My husband is from the Boston area and has his favorite sub shop in Lynnfield MA. I am from San Francisco and hardly ever order a sub. People from the west coast don't call a sandwich a sub and we hardly EVER have a sandwich unless it's on a sour dough roll. We ordered two subs from The Bread Box and both were amazing. Love the crew there always a good attitude and positive environment when I eat in. I have eaten at the bread box for 6 months now i get there boneless bites and fries four out of seven days a week, it's not on the menu but if you request extra hot it's to die for, just make sure it's dipped after you break down your delicious chucky blue cheese!. I haven't had the food here. I tend to order take=away when it's late and I'm not cooking. My last "visit" it was 20 minutes before closing. Average pizza, got a buffalo chicken specialty pizza and it was ok. The chicken wasn't spicy at all though, it was just plain chicken. I noticed this when I got a "buffalo chicken" calzone before. It took over an hour to get our food delivered on a monday night and our pizza was cold when it arrived so that was pretty irritating. read more

We have had some ok subs from this place before, however, a recent purchase was really pathetic. I had a roll-up that was advertised as containing guacamole, and my wife had a roll-up said to contain humus. In both instances, it looked like the above was put on with a paint brush. I will never order from here again! Quite possibly the WORST customer experience/service I have ever had. A group of us ordered $100.00 worth of food...here's the experience: 1) delivery driver didn't deliver two pizzas - when we only ordered two (pizzas) 2) ordered boneless bites, they came with buffalo sauce on them when there was no mention of sauce. 3) ordered a buffalo chicken wrap - came with NO buffalo sauce 4) barely any chicken on the chicken wraps After all of that, I called to speak with a manager and I got KIM. Kim claimed to be a manager, but her inability to diffuse the situation leads me to believe she isn't one at all. While trying to explain all of the issues, she said, "I'm sorry can I put you on hold for one moment so I can get other orders out?" I obliged but then was hung up on (possibly accidentally) after three minutes. I called back and was immediately put on hold. I got hung up on again. I called back a third time and Kim answered. I told her that I shouldn't have to call back three times, or be hung up on, when I'm trying to explain our experience/frustration. She hung up on me a third time. I can't wrap my head around how OUR order is any less important than the rest of the orders. I also can't understand why a manager isn't more sympathetic to the complaint. I wasn't looking for, or asking for anything free - we ate the food; but it's the principal. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND CALLING ANY OTHER RESTAURANT IN PORTSMOUTH BEFORE THIS ONE!!! read more

Pretty average pizza joint. The Mediterranean was good with spinach, tomatoes, but could have used a lot more feta cheese. They use red sauce and i prefer this style pizza with just the olive oil. The crust was a little burned as well. The onion rings and French fries were classic deeply fried and greasy, but yummy if that's what you're going for. It's small inside, but movable tables with classic red and white checkered table cloths. Good prices, and private parking which can be hard to find nearby in downtown. read more

I have only had the pizza. And all I can say is it is NOT good!! The sauce is so thick, it looks, feels,and taste like straight up tomatoe past with a ton of oregano. ( don't get me wrong I like oregano but this is WAY to much.) The crust is no good as well. Undercooked and no flavor, maybe this is why the over abundant use of oregano. Today, I had ordered two subs (an italian and a chicken club) and a french fry for a co-worker and I to be delivered to our work. After an hour of waiting, I had called to check on the status of our order and was told that the driver should be there any minute. I know Bread Box get's busy during lunch time so I wasn't too upset it had been an hour. It wasn't until 30 min after that did the driver show up. Not only did it take an hour and a half to deliver two subs and a fry, but the fries container was half full and they were cold and my sub wasn't made correctly. I immediately called about it, letting them know that I am NOT one to complain, especially having been in the industry. The woman I spoke with, while very monotone, was not unpleasant or rude. She let me know they would immediately send out a new sub, which is appreciated but there was not once an apology. The second sub they sent out took 50 min to get to me but at least this time is was made correctly and the fries were warm. read more

I'd say they are better than your average pizza place. The pizza itself isn't great but they have a ton of options and a lot of their stuff is good. Great roll ups and salads, pretty decent wings and calzones, good sandwiches, etc. service is usually good although lately they have been taking a looooong time on delivery. Ordered 3 salads for my wife and two other teachers. Ordered at 11 for delivery nearby. Over an hour later, they still had not arrived. Called and was told verbatim: "they should have been there so they should be there any minute". I paid around 30ish for food and put a tip on the card for the driver (5 bucks), generous since it's maybe 1 mile away. I actually liked this place when they cared about what they were preparing for their customers! I just ordered lunch and they had no chicken salad. I settled for the egg salad on a bulky roll. Rolls used to be fresh, firm and bakery made. now they are the cheap soft store bought version. They also used to make their own potato chips which were fabulous! Now they open a bag of store bought chips and slap them on the dish. Used to have great garlic spear pickles not anymore only the cheap store bought dill slices. YUK! I will make my own sandwich at home from now on and will make it a lot better they they could! The moral is, don't try saving money by going cheap. You will lose a lot of customers read more

I would NEVER eat here again. Not only was the place dirty inside, they served me raw chicken. The boneless wings weren't just a little undercooked.....all pieces were completely RAW inside. It wasn't even close. Both my girlfirend and I had bitten into raw pieces of chicken. I then drove all the way back and asked for a refund for my order. (small pizza and wings). I asked for the full refund based on the fact i had to now drive back and was totally disgusted. Dan the kitchen manager did not seem to think it was a big deal and stated "sorry man, the complaint was just for the wings, not the pizza" He didn't even offer to make me new wings. When i asked for the owners information he said he was "unable to give that out" which is a huge red flag. Any owner of an established restaurant should be available to customers even if its just an email address. Dan basically laughed off the complaint and handed me $6 and change and said have a nice day. I attempted to explain to him the severity of serving raw chicken and how much worse things could have gotten had we become sick. Again, he shrugged it off and sent me on my way. if Dan would have taken my complaint even remotely serious, i would not have written this review. Being in the restaurant business myself, i understand things happen and mistakes are made. It's all about how you address the mistakes not the mistakes themselves that sets apart the good from the bad. The $7 he tried to save the owner by not refunding the pizza as well will cost the breadbox hundreds of $$ in lost business. On a side note, some of my friends have noticed a sharp decline in their food/decor as well over the past year. I would not be surprised if drugs/alcohol were involved given his and the other staff members appearances and stench. My guess is they will be shut down by years end. Do yourself a favor and cut into their chicken if you are even brave enough to eat there again. read more

Not impressed in the slightest. Ordered delivery for the office (6 people). Called right when they opened and asked for delivery to be within the hour. That was 10:30 am for an 11:30 lunch. I went on lunch with no food, and with 7 minutes left on my lunch (now nearly 2 HOURS later) I got my delivery COLD! As a matter of fact, we even got a pizza that was cold... but burnt on the bottom. When we said how unhappy we were about the delivery time with the driver...his response was.... oh, sorry, we had other deliveries before yours. Not sure how they got theirs or when they could have ordered Hours before us, but, I hope theirs didn't end up in the trash where 90 % of ours did. Will never do business there again. Better than ever! I went there many years ago and vowed I would never return. However at the suggestion of a friend, I was informed that several years ago the place was sold to a new owner and decided to give it a try. To put it mildly, there has been a vast improvement. The pizza is now the best in Portsmouth, and the subs are both fresh, tasty, and a great value. I would highly recommend this place.
