The wallpaper in my suite was coming loose, pink grime and dust on the bathroom grout and corners, unpleasant odor from the toilet plumbing, and unappealing breakfast! The TV remote and channels were from decades past. The lukewarm scrambled egg made from powder, heated frozen sausage patties and potatoes not quite warm enough, and some unappealing muffins and doughnut-looking baked goods...I didn't stop to inspect further. Old is okay but unclean is not. Simple food is okay but poor quality food at improper temperature is not. A single fresh fruit is better than a mush blend of dissolving fruit. I thought I was treating myself by booking here.... Can you go buy some real food for tomorrow's breakfast? Please? Pros: Friendly staff, quick service, nice desk and lamps, comfortable furniture and plenty of space in the suite.

It's new, and it's the only B&B in Berea, with the quaint downtown square right around the corner. The owners are quick to respond to any problems, the location is fantastic, the beds are good. Even the *towels* here are top-notch. When I checked to make sure I didn't have down pillows, I found brand new allergy shield pillow covers on high-quality synthetic pillows. When you stay in a B&B in an old Victorian or heritage home, usually that means dealing with a tiny bathroom, undersized shower, and so on; the beautiful old home that houses Riverside Gables was completely renovated in fall 2012, with nice big showers, new fixtures, and new floors. Guests even have a sitting room, with a kitchenette and fridge, Keurig coffee machine, spare dishes, and (my favorite) electric kettle and teapots for tea. Glass bottles of water are kept chilled for the use of the guests, and it was great to have that bottle of water to take to my room (and also not feel like I was wasting a plastic bottle just to have something cold to drink.) There's also a separate back door for guests. Breakfast has been excellent: fruit salad to start, juice, a beautiful omelette the first time I stayed and a Belgian waffle this morning. The owners have a beautiful Golden Retriever, but he is not allowed in the B&B portion of the house. Catherine is lovely to talk to, knowledgeable about the area, and responsive to the needs and preferences of her guests. If business brings me back to the area, I will *definitely* put this place at the top of my list.

While it carries the Ritz-Carlton name, the overall experience does not consistently meet that standard. During my most recent stay, I again attempted to use mobile check-in. As with prior visits, it did not work, and I ultimately had to check in at the front desk. Staff attributed this to an "app glitch," which is the same explanation I have received multiple times. At this point, it appears to be a recurring issue rather than an isolated one. Check-in itself was slow, with multiple guests waiting, and the staff was not particularly welcoming or attentive. The layout does not help the situation. The fireplace is positioned near the check-in line, which may have been intended to enhance the atmosphere, but in practice it makes an already crowded and uncomfortable waiting area worse. After checking in, I asked for contact information for the front desk manager. No business cards were available, and staff could not provide direct contact details. One employee later identified themselves as a front desk manager and offered assistance, but given the experience up to that point, it did little to instill confidence. The room was acceptable but unremarkable. It was slightly better than what you might find at a lower-tier brand like a Fairfield Inn, but it did not reflect a luxury standard. The mattress had a noticeable dip in the middle, suggesting it is due for replacement. There are a couple of positives. The location is excellent, right in the center of downtown Cleveland with direct access to the Terminal Tower complex. In addition, the fitness center is genuinely top-notch and one of the stronger features of the property. That said, I have stayed at other Ritz-Carlton properties, and this one does not compare favorably. The pricing and brand set a high expectation, and this property does not consistently deliver an experience that justifies either.

My first visit was during Wednesday DJ series. My second visit was for an event featuring Ritz's high tea. My review includes collective reflections. AMBIANCE: Historic charm in the heart of the city. The hotel is the part of the legendary Tower City Center (with entry from the center or main separate entrance). While I'm unfamiliar with the hotel experience, I can speak to the hospitality portion. The hotel features the main restaurant Turn Bar and Kitchen, and lounge-like private space Highball, both located on the 6th floor. The same floor also has Radiance event room (on the smaller side) with picturesque views of the city reservable for events. The ambiance is certainly upscale. FOOD/DRINKS: I had several dining experiences at the Ritz (high tea and restaurant experience). I regret to share that I found none of them impressive or the best in the city. The food and drinks were very subpar, and not memorable. I tried Berry zero proof mocktail ($15) and wild mushroom flatbread ($18). Mocktail was okay, nothing distinct. Flatbread was small and lacking flavor. The most annoying part of the dining experience is that I had to order mocktail from Turn Kitchen and food from Highball. Highball menu doesn't include spirit free choices which is a clear miss given the current trends. It was inconvenient to travel back and forth. HIGH TEA: I attended an event that featured an element of Ritz's high tea. The regular reservation is available through Eventbrite and is priced at $65. The decor, level of detail, and service were excellent. The tea experience was pretty average. Tea at the tables was served lukewarm and pretty diluted. Sandwiches and desserts were most likely prepared well in advance, didn't taste the freshest. I most liked crème for biscuits and cucumber sandwiches. The Ritz team presented tea to our tables which was a nice personal touch. If one wanted hot tea, there was a separate station with tea bags which was my go to. I had plenty of experiences at tea houses and tea events that far surpassed this one. This actually surprised me. SERVICE: The service at this Ritz is a mixed bag. Some personnel definitely lives up to Ritz service gold standard, other service is very average. I had wonderful experience with a waiter at Highball (5 star service and superior attention to my needs). Staff at high tea worked cohesively and was pretty nice. I didn't at all enjoy my interactions at the Turn Kitchen, it was very uppity and slow service. I wasn't at all impressed with Turn. The service felt so different across all these "restaurants" that it felt like I visited various businesses and not just one. I would recommend experiencing Ritz at least once for the views and luxe vibes. Personally, I can't find a good reason to return unless there is some grand event at the hotel. Or perhaps if the tea serves up bolder tea flavors and fresher food. I was honestly underwhelmed considering the brand reputation. I wish that our Ritz would be as amazing as the others around the world.

Vicki and her staff are so friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We had a delicious breakfast each morning with coffee and wonderful conversation with other guests. The library was so interesting with the painted shades, historical information, photos and books. We stayed in the Adeline Room which is upstairs. Bed was comfy and a clawfoot tub in the bathroom. Close to everything we wanted to see on the National Park adventure. Quick walk to the Brandywine Falls as well. Great time, loved staying here and definitely would be back!

After contacting the host, we were given the same instructions again, and it took approximately 20 minutes before the fireplace finally turned on. Shortly after, the refrigerator began making a loud, repetitive knocking noise. We contacted the host again to report this issue and asked that it be addressed when checking on the fireplace. The unit above us was occupied, and we experienced excessive noise throughout the night, including loud stomping that made it difficult to sleep. When we contacted the host the following morning to ask whether the upstairs unit would also be occupied for our second night, her immediate response was that we could "just check out." This was not a reasonable or helpful solution, especially considering we had paid for a two-night stay. We expected the host to communicate with the upstairs guests and ask them to be mindful of the guests below. Additional concerns included water pressure issues. While the bathtub is visually appealing, after running the water for approximately 20 minutes, it barely filled, making it unusable. Flooring throughout the unit is uneven, with large gaps between planks partially covered by rugs, creating both comfort and safety concerns. While snacks and drinks were provided, one of the items. a mini loaf had visible mold and was not safe for consumption. Due to the combination of unresolved maintenance issues, excessive noise, and poor communication from the host, our stay did not meet reasonable expectations for the price paid.

The first floor is a common area to enjoy. The decor is clean, classic, and suitable for the home. The home smelled fresh, the areas were wiped down and organized. We even had breakfast waiting for us in the fridge and home made cookies on the counter. Up to the second floor and into our room to the left we were greeted with a spacious king bed with a working fire, seating area, and best of all, jacuzzi tub. Stand up shower but the tub is where it's at. Doug walked us through all the features of the TV, remote controls, jacuzzi buttons, and history of how this once barn became a home. By the time he left we felt like family. Wish we found this earlier so we could have stayed longer. Before he gave us the keys and retired for the evening we were given restaurant suggestions in walking distance along with a coupon good to use at a few of them if interested. The home is retro, and given its age, appointed well enough. Actually, we were quite surprised by how comfy the beds were, as well as the nicely designed main bathroom. We've stayed in older F.L.W. designed homes, and have felt much less comfortable! Self-catering is possible, there are electric stove tops, but, there is no oven for baking or roasting. The home is stocked with everything you need to put together simple meals in style and enjoy the architecture and nature the property affords. There is a lovely deck, but, we couldn't utilize it because it was a bit too cold and wet when we visited; this would be great to dine and lounge on during summer months! What we liked most about the experience, besides checking out F.L.W.'s architecture, were the sweeping views from the large high-ceilinged living and dining room area. Inside, it felt like we were actually sitting in a forest! From the living room, from sunrise thru sunset, we could easily see deer grazing about slowly yet cautiously, beautifully and gracefully for our eyes. We viewed countless cardinals, blue jays, hawks and many other bird species, enriching the experience. There are many hiking trails on the property, and just up the road at Gully Brook Park, where we encountered more deer on our peaceful walks through the valley. Lastly, the town of Willoughby Hills itself has a decent coffee shop, numerous restaurants and bars, as well as grocery stores and wine shops, to make a stay at Penfield House most enjoyable.

Beautifully maintained, comfy and historic. We arrived and spent our first night by the fire playing games and snacking on charcuterie. An easy deal since the house is fully furnished and usable, including the firewood. Loved the ambiance and the warm vibe. You can tell it was a happy home filled with great memories. Browsing through the guest book there are many returnees each year. Sarah, the current owner, was awesome. When the power went out the first morning she and her family kept checkin up on us. We were great though, even without electricity! We built and kept the fore going, made French Press coffee and cooked on the gas stove lighting it with a lighter. There was hot water from the gas water heater so showers were had and everyone was happy. We spent the second night much like the first, games, good food (braised slow cooked short ribs over mashers and garlicky spinach) and lots of great wine, all by candle light and the warmth of the fire. It was "glamping" at its finest! Sadly, the power was not restored until after we left, but we still had a terrific time and plan on returning to enjoy the home, the hiking on the property and the Chagrin River. Highly recommend this great historic rental!
