Highly recommend this place! Was looking for a place to get some laser cutting done, and used Yelp to find a place. Am so glad to have chosen The Build Shop. The price to use the equipment is unbeatable, and the people are so friendly and helpful it made the entire process go very smoothly. I love this place! I've only used them for assisted laser cutting, but both of my experiences have been fantastic. I'll definitely be using their other services in the future. It's super convenient and easy to book and pay for laser cutting time through their website. Their location is easy to get to, only about 15 minutes from USC. There is ample street parking -- once you arrive at their building, enter their unit # into the intercom to get buzzed in. Maya was extremely helpful and friendly. I enjoyed chatting with her while my job was going. The assisted laser cutting service is very affordable, and it's worth it to have Maya adjust the settings correctly for the material you're cutting. It's less stressful than having to go the DIY route at school or sending off your cutting files to a company and hoping they turn out correctly. Keep in mind that laser cutters #1 & #2 have different sized beds (18"x32" vs. 18"x24")! They notify you on their website and in your confirmation email, but it's easy to overlook or forget. I haven't had much luck calling in to ask questions, as my calls usually go to voicemail. However, after showing up for my appointment, Maya answered each of my thousand questions with patience and put me at ease. Coming here feels like consulting a friend who is extremely knowledgeable in all sorts of fabrication methods, and I would recommend them to anyone. read more

After being bumped from our schools 3D printer I had to find an alternative solution for printing a large model. Bryan and the build shop were available to help me out. Not only was I able to print my entire project with him but he helped ensure proper printing, delivery time (we were on a tight timeline) and was vastly less inexpensive than others in the area. Great service, expert advice, affordable pricing, cool location. I booked some laser cutter time and even though it was last-minute on a Saturday, the whole process was a breeze. Maya and Bryan are super response and friendly, and they made me feel right at home. Maya is an expert on the laser cutter, and bent over backwards to help me - she allowed me to work longer than I'd expected, and even helped me tweak my design. This is a family-run operation (in a very photogenic live/work community at a renovated factory building), and it's clear the owners take pride in their work and love what they do. Back when I was in college studying Industrial design, I had the luxury of having unlimited access to a laser cutter. Every now and then I get the urge to cut something when I get an idea. A friend of mine recommended the place and I also found them on Yelp. The Build Shop is not your typical business. It's more of a personal experience since it's a live work loft space and owned by a young couple. Maya and Bryan were very nice to work with and offered to go the extra mile when there was a hiccup with some flames from a slow cut. They expedited my project and I was able to have it finished the same day. The rates are "as good as it gets" They also teach courses and offer several prototyping machines like a mini ZCORP powder printer and a CNC mill. read more

A group of us (totaling 11) booked a private introduction to 3-D printing class at The Build Shop. The class was supposed to last 2 hours, which would include a hands on experience and a 3-D printout for each participant to take home. The total cost $25 - $20 per person plus an additional $5 material fee for the take home printouts. Maya, co-owner of the shop, spoke about 3-D printing while we stood around her. Odd setup and we learned very little. Maya answered the phone a couple of times during the class and another interruption included other guests who stopped by to drop something off. After only one hour, Maya announced that class was over. Not only was class supposed to last another hour BUT we hadn't experienced anything hands on. No takeaway 3-D printing. When we pointed these things out to Maya, she simply said that she couldn't do the full 2 hours because she had a new client project arrive the night before. She offered us a 33% refund, but that didn't seem fair considering that she only conducted 1/2 of a class AND we still paid the materials fee. Right away it was clear that we had taken a back seat to this new client project. She even told us herself that the client was more valuable to her than our class. And worse, she never even considered giving us a heads up beforehand that she would be cutting the class short. Had we not said anything right after Maya ended class after only 1 hour, she would never have offered even a partial refund. Highly unethical. All 11 of us walked away feeling like we had been scammed. After we left, Maya called and then gave us a further discount of %17. Again, this means we essentially still paid a materials fee for materials we never received. Shifty and shady business practices. read more

Discovering this amazing place allowed me to take my costume designs to an entirely new level! I hesitate to give away my secrets, and I would certainly love to keep these guys all to myself, but Maya and Brian deserve all the love in LA for creating such an awesome, inviting, creative space for artists and 'makers' to learn new tools and really push the limits of technology + imagination. Had a little email communication issue that was not their fault. Iin the end I took their intro to 3D printing class and was greatly impressed. They know their stuff. I'm looking to do more work with them in the future and highly recommend them. They have a deep understanding of the various methods for 3D printing (as well as other valuable skills) and have several different printers. They are also great teachers. They have a nice space with lots of examples of projects they've done. I found the space to be very comfortable in that here is a place the creative process will be able to fully unfold. One thing I like about the staff at The Build Shop is they are problem solvers who are willing to keep coming up with options until you find one that meets your needs. read more

I did a large piece of 3D printing here for my architecture model, I was very happy how it turned out. The owners were professional with expertise, they now what they are doing. They were very patient while we were trying to fix problems on computer before the actual printing stage to make sure things will go smoothly. The money I spent to make an appointment was refunded and they scheduled a 1 hour meeting a couple of days later free of charge. When I met them in person I could immediately see it was a very small business being run by two very nice people, they answered all the questions that I had and more. This place is fucking awful. They messed up my line weights. Printed the same file twice and wasted my material. Made each sheet take 30 mins and charged me $50, saying that it was 50% off. The lady there was giving me attitude and we very inattentive. Never again! Don't waste your money! Reply to Shop's Comment: I believe you are mistaken! I came in-person to cut (no-rush order, no next day delivery) , and the lady left me unattended 90% of the time. I have always loved personalized and homemade gifts and found "The Build Shop" to be a great place to create such gifts. In my case, I wanted to make a few pairs of earrings, which I did using the laser cutter machine and basswood. The reason for the 5 star rating is customer service. I came in with an idea, and Maya and Bryan helped me turn the idea into the desired gift item, without compromise. Most importantly, I enjoyed the process, and met my time deadline. I love The Build Shop. I've looked at several makerspaces around LA, and nothing else is really even an option for me. Some of the others I looked at required a membership or a minimum appointment length, or charged fees two or three times higher per hour, and were often prohibitively far away. The Build Shop is cheap (cost-wise), 30 minutes from me, and open late enough for me to stop by after work. Also they're really friendly, which is a plus. Basically, The Build Shop is like having a cool neighbor with all the tools you need who is patient and helpful and willing to teach you how to do things. Having access to and familiarity with laser cutting/etching and 3D printing allows me to not only make craft projects that I previously couldn't have, I'm able to envision project that I previously wouldn't have been able to think of. read more

I have been prototyping and fabricating board game components with Bryan and Maya for a few years and they have always been incredibly helpful. The rates for laser cutting are the best in town and if you go through the safety courses on the machines it gets even better! While they try to accommodate walk ins as best as they can, it is always best to make an appointment. I've found the more notice I give, the easier it is for me to get in, get things done, and get back out with minimal effort. I always learn a bit more every time I run a job and have become incredibly effective with their cutter thanks to their patience and willingness to help. read more

I've used The Build Shop for contract laser cutting in the past and they've had fast turnarounds and reasonable prices. But the last job, I realized later there was a mistake and the wrong number of parts got cut. Some places will give you a hassle when there's a mistake and give you the runaround, but not here. Bryan's build shop is definitely one of the best "hackerspaces" that ive been to. Im an architecture student and i go to the build shop at least 3 times a week to either laser cut or 3d print. Bryan, the owner, is always a great help, and prices are good too. I recommend this place for any architecture student! The setup is also fantastic, in the lobby space he has a gallery where he showcases photographer's work, as well as work of his own. my favorite part is the fact that the build shop hosts workshop classes almost every week, these classes could range from learning to dance, to learning how to pick a lock. very creative atmosphere. great place!..going there today read more

This place is a godsend. I design acrylic jewelry for a living and took a laser cutting class with Bryan when I was barely starting out. It was very informative and useful and I immediately loved the laid back and cozy vibe of the place. I went back dozens of times after to cut my pieces there, and Maya always helped me every step up the way, sometimes even giving me some yummy baked treats while I waited for my vectoring to finish. Now I have my own laser machine, but still rely on them for larger orders as their machine has a larger capacity and cuts much smoother than mine. I can't recommend them enough. For my first experience they where is a rush and the attendant helped me get started fast. then after my hour the part had a problem and did not cut all the way threw!
