People living in Lithuania might be jealous! But such bakeries are rare, even in Chicago nowadays. we live here in California and there is nothing even close to what we remember. But luckily, this little gem of a bakery is making their incredible Lithuanian sourdough rye bread available via Goldbelly. if you are lucky enough to be standing in front of this bakery, run, don't walk inside and buy as many loaves as you have money for. They will freeze well, and they will be the best bread you have ever eaten. If you are not standing in front of it, do what I did. go to their website, and order by Goldbelly. I plan to do it for as long as they remain in business. This bread certainly makes a good sandwich if you slice it thin. But I prefer it toasted, with butter. Or better yet, smeared with Lithuanian farmers cheese that has bits of Caraway. The toast softens the cheese a bit, and you have a gooey treat! If you don't have such cheese (Andrulis is a good brand) consider a good creamy goat or even a simple cow's milk cream cheese spread from good ol' Philadelphia.
