The price quoted was a lot with a 10 week wait! But after they explained what repair entailed and what to look for when purchasing a BIble that lasts, I understood. I didn't get the name of the person that spoke to me, but she had excellent customer service skills and she used them, taking time to explain the process so very kindly. Amazing experience. Candice & Co. are a top shelf, first rate operation, and came through above and beyond the call of duty. If you want a quick-and-dirty commercial fix, this is not your place. But if you are looking for a European time machine that will take a beloved book back to what it was or even better, this is the spot for you. We came to the Book Doctor with a small devotional, quite honestly a lost cause with no cover or binding and several severely damaged pages. We were hoping for some sort of cover and binding to preserve it since it is of great sentimental value and over 90 years old. What we received back was a gorgeous gem, a true made-to-order family heirloom. Not only was the cover beautiful, the binding is a work of art and pages we thought were lost forever were delicately and expertly restored. We stand amazed. Again, if you expect to do it on the cheap and have it by next week, forget it. I just got my Bible back today and it took a little longer than I had expected, but I am so satisfied with the investment and the results! The Book Doctor did an outstanding job on my very well warn Bible. I had expected that the margins would have been reduced, and all of my notes would've been gone, but it was completely the opposite, not only were all of my notes intact but many of the pages that were missing had been replaced with the exact scriptures that were required. Overall we were very pleased with the service we got. I recently took my wife's Bible in to get the cover redone. This was the same Bible she has read from for 20 years, so needless to say it was special. Her old cover had completely fallen off and a lot of the pages were starting to wear. We took it in to pick colors and everything and they were super helpful in picking types of covers, colors, and other options. The price we were quoted was very reasonable, imo. This is a first class operation with a lot of Old World charm. Located on Davis Street in Oak Cliff in a building that has an old world look to it it was refreshing to find people who do book restoration the old fashion way. I came here today because I have several books that I had stored in my attic that for some reason squirrels got to. Some of them are valuable enough that it is worth my while to consider restoration of them and so I came in for a consultation. The woman that helped us was very friendly professional and full of information and was able to use sample books in the store to kind of give us an idea of not only what they can do but how much it would cost. Over the past several years, I've taken a number of damaged/misused books to Candace and her staff and have always been pleased with the results. Two things I've learned: repairs (whether if be re-binding, re-casing, adhesive removal, etc.), can generally substantially improve the look and/or life of a book. It's important to remember you can't make an old book new again. Improve and repair, yes indeed, but understand they can do great work but as a general rule, miracles are outside of their abilities. The other thing I've learned is to be patient. Quality work takes time; it's not an overnight thing and may actually take several weeks to complete. With so far artisans now working in the book repair field, these guys view the time taken to do a job professionally and well ahead of the speed some of us would like to see. If I could give 0 stars I would! These people BUTCHERED a family heirloom Bible - it literally looks like they patched it with electrical tape. To add insult to injury, they charged $238 plus my $25 to ship it to them with signature confirmation, for something I could've done myself for $5. AND, sent this in August for Christmas present, didn't get it back until May!! The owner was extremely rude when I emailed that I just needed it back because they had it almost a year at this point. I sent an email after I received my butchered Bible, stating I was disappointed in work and you guessed it....crickets. They never call back or follow through, overpriced and RUDE. Candice is the worst. I was so excited that a Texas company would do this repair, now I'm wishing I had sent it to NY or basically ANYWHERE else at this point. They RUINED this heirloom. We can never get that back. Hopefully others will see this and not trust them with your sentimentals!! The only thing that could've been worse was if they lost it entirely, but ruining it as they did just breaks my heart. I ordered a 1st edition, signed copy of The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks and wanted to have it converted from a hard-back book to a leather-bound book. Nice to know there's a place to repair or restore a family heirloom like our childhood book. We took my father in laws beloved bible in for a new cover and repairs. It was torn and pages were ripped and the binding was falling apart. The bible was completely repaired, his notes that he had hand written over many years as a minister were all still intact. This place is such a gem! I was amazed to find out they do all of the work in their shop and everything is done by hand. I brought my father in law's bible in for a new cover. He is a retired minister and this was his favorite and most used bible. The cover was ripped and cracked, the pages were coming out and several were torn. They were able to repair the pages and the binding and replaced the cover with beautiful navy blue leather. I originally called The Book Doctor to ask them about a rush restoration on an antique bible that had pages starting to fall out. I had called around to a few other restoration services and was shocked by the astronomical prices. Finding the Book Doctor was like a breath of fresh air. They are very reasonably priced. I live in Tennessee and was planning on shipping the book to them in Texas, but needed the restoration to be completed on an extremely short time line. The woman on the phone told me that they regrettably would not be able to restore my bible by the time I needed it back. This is where I was really impressed, she went above and beyond and gave me some suggestions to other restoration services and various other places I could look to find someone who could perform my expedited restoration. It really showed me that they care about the customer by assisting me in finding someone who can perform the restoration under my harsh time constraint.
