A friend recommended this spot when I visited Portsmouth ... knowing full well that I love dive bars and vintage places. I would say this qualifies as both. The pizzas are a lot more expensive than I thought an individual-sized bar pie would be ... and the pizza was honestly nothing I couldn't make at home in a toaster. However, the 70's atmosphere didn't dissapoint. The best part about this place ... other than the fantastic waitress ... was the ice cold beer. It comes in a frosted mug and is some of the coldest beer I've had on draft. The prices weren't terrible at about $5 - $7 per glass, although the glasses seemed a little small. 12 ounce maybe. The best of the pizzas we ordered was the roasted garlic pie. The garlic was sweet but also had the typical garlic taste. Hamds down, I woukd order this again. The hamburger pizza was the worst of the bunch with dry, tasteless burger crumbles on it. I was surprised to see so many good reviews about it. Everything else was just okay. Next time, I'll try one of their more intrtesting pies like the bratwurst one. A one-topping pizza was $15 - $16 and was about the size of a frozen Cape Cod pizza from the supermarket. About the size of a dinner plate and enough for one person ... probably not to share. I heard interesting things about the wings bit I am not a fan of 'heat challenges', so we skipped those after hearing another customer say they could barely finish one due to the pepper. Overall, if you want to feel like you are in the late 70's/early 80's, this is the no frills vibe you'll get. Except in the 1970's the cost of one pizza today could buy dinner for an entire sports team back then. This place gets my recommendation, especislly if you like a thinner/crisper crust and well-done cheese/toppings. Places that have been around since Gerald Ford was President are a rare thing these days, especially off the highway in a town like Portsmouth. read more

We've been coming here for years, and it's always extremely consistent. Bar style little pizzas. Frozen glasses for beer so cold that ice will form in your beer- so cold and so good! The service was great considering it was a packed Friday night. The food was excellent I had their classic Buffalo wings and their "Bavarian Pizza" bratwurst and onions. So unique , but oh so good! Food was pretty good as was service. My only problem with the establishment is they don't specify everything that is in certain meals. My fiancé ordered fettuccine Alfredo expecting broccoli chicken and Alfredo. Instead she was met with mixed veggies(peppers, snap peas, mushrooms,) and broccoli had to be ordered on the side for extra cost. Got 2 pizzas and split them. One Aegean and the other Kappy's. The sausage on the Aegean was sweet and the tomato on the Kappy was fresh. Good pizza but very pricey for the size. Service was very nice. Inside was very spacious and plenty of parking. read more

We had only been in Portsmouth for an hour or so when my wife and I independently decided that pizza would be a good choice for dinner. We wanted something very local versus a pizza chain. This place fit the bill perfectly for that. Plus the reviews were good. So off we went in search of this place. A quick 7-8 minute drive from our hotel found the restaurant. We went in, we knew we had made the right choice. To say this place felt local was an understatement. Grandparents with their grandkids. Parents with their kids. People like us. Our server was an older gentleman who really knew his stuff. We had a few questions, which he answered perfectly. He told us that basically this was a Greek pizza place. And he was right. The place was not fancy, but was definitely clean and welcoming. The Pizza was really good! The beer was cold. All in all, we really enjoyed our visit here. read more

This place has my favorite pizza in the world. I always have to come here at least once every visit. In fact, I went there twice on this visit. I had a meatball and pepperoni pizza the first night (pictured) and a hamburg pizza (not pictured) the next night. The service is always good and the food gets out to you pretty quick even when packed. It's usually busy because it's got a good bar area and the booths are great for families. I love it so much. My dad took me here a lot as a kid, so I went back a few weeks ago with my husband. It was so good. Affordable, friendly sweet service, red soda cups and a million refills and a nice Greek salad. Brought back endless memories. Really enjoyed it! My husband mentioned he's driven by this restaurant many times over the years but hadn't ever tried it. This time, it was a perfect meeting place for us and our daughter wanted pizza. The pizza is personal size (or shareable if you're getting an app or sharing another entree) and was good! We tried 3 different ones and enjoyed them all. I had the stuffed pepper lunch special and it was ok, but I probably wouldn't get it again (I prefer my pepper to be less mushy). The service was good. We went on a Friday and it was busy, mostly elderly folks but they were nice and loved the kids. There is a lot of parking. We'd go back for the pizza if we're in the area! read more

We come to this area once or twice a year and the Bratskellar is always on our list of places to revisit. I can really only speak to the personal pizzas as that is what we always get. They are very good! There is also almost always a great selection of beers, including some special ones in rotation. I always get the Hawaiian Poker pizza, my wife always gets mushroom and onion and plain pizzas for my boys. We've been going for years and maybe only once had a subpar pizza. Great interior. I love the fact that this restaurant is iconic with a long history serving the seacoast. I love that the waitstaff is as iconic as the restaurant. I love the old world slightly tacky decor and how it adds to the charm. I love that so many people with long histories still swear-by and love the food. BUT FOR ME THE MEAL WAS TERRIBLE. Sorry folks! The greek salad was average but I must admit the feta was good. The infamous pizza is made with a flimsy cracker crust. The pizza toppings, while slightly interesting (chicken livers) tasted cheap and poorly prepared. Sure, they load the pizzas with whatever toppings you choose but they mostly serve to completely demolish the weak crust. The wings which receive a lot of word of mouth local accolades for being extra hot (spicy) are served with soft skins, and I specifically asked for them to be crispy. Haven't been in several years, but met a friend for lunch. We didn't bother much with the menu, focusing on beer, and my friend ordered a pizza that we split. Beer selection was decent, and I was able to be forced into a choice. That choice was the 603 coffee porter, which was very good... all three times. The liquor menu leaves a bit to be desired (no Basil Hayned, no Bullitt Rye), but service was effective and professional. They were busy and the delivery of the order reflected that. Still, we never "waited" more than a slight delay. Our food was a hamburg and mushroom, done crisp (by order). It was not done crisp. It wasn't undercooked, it was just a normally cooked pizza. Flavor was fine, if not superlative. It was necessary to add parmesan. I minded none of this, as my friend treated, but if I were returning, there is better pizza around. read more

Classic place to go for a good old fashioned meal. The decor seems original for it's time and I love it. Nothing fancy - it's about the atmosphere and taking you back to the days when things were much more simple. Everyone who works there is so nice. We keep going back every week. The service at Bratskellar was great!!! The waitress came over and we placed our order right away, 2 Caesar salads with grilled chicken. The 2 salads came out within 10 minutes. If you like strong anchovy Caesar dressing, this salad is for you. Anchovy's weren't our thing... so we also ordered chicken Parmesan sub, and a BLT with melted cheese and it came within minutes. Bethany was very kind and sweet, service was fantastic. I'd come back again to have some drinks and try the pizzas! Everybody in there was a local, and everyone was super friendly. If you're confused, it's behind the fancy seafood restaurant. The draft selection was good. Most beers come in 12 oz. mugs. The pizza was the thing to get. I got the pepperoni and sausage, and my wife got the Aegean, and both were amazing. The sauce was delicious (NOT sweet) and the crust was perfect (not too thick, not too thin, just right). If I lived near this place, I would gain 30 pounds, because I would eat here all the time. read more

I've been driving past the Bratskellar and Dinnerhorn for maybe 20 years and I've always thought that the signs screamed "Tourist Trap". After laughing at the place for years, I just noticed that it was rated highly on Yelp and rated highly by local people. I had to check it out. We went to Bratskellar. It's apparently owned by the same people that own the Dinnerhorn and they share a credit card machine, but they're decorated differently and have separate entrances with the Brat's entrance around back. The Brat is a pizza and beer place. It's decorated in a 60's or 70's style with dark wood everywhere and booths. There are more than a few customers with white hair, but young people seemed to be doing well too. And many of the people knew each other. I was totally wrong about this place, it's a hangout full of locals. The pizza was okay. Not the best you'll find in Portsmouth, but not the worst. Service was friendly, smiling, and efficient (we had Becca). Everything seemed to be clean. It was loud and happy inside, with plenty of laughing. Parking was tight on a beautiful Saturday at about 7PM. I can see us going back to the Brat. Not because the pizza is amazing, but because the pizza is good and the atmosphere was fun. And we'll hope that Becca is our server. read more

Although we believe they've changed their pizza dough / crust--- not for the better , we still adore the old fashioned/ throwback interior, the wings, the oysters + mostly the pizza. I have a peanut allergy. When we asked the waitress if this is something Bratskellar could accommodate, it took three trips to the back of the kitchen and an attitude on the waitress not fit for a restaurant to find the appropriate answers to our questions. Perhaps they need better training for their waitstaff. Never have I experienced a server throwing their hands up and huffing back at me when I asked "do you know if there are practices to prevent cross-contamination in the kitchen?" It is actually NOT my intention to make anyone's life any more difficult- these are pretty typical questions one will encounter if dealing with someone with food allergies. While it was a bummer we could not eat the food, the waitress' attitude was by far the more appalling part of this experience. (They use peanut oil in their dough. The gluten free dough does not have peanut oil, but they can't prevent cross contamination because it's prepared on the same surface and they can't guarantee it is properly cleaned.) read more
