor made it unique, and I loved it. My only regret was not being able to finish this monster of a sandwich--it was delicious but messy, and I went through a handful of napkins. A lovely lady came out to ask how I liked the Reuben and introduced herself as one of the owners. (I apologize--I've forgotten her name!) My only suggestion would be to keep the meat thinly sliced--shaved would be even better--and maybe offer a half portion at a lower price. As it was, I could barely touch my perfectly cooked French fries. To top off the experience, my wife ordered the bread pudding. She has a "gold standard" bread pudding from years ago that she compares all others to, and she said this one was just as good, if not better, than her all-time favorite. I wish we had a Sugar and Smoke closer to home, because it would absolutely be a regular stop for us. It's so refreshing to find an establishment that cares this much about its food and its customers.

The line wasn't too long, but I did notice it's set up a little differently than I remember. They now use more of the building, so the line runs down the hallway and loops into the restaurant, with two ordering counters available. While you're waiting, they have menus to look at and even a QR code if you'd rather pull it up on your phone. We ended up waiting about 10 minutes before ordering. Once we got to the counter, everything moved quickly. The staff member helped us right away and let us know they'd bring the food out to our table, which I was glad hasn't changed. One thing I did notice is that the original ordering/dining area is no longer open for seating, it looks like it's now used for staff and possibly catering/to-go orders. They have their drink station available for self-service and offer sodas and sweet and unsweet tea options as well as water. Luckily, there's still plenty of seating in the newer dining area, plus a good number of outdoor tables if you want to sit at a picnic table and enjoy the weather. Within a few minutes, we heard our names called and our food came out fast. And honestly, it was just as good as ever. I was especially happy with the sweet potato fries, and even though applesauce isn't anything fancy, it's kind of the perfect side for me at Pappy's. I ended up eating about half of my meal and boxing the rest up for dinner later, which is always a win. Overall, such a great spot, and I'm really glad it's so close to work. Definitely still a fan and will keep going back.

My research brought me here to Pappy's. I'm very glad it did. Ambiance starts with a line out the door, literally. You slowly shuffle down a long hallway full of Pappy's memorabilia. Then you make it to the ordering counter, order, and find a table. The dining room is huge, plenty of tables, with a full complement of sauces on each table. The service people at the counter were friendly, and so were the people delivering the food. The food came out quick and hot and delicious. We had baked beans and potato salad for sides, and they were pretty solid. Nothing show-stealing, but no complaints about them whatsoever. And of course, we got the ribs. Tender, juicy, a nice bite and chew, a decent bark, just a really wonderful rib. Better than any St. Louis style rib I've ever had back home in Florida. Other states, hard to say, the jury's out, but in that moment, I was eating a five-star rib. So good. We also got a 1/4 pound of the Burnt Ends. Usually, burnt ends are the king of meats, but I think we've entered the phase of America, where they're just another variety of meat and not necessarily upper echelon anymore. That being said, these were pretty ok. Should have gotten more ribs. Overall, Pappy's was pretty wow. Great local spot with a lot of pride and history, excellent ribs, I will definitely try to come back next time I'm in town.

It was so disappointing, that I didn't even eat it all. I threw half of it away and I rarely waste food. My Two Plate was a Pork Steak and Brisket, with Smokehouse Beans and Spicy Cheese Corn. The Pork Steak was good, but the Brisket was dried and tough. The Smokehouse Beans have disappointed me before, but I wanted to give them another chance. Again, they were to runny and had not enough seasoning to give them pizzaz. Their Spicy Cheese Corn was just okay, it was cheesy, but did no live up to the "Spicy" name. What was most disappointing was the customer service. The young lady taking my order was friendly and professional, so she gets a thumbs up. The disappointment came when I was presented my order at the counter. As I waited for my for to be prepared I took a stool at the counter, just down from the register. When it was ready, the owner brought it out and dropped the bag in front of me and turned to walk away. No thank-you, no nothing. I had to speak first, to get response and it was just faint grunt. It is a sad day when a business owner cannot thank a customer for supporting his business.
