Thai pepper and Louisiana cane Old Fashioned
    Jeanne P.

Quaint and tucked to the side / behind Spoke and Hub, you'll find The Brakes bar, an intimate gem with high quality and seasonal cocktails. High quality liquor and a diverse and creative crafting are what you will find here. It's not meant for large groups looking to pound drinks - the drinks are carefully prepared and even use garnishes and elements from their personal herb garden located outside. Staff will recommend something to please your pallet if you guide them with your preferred flavors, and their list of changing cocktails will always provide you with choices. I enjoyed an amazing Thai Pepper and Louisiana Cane Old Fashioned on my visit. The perfect blend included sweet sugar and glorious heat of the pepper. Seating is comfy with a long conversation sofa and tables, barstools, and maybe some additional seating I didn't see. The blackout curtains and shades provide appropriate ambiance. If you're looking for something a little more chill and delightfully intimate, drop in sometime.

OMG... what a yummy spot that has been sleepy secret until NOW…read more... The food is so fresh, authentic and delicious. Dinner starts with complementary chips and salsa that are super yummy. Got the trio dip that has this cheesy gooey queso , corn with herbs and cheese and chunky guacamole. We order the carne asada and poncho mixto. The freshness of the food. I will go back and continue to try a new dishes ! But they also have tacos and burritos. The drinks were good too!!! Service was awesome. Gloria was our waitress and she provided some assistance with the choices made. We ate in the bar area. The ambiance of the restaurant is super cute for a girls night out or a first dinner date or a date night with that special someone.

It wasn't spicy like most salsa that I taste, but it also had a different flavor. I couldn't really put my finger on what the difference was, but it was really good. I ordered the Carne Asada and it was 10 out of 10 for presentation. The dish came steaming, sizzling and smoking as they sat it down and it continued to do so for over a minute. While the steak was cooked properly, medium well as I requested, it was very tough. Maybe it was an angry cow. Regardless, the staff was very attentive. And the service was very fast. Ambience was nice and it felt very comfortable although it was a bit cold so I had to go and get a jacket for my mom and my sister-in-law. I would give them another try the next time I'm in the area. The menu had a few options that I would be interested in.

Apparently, they have an annual limited fixed-price menu ($48) with excellent options over three courses. Unfortunately that option was not available when we dined here in early November. So we went for the pimento cheese balls and I ordered the soup de jour which was a butternut squash bisque. Both items were savory and delicious. The pimento cheese balls is fried and served over some hibiscus pepper jelly which gives a nice sweet kick to the creaminess of the cheese. The bisque is creamy and has a nutty squash punch. We loved both very much! For entrees, I debated between the pork chop and sous vide rabbit. I went with the rabbit since I never had rabbit before (weird right?) and I'm glad I went with it. The rabbit has a nice crispy texture with a gamey taste yet the meat was quite tender when cutting into it. The apple chutney compliments the rabbit well and the butternut squash side and purple cabbage garnish make it a well-rounded dish. My friend/coworker ordered the grilled gulf fish which comes with a creamy risotto. The fish is super tender and pairs well with the risotto with an olive oil finish. We were both satisfyingly stuffed from our meal although we wish we saved room for dessert. Definitely next time! They have an extensive wine and cocktail list. The Strawberry Oaxacan is a favorite along with the Kiwi Daquiri due to the exotic fruit flavors. Sadly I couldn't snap any pictures as I was caught up in sipping my Century Oak Zinfandel. I'm glad they have a Red Zinfandel which is my preferred wine of choice as it's easy to sip and not as full-bodied. Gotta give my friend props for bringing me here. We're already talking about coming here again next time I have an assignment in Baton Rouge. I can't wait!

Once in the restaurant, we went to the bar and got their amazing Golden Gatsby cocktail. It was sweet and fruity and had a nice kick to it. The bartender made great drinks our entire visit. I also got an old fashioned which was great. We ordered the beef wellingtons minis and the duck confit tacos which were very yummy. There were not a lot of people there at all. It was us and another couple. We did not have any long wait times at all which was one of the reasons I chose an earlier reservation time not a time later in the afternoon. The ambiance was perfect for date night and the vibe was very intimate. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a romantic evening with their significant other!

I love that they offer a variety of boards you can share, and their drink options are great too. You can sit inside or outside, and they even have live music on some nights, which adds to the atmosphere. The service has always been great every time I've gone. They also have the cutest merchandise available for purchase. It's a great place for date night, hanging out with friends, celebrating birthdays or anniversaries, or just spending time with family. When you read the reviews below, most people know what this restaurant is and how it works. My…read moreresponse is less harsh about the service or it's overpriced charcuterie board concept. I have lived in BR for 6 years now. Many departments at LSU take guests there and in that time, Building 5 has done nothing to improve its parking lot. The restaurant sits underneath an overpass and the parking is pothole marked unpaved gravel. This means that there is no room for wheelchairs or accommodations for anyone who is differently-abled to get into the restaurant. The whole restaurant makes no room for handicapped persons. On the occasion I did get food, the food is slightly overpriced. All meats were cooked adequately but the food was lukewarm probably owing to sitting in the kitchen under the heat lamp than being delivered promptly. When I have gone, I regularly have to ask for refills on soda as I am the designated driver often for department functions. Servers pay you no heed if you do not buy alcohol. Because I go here because of academic reasons, I would barely go here myself. I've been here many times and found it wanting. It's an ableist place in its infrastructure. It's fine I'm atmosphere as a cocktail bar but would little recommend it to people I call friend.
