Very healthy but not cheap - $16 for a veggie entree with a side of salad. Service is fast though but probably wouldn't come back often. Quality of food is good and veggies are cooked right. Falafels were sizable as well and full of herbs. Would recommend if you're looking for healthy eating and not worried about over spending on lunch. read more

2 Oct 2025 2:30 ish PM 3.1 stars. Been wanting a Cobb salad. I love those things. Wife and I decided to take a 21 mile drive to a spot we think specializes in salads. Tender Greens. As expected, finding parking is a beotch in Berkeley. Metered parking a block and a half away was found. A dollar for each 16 minutes if I remember correctly. I'm a boomer that doesn't like restaurants that have loud noise, disorganization, unruly todlers or uncleanliness. I expect to be treated as if I was invited over to have lunch with a mature friend. The cashier where you order and pay at the same time is counterintuitively at the back of the place. Customers walk in the front door and need to ask a cook at the front who tells you to head down towards the back door to place an order. Management: An "ORDER" sign with an arrow easily visible at entrance pointing to the cashier might fix this. That sign you currently have 11' high towards the back is easily missed. The staff at Tender Greens seemed professional. Maybe aside for the employees that wear their uniform hats backwards. The restaurant was kept clean and the tables bussed. Pleasant tunes like from The Foo Fighters and Hall and Oats had me bopping my head. If this was a tap room I could have spent hours here. I got my Cobb (and took my Yelp pictures) and my wife had a grilled salmon plate. I'll focus on the Cobb salad. I've been enjoying these salads for years. They come with a portion of blue cheese, a portion of dressing, a portion of chicken yada yada all arranged next to but not in each other. You get the salad plate and enjoy the look of the individual items, and then you mix or not at will. It's fun. Want to skip the avocado? Do it. Share a clean tomato? Share away. Skimp on the dressing or don't use it at all? You're in charge. Go for it! At Tender Greens, their salad comes tossed for you without your asking.. Sauce is on everything. If you are hoping to eat a bit of blue cheese or anything by itself, that is not happening. Most salad items are disguised in sauce\dressing to the point that you have to put food bits in your mouth and suck off the dressing before you chew to figure out what you have. Also you have no idea with this tossing how much of each salad componate you paid for. I haven't seen a tossing on a Cobb like this (until today) for fifty years and I hope never to see it for fifty more. Side note on this salad. Those bacon bites ( too large to call bits) are delicious. Just like my Father's home made bacon, though you could chip a tooth on these.. So the $16.95 salad tasts fine and I'm 3\4 through and getting full and Damned if i don't find a four inch brown hair on my plate. I'm bald and my wife's hair is overly highlighted blond so its not ours. This has never happened to me before to my knowledge. Unless I've unwittingly eaten someone else's hair. The filthy thing must have been hidden under the salad as it didn't show in the pics taken upon salad arrival. I was so disappointed and sick down in the pit of my stomach that I didn't have the presence of mind to take a picture. You know or can imagine the feeling of filth touching your food right? Management. This food debacle can be easily fixed. Most of your male employees have facial hair and nobody wears hair nets. 1) Hair nets for all. 2) Facial masks for whiskers. Use it (mask) or lose it (shave). I received a second salad with an apology for the first. The second salad had visibly more blue cheese and avocado. That was nice. Management. Portion control? I might come back for the second salad but not the first. So it's unlikely we will be back. read more

I've been here a few times and have always enjoyed it. I typically get a Grilled Steak plate, which comes with two choices of sides and a garlic bread. It's always good, nothing special and you could probably make it at home but it's a solid meal. It's definitely quite expensive for the amount of food you get. There's lots of seating inside and they have an outdoor area as well. You order at a counter and they'll bring you your food. Typically service is fast and employees have always been kind and approachable. You have to find street parking somewhere which can be difficult, as expected. Would come again for a quick and convenient meal. read more

The first time, I also asked about a limited edition deal for a free housemade drink, so I was able to try the Greens as part of that. Happier Vegan bowl: 3/5 The red sauce was spicy, and the falafel patties are plain on their own and could've used some seasoning. I wish they put more falafel but I liked the farro and hummus I thought it was just okay overall, it didn't feel like to me like I got a lot for the price. It's listed as containing baked falafel, farro salad, hummus, pasta pearls, heirloom cherry tomatoes, baby lettuces, harissa sauce, sherry vinaigrette. The Greens: 3/5 It definitely tasted like health food, i.e. leafy green vegetables. Would have been nice if they could have tweaked it in some way to make it tastier while still being nutritious. Longevity bowl with maitake mushroom: 5/5 I'm not a fan of arugula, but I was pleasantly surprised that while there was indeed a decent amount of arugula, it didn't taste bad, and although I was skeptical when first seeing the cauliflower because it was charred black on one side and mostly still green on the other, it actually tasted yummy and crunchy without being unpleasantly bitter. I also really like the lentils, and I particularly loved the mushrooms which are firm, juicy and savory. The dressing paired well with it too. Olive oil cake: 3/5 It was alright, sweeter than I expected. Kind of reminds me of a donut. I was really hoping it would be more savory and heavy on the olive flavor. read more

Tender Greens in Berkeley serves tasty food and has friendly staff. I don't love the part of town it's in, but they have a nice space. What I don't like about Tender Green is their less than honest/accurate advertising. I recently bought a six-pack of cookies - under "family meals" on the menu. I ordered through the app and was expecting two cookie varieties: the chocolate chunk and salted caramel cookies that can also be purchased individually. I would have been pleasantly surprised if there had been a third flavor during the holiday season. Instead, all six cookies were chocolate chunk. Even stranger was that the cookie sizes were completely inconsistent. I took photos to highlight the distinction. During a visit earlier in the year, I ordered a special seasonal dish: the Japanese Chicken Curry. While it was certainly tasty, I was disappointed that the advertised photos featured a healthy amount of chicken -- large chunks throughout -- while the actual dish contained very little chicken -- just a few small bites. I was expecting a hearty dish with plenty of protein, but that was not what was served. Between the chicken and the cookies, I have felt misled and no longer trust Tender Greens. I'm very disappointed in the service I've received via mobile app. I've tried to call several times to speak with someone and I've been connected to Shelter plus care... I've been transferred to a dead end no voicemail line... never anyone at the store. My order was left outside in the rain and by the time I was able to find it (security picked it up) ... it was cold... my steak was well done and I asked for medium and extremely salty. Everything tasted super fresh and delicious! I got the Happier Vegan bowl. My only thing is I wish there was more falafel or something to dip into the hummus or sauces as i had a lot of hummus and sauce leftover after eating the bowl. I ended up dipping some pretzels I had into the hummus to finish it. If anything it felt like a light lunch to me as I was still hungry after, idk how the non-vegan bowls are but the flavors are on point, customer service was friendly and the entire place was very clean and modern looking. Something is definitely rotten in Denmark, because I'm 97.78 percent sure I reviewed the Berkeley Tender Greens location like four years ago. Oh well. Yikes. You know how gentrification normally sneaks up on a given neighborhood, but when you look back on it, you realize there were some tiny but telltale signs that you just happened to miss? In San Francisco, if a Souvla opens, then the neighborhood is going to gentrify. In Downtown Berkeley, the pathetic reclaimed-wood tricking out of the McDonald's at the corner of Shattuck and University should have tipped me off, but what I most remember about the vague time period sometime between 2014 and 2017 is that the first time I tried Tender Greens, I absolutely could not believe how expensive the salad was. I don't mean that I noticed and grumbled about the price of the salad; I mean that I knew the price of the salad and simply could not imagine that the worker would knowingly and intentionally give me exactly one-quarter of the amount of salad I had paid for. You may ask which worker, and I might not remember, because when this place opened, it had at least twenty visible employees all working at the same time. I'm not exaggerating, and it may have been up to thirty. But whereas Mezzo's multiple workers are deftly efficient in constructing their expensive but high-value sandwiches and salads, Tender Greens's workers didn't seem to know what they were doing. I returned a couple of times, including once the following week, and while the entire ordering process became smoother and the number of employees shrank, the value didn't get any better, and the post-ordering service got really bad. There were messy tables during and after the lunch rush, even though there were plenty of workers whose sole job it was to bus tables and tidy up all the stations. Some of the workers do, indeed, work very hard. And then others kind of stand around but don't really pretend to look busy. It's a nice interior space, which is why I'm giving it two stars. The prices don't seem as ridiculous as they once did, but I refuse to be fooled more than three times. Tender Greens is a ripoff. There's just no way these ingredients can cost anywhere near this much, and the service should be much better for what you're paying. read more

They recently closed down the Tender Greens near my city, so I was happy to have lunch at this location in Berkeley while visiting family in the area. Metered street parking is limited, but the restaurant is large and spacious both inside and in their outdoor patio out back. Service was sufficient, with more workers than guests at the restaurant around noon time on a Tuesday, so hardly a wait for anything. The grilled salmon plate with romaine hearts and roasted potatoes lived up to the standards of other locations I've been to... tasty quality ingredients to fill my hunger. Everything was satisfying in both of our dishes, and the hibiscus tea was just right, fruity but not too sweet. read more

Wow! My husband and I ate here for dinner tonight and man, we found a new place to eat. We ate here a long time ago and loved it but eating here again after so long reminded us of how amazing it truly is. My husband ordered steak tri tip plate plate with potatoes, salad and another side of veggies. I ordered the salmon plate with veggies and a salad. It was *chefs kiss* amazing! Every bite was as good as the last one and packed with so much flavor. For dessert, we had a chocolate chip cookie. We are happy campers. We feel full but not uncomfortable full like usual. I took off a star because it was ridiculously expensive for just the two of us. We will definitely be back. Maybe not every week but once a month to treat ourselves =) read more

Didn't realize they have a dime-in option as I've only ever had Tender Greens via delivery or catered lunch at work. Yelp pictures revealed that they indeed have quite a lot of room for seating. My in-person experience did not disappoint. In fact, I was quite surprised that they have an outside courtyard which is completely unbeknownst to folks from the outside looking in. Parking, however, is a different story. You may need to drive around the block once or twice, unless your local and within walking distance. Some operational feedback that impacted my experience is as follows. One, upon entering the natural opening to the line, looks like an entrance, but it's actually the exit. I didn't realize that until I was too late and already halfway down the walk of shame, and had to scoot by people already in line . Two, in case you were looking for somewhere on the menu in big bold letters to let you know that you can get sandwich and a soup, don't be like me and miss the fine print. That option does exist, but it's kind of printed in a smaller print than I would have appreciated before I made my order. I came on a cold day so a sandwich and soup would've been just perfect. Also, the key on the menu indicated that red dots meant raw and that left me a little confused because the red dot appeared next to items that clearly we're not served raw such as fried chicken or grilled salmon. Anyway, the food itself is decent. The bread and delightful! My partner's go to is the Chinese chicken salad, which never disappoints. I opted to try a bowl, specifically the Pacific bowl with grilled salmon. It was a nice alternative but friendly reminder to a poke bowl for the colder season. I decided to treat myself with a cookie for dessert. I don't think that I've ever seen such big chips on a chocolate chip cookie! Overall a great place for lunch, if in the area, or for delivery. Wow this seared tuna nicoise salad is just super delicious! Fair and well prepared tuna. Lovely roasted potatoes. Generous amounts of capers, a perfectly hard boiled egg half, and the right mix of salt and acid in the dressing. Salads never taste that good when I try to prepare my own! I was not a salad person before I found out about Tender Greens. I discovered this place during the early pandemic era, and I was a bit skeptical, but my roommate really wanted to try it. Now, I even find myself craving it! I ordered the Mediterranean Steak Salad and was IMPRESSED. The steak was medium rare and was just so juicy and flavorful! I loved the dressing as well, really tied everything together. The serving size was also enough to fill me up, which most salads from other places don't do for me, which is probably why I'm so impressed with this place! Even their non-salad dishes are delicious! If you're not looking for a salad, I recommend the Buttermilk Fried Chicken plate. The restaurant itself has plenty of seating, not many people dine in to eat, so you're bound to find someplace to sit! This place has become my go-to salad spot. I came to Tender Greens last night with two other couples. We arrived at 6:00 and ordered soon after. Each couple put their order in. My husband ordered a burger and I ordered the pesto pasta. Well, the two other couples got their food in a timely manner. However, the order for my husband and I was nowhere to be found. I watched four other people in my group eat and finish their dinner while husb and I waited and waited and waited. We all had tickets to Freight & Salvage for a 7:30 show. We repeatedly let your staff know we had been waiting a long damn time. Ten minutes before the show, our food arrived and we had to ask for to-go containers. Having been to a couple different tender greens locations now, this one is pretty similar to the others. I ordered delivery so this review will be just on the taste of the food. Everything tasted great! I got a steak plate - the steak was tender not chewy, the salad was great and the mashed potatoes is buttery goodness per usual. My boyfriend had the California steak bowl and he enjoyed it as well! For the price, it's not a whole lot of food, so we were content after but could use a dessert. I didn't dock a star for value though because Tender Greens has always been a little pricey at about $15 for a plate - so I'm surprised and happy that the price hasn't gone up given the pandemic. If you decide to give Tender Greens a try, I highly recommend the steak or the tuna - both are delicious. For your sides, you MUST get the mashed potatoes - their mashed potatoes are still hands down my favorite mashed potatoes ever. And all their salads are delicious - can't go wrong! read more

Was expecting more for the price. This place is "good," but for the price I was definitely underwhelmed. Ordered the nicoise salad with lemonade. The lemonade was tart and refreshing, which I prefer to overly sweetened lemonade. The salad lacked flavor and was pretty boring. Plus, the tuna was chewy and I ended up leaving half of it on the plate. Would recommend sweet greens (just around the corner on Shattuck) over tender greens. read more

Delicious and flavorful American food at a decent price! I built my plate starting with with buttermilk fried chicken. It was fried perfectly; crispy and crunchy on the outside, steaming hot and softly tender and easy to pull apart on the inside. I was very impressed for a chain restaurant. The seasonal veggies were roasted to be an unctuous bite. I particularly enjoyed the roasted sweet potato and the crunch of the other vegetables; it was a great textural contrast to the chicken. The roasted tomato soup is so flavorful and layered, without being greasy or heavy! The acidity really complemented the chicken and veggies. The buttered and toasted bread was soft and toasted well, and perfect for dipping into the soup. Overall, I had a great experience dining here. I would definitely come back. read more

I got a salad delivered from DoorDash here yesterday and it was so good, I was a little shocked. The salmon was juicy and the skin was crispy even, which I never expect since it takes a while to get delivered. After I wouldn't shut up about it to my husband, we decided to try it in the restaurant today and now we're both scratching our head at how the reviews are so low on Yelp. He had the steak and I had the salmon again and both were DELICIOUS. The quality of both dishes were something we would've paid $30-40 in a nice Napa restaurant. We will definitely add Tender Greens to our restaurant rotation and I'm so glad it's so near us. We hope this Berkeley location thrives and stays open for a long time. read more

Great spot for casual, fresh food. We appreciate the gluten free options - both my kiddos have celiac. They ordered a salad and plate that were gf, but they don't tell you that they serve the meal with bread on top. Once we explained the allergy they quickly made them new meals. I definitely think it's more 3.5 stars than 3 but that's not an option unfortunately. I work in downtown Berkeley and want to try all of the great food we have in the area. My coworker and I always get to go out and have a sit down lunch every once in awhile. I ordered the salt & pepper chicken, Parmesan kale, and fingerling potatoes. My coworker got the Cobb salad. My chicken was pretty good, fairly seasoned but a tad on the dry side. The Parmesan kale was probably my favorite part of the meal. It was delicious! I also got the pomegranate ginger lemonade which was such a palate cleanser and very enjoyable. I'd like to come back and give it another try and maybe try a few other things. read more
