Went in to get my bike serviced. They said, it would be ready by the following week Tuesday, and would call me if there were any unusual repairs needed. Called the following week Wednesday (since no one called me back to say the bike was ready on Tuesday), in the morning. They said it would be ready later in the week. 2 hours later they say the bike is ready. When I picked up the bike, they said they could not fix the bike's brakes, because they don't work with DOT brake fluid; but that they had replaced the bike chain at least. Yay (sarcasm) ! So I had to pay $180, for a half-fixed bike. They should've called me to quote how much to replace the brakes or said they cannot fix the brakes before proceeding to do any "work'' on the bike. When I asked, they quoted me $220 to replace the brakes. I was planning on bringing both my wife and son's bikes to be serviced, but needless to say, they are rip-off artists and I will not be using their services ever again. read more

Stopped in to have front brakes fixed on a brand new bike I got. The front brakes didn't work before or after taking it in and I was charged $22? To be honest even if they did tweak them to get them to work $22 is too much. I will be returning to get a refund - hopefully. But I still cannot believe that nothing was done to fix them? This Sunday afternoon, I needed a cluster removal tool, but the bike was old and the tool wasn't in stock, so Shawn and Mike took off the cluster at no charge and ordered the FR-5 tool. I need to do more business with them so they can make some money and remain open. Thanks guys! read more

I'm giving them two stars because I bought a brand new bike from them and they were able to knock about $80-100 off the price for me. For that I am thankful; HOWEVER, I noticed the bike was making sounds when braking. So I sprayed WD40 on the brakes (big mistake, I know). It began making even more horrific sounds. I attempted to repair and I couldn't get the brake back connected properly. I gave them all the disclaimers and took it back to them to get repaired. This is during the Covid era so they told me two weeks due to high demand. I called the day before the two week mark to confirm that it would be ready (I hadn't heard anything from them up to that point). They were asking me what was wrong with my bike and what I was looking to get done (they clearly hadn't even taken a look at it yet). I told them again what I had done and recommended the pads get swapped out. They said it may take another week. So I said okay, as other bike shops were swamped as well. Two days later they called prior to opening and told me my bike was ready. I was honestly surprised and asked them what exactly they had done. They said a tune up and new brake pads. I went to pick up the bike later that day and I test rode it....exact same issue with the loud screeching sound. It had been there for two weeks and I wasn't willing to keep it there longer and be out of commission so I just took it home. They attempted to charge me $65 but I reminded them that I bought the bike from them brand new and the first tune up was supposed to be free. The guy went back inside and came out with a clean receipt, no charges. I took the bike home and examined it. Pictured are the pads....NEVER changed. Definitely the same pads from before. They simply reconnected the brake cables and called it a day. I ended up ordering some new pads, put them on properly myself and the sounds are gone. Problem solved. I just wish they could have saved me the trouble and done the service properly. I will not be returning to them for anything. read more

Top-notch mechanics, reliably good recommendations on new equipment (very helpful when I was in the market for new wheels last year), and willing to go the extra mile for a customer. Went by last Sunday morning when the store would normally be open, but they were closed for the holidays. The owner worked on my bike anyway and a half-hour later, I was ready to roll, even though it would have been easy for him to write up some kind of work order and tell me that a mechanic would look at the bike on Monday. This was my 1st experience in any cycle shop & I can't imagine ever going anywhere else. Yes the work they perform is the most important aspect & it's top notch, I walked in with a inoperable bike and walked out with what feels like a whole different bike. Besides the excellent service they made me feel like I been coming here for years. From something as simple as the coffee to the education of where all the banners & jerseys care from, I felt like I knew those guys for years when I've only known them for 45 mins at the most! Moved here from out of state and needed somewhere to take my 2 bikes. The staff seemed knowledgeable and willing to help, if and when they weren't tied up with other customers. I was able to get one bike fixed up on the spot and they kept the other over night. The prices for service were reasonable, I didn't feel like they were trying to sell me everything in the store, and they seemed relatively open to spending a few extra seconds explaining the products i asked about even though i was pretty clear that I had no intent on buying extras at the time. I would certainly go back, and have been back in a few times since moving here. I wouldn't however go on the weekends...it can get kind of crammed in there. but it looked as if they were trying to help folks as fast as there numbers would allow... read more

Awesome Experience!! My old man and I brought our old Trek bikes in. Both of our tires were flat and the bikes were dirty from sitting around for years! My dad wanted to get new tires , which they were able to order right away without any sales pressure! Brandon put my bike up on the rack and inflated the tires and oiled my chains. He told me my bike was in excellent shape for a 20 year old bike and even took it out for a test ride for me! The staff here is phenomenal and is just the kind of place you want to take your bike to have serviced. They were extremely nice to both me and my dad and did not even charge me for checking out my bike! read more

I had a horrible experience here recently. I had a very worn tire and a hole in my tube. I tried patching the tube myself and it kept popping, so I decided to just replace the tubes and tired on both wheels. I brought it to The Bicycle Place on August 21 as soon as they opened. They said it may take 10 days - much longer than I was expecting, but they said that because this was an easy job maybe it would be quicker. End result: They finally were "done" with it yesterday, Sept. 5, 15 days later. When they called they said they didn't have the tires I wanted in stock, so they just patched the tube that was torn (I had already done this myself.) My wife went to get the bike, and by the time she got home the tire was flat, just from sitting on the bike rack on the back of our car. Bottom line: I waited 15 days for something simple that they weren't able to fix. They never told me they didn't have the parts or that it might take longer. I couldn't bike for 15 days, and now I have to start over trying to fix this issue, which may well take me another week or so. They did only charge me $24 which isn't worth my time to call them to complain or get a refund, I'm upset about the huge loss of time, lack of communication, and inability to fix the problem. read more

Two excellent experiences; friendly, knowledgeable staff. I'm not sure why there are so many low ratings on here, but it's compelled me to write a review, which I rarely do anymore. We just bought two bikes from here, and I have to say that our experience was excellent. John helped us out, and he was friendly, knowledgable and easy to work with. He listened well to what we were looking for and helped guide us to some bikes that would work for us. No up-sells, no pressure, no b.s. Gave us a fair price, below MSRP, and got our bikes from the manufacturer quickly, before promised. We went back to pick them up, and we also bought locks and bells, and the other staffer who helped us (whose name I didn't get) was also very friendly and helpful - same deal. This is my second bike to buy from them - I bought one when they were at their old location (that one was stolen), and it's what brought be back to them this time. I'd recommend. I've not experienced their repairs or anything like that, but my experiences with purchasing were great. read more

I also went on here looking for a quote for three bikes for my dept. knowledgable staff and friendly enough! My only question is why when I was trying to get three bikes and associated gear.....not even a little price break....none!! They were way more for the same bikes as other shops near my house!! Ok!! No worries!! Its close to work so it convenient to pop in and grab something when ya need it! I don't know if I would make it "my" bike shop....but it'll do!? I woulda have more stars if the prices were more competitive and willing to work better on prices!! I'm not one to haggle very much, just give me your best price and alls well!! I amble into The Bicycle Place fairly often, as it sits between one of the best delis in DC (just over the border) and a great food co-op. I purchased my daughter's first bike there and found the staff to be incredibly patient, (two kids, under 5 running amok, and everyone was smiles. Tight smiles, but smiles nonetheless) and knowledgeable. I've since brought my cylco-cross in for repairs and check-ups and look forward to chatting about two-wheelers with the folks behind the counter who clearly love what they do. Happy to say that I haven't run into the attitude that I see reflected in the filtered set of reviews here. read more

The dilemma started over 3 weeks ago dropping off a bike for a basic tune up. Heavy set Salesperson yelling at Customers who were lining up to drop off bikes for not lining up properly. Right then and there a few Customers packed up their bikes and left and we should have to. But we made the mistake of waiting and leaving the bike. So a guy named Shawn (very nice guy) checked us in and said it would be two weeks. Called the shop 2 1/2 weeks later still not done said they would call and let us know. 3 weeks later called again not ready but said it should be ready soon. Going on 4 weeks stopped in today, no good maybe Sunday. At this point I'm thinking about the show 'What Would You Do' So after about 60 seconds of thinking about it I asked for the Bike back and went on my way. Once again the young Salesman that helped me was very polite and apologetic. This was last time I would be pulling in the driveway of this Bike Shop. My biggest regret is that I didn't go by my first instinct when that Salesperson was yelling at Customers and take the Bike elsewhere. read more

This is simply a great bike shop. Regardless of whether you are a weekend rider, first time rider, parent buying a birthday present, or a seasoned racer or commuter, the people at this shop will listen to your needs and meet them. You can't get this kind of service from Amazon. I agree with the other reviewer who said it is like the bar in "Cheers." If you are not is a hurry, there a couple of big TV's in the back by the repair shop where you can sit and watch the Tour de France, or football games or whatever. Dressing room and bathroom are clean spacious. It's a little out of the way to find the first time, but well worth it. I suspect the obscure real estate helps keeps the prices reasonable. read more

I have just had a wonderful experience buying a new bike at Bicycle Place. I was planning to buy my bike at another store but it was far away from my home so I decided to give Bicycle Place a try. I was immediately greeted by John who answered my questions and let me try a few bikes (no driver's license required). Some bike store staff quickly loose interest when they learn that you are not going to buy your bike that very day; but not John. What really blew me away was when. on my way out, I started talking with another staff person about electronic shifters. He suggested that I try them out and put pedals (to match my cleats) on a really nice bike (a Seven with carbon wheels) for me to try. As I was leaving for my ride, he asked me to be careful because the bike was his own bike! I later learned that I was dealing with Mike, the owner/manager of the store. How many bike store managers would let you test ride their own bike? When I came back on another day to buy my bike, John and Mike helped me select the options. At times they talked me out of more expensive options that they felt were either not worthwhile or good for me. When I picked up the bike, they took the time to adjust it to fit me. I also brought in another bike for repairs and John went over the options with me. I found that the mechanics are good guys who know their stuff without having an attitude. I feel as though the staff at Bicycle Place are friends rather than adversaries. The store is located in an out of the way commercial area that does not get a lot of casual passer by customers. This is probably an advantage for the serious customer because the staff will have more time to spend with you. read more

Unlike a lot of shops that deal with high-end bikes, though, they're completely down to earth and have none of that elitist attitude. They'll take care of the equipment and services needed for any type of rider, and deliver it with honesty and kindness. read more

Every now and then you get reminded why you do business with a place for 45 years. Yes 45! I went in today all set to spend any amount they asked for to replace my saddle. Getting old, fat and out of shape isn't a good recipe for cycling. I recently started to ride again and was finding it really painful. Looking online at the price of saddles, I was prepared. What I wasn't prepared for was Mike just adjusting the height of my seat and solving the problem. When I asked how much? He looked at me like I was nuts and said "For adjusting the seatpost" and didn't charge me a thing. He said if this didn't work we could switch tire sizes to a lower pressure tire that would provide some more cushion. Still, he wasn't pushing new tires on me either. I defy you to find a better quality more honest bike shop in the area. I doubt seriously that you will find one. read more

This is my favorite local bicycle shop. I've been riding for 30 years and typically perform my own mechanical work but bikes have become more complicated over the years. After recently helping me solve an elusive mechanical problem and other visits over three years, it's time for a review of this business. When I am stumped by an elusive problem, the shop gladly fixes the bicycle, usually on the spot, for a very reasonable price. (Don't expect instant repairs on a busy weekend.) As far as bicycle inventory, this shop has everything. They feature casual bikes, kids bikes and also have a following among serious riders (the 'racer types'). I've sent several friends to this shop and they couldn't be more pleased. The main mechanic (Pretty sure he's the owner), is certified by Shimano and he is an endless source of knowledge and advice. Top service and a friendly staff; this shop is the real deal. read more

I brought my bike in a little after noon today to have both tires and tubes replaced, and to have it looked over for whatever else might need attention. I approached a young man in the front of the store, told him what I needed and was directed to the repair area toward the back of the store . I walked over, stood by my bike and looked around while waiting to be approached. To my right was a man in a Bicycle Place (BP) shirt who was chatting with a customer about what gear to cruise in and such. In front of me was a guy typing at a computer, and toward the back another guy who might have been a mechanic. After a minute or so had gone by I started looking more closely to try and figure who was in charge. The guy to my right appeared to be older than the others, maybe a manager. The guy at the computer? I assumed he was an employee, but couldn't see if he had the BP shirt on. Further toward the back was a customer and beyond that I had little chance of catching anyones attention. From where I was standing I could have reached out and tapped the first two guys on the shoulder. I wasn't hiding behind the comic book rack. After another minute of standing there without acknowledgement, verbally or otherwise; no eye contact or nod, I began to wonder if they were accepting new customers, and if so, did I really want to become one. I decided I didn't, wheeled my bike around and started out of the store. Only then did the conversation between the BP employee on my right and the" what gear should I cruise in ?" guy go quiet. I am reasonably certain that no one in that place has a clue as to why I left. read more

My boyfriend and I decided on a taking a last minute ride on New Years' eve, unfortunately, my brakes were in really poor condition. We took the bike to TBP and a really nice gentlemen by the name of Mike was incredibly helpful. He took a look at my bike, accessed the problem and addressed right away. Turns out my brake cable needed to be replaced but he was able to apply a lubricant that fixed the problem. I think of all the things he could have done i.e. suggest we leave the bike and he would attend to it later or charge me and arm and a leg to replace the cable (which would have cost more). Anyway, I certainly appreciate how knowledgeable and helpful he was. read more

This place is fantastic! I'm not a regular cyclist, but I had an old bicycle I hadn't ridden in 6 years that I needed to get in working condition. They fixed the bike and charged me less than they initially quoted me. There was one small issue with one of my tires that was a little too big, but I brought it back and they replaced the tire for free. Additionally, they replaced two of my tubes that went flat for free, even though their work had nothing to do with the flats. They didn't even charge me for the tubes. The staff was very friendly and worked quickly. Excellent service! read more

I have been the Bicycle Place for the last 18 years, ALL what I can tell you, Mike Butchko is the most honest bike shop owner ever, He will me make you feel like family to him and his wonderful staff. I purchased over 8 bikes from him, He will go out of his way to get me what I want, He will never over charge you for anything, actually He will tell you what you need and not need for your smooth ride. First of all, I am an avid cyclist for 20+ years and I own several high end bikes, raced across the country, hail from California. I spend between $4-6K a year on cycling, yep, I have a great wife! I went to the store 10am this morning with hopes to have some help from a mechanic to fix 2 minor problems before my race tomorrow which starts 7am. 1. Rear derailleur tune up = few mins 2. Rear wheel truing, off by 11/5 inches within 4-5 spokes. = 10-15 mins I wanted a mech to fix it because I need to do some preparation and riding for tomorrow race. The mechanic said it will take one week... I ride 3X a week huh. I asked if there is a way for them to fix by the end of the day. He spoke with the manager and he was condescending, said they are willing to fix it for $200... WTF.... I told them" This is the way to gain and treat a new customer like this". Excellent overview of bike options. I was weary of buying a bike as a first timer but they made it so easy to find a bike that fit my needs. I ended up leaving with a bike that has a warranty, is great for trails and the street. Not to mention, they do tune ups too. I bought a bag for my keys but it's on the small side so I can't put my phone in it. Pretty good overall. read more

I have been a customer of BP for 5 or 6 years. I do a lot of work on my own bike. I come there for advice and help with odd problems I can't figure out. One situation was my Xtracycle was having problems with the internal hub gear mechanism. The mechanic was very helpful and waived any charge. I went to their new location a couple of times and really like it. I also like their periodic "yard sales" they used to have in the back parking lot. Of the 3 shops I've been to in this area this is my favorite. I still have to check out the one in Takoma Park. read more

The Bike Place is a wonderful store with real roots in the community. I have bought 4 bikes there over the past 15 years. Mike, the owner, has a huge amount of expertise in cycling and has great advice for customers at all levels. When I was bike shopping, they let me try several bikes out for 30-45 minutes at a time. Since they are located just off Rock Creek park, this means you can try the bike out on real roads, not just a parking lot. Pepper is a really sharp mechanic. He does a great job of thinking of the big picture, not just trying to make a quick few bucks on repairs. You are going to have to drive 30-45 minutes to find as good a mechanic. The Bike Place sponsors a lot of community activities. In the summer they have several bike swaps in the back parking lot, they sponsor a wonderful racing club & ride, and they provide free bike repair and swag each year at NIH on Bike to Work day. These guys are the real deal. read more

This review is based on one experience with their service department. I do most of my own basic maintenance--change pads, tires, chain, etc. I hadn't yet changed shifting cables, but I bought the parts and intended to do the work. But then my job became more hectic and weekend time became scarce. So i called Bicycle Place and asked what they would charge for labor on the install of the shifter cables. I was told $25 for the pair over the phone, but when I came to the shop, a different person told me $25 per side. I thought I had been clear, but maybe there was confusion--fine. I also had bought new cork and since you have to take off the cork to replace the shifting cable on bar end shifters, I thought they could go ahead and put that on for me. They said sure, but then wanted to charge me $20 for the install. To be clear, they had to put the cork back on anyway, it was just a matter of whether they were putting on the old or new cork. So I said I would do that myself. I asked them to take a look at the spring tension on one of my brakes, which was stubbornly not springing back from the rim. When I picked the bike, the first thing I noticed was that the cable guide had been left out of the cable hook on the brake. I noticed it quickly and fixed it, but that was the first sign of sloppy work. On the ride home, I noticed my rear derailleur wouldn't shift into any of the larger cogs on the rear set (the easier gears). What became clear is that they hadn't bothered to adjust the tension of the rear cable. It was a 5 minute fix, but i shouldn't have had to do it.
