First time visiting this location and it will not be our last. 2 of us walked in with no reservation and asked the hostess (Daisy I think) if we could get a table for 8 and that we were waiting for the other 6 to show up. She said it wouldn't be a problem and put our name on the waitlist. We headed in to sit at the bar and we were promptly greeted by 2 bartenders. As we waited for the others to arrive, we both got a drink. Within 10 minutes the others showed up and our table was ready. Cam, who was one of the bartenders, waited on us. She was phenomenal. Great service from beginning to end. Daisy set up a spot for us and everything was excellent. The restaurant and bar area were both clean and comfortable and all of us enjoyed our meals and drinks. I have eaten here quite a few times. While they don't use the best pasta (which is why you feel bloated and tired after eating here) the food was always flavorful and good. Due to the owners not updating their hours, my friend and I went to dinner a bit before 9. (Their website and all map apps say they are open till 11 - apparently they now close at 10:30 and their kitchen 40 minutes before that). While the service we received was great, the food was frankly disgusting. I had a chicken Marsala which is usually two chicken breasts covered in Marsala sauce and mushrooms on a large bed of spaghetti. Instead I got what maybe was a single breast on a bed of fettuccine with barely any sauce and literally two pieces of mushroom. The taste was god awful and it did not sit right in the stomach later that evening. My friend got a Stromboli which was barely cooked through with wet dough in spots and barely anything inside. Now, the drinks. I don't know if the bartender just didn't care that evening or if we were being retaliated against for coming in "late" (again their own website says they are open till 11 pm we came in a few minutes before 9 pm) but my first drink had no liquor in it - $12 drink mind you. The second drink I ordered I switched it up and got a basic gin and tonic because no way they could mess that up - spoiler: they did. It was tonic with LITERALLY a splash of gin. My apologies if we came in late but if it was going to be such an inconvenience for you I would've preferred you turned us away. Instead, you took our money, gave us old food that wasn't even remotely close to what the menu states it is. No bread. Shit drinks. All at a top tier price for this area. That was my 9th or 10th time dining at the black olive. It was also my last. read more

We ordered cheese stuffed garlic knots with marinara. They were wonderful and the marinara was great. My husband ordered the pepperoni roll with an Alfredo dipping sauce on the side. The pepperoni roll had a buttery garlic outside. That was amazing. The bread was cooked perfectly. I tried it and that was probably my favorite. I wish we would've ordered one to go for dinner. I ordered the shrimp scampi. It was very good. My only complaint was a scam. Was they put cold tomatoes in the center. They need a little work on their organization, but I would highly recommend this place and if I live near here, I would eat here frequently. The food is fresh. Everything's wonderful. We were looking for a nearby restaurant and found the Black Olive within a mile of the house. We looked up the menu on-line and found an amazing amount of items that looked delicious. We found the ambience very nice and the service was excellent. We were checked on often and found there were a plethora of items to choose from that I have not seen on any other restaurants menu. I ordered an amazing dish with chicken and shrimp on pasta with a white sauce that had a pleasant amount of spice. The helping was so large that I could only eat half and took the rest home. I am not from the area and were just visiting friends, but I will go out of my way to visit this restaurant again when I'm in the area. read more

I've heard so many great reviews about The Black Olive from different people and social media groups; the hype is real! I visited the Downtown Johnson City location with a friend, who also had previously visited here, for a lunch date. We were seated immediately and our server, Dale, was AMAZING!!! We enjoyed our interaction and conversation with him. He definitely made our experience there memorable. He's an asset to the establishment. Now the food... starting with the Garlic Knots; my eyes nearly came out of their sockets, I wasn't expecting them to be as large as they are; the knots were also very puffy and the pairing of the sauce was delicious! For our entrees, my friend and I ordered Baked Ravioli, Chicken Parmesan and Chicken Milano. Everything tasted like incredible!! If I ate one less garlic knot, I'd make more room for the side pasta of mushroom fettuccine Alfredo. Black Olive is a local group of restaurants that never disappoint. I can take ANYONE to dinner here and not only do they find something they like but they will comment on how good the food is. Calzones and strombolis are amazing, thanks to the bread/crust. There are a ton of delicious dishes, with spicy Alfredo, Gorgonzola pasta, & the chicken Milano topping my list. Also, the garlic Parmesan wings are amazing! You might have to ask for bread, as sometimes the servers bring it and sometimes they don't. Also, try their desserts and salads. The food was 10/10. Service on the other hand, 0/10. We sat at the bar and after a good while of waiting we were greeted by a young lady (bob with a red streak name is cam). Her Attitude was HORRIBLE. She questioned my wife when she told her she wanted a glass of wine instead of the (super sweet) drink she got. Well they did a fantastic job, the steaks were cooked to order and most people ordered medium rare, and they were perfectly done. EDIT: Additional family members have gone here, and say that the tables and floor are very sticky. And that the service is bad. So, apparently , I didn't have a unique experience. Plus, I have read how they have treated their neighbors. Adios!! While I want to like this restaurant, it has some issues. The tables and floor were sticky. Yikes. The servers are not attentive enough. The enjoyment of my food, was somewhat offset by the person who was "bussing" the tables. It was ridiculously invasive. We were barely finished, and she was grabbing our plates (randomly, and not at the same time), reaching across in front of us, scraping any leftover food onto one plate (yuck) AT the table, loudly stacking them, etc. I have never seen this happen to such an extent. It is a very low-rent practice. I likely won't go back. Note: Servers should never start removing plates until EVERYONE has completed their meal. This is standard restaurant etiquette. Granted, chain restaurants in general have destroyed the dining experience. And NEVER ask, "Are you still WORKING on that?" UGH. It is interesting, that on a Friday (7 PM) evening, the place was almost empty, although downtown JC was quite crowded. (Which always surprises me, because downtown is not necessarily a pleasant spot, no matter how hard they try.
