One of our favorite things about road trips are the different restaurants we get to try, some are winners some are well not... this one was definitely a winner. Our road trip crew consists of me, my husband, five kids(15,12,12,9,&4) my mother in law, my grandmother, and out of the 9 of us we had ZERO complaints and ALL empty plates. Yall that NEVER happens!!! Everything was cooked perfectly and they were very nice and accommodating, even the locals were very nice. At first glance though we pulled up to this hole in the wall place between a seemingly rundown hotel and a gas station and I won't lie I questioned my decision for just a second, but I remembered some of the best food comes from hole in the wall locations and lucky for us this was one of them. Where to start. Ordered the ribeye with baked potato and salad . Salad was simple and excellent. Everything...including the tomatoes...were fresh and crisp. Steak was slightly over done, but the meat was sooo good I hardly noticed. The potato was extremely good, fresh, and cooked perfectly. Can't say enough about the staff. Prompt, friendly, and courteous come to mind. If you are within 2 hours of WaKeeney Kansas this has got to be a stop. read more

We were driving down the highway and got hungry. Saw this place on yelp and the great reviews and thought to try it. We called ahead and they had our order ready to go. The food was delicious. We ordered different burgers and one person ordered the flat steak. We all loved the food. We declared we will stop here every time we pass through. Next time we want to eat in. The restaurant was very clean, with an inviting ambiance. The lady that took our order on the phone was so nice and made sure we had everything we needed. We highly recommend! read more

Excellent service. Busy place but the staff had everything under control. The chicken fried steak was excellent, no frozen cube steak here, it's the real thing. The rib eye steak was also excellent. Try the tater tots. Don't have anything but good to say about this place. read more

We found this restaurant because they advertised in the KOA newsletter. We appreciated walking there from the campground after a long day driving. Our servers we very friendly. Food came out fast. The flat iron steak with German potatoes was excellent & cooked to order. My hamburger was delicious. Definitely recommend stopping here for dinner. Bonus- very reasonable prices. read more

I live along I-70, but did not know this place existed. Great, hamburgers with style such as those great burger places seen on the Travel Channel. My husband and I had the burger with everything on it (we passed on the jalapeños, but grilled onions and mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, 2 kinds of cheese, mayo and a delicious sweet BBQ sauce to top it off. Oh, and the steak knife stuck in it, holding it all together was picture perfect--oh, almost forgot the thick bacon!! We met on a Monday, halfway to have a visit with our grand baby and momma. Nice clean place and roomy to walk around with the baby. Awesome modern "jukebox" in a side room, and very clean bathroom. I think this is a great restaurant for families, or meeting friends for a beer & burger, or a casual date, even. There were several TV sets and great music playing, but not loud or obnoxious, so you could still visit. It was very ho hum. Sadly the other reviewers must not ever leave Wakeeny. First impression: odd place, looks small and a bit sketchy. Then inside we were pleasantly surprised. Clean and simple. The menu sounded great! But the salads were very disappointing. The lime chicken fiesta salad was iceberg lettuce with a little chicken, tortilla strips, black olives and a drizzle of southwest ranch. It was taco tuesday so my husband had 2 beef tacos. Yes. They were tacos. His chef salad was small and pretty plain. Wish I had taken pics. The best part was the 3 butterfly shrimp that I cpuld have gotten anywhere. They didnt bring us a check, we waited and waited, no drink refills, most of the customers I think were locals so they got a chat in, then finally after asking about the check we were told as if we should have known you go up to the counter to pay the bill you never recieved....ummm ok??! Husband paid cash with a large bill and his change was all large bills. So the tip left was even lower than we would have because he didnt have any ones. Waitressing 101 is that you give small bills so you can get a tip! We were traveling east from Colorado and we want to support small and local so my tip to you is keep on going Hayes is up ahead with more food options! read more

This place doesn't look like much on the outside. But inside is much nicer and definitely remodeled. Service was good. Food was good. There's a few things they could do to improve quality (like offer real mashed potatoes or hand bread the chicken tenders) but being in a small town, it's hard to do everything fresh all the time. read more

This place is a gem. Passing through from Colorado to Indiana. Staff was amazing and friendly while down to earth. Food was GREAT. We got the special with the western potatoes and a side salad. What a terrific find! We're staying at the KOA in WaKeeney - on our way cross-country - and decided to have supper here based on the good reviews. I had the flat iron steak with German fried potatoes and fresh green beans. The steak was delicious, perfectly cooked, and tender as could be. I especially loved the potatoes, cooked in butter with diced onions, just like my mom used to make! My partner had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and white gravy - another winner. Steak was nicely seasoned and absolutely tender, with crisp crust. Real mashed potatoes, and excellent gravy. And, a nice selection of beers to boot. This place is hidden away - you would probably never even see it driving by - but boy is it worth it! read more

Just go in!! We were traveling across the state and needed a quick stop. It looks so unimpressive on the outside, but the food far exceeded my expectations. I had a salad with yummy blue cheese dressing, cheeseburger with everything, it was perfectly charbroiled, a true Kansas beef experience. And I had the smaller burger and it was $4!! Once again, Yelp was a great resource for a quick yummy lunch on our travels. The food was fantastic, service was excellent. My husband and I split the turkey bacon melt, loaded with turkey, bacon and just enough melt. Our waitress asked if we wanted lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and we said why not? It was amazing and I may have to order it with all the veggies from here on. If you want a taste of the heritage of this part of Kansas, don't hesitate to order the German fried potatoes. Delish! We also shared a side of sweet potato fries and they couldn't have been better, dusted lightly with cinnamon sugar.
