    Seafood Chowder
    Heather L.

Stopped by here for a quick snack after exploring Howth. Was craving soup so I got the seafood chowder, boyfriend got the soup of the day which happened to be cream of broccoli and we shared oysters. Soup was full of seafood, flavorful and creamy. Oysters were fresh. Service was great considering how busy they were.

This is a hard review to write. Elle and I have eaten at Crabby Jo's previously in 2022, when we last visited Howth before their by-out/merger with Wrights of Howth. I'm pretty sure the review is still on Yelp somewhere.... I was extremely disappointed with this visit to Crabby Jo's the food and initial service were poor to average. To compare this directly to our last visit; we had an awesome hostess who couldn't fit us in immediately, but said if we came back in 20 mins we would be seated with no problems. We went off and looked at Howth market and returned 15 minutes later and she seated us immediately, no problems, and took our order for drinks and came back quickly with them. Letting us choose what we want to order quickly and efficiently. We ordered fish and chips, which was cooked beautifully, fish flakey and falling apart, with chips/fries delicious all being perfectly accompanied with a guinness. This visit was Ok and the food wasn't great. We stood in line to be seated, to be told we have no tables at the moment, in fact not for 30 minutes. Ok, none of the friendly "you could go and visit a few shops around Howth and come back, and we'll make sure you are sorted when you come back..." No, the host just stood there looking perplexed. I pointed out that we had an elderly gentleman with us who wouldn't be able to stand for 30 minutes before a table was free. He looked flustered and seemed to understand and offered a table outside that we could sit at, that didn't have any heat lamps working and he disappeared inside and came back outside about 2 or 3 minutes later and told us there was a table now available if we wanted to go inside. This is where Crabby Jo's quality of service redeemed itself. We were seated in front of a roaring fireplace in the middle of the dining area. The staff were attentive and took our order quickly enough. As I say Elle and I had been talking about coming back to Crabby Jo's since our last visit raving about how good the food was. This time it was average at best. The fish was over cooked, the chips were soggy and not crispy, the mushy peas had too much mint, the guinness was the best part. Really disappointed is how Elle and I left Crabby Jo's after hyping it up and how much we enjoyed the meal on our last visit. I'm only giving them 3 out of 5 stars for pulling through with the service.

    Seafood linguini and Alvarinho wine.

Unbelievable! Had the linguini seafood and am licking my fingers! My husband had the clam chowder and oysters and was equally impressed. And to top this delicious treat, they have Alvarinho wine. Leo, our waiter, was very attentive. If you're in Howth, you must stop by!

We got there a little too early for lunch but they aloud us to take a seat and get a coffee. Tried an Irish coffee one if my favorite can never complain about some Baileys but I could tell the coffee was a little old no big deal! When the kitchen was open we were able to order some food as someone who doesn't care for fish I sure had to give a good chowder a try! Very tasty very fishy! Great service amazing atmosphere!

Yelp 100 Challenge 2018 - #82/100 Rainy mornings are best shared with friends over a hot breakfast. I had the American style pancakes with streaky bacon and maple syrup, my sister the avocado on toast, and my three friends each had the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. Breakfast is not complete without coffee and warmed milk. The fish market is just next door where you can purchase farmed or wild caught fish. They also have jams, olive oil, wines, grains and pasta when you'd rather cook at home. Restroom was clean and parking was adequate. I was told it can be hectic during peak hours.

This place hit the spot for lunch in Howth! A friend and I had a pint and a starter on the patio. My companion loved her seafood chowder with a variety of fish. And I LOVED the crab claws in butter and garlic sauce. They were so easy to eat, having been pre-shelled too. Neither of us could get enough of the brown bread at this lunch spot. Really good. And we splurged on a thick, fudgy brownie to go.

I was on a Malahide Castle tour when we made a stop in Howth for lunch. I was suggested Crabby Jo's as the place to go and it was no disappointment. I originally wanted to try the Crabby Jo burger but they were all out. The waiter suggested the salmon pasta and I'm glad she did! It was delicious down to the last bite! It's a must, although it was on the Daily special black board if you see it up there, you have to try it.

Nice seafood restaurant on the mainland of Hoath. It's very close to the train and perfect selection for after a ferry ride. It's pretty crowded but getting a seat didn't take long. The waiters are pretty slow and the toilet area is clean but it doesn't smell too good. The red interior with plush couches is very aesthetic. The servings could be a little bigger.

Fish and Chips - so fresh!

BEST FISH & CHIPS I'VE EVER HAD! I was visiting Howth on a sightseeing tour. We only had 25 minutes to explore and take pictures of the harbor. Our tour guide suggested to come to Crabby Jo's, get some takeaway and bring it back on the bus. We did just that! The fish and chips was around €10-11, a little pricey. We saw them flour, batter and throw in the fryer before our very eyes! We waited 5-10 minutes and our food was ready. God was it delicious. The fish was massive. The chips were perfectly cookies and the fish was salty and tender. I was in heaven! This was honestly the best I've ever had.

Awesome! Nice people and good sea food. The fish is soooo fresh, that my fish still had a hook . Real fresh and clean

Excellent service and food. The facilities were clean and the people were very cool! Highly recommend it. We had the crab burgers. Calamari was delightful.

There's a set dishes menu, a smaller tapas menu and also the specials of the day, written on a big blackboard - that our hostess kindly perched on a chair in front of our table, improptu style. In both fixed menus there are many vegetarian and/or gluten free options. The wine list was interesting enough, though not perfect. I managed to find a beautiful spanish Verdejo there, so that must count for something. We were served delicious food and the only thing I can point is that my vegetarian stuffed zucchini had a bit too much cheese, but other than that everything was good and their special of the day, salmon, was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately we were both too full to try the desserts, but at least we got to to wrap our lunch up with a nice espresso.

Since we were on this side of the town, we decided to make the most of it and look for a meal of seafood. I had Octopussy's Tapas bookmarked when researching for the trip, so we decided to stop in for lunch. It was a Thursday at around 1:30, and the restaurant was almost full. It's a very small restaurant and it's mostly high top tables with bar stools, so it wasn't exactly looking baby-friendly, since had our 8-month old and a stroller with us. Luckily, they have a small back room (literally a room that can probably seat 4-6 people) that was available, and they seat us back there. It was nice and cozy, and cute - decorated like you were on a ship. Here is what we ordered: -Carlingford Oysters (served in the shell with fresh lemon) - these oysters were everything! They were big, shucked properly, and tasted super fresh. It didn't need anything but the lemon but they did recommend us trying their housemade hot sauce. We did and we loved it, and ended up buying a bottle to take home. We also ended up ordering some more oysters for dessert (lol) -Seafood Chowder (squid, mussels, smoked coley, & prawns served with homemade brown bread) - this was full of seafood. It is heavy though since chowder is cream-based so I would recommend sharing this, as opposed to ordering one on your own. The brown bread was also very nice -Seafood Paella (paella rice, chorizo, mussels, gambas, squid rings, and smoked coley) - another dish filled with seafood. They don't skimp out here! I could have done without the squid rings (they tasted rubber-bandy, like they're from frozen), and the smoked coley. I'm not a huge fan of smoked foods. I didn't really taste it in the chowder - maybe the cream covered it up, but I was able to taste it more in the paella -Whiskey Scallops (cooked in whiskey butter) - very rich but the scallops were good. You definitely want to dip some of the brown bread in this sauce There were so many other dishes we wanted to try but we had to stop ourselves from ordering too much for two people. Overall, it was a great meal and at these prices for seafood?! You really can't beat it.
