The food was okay when I went for a German buffet on a Friday evening but the bread pudding was delicious. The inside had a old-school feel to in the inside which is a departure from the modern interiors I see these days. However, the staff was friendly and caring. We went for the German buffet. You pay the cashier first & then you go through the self serve buffet. It has bread, a small salad bar, 2 kinds of soup, and a small selection of Mennonite food such as vereniki with ham gravy, hot German potato salad, and sausage with sweet sauerkraut. They have a dessert bar with cookies, German chocolate cake, bread pudding and a few others. Overall it was okay. My faves were the green bean soup, the ham, the bread pudding. Local friends touted it as the place to go for German carbs and boy was it! Friday and Saturday nights they have a buffet so that was how I got to know it. There is a good salad bar and they had four or five types of bread to start it. You can buy loaves too -- they bake on site and have lots of baked goods for sell. The food buffet included a German version of pirogies or something I think called vierna or something close. My friends put ham gravy over them and while it's not beautiful, it was tasty and filling. There were also German sausages I enjoyed and sliced ham. Sauerkraut, hot potato salad and more. They have a selection of desserts included with the buffet. Pieces of cake, something called cherry moos which I had with ice cream. But I would be remiss if I didn't mention the big dessert case with things like strawberry rhubarb pie that looked amazing! read more

They were favorable but tuff & chewy. The buns were good. The fries were good. The peanut butter pie left a lot to be desired. Went here for lunch with my mom and brother and really liked it. I ordered a Rueben that was made with lean pastrami, sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese on rye. It was delicious! It also came with four cups for soup choices. My favorite was the chicken borscht. The place is kind of a hole in the wall, but the food was hot, fresh, and good. The absolute best thing was their bread!!!! It was so good, we bought a loaf of the vegetable bread and a jar of Peach Jelly to take home. If I lived in the area, I'd weigh 300 pounds! The food is Mennonite German, they type I'm used to growing up. Sausage, zwieback, potatoes, verenikas, etc. - all was tasty! My only complaint is that the older community plagues the place with snarled looks and judgment if you aren't white and have tattoos or piercings. Growing up in a German Mennonite home in Newton, KS, I was raised on bierocks, verenika, zwieback, Peabody sausage, ham gravy, and hot potato salad. The Breadbasket's Friday and Saturday buffet features this type of "German" food, not the kind of German food outsiders would expect. This place is more true to the types of food known in this region than anywhere else. It won't be easily appreciated by outsiders, but for us locals raised on this "cuisine", it's heaven. I highly recommend it to those customers who appreciate exploring authentic cultural fare of different regions of the United States with an open mind and willingness not to compare it with what they get at an Applebees. Young lady behind register was just standing there while a lady who was there with a bag of rolls patiently waited for acknowledgement and service. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. The clam chowder was bland and tasteless. I have had better from a can. Set that aside to taste their specialty the bierock. Bland and tasteless also. I'm not German nor have I ever eaten German food so I didn't know what to expect. Basically, it's a wheat roll filled with Cabbage, sausage and many onions. It was luke warm. The flavors could have been better if it were fresh out the oven but considering...it was okay. I would try again at another restaurant that wouldn't make me feel out of place next time. I for one found this place perfect for a full on Teutonic carb-fest. The bierocks here are spot on, and the German Potato Salad is well made and very well seasoned. My veggies were not overcooked (something I'd expect every time in a German restaurant), and the service was less than gushingly friendly but solid and efficient. (I don't go out to eat to make friends with the staff, hon. I'm there to NOSH OUT.) The hubby loved his soup. (He's an inveterate soup eater from WAY back.) He even went so far as to get some soup to go. (Do you have any idea how difficult it is to transport soup from Kansas to central Oklahoma? Thank Thor we had our Yeti in the back of the van.) We avoided desserts on our visit, as we'd already carbed the f*ck out to begin with. (Everything in moderation, sugar. Including moderation.) I keep hearing about the vareniki here, and really want to try them. (The owners were out the day we went in, and we didn't have time to wait for them to make more. Still, though, we may return to Kansas later this year, and -- if we do -- we'll stop in for some of those central European little buggers.) I'm grateful this restaurant has decided to do what it takes to remain open in this tricky COVID-19 situation. Newton seems to have embraced this unique restaurant and they've responded by providing an eclectic buffet, supplemented with some German Mennonite menu choices at other times. Thankfully they continued to offer fresh-baked bread and a few other specialties which seem to be well received. We arrived on a Saturday morning and quickly took advantage of their delightful breakfast buffet. Bacon, sausages, ham, fresh made biscuits with a marvelous sausage gravy, etc. Their breakfast casserole was superb and in high demand (if you go, you must try it but be prepared - you might have to wait a little!).
