We ordered the onion strings and they were delicious. Also a very large serving. My son got the kids shrimp basket with fries and ate all of the shrimp. I had the spicy chicken sandwich. It wasn't overly battered and the spice was good. I'd definitely get it again. I got the mac and cheese and my son ate all of it. My husband had the fried catfish and fries. Good vibe and decor, back patio is lovely and shaded. When we walked in for lunch, there were only two other tables sat. We were greeted promptly and with genuine cheerfulness. Unfortunately, when we started ordering we were left with a bad taste... my spouse was only interested in the frog legs. When he ordered, we were advised they didn't have any. A nearby waitress overheard and proclaims, "yes, we do, I watched them clean a whole batch yesterday." Back to the kitchen, but no frog legs. Bummer. Moving on to Catfish, they only offered a 1pound portion or a kids meal. We asked to have a single adult size portion, but they would not accommodate. So on to shrimp and grits, which were available. This place is a must when in the area. We came by twice during our short visit. The chicken tenders are brined over night leaving them incredibly tender and juicy. My husband tried the spicy yard bird and said it was juicy and full of flavor. If you are looking for something light, this probably isn't for you but otherwise it's delicious. While we were on vacation, we were told to give The Blue Rooster a try. The waitress was very friendly, and our wait for a table was short. We sat a picnic style tables with white butcher paper for a table cloth. I had the chicken strips with coleslaw and my wife had the red beans, fried squash with coleslaw too. Iced tea was great too!! Nope. I was hopeful. I like the sign on the door about being nice to the employees that actually show up to work. I am assuming because of that they changed their serving style. You are seated, given a menu, then you must go to the counter to order, then they bring out your food. The food was not very good, it was pretty pricey, no one comes around for refills without taking your drink the counter. We had the family style fish and crawfish. The crawfish was over cooked and mushy and the fish was SUPER fishy tasting. The fried pies were super spicy, not sure what happened there. No one, besides the bartender, was friendly. Our family visited this restaurant after zip lining down the road. Our family was promptly greeted and seated on the patio outside. It was a beautiful day and the breeze was just right. We placed our order from the QR scan and our food arrived quickly. We ordered the one pound chicken tenders. It came with approximately 9 chicken tenders and our family of 4 shared it. It also came with two sides and we chose the fried okra and French fries. The waitstaff was quick to check in and refill drinks. All the food was delicious! We ordered 2lb. family style fried catfish $20.00 & a shrimp basket $12.00 (two sides + hush puppies included). Plus 4 soda drinks & 4 fried pies: $80.00 including tip out the door for 2 adults and 2 teens. The food was fresh and lightly fried (not a greasy mess). We ordered 2 cherry pies, 1 apple and 1 coconut (includes a scoop of vanilla ice cream). The cherry was the best! When we are back in this area we will return. Our getaway was to include only a couple of restaurant meals. I researched well and chose The Blue Rooster as one of those. The MAIN reason that was our choice is that they advertised crawfish. I love crawfish and look for any opportunity to have some. We asked about crawfish availability as soon as we saw our waitress. She said they had them, and we placed our orders. She came back to the table and explained that, since they had just opened, it would take 20-30 minutes to get the crawfish ready. That was fine, and we were fine with that to get what we wanted. The waitress came back in a few minutes to tell us that the crawfish may not be ready at all. She had me choose something else on the menu as a backup, but only, I said, "if the crawfish definitely aren't available." Nothing else really looked inviting, with the prospect of having crawfish. I chose the catfish meal as second-best. The waitress brought our food, and put the catfish basket in front of me, with a thin apology. About 20 minutes later, I saw trays of freshly-boiled crawfish presented at seemingly every table. We had obviously been misled, and this dishonesty tainted our visit. The only reason that I have given more than one star on this review is that the waitress was attentive and friendly. I don't think that she was in on the bait-and-switch. Also, the food we did get was good (once my wife sent back her chicken and dumplings for being cold!). My family's vacation money is precious, and we choose carefully how to spend it. Something about the batter makes their fried chicken extra delicious! Probably some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. It's strange that you have to order the tenders by the pound but we decided that was a good way to have left overs for our picnic the next day. They were still almost as good then. The fries have a slight jalapeño flavor with just the right amount of crispness. Unfortunately the fries aren't as great texture as a leftover the next day so don't plan for saving some, just eat them up when fresh, warm & crispy. Don't be deterred by a line. You order in that line then get seated & pick up your order when called to the back window. My kids traditionally love chicken tenders and they happily gobbled these up without much encouragement from me--total win there, Blue Rooster!! My husband got the fried shrimp basket and I decided to try the fried catfish basket--another thing I've never eaten before. Both were absolutely delicious!! I usually hate tarter sauce but this one was wonderful and tasted excellent with the hot fried fish. There were hush puppies and fries that were equally as delicious. Finally had to round out my meal of firsts with a fried pie to go (yup--never had a fried pie either!
