We went there for wine tasting on a Saturday evening and it turned out to be an amazing fun and educatory experience. Over a course of 90 mins or so, he brought out 15 different wines and gave us a background story, food pairings and price consideration for each of them. They don't have food onsite. So, we took our own snacks and the business allows it. Richard is very knowledgeable and has been running this store for over 2 decades. A senior citizen dedicated to his craft. The wine tasting experience was $25 and there is a courtesy purchase of 1 bottle. But the wines were so amazing, we ended up buying way more. In fact, I returned to the store just a week later to buy more bottles of champagne for a party I was hosting later that week. The area also has a huge free parking lot which is a big deal in Wilton. Poor guy has been having issues with the business phone so he might not always be able to answer the calls but go directly if you are in the area and you will be treated well. read more

Richard always provides a thorough education on the 15 or so wines you will try at one of his tasting events. The session lasts about 3 hours, cost $20 per person and covers a lot of ground. I'm sure he loses money on the $20 when you look at all the delicious wines you tried. These are not cheap wines. He is humorous. The place is comfortable. Everybody will have a great time. He shares interesting tidbits about the winemakers and vineyard owners. Many of them stop in to his shop to promote the latest vintage. Get on his email list for regular updates. "You will love this wine but you will not 'like' the price. You'll love the price". Somehow Richard always finds a way to sell a great $50 bottle for $37. Phenomenal and an overall enjoyable and memorable experience. I joined a friend who spoke highly about her wine tasting experiences and the Best Cellar. I met Richard, the owner, he manages and organize this tasting events a few times a week. The best part is that you get to try wines before buying them. The price point is way better than any local stores. For $20 p.p you get to try high quality wines and learn about a wide variety of wines, champagne and even rosé. He also have dessert wines worth trying. The venue, or like Richard called it his living room it's beautiful, every detail brings you close to France. He offers a 10 tastings variety on paper for $20pp but ends up being way more than 10 bottles as he has bonus bottles which are amazing as well. Great price for the experience. This is a really good place to come for a date night, with a friend or group of friends. It's an evening of wine tasting, lasting about 2 1/2 -3 hours, and sampling a very good number of wines. We sampled 14, and that's really a pretty good amount. He said we'd get about 5 glasses in all, but I'd say it was realistically more like 2-2 1/2. He was informative about each wine and about wine in general. The wines he gave us were all very reasonably priced. The whole evening only cost $30, which I think is reasonable. The only negative comment I have is that he's a little too hard sell. Throughout the whole evening and again when you do buy something he really pushes product on you. I've driven by The Best Cellar countless times and never noticed it. And it's been there for 22 years?! That's longevity for a wine tasting bar and shop. The shop feels a bit disorganized, and it's hard to find your way around without help, so have patience. I only became aware of The Best Cellar when a friend invited me to a wine tasting party. 16 of us sat around a huge table and tasted over a dozen wines. We had a good time which obviously got better as the night went on LOL. Richard, the proprietor, gets a bit flowery and embellished in his wine introduction speeches, but knows what he is talking about, and knows we wanna taste the wines! Many of his wines are hard to get and can be obscure (one only he "has access to East of the Mississippi"). I asked if he had any Priorat, which is a small wine region near Barcelona. Yes he did and it was a very good one and fairly priced. I grabbed a few bottles and have since returned several times for more. If you're looking for a particular wine and winery, if he doesn't stock it, he can probably get it. Being in dire need of a top quality bottle of Valpolicella for a Verona stylized Romeo and Juliet theme party, hopefully without a drag queen Juliet (As most of the Juliet types of Wilton Manors tend to be. LOL!) or a death ending scene, I stopped by The Best Cellar, and glad that I did. I was immediately greeted by the owner, Richard, who not only had precisely what I was looking for in a Valpolicella wine, a "Classico" of the original production region grape, but also graciously gave me a darn good education about it. And, having myself spent a considerable period of time boozing it up in and around the area of Verona I knew to be on spot correct. There are a good number of reasons I really like The Best Cellar. The store is well set out, good arrangement, really gorgeous in a classical style, with a good variety of some difficult to find select wines. Best of all, I found them all to be at prices I would consider reasonable. Also the good advice of the owner, Richard, can prove to be invaluable in making good value selections. For example I selected a wine priced at $35, but Richard advised me of an equally outstanding substitution priced at $13.50. I ended up purchasing both bottles but when later comparing the two together, found the differences between the two imperceptible. I should also note that The Best Cellar has an emailing list, which if you sign up, will keep you posted as to the availability of select wines, most of which come from smaller estate vineyards not found in any other wine stores. You will also receive notices for evening wine tastings at a cost of approximately $20 charged with your reservation but most often later applied in full toward your purchase price of a case, should you so choose. read more

We came here for a wine tasting for my best friend's birthday and it was a fun time, but not my favorite. So the place itself is really nice and full of different wine selections from all over the world. They have some really unique options as well that are apparently not available anywhere else. The prices are also very reasonable. In that regard, this is a nice wine shop, but the tasting experience itself was not my favorite. The charge for the tasting is $25, regardless of whether you are drinking or not. I was supposed to be the DD so my husband asked Richard and he said that I would have to pay regardless. Oh well, ended up paying and just participating in the tasting. We tried maybe 10-12 different wines/champagnes, some were surprises and some he told us about before hand. The only caveat is that you buy a bottle of wine at the end of the tasting. Which I think is fair since you are bound to like at least one of the options you try and the price is good so only makes sense to buy it. We liked most of the options we tried and ended up buying 5 bottles. The reason I give this place a 3 is because I feel like the pours were very minimal and not equal. Some people in our party got a heavier pour and some barely got any and with every pour, Richard also gave himself a pour which was kind of unfair, I would have liked for us to have been able to get better pours and finish the bottle within our group. The other annoying this is that Richard talks a lot, giving all sorts of information, and mostly not anything important lol. I would have preferred he pour us one wine and then let us as a group talk about it and then we move on to the next one. Almost felt like I was sitting in a college class. Attended a wine tasting for a birthday.. the cost was $20 which was a great price What was very off putting was the fact the host (a very interesting person) stated there was a 1 bottle per individual purchase at the end. The decor seemed out dated but there was a very huge range of wines. The overall tasting was very long .. you have to wait for all parties to arrive to begin. The host gives descriptions first then you have to wait to receive your sample. Warning you can get yelled at for bringing certain foods as the host stated you shouldn't eat during a tasting. Wonderful selection of unique wines! The owner is very proud of his lovely 'home away from home' and helps to make very personalized recommendations. It is a small business like this that deserves some big love! Unlike some other viewers, I prefer to shop here than those big box stores for two reasons 1) they'll never have these selections of wine (instead you'll find plenty of Yellowtail and other discount brands), and 2) you don't get the same personal experience or expertise. The only reason I would come back is to turn this hideous disaster of a wine tasting into a drinking game. Drink every time Richard says: 1. This is a $150 tasting, but only charges $25. 2. His prices are so low and wine so good it's basically an oxymoron. 3. Some allegedly famous person you've never heard of bought cases of this exact wine last night. (Drink x2 if the amount of cases is double digits.) 4. The owner of a vineyard took him out to dinner because he sells so many bottles of the wine you are tasting. 5. The price of the bottle ends in .95 6. He's out of the wine you are tasting/a wine on the list you can't taste because everyone bought it at the tasting last night. Richard may be a bit dramatic in his stories, but make no mistake: he knows his wines. He has never once suggested a wine that was not good. His wine tastings are lively, and the wines are consistently good. He will provide plenty of bonus wines to try, especially if he sees that you are a serious wine drinker (as opposed to drinking for the sake of drinking). He tells a lot of stories but it's all very entertaining. If he is giving us a brand new wine to try (brand new to his store) and it's not up to par, he'll be the first one to say it. We trust his taste implicitly and like to stop by whenever we are in need of a good wine to go with whatever we are having that night. Some tips: - 1. If you're just going to buy wine, try to come before 8pm as that is when the tastings begin and he really takes them seriously. If you come after the tasting has begun, he'll get slightly annoyed at the interruption (understandably so). 2. Again, if you're just going to buy wine, go with his suggestions and don't fight him. Trust him. He's good. 3. If you are , in fact, attending a tasting, make sure to EAT before you go and bring a bottle of water with you. Richard feels that food interferes with the actual taste of the wine (it's a wine tasting, after all, not a pairing), so he only provides some mild cheese and crusty bread. This is fine, except that you'll be sampling a lot of wines and it will go to your head quickly if you don't have something in your stomach. 4. If you are in the wine tasting and realize that you don't like a certain wine that was poured, or you're starting to get tipsy and wish to discard the wine in your glass, try to do so when Richard is not looking... otherwise be prepared for him to look at you as if you have committed a sin. 5. If you're going on a Wednesday, and drink ALL of the wines in the tasting, please consider taking an Uber. Bottom line: this really is The Best Cellar, and Richard knows good wine. Go and have a good time! Final tip.... This wine shop is in a plaza that is mostly defunct. He is the best thing in there. Don't be put off by the lack of pizzazz on the facade. The shop is quite lovely on the inside. read more

We have done Richard's wine tastings & organized large groups several times over the years and his quirky personality usually is pretty entertaining. The last time we went during the holidays, we organized for a dozen friends to meet and arranged with Richard that we would bring appetizers to share...with the request from Richard not to put anything but mild cheese out until after tasting to not spoil the flavor of the wine. The wine was good but we aren't so psyched to plan another event here. Richard was very rude to our group, practically scolding us like a school teacher for talking to one another. We understand the presentation value and his desire to sell us wine but we also like to have a good time...and let's face it, after a bit of wine tasting we were all laughing it up! The tasting was also so slow this time due to his melodramatic pauses that we ended up bringing our food out early because everyone was hungry! As usual, our group bought lots of wine but one friend was so fed up with Richard's attitude that she didn't buy anything on principle. This is a nice wine bar but there are lots of choices popping up in town...I am not sure if/when we will return. read more
