The Wild Detectives had been on my Dallas bucket list for years, so I was quite excited to finally make my way to the Bishop Arts District and experience it for myself. First of all, the Bishop Arts District itself is incredibly charming. Block after block of unique shops ranging from bookstores and bakeries to candle shops, candy stores, coffee spots, and little boutiques. It's exactly the kind of neighborhood I loveeeee exploring while traveling and if I lived in Dallas, I'd probably frequent this area often. As for The Wild Detectives, the concept alone immediately appealed to me...bookstore meets cafe meets bar meets restaurant. That combination will pretty much always grab my attention. I love to read, I love to eat. The space has a pretty relaxed, community oriented vibe, and during my Saturday morning/early afternoon visit, there were plenty of people working, reading, chatting, and hanging out both inside and on the patio. My one slight disappointment was that the bookstore side itself was smaller than I expected and didn't have quite as extensive a selection as I had imagined. That said, I still managed to leave with a few great additions for my ever growing TBR pile. Overall, this was a worthwhile stop and one I may revisit the next time I'm in Dallas. read more

We were looking for a coffee shop as visitors who were not too familiar with the Dallas area. Saw that they had a book collection and we were intrigued. In actuality, it was a smaller selection than expected. What they lacked in space, they made up with curation. Still enjoyable to peruse but we were expecting just more books to shop from! The space had an overall cozy vibe. A couple of folks were noticeably working on their laptops and others were talking at the bar. There were a few tables inside, a couch, that could host about 6 people comfortably, and more chairs and benches outside. The WiFi does get shut down at a certain time I believe, so I would check in on that. We ordered a couple of coffees - brown sugar latte and sea salt latte. They serve alcoholic drinks as well but we didn't get to try those. I thought that the coffees were light on the caffeine but they tasted as expected. The brown sugar had the right amount of sweetness and the sea salt had a hint of salt without it being too salty. I would expect to come here more as a casual hangout. If you're pressed for time, you may have to be more assertive depending on how many baristas are working because we only had one helping us that day. Since we were not in a hurry, we did not mind the wait but we did have to wait for a while for our coffees. read more

Such a cozy and welcoming atmosphere! I love a good cafe bar with a book selection. Needless to say, I've had a few book club meetings here. They have an indoor area with seating to accommodate small and larger groups, as well as a larger table for a big group. They even have outdoor seating in the back with plenty of tables too. While I have yet to try a drink from here, the vibes alone keep bringing me back. The location isn't too bad either, being perpendicular to Bishop Ave. The parking isn't an issue either, I've come during Bishop Bazaar and Sunday brunch hours and would still score some parking. read more

I visited just before 6 p.m. and it operates as a café and bar, with books and vinyls displayed throughout the space and available for purchase. I ordered the Spanish gin and tonic and it was excellent. Strong, well balanced, and very flavorful. Easily a 10/10. Staff was friendly and welcoming. The book and vinyl selection is not huge, but it's well curated and unique. By around 7:00 p.m., the space filled up quickly, with a lineup forming and both indoor seating and the patio becoming busy. read more

The bar area is warm wood and the people working were very nice and pleasant. Although, we were book browsing, I would love to come back and spend more time here. With a decent selection of books, in both English and Spanish, you can purchase something to enjoy a caffeine or boozy drink with. I went in on a Thursday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised by their happy hour: buy a book, get a drink. So I enjoyed a nice local lager with my book. This place is a very interesting place -- it's a bar, coffee shop, and a bookstore, all in one. I don't think I've ever seen a place of interest like this, honestly -- or anywhere, for that matter. Upon coming here after not having been to this place for about five years, there's one thing that really hasn't changed: the fact that they do the unplugging of WiFi and electronics on the weekend, and at night, they do poetry night or open mic nights to let people from all over the metroplex join in on building community and artistry. After all, it is in the heart of the Bishop Arts District, ain't it? On the coffee side of things, they also locally source their beans from other coffee owners in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, which makes it extra special for the locals and for the people visiting. I ordered a "Milk & Honey" kind of latte, and honestly, it did NOT disappoint at all. It was by far one of the best lattes I've EVER had on this trip. The variety of liquor they had was INSANE -- as you can tell by the pictures, they included quite a bit in there, and there were even people getting drinks while they were at it. This place is so cool! A book store, coffee shop, bar, and community space all in one?!?!? So awesome! They are located off of bishop arts in a house converted to business in the neighborhood! The staff is cool and attentive. I came here to work, but found it that they cut wifi at around 6:30 pm, so get there earlier if you need it. I got a dirty chai latte, but it wasn't my favorite. It tasted artificial and a little burned. If i come back, it will be to go to the bar area for a drink, to try their drinks out. Still, this place is so cool! EXCELLENT vibes in here - only reason I'm taking off a star at all is just how crowded it is (like it's hard to get a table/seat). I love the concept though with the full bar; I had a lovely cocktail called the "war of roses" (it was pink and did taste like rose!). It wasn't very big but it was suuuper good.They have a nice outdoor patio with live performers/speakers; it is HOT out there in summer. They do have books, it's a limited selection but still several bestsellers and quirky options. I was so excited to finally check out Wild Detectives. I've heard nothing but good things. As soon as I walked in, I was instantly charmed. The space is beautiful and effortlessly cool. It felt like a safe, creative hub where community, conversation, and culture collide. I took a few moments to peruse the shelves and take in the vibe, and I was honestly ready to make this one of my go-to Dallas spots. When I got to the counter, I was really looking forward to trying the Texas Sun -- a cocktail inspired by Leon Bridges (a favorite). But when I went to order, I was asked for my ID. No problem -- I'm in my early-mid 30s and completely understand the policy. Unfortunately, I didn't have the physical ID on me, but I did have a digital copy in my Apple Wallet that's been accepted at other establishments. They politely declined it, which is totally their right, and again -- no issue there. What did leave a bad taste in my mouth was what followed... or didn't. Once it was decided I wouldn't be served alcohol, that was it. I wasn't offered any other options -- no menu for coffee or food, not even a glass of water. I sat there and allowed my friend to finish what she ordered.It was a pretty disappointing end to what I thought would be a great new experience. First impressions matter. And while I completely support businesses enforcing age verification policies, I also think there's a way to still create a welcoming experience. Sadly, this one missed the mark for me, and it made me second guess whether I'll give Wild Detectives another shot. read more

I like the Wild Detectives for its coziness. The book selection is small but the fact that they have a small book section is something I love. The service is usually mid to be honest and the drinks are coffee drinks. They're nothing amazing but they aren't bad. I'm not a beer person so I've never tried anything from their beer selection. Such a unique place! First of all, I always love to see bookstores that are still in business. Second, this has a creative spin by offering a bar for adults. We had to circle a bit to find some street parking but finally found a spot a couple blocks away. Upon entering, we went over to the bar and ordered. I went with a dirty chai latte which was quite pleasant and a nice wake me up. The drink wasn't too sweet and liked the shot of espresso which made it stronger. Bookshop of my dreams. The Wild Detectives is a bookshop, bar, and cafe in the Bishop Arts District! We were strolling along and wanted to find a spot to grab a drink and enjoy the weather so we asked around and one local recommended this spot! We headed straight towards the bar since we knew we wanted a drink- my friend got the aperol spritz while I got the matcha pisco sour. We lucked out and came during happy hour on a weekday which is from 3-6pm and includes cool specials like $3 off cocktails, $2 off wine & tap beer & $1 off food items. If you buy a book during this time, they also have a happy book hour where you get a drink on the house if you buy a book... now that's my kinda happy hour! Since I already bought a book at a different store, I opted out of the book hour but still took advantage of the happy hour. The area itself is super cute with a lot of indoor and outdoor seating. We ended up enjoying our drinks inside in the little nook area. We saw a lot of people catching up or working from here, which seemed like an ideal place to do both. My Matcha pisco sour was really good and actually a bit strong, in the best way. Definitely a different kind of midday pickmeup. It didn't taste much like matcha but definitely a pisco sour. After enjoying our drinks and reading from our books we brought long for the adventure, we took a look around the store. The book collection is curated since the space is small. The 2 female servers here are a vibe! They are chatty, fun and looked like they were having a great time. Line was a smidge long but that just means it's good right? Been here on two separate occasions. Got a coffee since they stop doing espresso martinis at 9:30 (big fail but just know that before you go). The tequila espresso martini is superior to their vodka based one. Not the best I've had, but not the worst. Love the overall ambiance of the store.
