I wanted to love this place but just cannot give it a review higher than 3. I normally do not rate on service because I am not big on it BUT it was non existent and confusing here. The food was overpriced and mediocre at best. Save yourself some money and eat at the chip shop on the main street OR try one of the numerous other places in the area. The shop that is attached is worth a browse though and is filled with so many items you will be tempted to purchase a bag full of treats. This is a hard review to write. Elle and I have eaten at Crabby Jo's previously in 2022, when we last visited Howth before their by-out/merger with Wrights of Howth. I'm pretty sure the review is still on Yelp somewhere.... I was extremely disappointed with this visit to Crabby Jo's the food and initial service were poor to average. To compare this directly to our last visit; we had an awesome hostess who couldn't fit us in immediately, but said if we came back in 20 mins we would be seated with no problems. We went off and looked at Howth market and returned 15 minutes later and she seated us immediately, no problems, and took our order for drinks and came back quickly with them. Letting us choose what we want to order quickly and efficiently. We ordered fish and chips, which was cooked beautifully, fish flakey and falling apart, with chips/fries delicious all being perfectly accompanied with a guinness. This visit was Ok and the food wasn't great. We stood in line to be seated, to be told we have no tables at the moment, in fact not for 30 minutes. Ok, none of the friendly "you could go and visit a few shops around Howth and come back, and we'll make sure you are sorted when you come back..." No, the host just stood there looking perplexed. I pointed out that we had an elderly gentleman with us who wouldn't be able to stand for 30 minutes before a table was free. He looked flustered and seemed to understand and offered a table outside that we could sit at, that didn't have any heat lamps working and he disappeared inside and came back outside about 2 or 3 minutes later and told us there was a table now available if we wanted to go inside. This is where Crabby Jo's quality of service redeemed itself. We were seated in front of a roaring fireplace in the middle of the dining area. The staff were attentive and took our order quickly enough. As I say Elle and I had been talking about coming back to Crabby Jo's since our last visit raving about how good the food was. This time it was average at best. The fish was over cooked, the chips were soggy and not crispy, the mushy peas had too much mint, the guinness was the best part. Really disappointed is how Elle and I left Crabby Jo's after hyping it up and how much we enjoyed the meal on our last visit. I'm only giving them 3 out of 5 stars for pulling through with the service. read more

Highly recommend the seafood chowder, full of different types and flavorful. The Maryland style crab cake was ok, unfortunately mine was a bit burnt and tasted mostly of old bay - I wouldn't necessarily order again. We got there a little too early for lunch but they aloud us to take a seat and get a coffee. Tried an Irish coffee one if my favorite can never complain about some Baileys but I could tell the coffee was a little old no big deal! I had the American style pancakes with streaky bacon and maple syrup, my sister the avocado on toast, and my three friends each had the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. Breakfast is not complete without coffee and warmed milk. The fish market is just next door where you can purchase farmed or wild caught fish. This place hit the spot for lunch in Howth! A friend and I had a pint and a starter on the patio. My companion loved her seafood chowder with a variety of fish. And I LOVED the crab claws in butter and garlic sauce. They were so easy to eat, having been pre-shelled too. Neither of us could get enough of the brown bread at this lunch spot. Really good. I was on a Malahide Castle tour when we made a stop in Howth for lunch. I was suggested Crabby Jo's as the place to go and it was no disappointment. Nice seafood restaurant on the mainland of Hoath. It's very close to the train and perfect selection for after a ferry ride. It's pretty crowded but getting a seat didn't take long. Do not judge a book by its cover when it comes to Crabby Jo's! I was denied by my restaurant of choice in Howth and I think probably the most popular one there Octopussy as I did not have reservations. Craving some delicious seafood, I walked by the row of restaurants in despair and settled on Crabby Jo's for it's more relaxed atmosphere. Well, relaxed is how it look's on the outside. Before I walked in, I immediately judged it as a Joe's Crab Shack/Bubba Gump type of chain, but that is further from the truth! From start to finish, the service was great and like most restaurants I experienced in Ireland, the food comes out fairly quickly. Our server was attentive and gave us all the additional requests we had. The restaurant itself is also well decorated and has a bit of an upscale feel without the prices. The food was spectacular! I ordered the crab cakes which was not breaded but filled with pure seafood glory! The calamari was also so perfect in that it was lightly breaded and not rubbery at all. It was real! Lastly, the fish and chips were just as spectacular. Overall, I am happy I didn't end up at Octopussy and instead found my way to Crabby Jo's! read more

BEST FISH & CHIPS I'VE EVER HAD! I was visiting Howth on a sightseeing tour. We only had 25 minutes to explore and take pictures of the harbor. Our tour guide suggested to come to Crabby Jo's, get some takeaway and bring it back on the bus. We did just that! The fish and chips was around €10-11, a little pricey. We saw them flour, batter and throw in the fryer before our very eyes! We waited 5-10 minutes and our food was ready. God was it delicious. The fish was massive. Situated on the west pier, this is a large but welcoming seafood establishment. The ambiance is warm and classic with plenty of dark high polish woodwork, large windows and a deep inviting dinning room m. There is a small cave like bar in the back to take a pint while you wait for a table. The service is not a rushed (read a little slow, but still professional). The oysters are truly superb, large, tastey, clean but still salty, and fresh. The seafood chowder is an absolute must, filled with fresh hunks of salmon, cod, and other fish as well as muscles and prawns, with a fresh slightly thickened broth. I had the scallops as a main, which was a generously portioned plate, with a nice parsnip, pea purée. The shaved dried chorizo/ prosciutto accompaniment was interesting, but didn't really complement. The scallops themselves were tender, perfectly cooked and not over salted. Would have loved to have tried the large brownies that are in the desert case, but was in a bit of a rush. Too bad, they looked great. A bonus of Crabby Jos was the beer they had on tap was a nice IPA with plenty of what tasted like American hops. Closest thing I've found to a lagunitas this side of the Atlantic. read more

The only reason they got an extra star is due to the Wright's Seafood Chowder, which was really excellent...tons of cod and haddock... Other than that, our waitress had a couple in our group's order wrong, one 2x's even. The food came out at all different times, so 2 in our group had food and were finished before 2 others even got their dinners. We sat for an extremely long time with dirty plates on our table, we ended up cleaning up all the plates and stacking them at the corner of our table. And, after our starters, we never saw our waitress at our table again, she hung out chatting with a hostess at the entrance. We had to start to stand up to leave after waiting 15+ minutes to get our bill. The music was good! Service was extremely bad! The seafood chowder was really good. read more

This place deserves a lot more recognition than it gets! Okay, the decor is kind of weird...but surely a tasty meal can surpass that?! If you like chowder, they do ONE OF THE BEST CHOWDERS in Howth. Thats a heavy statement but its extremely good, loads of meat and not overly creamy! The Dublin bay prawns are also a great starter if you arent into soup! I'm a huge fan of the baked salmon, its super healthy and comes with perfectly cooked baby spuds and veg. Sounds boring but it's cooked so well that I enjoy it every time! The scampi are also great if your going for something a bit heavier, and come with home made chips which are fluffy and what I can only describe as chip perfection! The desserts are nothing special though....just your average brownie and banoffi. Dont get me wrong, they are good, but nothing to rant about. The staff are very friendly but I feel they have not been trained very well. Most of them are really young and can sometimes make mistakes with your orders. I've been here about 8 times and it's happened twice. Other than that, Its a really great place in harbour and I recommend popping in! They do great lunches too! read more

Fantastic sea food and some of the Friendliest service in Dublin. The atmosphere is warm, cozy, and friendly. Located on the pier can mean some amazing outdoor eating in the summer. We tried the special Crabby Mojito and a Guinness (duh!). The Guinness was fresh as it was brewed 20 minutes away, yesterday. My mojito was also delicious; had a nice crisp finish (Prosecco) and the mint/basil muddle was fresh and new. Our dinner was also great. I have been here several times, it's one of my favourite restaurants in Howth. A good selection of dishes, friendly staff. Last saturday we managed to snap up the last table outside in the sun. Service was a bit scatty (eg got to ask for water twice, for cutlery, for napkins etc) Food was just okay. First time I tried the seafood chowder there, and was slightly disappointed...it wasn't very creamy and tasted very carrotty (if that's a word). Our calamari was very greasy. A friend and I came here while spending the day in Howth. After having walked around so much, we were actually starving. The service was fast enough, and the waiters were friendly enough to get us some breads to snack on while waiting for the food. The food was good, your standard Irish seafood place. I had the baked salmon, and my friend had the fish and chips. Both dishes had a ton of oil in them, to the point where we had to wipe them with a napkin. It would be good if they leave them on a paper/napkin before serving to get all that oil out? The decor was nice, and the service was friendly. This was my first experience in Ireland, more specifically in Howth. My friends and I stumbled upon Crabby Jo's fervently asking to see if they could accommodate for nine. The host and waiters were extremely kind and fulfilled our request immediately. The ambiance was comfortable upscale dining, their wine list was extensive with great options for red, white and anything in between. I got a well poured glass of Pinot Grigio, ordered the lobster and crab pasta and eagerly waited in my seat by the fire. The pasta was the perfect portion and left me feeling satisfied and full. The tortelli filled with crab and lobster meat was presented in a large bowl topped in a pink white wine sauce with grilled asparagus. The only reservation I have with the overall enjoyable experience is that the asparagus should have been a better cut. It was treated more like a garnish than a part of the dish itself, and could have been presented in a better way that would have made it edible. Nevertheless, I would eagerly eat here again! read more

So small and cramped, but the food is everything. My madras mussels were by far the nicest I've had! I shared these with my mother who had the deep fried Brie which was cooked to perfection. Three of us at the table and we all went for the same mains after a long look at the menu. Another thing I don't like about this place is the menu is so big that I want everything! On top of the large menu there is also a specials board. So we all went with the surf and turf. I rarely have steak unless I'm certain it's gonna be a good one and I wasn't disappointed. Too full for a dessert I chose a mojito cocktail that was full of alcohol and mint, just how I love it. At €8.50 a cocktail it's actually kinda acceptable because it's so goooood!!! So our staff where amazing but we had a bit of a wait between meals and the waiter apologised and remained amazing by checking on us often. We went to the take-out window. Fish came out fast, good portions but.. No seasoning, greasy, the kid running the cash register must have been new, slow and had to ask others a bunch of questions. He didn't offer napkins or silverware. They had a number of outside tables and seating, but because we ordered take out we could not use them - even though they were empty. There was a single skinny stand-up table that a we had to stand and share with a bunch of other folks. Went here for a spot of lunch with the girlfriend, I had the chicken wings too start & the steak sandwich, the wings where very tasty, not swimming in buffalo sauce but had just the right amount on them, the steak sandwich was 10/10 the steak was cooked perfect, grilled onions & mushrooms on it also, very tasty the horseradish wasn't overpowering was just right, only complaint which I'm only nit picking the bread could have been a little crispy but that's just me finding a flaw, staff & atmosphere is nice, friendly, and I would recommend on a sunny day for any occasion brunch, lunch or dinner, staff very prompt friendly and willing too help if you need extra napkins, water and so on, will definitely be here again! read more

Delicious!! Food was so good i forgot to take some pictures! Three of us rocked in here yesterday evening, they were fully booked but gave us a space at the bar. The staff were so accommodating, super friendly and great banter. They have an unbelievable wine list which is very inexpensive, and a great food menu. The fish is super fresh. My husband and I stopped in on our day tour. We tried the seafood chowder, mussels and crab claws. The seafood chowder was amazing! It had so much seafood in it and was very flavorful. All we added was a pinch of salt and some black pepper. The bread they serve you on the side was perfect to dip in the chowder (if you like to dip your bread in your soup!). Their chips were nice and crispy. Also, I tried their Bellini. Overall, the food was good. Stopped in here for a late breakfast with two friends, as it was reviewed as being in one of the top breakfasts in Howth. An accolade I would question. I ordered the Pancakes & berries, which according to the menu was "Pancakes, Berry Compote, Vanilla Yogurt & Maple Syrup". All true, I'm glad I ordered a side of bacon (essential with pancakes) as I was extremely disappointed when it came out as I was served 3 crepes and a few chopped strawberries. Considering that this cost €9.95, before the bacon, that's a huge profit margin, and a dissatisfied customer. Crepes are not pancakes. In this day & age if you're going to put pancakes on your menu then they'd better be proper full on pancakes, preferably American style, and definitely not French, especially for breakfast.
