The refurbished 'bar area' now has more comfortable seating. Service is friendly and attentive. Food on the new menu is delicious!

Lots of gluten free options. Generous portions. A nice selection on the menu of starts, salads, pizza and entrees. We look forward to coming back. Service was prompt and friendly. It was relaxing and we could carry on a conversation!

Beautiful interior with outdoor seating too. Unfortunately the cocktails were one note, extremely overpriced, and the food menu was completely underwhelming. Better Italian elsewhere.

Good experience - very friendly service, the bread & oil to start was delish! We got the chicken parm and carbonara and really enjoyed both! Would come back

Chicken and sausage cacciatore - tasty but an unusually sweet sauce

I came here with a large group of friends for a birthday dinner on a Saturday night. Overall, everyone was generally satisfied with the experience, and we had excellent service. Later that evening, when speaking to someone who lived locally, I was told that the restaurant use to be a "more traditional" Italian restaurant, but the current owners of the restaurant are trying to "kick it up a notch." I saw some evidence of that, I feel they can do some more. Our table ordered wine with dinner. The specials, including featured wines, come on a smaller page given with the regular menu. All of the featured wines were more expensive, but they also have a nice variety of wines generally at lower prices on the regular menu and we enjoyed the one we ordered. What I found interesting is that someone else at our table ordered an single pour of the same wine, and we all noticed what a generous pour it was, clearly something of note when ordering wine here. I suspect the bread baskets (nice, dense, flavorful bread) are made in advance, because our first basket did not have enough for everyone at our table, but more bread was available on request. It is accompanied by a small ramekin of olive oil, but if you order house salads, you get decanters of oil and balsamic vinegar which can also be used for the bread. Dinners came out reasonably close together, typically all of one entree delivered at a time. My chicken and sausage cacciatore, while tasty, was not what I expected. Typically, a cacciatore is served either with a side of pasta, or on pasta, but this was mixed in with the pasta (which was a bit chewy). Also the sauce was unusually sweet, which led me to believe this was a somewhat generic sauce used for several entrees. Several people at my table ordered the short rib on polenta, and I was able to sample some. I thought the polenta was delicious, but I felt the short rib, while tender, lacked flavor. For me, The Rosa is one of those restaurants that I feel I will enjoy more after visiting a few times and finding just what items on the menu will appeal to me the most. I'd certainly return.

My second review in a few days! Went to The Rosa again on my stay in Portsmouth and I always sit at the bar. Today I got the Caprese Salad for a starter and it was delicious. Chicken Marsala which was amazing and came with a side Caesar Salad YUM! I want to note that I tried one of their speciality drinks called the Lime Rickey. This was one of my favorite drinks so far, it was a great summer drink. Highly recommend. I had the pleasure of being served by 3 different bartenders, Jess, Matthew and Ally. I cannot say enough about this staff. They are professional, attentive and always great conversation. The Rosa is highly recommended. Great laid back atmosphere and beautiful decor.

    Pan seared salmon with risotto

After hearing great things about this place, we decided to try it. We walked in on a weekend evening at dinner time and there was no wait. We were immediately greeted by our super outgoing and kind server (I cannot remember his name). He seemed very knowledgeable about the menu and dietary needs. We instantly got our drinks and placed our entree orders. I got the pan seared salmon; well done. It was the perfect portion of creamy risotto which is usually on the heavier side, but I didn't finish feeling like I ate too much. Salmon was crispy on top, just how I like it. Paired well with the risotto (didn't care for the salsa so I got that on the side). All of the staff was friendly and welcoming. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area!

Great ambience with exceptional staff. We were treated with a smile and continued professional service. Food was delicious! The house made bread came out warm with olive oil for dipping....yum. Salad came with our dinner and pasta was fabulous. Excellent wine and cocktail list. We will definitely be back again soon!

Not sure why the lower score... But my team mates and I had a great dinner after work. Everyone was happy with what they ordered from pizza and calzone to chicken and broccoli and veal parmesan with housemade fresh pasta. Friendly service and prices were decent.

We stopped at Rosa with some family that lives in the area on a Thursday night. The service was good and the restaurant is beautiful. My aunt told us about the history of the restaurant before and during her 30 years in Portsmouth. The food was pretty average for Italian restaurants. It's filling with big servings.

They did not acknowledge my wife's birthday, though it was noted in the reservation. Here's the food: Arancini - good flavor, odd shape and breading, didn't come with sauce Calamari - slightly overcooked, not that tough but wasn't soft like fresh should be, but it was crispy Caesar salad - very good Side salmon - star of the show, delicious Kids butter pasta - it was fine, the pasta was a little over cooked Flank steak - cooked perfect. I'm not convinced it was flank steak just be the texture, it was leaner than expected but delicious - closer to strip steak. The cold potato salad is an odd choice. Carbonara Pizza - it's not carbonara, it's a breakfast pizza. MAYBE they used guanciale, but it was sliced thin like bacon with a few whole strips, not chunks like you'd expect carbonara. Also had chunks of mozz on it and a poached egg or too. I personally would have made a carbonara sauce as the base and then chunked guanciale on top. A little pepper and parsley to pull it together. Honestly disappointed, carbonara is a top dish for me. Dessert menu is lacking big time. The complementary soft serve gelato was good, not great. The place is fine, I wouldn't go back.

The outdoor seating looks gorgeous, and the indoor seating looks cozy, so I thought the food could be promising. We ordered the Mushroom Pizza and the Fig Pizza. The Mushroom Pizza was decent, but honestly not as flavorful as it looked. Just based on the mushroom pizza, I would probably give Napoletana 3 or 4 stars. However, I did not like the Fig Pizza at all. I am a sucked for unique pizza flavors, and love a dash of something sweet (Hawaiian Pizza or a Hot Honey pizza are my favorites!). This Fig Pizza was SO SWEET. There was so much jam on it that it was sweeter than candy! My brother-in-law and mother-in-law could not eat it. I think this would have been much better with fresh figs, or just a dash of jam here and there. We barely touched the fig pizza as I seemed to be the only one who could get through it. As for the service, we got takeout, so I can't speak much to that. But our pizza was ready on time and everyone seemed polite upon pickup.

A friend recommended this spot when I visited Portsmouth ... knowing full well that I love dive…read morebars and vintage places. I would say this qualifies as both. The pizzas are a lot more expensive than I thought an individual-sized bar pie would be ... and the pizza was honestly nothing I couldn't make at home in a toaster. However, the 70's atmosphere didn't dissapoint. The best part about this place ... other than the fantastic waitress ... was the ice cold beer. It comes in a frosted mug and is some of the coldest beer I've had on draft. The prices weren't terrible at about $5 - $7 per glass, although the glasses seemed a little small. 12 ounce maybe. The best of the pizzas we ordered was the roasted garlic pie. The garlic was sweet but also had the typical garlic taste. Hamds down, I woukd order this again. The hamburger pizza was the worst of the bunch with dry, tasteless burger crumbles on it. I was surprised to see so many good reviews about it. Everything else was just okay. Next time, I'll try one of their more intrtesting pies like the bratwurst one. A one-topping pizza was $15 - $16 and was about the size of a frozen Cape Cod pizza from the supermarket. About the size of a dinner plate and enough for one person ... probably not to share. I heard interesting things about the wings bit I am not a fan of 'heat challenges', so we skipped those after hearing another customer say they could barely finish one due to the pepper. Overall, if you want to feel like you are in the late 70's/early 80's, this is the no frills vibe you'll get. Except in the 1970's the cost of one pizza today could buy dinner for an entire sports team back then. This place gets my recommendation, especislly if you like a thinner/crisper crust and well-done cheese/toppings. Places that have been around since Gerald Ford was President are a rare thing these days, especially off the highway in a town like Portsmouth.

I ordered online and it said to pick up at 7:10, about 30 minutes. I showed up at 7:08 and there was no host. I only counted 4 patrons, a couple, a guy at the bar, and someone sitting outside. After a minute or so I walked around the host stand and stare into the kitchen. Someone finally noticed me and came out. My pizza was under the host stand so I got it and headed out. Probably about 5 minutes in the restaurant. We got it home and dug in. First we were disappointed in the size. As stated it was about 13" maybe. It was cut into 6 slices and my wife and I finished it. We usually get a large and have half a pizza left over. That would have been fine except that it cost $21. Better value would have been at $12. Given that they are fancy, maybe $15. However the flavor and texture weren't awesome. The flavor wasn't bad, just not great. For a place called "Dough", you would think the crust would be on point, but it wasn't. I don't know how long it sat under the host station but maybe the crust got soggy? It wasn't remotely crispy or crunchy. It wasn't wet it gross, it just wasn't good. We probably won't be back for a few more years again.
