I had the BEST meal here ever. It was the first time i had ever heard of boxty (and im born bred irish - though lived in uk since 3) let alone tried it. It was amazing. The restaurant itself is very popular so either get there early or book a table. Its very simply decorated, nothing fancy and the people who work there are really friendly. Now i will cut to the chase - boxty, what is it? Its a traditional irish potato pancake. Its thin and floppy and they fill it with anything. From traditional irish boiled bacon and cabbage to seafood. I had a seafood boxty and it was amazing. Full Irish menu for 25€. Fairly pricey for the overall quality you receive. The tomato basil soup I had for starters was pretty average, nothing special. The main course, potato dumplings with mushrooms and blue cheese sauce, was very tasty and well cooked. Not impressed by the cheesecake - the warm chocolate cake would have probably been a better choice. The service was surprisingly good and friendly on a busy day. When I heard we were going to Temple Bar for dinner I worried that we were going to wind up in a cheesy faux-Irish-kneesocks-and-pageboy-caps pub with drunken Australians on the doorstep. Then I walked into Boxty House, and downstairs to the candlelit room where my family was seated, and breathed a sigh of relief. For a lively restaurant, it had a remarkably soothing atmosphere -- and after a long day dealing with a screaming, jet lagged baby, this was just what I needed. Most of the dishes incorporate variations of boxty, an Irish potato pancake. Boxty fries (boxty pancake cut into strips and fried) are probably the hands down winner for best fries ever in my life (my one and a half year old, who nearly finished the whole platter single handedly, agrees heartily). The rest of the dishes similarly did not disappoint. In fact, it all exceeded my expectations. We had A LOT (and I mean, a LOT) of smoked salmon while in Scotland and Ireland -- but the "Turf Smoked Salmon" here was probably the best we had our whole trip. It was a thick filet of salmon with a deep smoky flavor, juicy and tender, on a bed of julienned vegetable pickles and capers. We shared it among the table and it was gone so quickly, I considered ordering it a second time for my entree. Glad I didn't, though, because the salmon and mussel boxty main (a stew of awesomeness with boxty dumplings) was even better -- even if it was perhaps a little too salty. It takes a lot to make a stew stand out to me, and taste like more than a monotonous blob of flavor, and this was a definite winner. Bright, fresh, creamy, and briny all at once = love. Drinks: We skipped the cocktails and all went for beer. They don't have Guinness here but the alternative - Murphy's - was perfect. Service: I'm deducting a star for service here, which was hella slow. Not to the fault of our great server - it simply looked like they were way too understaffed for a summer Friday night. We skipped dessert because by the end of dinner, our baby had had enough of restaurants and grudgingly made our way outside into the Temple Bar throng. I was walking around Temple Bar reading menu's, looking for some place to have lunch when a hard rain hit and ducked into the nearest door. Lucky for me that was The Boxty House, which I had seen on a travel show and was on my "to do" list. The place was packed, a good sign, however, being solo I was able to sit at the bar without any wait. It was Sunday, so only the brunch menu was available. I order the poached eggs with salmon, which was heaven on a plate! I enjoyed my meal so much I purchased a couple of boxes of their potato pancake mix, and have replicated it as close as I can at home. The atmosphere is vibrant and the food delicious. Our cabbie recommend this place as we came in from the airport and he was so right. They serve fish and chips with a twist, the fish is smoked first. Goes great with the ales and whiskies. Well, it is definitely a packed place in a busy area of Temple Bar. While we made reservations 1 day ahead of time, which were confirmed, they ended up canceling our reservations the following day about 3 hours prior to our scheduled time, without explanation. Please note that this was for a Monday night in mid-September... I can't imagine how busy they must be on the summer weekends. We did try anyway and the hostess was gracious enough to seat us, so we got a chance to try out boxty, which was good. It is a bustling place, and food was pretty unique. If you do go, make sure to get reservations and have a PlanB in case they get cancelled. read more

Had a wonderful meal here, actually the best meal in Dublin for me. I had the steak was a perfect size, and done to my perfection for medium rare. I have visited Gallagher's many times and it is one of my favourite places to eat whenever I am in Dublin. Located in Temple bar it is the perfect place to go for a meal before a night on the town. Boxty is a traditional irish dish, a bit like a potato pancake, filled with whatever you like really. You can also have colcannon (mashed potatos with cabbage / Kale) or champ (mashed potatos with spring onion) The food is filling & well worth the price. So many folks have already covered things, but I wanted to add my enthusiastic endorsement of a solid meal for a reasonable price in one of the funnest - and probably most touristy - parts of Dublin. Just down the street from the Temple Bar itself, this place is cozy, with solid service and really great "comfort" food. At the risk of repetition, the namesake "boxty" (a potato crepe, filled with - at least what we ordered - delicious savory ingredients) seems hard to pass up...though many of the other menu items appeared equally tasty (based on the looks of the folks surrounding us and enjoying their meals). I'm so glad that we listened to Yelp and checked out this place. We were finishing our tour at Guiness and jumped online quick to decide where to go for dinner prior to a drink reservation we had later that night. Lucky for us and likely because it was a bit early (reservation at 18:30) we were able to get in without any issue. We were seated at a cozy table in the corner with one side the booth and one side a chair, overlooking the bustling area of Temple Bar. The service was great. We enjoyed our server, Iseult, and she seemed to get a kick out of how much we enjoyed our meal. We started with the boxty fries appetizer (DO NOT MISS THESE) and it was so tasty, I immediately started researching recipes to try and duplicate it back home. So tasty with a good amount of salt (lots of our meals had been noticeably lacking salt, but not this) and the dip of mayo, rocket and garlic was another thing I'll replicate - to dip everything in! We had lovely entrees as well as my husband having the sticky toffee pudding for desert and we both enjoyed some good wine - I started with sparking and it came in a beautiful flute with a raspberry floating which made for a lovely presentation.
